The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

The Critics Choice Award for chutzpah goes to … the lady swathed in gold lamé, sporting a Mohawk fade hairstyle who, without so much as a by-your-leave, crashed past me and scooped up a bottle of Milagro Silver tequila that was part of the centerpiece on tables at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
“Can I,” she asks, grabbing the booze.
Wasn’t my liquor.
The thing that made me jump up in my seat was that Mohawk Lady already had bottles under her arm.
Quick as a flash, she repeated the same move at neighboring tables.
By now she had a haul of five or six bottles. Crash! One of them fell to the ground, so she swiped a replacement.
Stirred the former crime reporter in me. Who was Mohawk Lady?
She’s an online critic, someone at another table tells me.
Later on I ask her directly but she mumbles,...

Loretta Devine will step in for her old Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Holliday in the upcoming New York City Center gala presentation of Pal Joey starring Ephraim Sykes.
Holliday had been previously announced for the role of nightclub owner Lucille Wallace but bowed out due to scheduling conflicts. The production runs Nov. 1-5 at City Center, starting with a benefit performance to be followed by a gala dinner at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
Both Devine and Holliday became Broadway stars for their performances in the original production of Dreamgirls in 1981, with Devine playing Lorrell Robinson and Holliday playing Effie Melody White.
The starry gala presentation of Pal Joey will be co-directed by Savion Glover and Tony Goldwyn, with Glover choreographing. The musical is being reconceived, with the character of Joey Evans portraying the character as a Black jazz singer who refuses to compromise on his craft...

Brace yourself for a broken record.
How can this show keep getting better and better when it's so good already? On Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 5, the hits start right off the bat, and they just keep coming.
Everyone on screen and behind the scenes is a master of their craft. It's that simple, folks!
Tituss Burgess gives us a sinister Sweeney-esque recap of where we're at with our various plotlines, and even though he's fantastic here, it can't compare to his big number that comes a little later in the episode.
Melissa has truly come into her own, and Cecily Strong is there right along with her.
Dropping the Funny Girl costume (and schtick), Strong goes full-on torch singer with "My Turn Now," an homage to the magnificent "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret.
Vocally, she's never sounded better, which a strong belt and confident mixed voice that soars. No wonder the audience loves her!

Exclusive: A ban on drag performances in public places has been enacted in Tennessee, and more than a dozen other states may follow suit, a movement predicated on the fear that children who might glimpse such a show would be scarred by it. But an upcoming documentary defies that demonization by portraying drag performers as a force for good in their community.
Emmy-winning media company World of Wonder and Gatekeeper Productions today announced they have wrapped production on The Little Pageant That Could, a feature documentary that chronicles the journey of L.A.’s Best in Drag Show to support the Alliance for Housing and Healing.
“The event, which started as a spur-of-the-moment spoof of Miss America thrown by a few twenty-something friends in a tiny West Hollywood apartment in 1990, grew to become L.A.’s longest-running drag benefit including appearances by A-list actors,...

Sheryl Lee Ralph Sang the Black National Anthem, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’ at the 2023 Super Bowl
Emmy Award winner Sheryl Lee Ralph took to the field at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before kickoff at Super Bowl Lvii. The Black national anthem is a recent addition to pre-game ceremonies at NFL games, and the original Dreamgirls star did the song justice with her soaring vocals.

Much like “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was a poem that was later set to music. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written in 1900 by civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson; his brother composed music to accompany his words. Johnson’s song was written when someone in his local community wanted to put together a celebration to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. The song began as a celebration of Lincoln and...

When Jennifer Hudson was just 14 weeks old, the musical Dreamgirls debuted on the Broadway stage, where it won six Tony Awards, including a Best Actress trophy for the show’s breakout star, Jennifer Holliday. Holliday also earned a Grammy Award and a No. 1 R&b hit with the musical’s show-stopping number, And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going. That was a song young Jennifer Hudson grew up listening to and loving, though she never realized it came from Dreamgirls. So, when she auditioned for the Dreamgirls movie, Hudson told us she was surprised to find she’d be singing Holliday’s songs. Billy Porter Broke Barriers on Stage and on TV. Now, He’s Shifting His Focus to His ‘Original Dream’
Billy Porter is three decades into a career he was repeatedly told would never happen.
A Black, queer artist with a booming voice and indelible screen and stage presence, Porter has ascended to extraordinary heights by defying those expectations.
“It’s been a wild, unexpected, glorious ride to get to this place of knowing and living what was possible then to what is possible now,” he tells Variety. “Who I am now was an impossibility then.”
Now a Grammy, Tony and Emmy-winning legend, the 53- year-old will be honored on Dec. 1 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The “Kinky Boots” and “Pose” star was surprised by news of the honor, even if his collaborators aren’t.
“It’s only right for his name to be etched in history for people to stop, stare and remember how much weight he has and how lasting his impact is,” says Michaela Jaé Rodriguez,...

Jennifer Hudson Recounts "Fanning Out" Over Duet With Sheryl Lee Ralph: "I Wanted to Make Her Proud"

Jennifer Hudson has been blessed with some extraordinary mentors in life. Like many of us, the first was her mom, who always told her: "Jennifer, all you can do is the best you can do." That guidance served Hudson well through the years, especially when she landed her Oscar-winning role of Effie in 2006's "Dreamgirls." "I remember when I was getting ready to shoot 'Dreamgirls' and record the 'And I Am Telling You' song, and I'm like, 'What is left for me to do to this song?'" Hudson tells Popsugar. "My mom said, 'All you can do is the best you can do.' And something as simple as that. It's been something to carry me throughout my life when I get in tough situations and can't figure out things."

After last season’s controversial decision to include a disgraced politician who is the target of a criminal investigation involving the attempts in 2020 to overthrow the democratically-elected President of the United States, “The Masked Singer” returns next month with a new crop of contestants — and Variety has a first look at one of the costumes.
“Bride,” the dragon-esque character as seen above, reps the first character to be introduced so far for the Season 8 of “Masked Singer.” Bride was created by costume designer Tim Chappel, who has also designed creations for the Australian version of the series.
Fox has so far not revealed any other characters. But the show is having some fun with speculation on social media (and on the Fox-owned TMZ website) that NFL superstar Tom Brady may appear on the new season, since he’s been missing from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp.

Anyone who has ever seen “The Music Man” knows act 1 ends with the citizens of River City, Iowa anticipating and then celebrating in song the arrival of the Wells Fargo wagon, which is bringing to town musical instruments for the kids that Professor Harold Hill has conned their parents into buying. After the townspeople have sung two verses expressing their excitement, Winthrop Paroo, the younger brother of the show’s heroine, Marian Paroo, steps forward and sings a third verse of the song. The audience knows that Winthrop has a lisp which has made him hesitant to talk, but here he is so joyful, that he is sufficiently unselfconscious to express himself in song. As...

"Time passes and suddenly you realize, 'this is it.'" Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled The Road to Galena, which will be out to watch starting this July. The film is another of these "what if you had everything, but you still felt something was missing?" kind of existential dramas. Power lawyer Cole Baird has all the trappings of success, but behind the façade, he’s crippled by a career he never wanted and a dream left behind. He now has a choice to make: continue a life of emptiness or follow the path to happiness back to his small, rural hometown. "A touching story of one man's quiet desperation giving way to fulfillment; a story that motivates us to travel our own roads toward a more meaningful life." The film stars Ben Winchell as Cole, Will Brittain, Jay O. Sanders, Jill Hennessy,...

Earlier this season on “The Masked Singer,” Jenny McCarthy was so wowed by one of Ringmaster’s performances that she told the circus kitty, “If you don’t win, I’m coming back with a shaved head next season.” Surely she was joking, right? The celebrity panelist isn’t really thinking about getting rid of her trademark blonde locks? Well, during the May 11 “Road to the Finals” episode of “Tms,” Jenny revealed she wasn’t exaggerating. “I was dead serious when I said I would shave my head because her level of talent is absolutely insane,” she reiterated. “It’s like one of the greatest voices I’ve ever heard, let alone on ‘Masked Singer.'”

Rudy who?
The “Road to the Finals” episode of “The Masked Singer,” which aired May 11 on Fox, showed clips, interviews and behind-the-scenes moments from Season 7, but one celebrity was noticeably missing: Rudy Giuliani. To be clear, every other unmasked contestant from this “Good, Bad and Ugly” cycle was prominently featured in the recap episode (see the list below). Obviously, the former New York City Mayor and personal attorney to Donald Trump was the most controversial figure to ever appear on the reality TV singing show. But after going through all the trouble of casting him and letting him perform on the big stage, we’re admittedly surprised to now see “The Masked Singer” cancel Rudy Giuliani.

Team Cuddly’s Space Bunny finished in third place and was revealed to be Grammy-winning entertainer Shaggy. Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 7, Episode 9, of “The Masked Singer,” “One Mask Hurrah – Round 3 Finals,” which aired May 4 on Fox.
Alas, En Vogue couldn’t hold on, and this time, it was Shaggy. Both 1990s artists were eliminated on Wednesday night during the Round 3 finales of this season’s “The Masked Singer.”
The En Vogue trio of Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Rhona Bennett were unmasked as the Queen Cobra, while Shaggy was revealed to be the Space Bunny.
For Queen Cobra, Nicole Scherzinger figured out it was En Vogue, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg agreed. Robin Thicke thought it was another 90s R&b group, Swv; and Ken Jeong went big with the more contemporary combo of Ariana Grande/Jessie J/Nicki Minaj.
As for Space Bunny, Thicke was correct with Shaggy, and Scherzinger agreed. McCarthy Wahlberg thought it was Sean Kingston and Ken Jeong guessed Owen Wilson.

Well, that happened. In what was largely an anticlimactic end to what we were all bracing for this season on Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” disgraced former attorney Rudolph Giuliani showed up, sang an off-key and off-putting version of “Bad to the Bone” by George Thorogood and the Destroyers and then was unmasked as the Jack in the Box.
The show’s Wednesday episode teased the Giuliani reveal as “the biggest event in ‘Masked Singer’ history” — which was perhaps true, at least until the show casts O.J. Simpson next season.
Panelist Ken Jeong was not pleased as reported: “No, that’s not Robert Duvall” (one of the top guesses), he said, arms folded and clearly appalled at the casting.

After seven seasons on the air, “The Masked Singer” is still making history. First a contestant choked on stage, then she stormed off in a diva fit. Now, a costume had to be warned by production not to defecate on camera. Yep, you read that right. “They told me that I could do anything I wanted out here except poop on the stage,” revealed Baby Mammoth during the April 20 episode. “And so I’m gonna take a very big win. Because although you can poop in the circus, you are not allowed on this show.”

Armadillo aka Chapman was voted out after singing the traditional hymn “Amazing Grace.” Previous songs he performed included “Secret Agent Man,” by Johnny Rivers and “I Fought the Law,” by the Bobby Fuller Four.
As for Holliday, as Miss Teddy, she sang “Mercy,” by Duffy. Before that, she performed “Tell It to My Heart,” by Taylor Dayne, and “Tell Me You Love Me,...

Team Good and Team Cuddly both took hits during Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer” as the contestants faced another double elimination to see who would be joining Firefly in the finals.
Ringmaster came out on top, meaning that Armadillo and Miss Teddy were sent home. Although they were ultimately cut, both impressed the judges with their performances — especially Miss Teddy who sang her heart out to “Mercy” by Duffy.
It’s no surprise that the judges were blown away by her powerful voice, considering that Miss Teddy was none other than original Dream Girl Jennifer Holliday. Before her official unveiling, judge Nicole Scherzinger was able to correctly identify the iconic singer.
Scherzinger was on a roll during the Round 2 finals, also managing to guess the identity of Armadillo. She quickly realized that all the clues pointed to Dog the Bounty Hunter, and she was right. And in the 11th hour,...

As much fun as it is to watch the celebrities perform on “The Masked Singer,” we get even more enjoyment from figuring out who they are. That is especially true if we can crack the mystery of who is hiding inside a costume before the four judges.
Season 7 of “The Masked Singer” promises to be the most competitive yet. The producers have packed the line-up with 16 stars performing inside 15 costumes (a pair were paired up as Hydra). They are divided into three types, the Good, the Bad and the Cuddly, and performed in groups of five. Group A is down to just one star still standing, the Firefly. Group B sang for the first time on March 30, with Lemur unmasked as supermodel Christie Brinkley. On April 6, we saw the exit of Hydra, who turned out to be magicians Penn & Teller.

This year’s Oscars telecast incorporated reunions of cast members from classic movies such as “The Godfather,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Juno.” Last year’s Tony Awards actually did something similar, bringing together cast members from different Broadway classics such as “Hairspray,” “Ragtime,” “Rent,” and “Wicked” for performances as the industry was fighting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the Tonys will be presenting their landmark 75th annual ceremony this year, I think it would be even more fitting if they reunite more co-stars from Broadway classics of yesteryear to perform or even present awards. Here are some suggestions. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see.
