On day 67 of The Writers Guild of America strike, the cast and creatives behind three popular shows joined the picket lines across Los Angeles.
Bright and early at 9:30 a.m. over at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, there was an Ugly Betty reunion with stars Ana Ortiz and Chris Gorham joining writers Brian Tannen, Gabrielle Stanton, Sheila Lawrence, Chris Black, Henry Myers, Cameron Litvack and Tracy Poust on the special picket.
Ugly Betty, based on the hit Spanish-language novela Betty La Fea, aired for four seasons from 2006 to 2010. America Ferrera portrayed the titular Betty Suarez, an unconventional beauty whose unique sense of style doesn’t preclude her from landing a gig at a top fashion magazine. The project was developed by Silvio Horta for ABC and also starred Mark Indelicato, Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Becki Newton and Michael Urie.

A new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at the slasher Urban Legend (watch it Here), which – I am disturbed to say, as someone who saw it on the big screen back in the day – is already celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. To find out all about this movie, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Jamie Blanks from a screenplay by Silvio Horta, Urban Legend has the following synopsis: A university is beset by a rash of gruesome murders that resemble old urban legends. When her friend Michelle is killed by someone hiding in her car, Natalie begins to notice the pattern. Her suspicions grow stronger when her own roommate is strangled to death. Soon the quiet college campus is transformed into hunting grounds for a maniac, and Natalie struggles...

Many TV legends and contributors were included for the “In Memoriam” segment on Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony for ABC. But producers are always forced to omit some of the 100+ insiders who died since the last ceremony. Who was left out of the group that was honored?
With dozens of television veterans having died since last year’s mid-September ceremony, people certainly included were these six TV Academy Hall of Fame members:
Diahann Carroll
Leonard Goldberg (executive at 20th Century Fox and ABC; producer of “Charlie’s Angels” and more)
Jim Lehrer (anchor/reporter of “MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour)
Regis Philbin
Carl Reiner
Fred Silverman

Even though he wasn’t known for his TV work, blockbuster film actor Chadwick Boseman was featured in the final slot. NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant was not mentioned, even though the event was being held in the Staples Center.

ABC is doubling down on its commitment to live, tentpole television.
The aim, said ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke at the Television Critics Assn. winter press tour on Wednesday, is for the network to present at least one live or big tentpole event every month. That includes the Oscars next month, a live episode of “The Conners,” “Highwire Live with Nik Wallenda,” the NFL draft, and a new installation of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” in successive months.
“We love the strategy we’ve adopted now of at least one monthly tentpole event,” said Burke, adding that the network is considering continuing to event-ize its existing franchises and properties. “It’s a combination of looking for new properties that feel like they can thrive on broadcast… [and taking] programs that already exist and event-izing those.”
She also confirmed that the Oscars will again be host-less this year.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke kicked off her executive session at the Television Critics Association press tour with a statement of remembrance for “Ugly Betty” creator Silvio Horta on Wednesday.
Describing Horta “unbelievably talented,” Burke called Horta a beloved member of the ABC family. “Our thoughts are with his friends and family today,” she said.
Horta, who created the America Ferrera-led dramedy “Ugly Betty” for ABC in 2006, was found dead of an apparent suicide in a Miami motel room on Tuesday.
Horta’s family confirmed news of his death in a statement, saying, “Through his friendships, his love and his work in TV and films, Silvio touched the lives of millions. Silvio had an ongoing struggle with addiction and depression, but through it all, he always found a way to turn his struggle into laughter. He was a kind and beautiful man. He may be gone but his light will shine on.

Updated with cause of death: Silvio Horta, who created the ABC comedy Ugly Betty and shared its 2007 Emmy nom for Outstanding Comedy Series, was found dead Tuesday at a hotel in his native Miami, and today the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner ruled that Horta died by suicide. He was 45.
Horta created the U.S. version of Ugly Betty, which starred America Ferrera and aired more than 80 episodes over four seasons from 2006-10. Ferrera won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing Betty Suarez, a smart, sweet-natured and wholesome Mexican-American from Queens who lands a job at a trendy fashion magazine in Manhattan. Betty embraced her unique appearance — including bangs, heavy-rimmed glasses and train-track braces — and independent attitude in the cutthroat world of New York fashion.
Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton, Michael Urie, Mark Indelicato and Vanessa Williams also were series regulars for the show’s entire run.

The best scary movies start with a truly killer idea. For Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, it was to take the tropes of the done-to-death slasher movie and inject it with a satirical, self-referential edge tailor-made for the knowing audiences of the 1990s. The result was a black comedy horror whodunit that had audiences laughing and shrieking in equal measure.

Fox is taking another pass at a series inspired by the life of famed choreographer and creative director Laurieann Gibson.
The one-hour series, previously entitled “8 Count,” will now be called “Move.” Silvio Horta has come onboard as a writer and executive producer. It is described as a music-fueled dramedy that follows an accomplished choreographer who, in order to redeem her damaged reputation in the cutthroat music/dance world, sets her sights on creating a flawless tour for a diva pop singer. To get the coveted gig, though, she’ll have to fend off competition from her arch rival, who happens to be her former assistant. At the same time, she must act as mother hen to her talented, but often difficult, team of dancers who depend on her.

Mary J. Blige and “Ugly Betty” co-creator Silvio Horta are bringing the story of dancing queen Laurieann Gibson to the small screen — or at least a story inspired by her life.
Fox has given a script plus penalty commitment to “Move,” a one-hour dramedy about an accomplished choreographer, not unlike Gibson.

Some of the creative forces behind Ugly Betty are reteaming for another ABC dramedy. Deadline reports that Salma Hayek and Silvio Horta are working on a show called Bastards, about a Cuban-American family who's shocked to discover that the dad fathered a child with the family maid many years ago. (So Spitzer is to The Good Wife what Schwarzenegger is to Bastards?) Megaproducer Mark Gordon is also on board, which makes this seem even more likely to move forward. If they could just get everyone wonderful from Ugly Betty to star in this, Bastards could really be in business.

It’s been more than a week since Fox greenlighted its last drama pilot, and the long pause has been nerve-wracking for all writers and producers with hourlong scripts at the network. Back at TCA, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly indicated that his plan was to pick up five drama pilots, so speculation has been rampant about which project would join the four already picked up: 2 shows about female spies, one from Karyn Usher and one from Josh Friedman; the Marc Guggenheim/Greg Berlanti legal drama Guilty; and a serial killer drama by Kevin Williamson. Over the past week, four projects have emerged as strong contenders — three developed internally and one spec, Travis Beacham’s adventure soap Hieroglyph. The other three are Silvio Horta’s Latino family dramedy about 3 sisters, which was based on an idea by Reilly and has Jennifer Lopez attached as an executive producer; a medical drama...
