Man's Castle.“When you’re dead, you get a hunk of earth. When you’re alive, all you’ve got is that hunk of blue.” This is how Bill (Spencer Tracy), the restless hero of Frank Borzage’s Man’s Castle (1933), explains his insistence on sleeping under the open sky. Borzage’s films always cast their eyes heavenward with exalted sincerity; they offer no sop to modern irony or cynicism. No one should watch them who is not prepared to be enraptured. The essence of Borzage’s romanticism resides in the enchanted spaces his lovers create together: sometimes a semi-permanent home, like the Parisian garret in 7th Heaven (1927), at other times a fleeting idyll of shared fantasy, like the abandoned plantation mansion where the outcast couple in Moonrise (1948) waltz amid the shadows and cobwebs. These magical playhouses are spaces of care and refuge as much as dreamy eroticism; in Man’s Castle,...

Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States on a promise to “Make America Great Again.” But a preeminent group of political scientists that Trump would no doubt characterize as “haters and losers” has once again ranked him as the worst commander-in-chief in the nation’s history.
The 2024 Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey was conducted at the end of 2023 among members of the Presidents & Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association — a group that publishes multiple academic journals — and scholars who have lately published peer-reviewed papers related to presidential politics.

Former President Donald Trump said that he hoped a financial crash would occur this year, as he believed it would give him a chance to win a second term as president.
“When there’s a crash, I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president – I just don’t want to be Herbert Hoover,” Trump told conservative commentator Lou Dobbs in an interview on the right-wing platform Lindell TV.
Hoover was president during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the beginning of the Great Depression.
President Joe Biden‘s reelection campaign slammed Trump for harming the middle class for his political benefit.

Donald Trump continues to remind us that he only cares about Trump. In an interview aired Monday, the former president expressed his hope that the economy crashes in the next year so he wouldn’t have to be “Herbert Hoover.”

During his third trip to Iowa this month, Donald Trump warned that if he was not elected president in 2024, the U.S. would see its economy plunge into a “1929”-era depression. His words arrived as the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a record high Wednesday.
Trump, who accomplished the feat of becoming the first president since Herbert Hoover during the Great Depression to leave the country with fewer jobs by the end of his one-term presidency, claimed that the “Biden administration is running on the fumes of the great success of the Trump Administration.

In an unprecedented move, the libraries and foundations of 13 former U.S. Presidents have banded together to issue what they’re calling “an urgent call to action for all Americans.” The signatories include institutions representing virtually the entire spectrum presidential politics – from Barack Obama to Ronald Reagan, to Bill Clinton to Richard Nixon to John F. Kennedy – stretching back to Herbert Hoover.
Among the issues of concern cited are the rule of law, the protection of individual rights and “the importance of compassion, tolerance, pluralism, and respect for others.”
Citing their own “wide range of views,” the cosigners reaffirm, “Debate and disagreement are central features in a healthy democracy.”
But, in order to safeguard that essential component, :Civility and respect in political discourse, whether in an election year or otherwise, are essential.”
It ends by enjoining the following:
“Each of us has a role to play and responsibilities to uphold.

This article contains spoilers for "Oppenheimer."
Part of what makes "Oppenheimer" such a rewarding experience is the chance to see Robert Downey Jr. act again. His 13-year run as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ultimately subsumed his career during the 2010s — and his first post-Marvel project was the ill-advised "Dolittle." With this career trajectory, it's easy to forget Downey isn't just a charismatic movie star: he's a really skilled actor, one who hasn't gotten to stretch his muscles in over a decade. "Oppenheimer," his first and hopefully not last movie with Christopher Nolan, finally grants him that opportunity.
Downey plays Lewis Strauss, the man who destroyed Oppenheimer's reputation. From the beginning there's contempt in their relationship; Oppenheimer mispronouncing Strauss' name is the first of indignities that the latter takes too personally. To reflect how their lives intersected, the film employs two framing devices. One, Oppenheimer's security clearance hearing...

On election night and the painful week of counting afterward, a narrative took hold that Joe Biden took 2020 in a squeaker.
But that’s not reality. And as the final votes are being counted, the “red mirage” has vanished to reveal a blue mandate for President-Elect Joe Biden.
Biden has not only won, he’s done so in historic fashion, now reaching a record 80 million votes, with still more to count. That is more than 10 million more votes than the previous popular-vote record-setting winner, Barack Obama, who secured 69 million votes...

Barack Obama on Wednesday made his debut on the campaign trail in support of former Vice President Joe Biden. He had a few words for President Trump.
The former president, who prior to the election season largely refrained from commenting on Trump’s performance, unloaded on him in Philadelphia, and with a gusto we haven’t seen from Obama since … well, probably since he was running for president himself.
Here are some choice quotes from the drive-in campaign stop in front of Citizens Bank Park:

Donald Trump’s astounding incompetence in recent months — worsening the effects of the lethal Covid-19 pandemic, mishandling the ensuing economic disaster, and maliciously inflaming racial tensions — has affirmed that he is without question the worst president in American history. None of the other contenders for the dishonor, including James Buchanan and most recently George W. Bush, can match Trump’s record of bringing on or aggravating three devastating crises at the same time, any one of which might have ruined another president’s reputation. And two incidents amid the turmoil suggest that Trump,...

Charlie Matthau is developing a six-part television series on the 1920 presidential election and hopes to have it air during the home stretch of the 2020 election, Variety has learned exclusively.
“I was struck at how similar the 1920 election was and how it contained so many parallels to the current political environment,” Matthau told Variety.
Matthau, son of the late Walter Matthau, has optioned David Pietrusza’s book “1920: The Year of the Six Presidents” through his Matthau Company. He noted that the series would run concurrently with the 100-year anniversary of the 1920 election.
“1920 is considered the first modern election and one of the most dramatic,” Matthau said. “Six once and future presidents — Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt — jockeyed for the White House. Amazing characters, amazing roles for actors.”

We were deep in conversation with Michael Bay when it hit us: How did our failures bring us here? The film we had written and executive produced had just premiered to a wildly energized opening night audience at SXSW, and Bay was already discussing what we could work on next. It was only yesterday that we were two kids sitting side-by-side in an Iowa multiplex, trying to hide genuine tears of emotion from each other as Bruce Willis sacrificed himself at the climax of “Armageddon.” Now the man behind the Bayhem was standing in front of us as a producer on our film, because three words brought us together: “A Quiet Place.”
The origins of “A Quiet Place” date back to our college years, as we became obsessed with the silent cinema of Charlie Chaplin, F.W. Murnau, Buster Keaton, and Jacques Tati. These filmmakers were masters of visual storytelling, needing...

The unique political fantasy Gabriel Over the White House has become painfully topical lately. This is an update of a 2009 review. To my knowledge nothing has changed with the product — I saw a re-promotion of Twilight Time’s 1984 disc and thought, Gabriel is twice as relevant and at least as scary.
Unstable times in America have produced some pretty strange political-religious message pictures.

This week, we finally get to see the Jay Z/Will Smith–produced reboot of Annie that we did not ask for but will take anyway, because of our plucky, can-do spirit. (The movie went into wide-release the following month.) Was the Billboard Top 40 as bewildering then as it is now? Maaaayyyybeeeee …40. The story of the little red-headed orphan who warms the heart of a billionaire is one of the most famous in all of musical theater history. This is mainly due to the fact it has inspired countless little girls to annoyingly sing. The story has already been given two screen adaptations, one for the big screen in 1982 by John Huston and one for the small screen in 1999 by Rob Marshall. So, instead of Sony trying to adapt a musical that has not made it to the screen yet, they have decided to go to the Annie well once more. But this time the plot, setting, and music have been updated for 2014. The result is one of the most charmless movie musicals I have seen in some time. I knew I was in for trouble when the first scene of the film contains two groan-worthy winks at the audience (something that...

Every version of Annie since the Broadway original has aimed younger and younger. John Huston's 1982 movie cut the child-confounding songs "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover" and "New Deal for Christmas," and added two ditties about Annie's dog. This new flick scraps the 1933 setting altogether and plops Annie into contemporary Harlem, here a sunny bodega playground. Now, in "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile," your clothes aren't "Beau Brummell–y," but "Chanel, Gucci." Producers Jay-z and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith must have beamed when they discovered that rhyme — and, to be fair, their three children are fashion-forward. There's a sense that neither they nor director Will Gluck know what normal kids — the kind they need to buy tickets to ...

Ocsar Wilde championed the notion that life imitates art. He believed the old saying “results not merely from life’s imitative instinct, but from the fact that the self-conscious aim of Life is to find expression, and that Art offers it certain beautiful forms through which it may realize that energy.” Wilde was a miraculous writer and thinker. But sometimes the classic Aristotelian worldview he opined against proves just as accurate. Sometimes art imitates life. To my disgust, such is the case with Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier film and the history of the United States. Kind of.

The book is about how presidents from Herbert Hoover through Barack Obama have worked with — and sometimes against — each other when they were both in and out of power, TheWrap has learned. “Nancy and Michael have masterfully crafted intimate and untold tales of friendship, competition and conspiracy inside the world's most exclusive fraternity,” Jones said. ”My intention is to make a thrill ride of a film. I cannot imagine a more fascinating prism.

Colorado Springs' stately Broadmoor hotel has hosted everyone from Prince Harry to Jay Leno, and just about every president from Herbert Hoover on. But for people who are seeking a more rugged lodging option, there is its just-opened Ranch at Emerald Valley, a cluster of 10 cabins that were built in the early 1900s and have now been restored and majorly fancified. This is the future, according to George Lucas. No, not a zombie apocalypse led by Herbert Hoover and Richard Nixon (though we'd love to see what that'd look like), but a future where going to the movies will be comparable to going to the opera or a Broadway show. It's a dark, dark future where a ticket to the big summer blockbuster could cost you $50, $100, maybe even $150.
Says who? Says George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, that's who. During a panel discussion at USC's School for Cinematic Arts earlier this week, both filmmakers predicted a meltdown in the movie industry...an Implosion even. They say the trend toward big budget flicks like "Iron Man" will eventually squeeze out smaller,...
