NCIS gave fans memorable characters they’ll remember forever — but many of those fan favorites are known for their deaths. The show’s creators recently discussed the characters, actors, and storylines they worked with over the years. And they discussed one “shocking” death that came after the actor complained of long hours on set.
‘NCIS’ creators said actor Sasha Alexander didn’t want to work long, grueling hours
NCIS creators discussed the death of Sasha Alexander’s character, Caitlin Todd. Alexander appeared in the first two seasons of the series, but she was shot in the head in the season 2 finale by Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ archnemesis Ari Haswari.
Peter Golden, the former head of CBS casting, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about Alexander. “We were only able to make a deal with Sasha for two seasons,” he said. “She decided she wanted to move on to other things, and that...

NCIS fans eagerly await updates regarding season 21. While the Writers Guild of America strike paused the new season, writers are back in action to continue the story. However, one executive producer admits that he’s been “threatening to leave” the series for years. Here’s why.
Executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson says he was ‘threatening to leave’ ‘NCIS’ for years
NCIS has had numerous creators through the years, and executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson admitted that he was “threatening to leave” the series for years.
“I have been threatening to leave the show for a couple of years myself,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “A lot of people, including me, got force majeure’d this year, so my contract is ended. Everybody’s concerned about budgets and all this crazy stuff, so I may be just one of the casualties since I’ve been threatening to leave. So, I’m just waiting to see.

Mark Harmon scored big when he ended up being cast in the hugely successful television series NCIS. Like most long-running television shows, NCIS experienced significant change and growth during its years on air. One of those changes included actually writing scripts for the show as it went on.

Harmon has been a part of NCIS since its inception. His name was floated around with a list of other A-listers at the time like Harrison Ford and Kevin Bacon. But Harmon was the actor that NCIS made a serious effort in trying to recruit. After casting director Susan Bluestein suggested Harmon, however, others behind the show figured he’d pass on the series.

One of the most stunning moments in NCIS history came early on in the show’s run. In the season 2 finale, Sasha Alexander’s Agent Caitlin Todd was abruptly killed off. The character was shot in the head by a rogue Mossad officer named Ari Haswari (Rudolf Martin).
The shock death of a major character left NCIS fans reeling – and wondering why the show’s writers would kill off Agent Todd. In the past, Alexander has said that her departure was due to the show’s grueling workload. Once the show’s writers knew she wanted to leave, they decided to give her the most dramatic exit possible, insiders explained to The Hollywood Reporter in a recent oral history of the show.

NCIS has been going strong for two decades. But there have been a few times when it seemed like the show might not be able to continue, particularly when fan-favorite characters such as Abby Sciuto and Leroy Jethro Gibbs left the show. In fact, the departure of another key actor felt like a death knell for the long-running series, an NCIS insider recently revealed.

For two decades, NCIS has been keeping viewers entertained with its signature mix of humor and high-stakes drama. The CBS series about a team of agents with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service premiered in 2023 and is heading into its 21st season (just as soon as the cast can get back to work). It’s also spawned multiple spinoffs, including a first-ever international version, NCIS: Sydney, debuting later this year. But the show – and by extension, the entire NCIS universe – could have looked very different if the series creators initially envisioned came to fruition.

For two decades, Mark Harmon was the bedrock of NCIS, playing the iconic role of Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. But as it turns out, the veteran actor had been contemplating his exit for years, leaving fans and showrunners on the edge of their seats.
When Harmon finally stepped away in 2021, the impact resonated within the series and among its massive following.
Mark Harmon’s exit worried ‘NCIS’ executive producers
For a remarkable twenty years, Harmon portrayed the central character, Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, making him the cornerstone of the NCIS franchise.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s executive producer, Charles Floyd Johnson, confessed that the prospect of Harmon leaving filled the production team with apprehension. They believed that his exit would likely mark the demise of the series.

Although NCIS was well-liked from the get-go, not even an elite investigation could have foreseen the show becoming a hit that would span decades and launch a franchise.
It began in spring 2003 as a backdoor pilot for CBS’ sturdy military-law procedural Jag. Co-created by Jag mastermind Donald P. Bellisario (Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap) and Don McGill (Numbers, CSI), NCIS follows special agents from D.C.’s Naval Criminal Investigative Service, led by Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The show’s initial core cast included Michael Weatherly (Tony Dinozzo), Sasha Alexander (Caitlin Todd), Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciuto) and David McCallum (Ducky Mallard). Twenty years later, the series continues to thrive, as it stands as CBS’ No. 1 broadcast drama for five straight seasons and has launched four spinoffs, with the first international entry, NCIS: Sydney, debuting this fall on the network.

CBS’ venerable drama series NCIS is adding two new series regular cast members for the upcoming 19th season, Gary Cole and Katrina Law.
Cole will play a new character, FBI Special Agent Alden Park. Law plays Special Agent Jessica Knight. She was introduced in the last two episodes of Season 18 as a recurring guest star with an option to become a series regular if the show got renewed, which it did. Knight is a formidable React (Regional Enforcement Action Capabilities Training Team) agent who specializes in hostage negotiations and handles daily high-risk operations with skill and precision. Sharp, athletic and tough, she is fiercely tenacious and with a wry sense of humor.
Details about Cole’s character, Special Agent Park, are not being released. He is not replacing Mark Harmon’s Special Agent Gibbs though Cole is expected to help fill the void left by Harmon’s reduced on-screen presence next season.

Tonight’s episode of NCIS has what star Michael Weatherly calls “a very exciting moment in the evolution” of Tony Dinozzo — we step into his apartment for the very first time.

Berlin -- Walking around the European Film Market you hear just about as many accents as there are sellers. But step inside the screening rooms and it's hard to mistake a new lingua franca emerging from the foreign films on display: English.
Whether it's double Oscar nominee "The Last Station," produced by Berlin's Egoli Tossell Film; "Brighton Rock," StudioCanal's adaptation of the Graham Greene novel starring Helen Mirren and Sam Riley; or Joel Schumacher's "Twelve," co-produced by Gaumont, the trend is clear. European production companies from Madrid to Munich are moving into English-language features in a big way.
Some of the hottest new projects at the Efm this year are English-language features financed out of Europe.
Take "Ivanhoe," a new big-screen adaptation of Walter Scott's classic medieval tale that Egoli Tossell and Spain's Morena Films are producing. The Euro shingled picked up the project, which has Iain Softley attached to direct,...

One of the biggest concerns amongst web content creators is that branded entertainment will destroy artistic expression as product integration increasingly compromises story and vision. However, producer/directors Alex Johnson and Lance Weiler of the Workbook Project (Wbp) are attempting to do just the opposite with Radar, which premiered on yesterday on Babelgum. Radar, produced by Wbp Labs, is a weekly three-minute, made-for-mobile and web series that goes behind-the-scenes of innovative projects and events across different creative disciplines. Season Two highlights include episodes about the live art event Art Battles, 3D printing startup Makerbot/NYC Resistor, performance artists Undetermined Measurements and Mark Horowitz's Google Maps Road Trip. Johnson, a former interactive strategist at Adventure Pictures and advertising agency Deep Focus, is taking the lessons she learned there and using them to support and showcase cutting edge work. In the case of Radar, the brand is the art itself. Says Johnson,...
