Directed and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables was a hit when it was released in 2010, drawing in viewers who wanted to see an old school action movie that allowed Stallone to share the screen with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis for the first time. Two years later, The Expendables 2 was even more successful, and many fans feel that film is where the concept really reached its potential. Mistakes were made on 2014’s The Expendables 3 that could have been easily fixed with a fourth film, which should have come along after a couple years. Instead, it took nine years for Expend4bles to happen… and when it did, with Scott Waugh at the helm, Stallone not only didn’t have a writing credit, but he was barely even in the movie. Expend4bles was a box office failure. But franchise cast member Dolph Lundgren thinks we might still see The Expendables 5 someday.

“The Expendables” is one of Hollywood’s most famous and successful action franchises ever. It is known for its very dynamic action sequences and a star-studded ensemble cast with actors renowned for their roles in action movies, with a hint of comic relief woven into the mix. The most exciting part about this franchise is that it is directed by the man of action.
Sylvester Stallone created this whole franchise to pay homage to the action films of ‘his time.’ And to prove that, he assembled nearly every prominent actor associated with the action genre. The movies consist of, of course, Sylvester Stallone, in addition to Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Randy Couture in the titular roles. London – A psychedelic eye mosaic commissioned by John Lennon for the swimming pool at his Kenwood home in Surrey in 1965 leads Bonhams’ Rock, Pop & Film sale on Wednesday 29 November at Knightsbridge, London.
Claire Tole-Moir, Bonhams Head of Popular Culture in London, commented: “This monumental mosaic, commissioned by John Lennon is a striking example of the Beatle’s artistic vision and influences. Lennon’s Kenwood home in the English countryside was a place of respite from all the public attention he experienced during the height of The Beatles’ popularity. It’s said Lennon would spend idle hours near the swimming pool and that the mosaic could even be seen from his favoured ‘sunroom’ at the top of the house. With Kenwood still under private ownership, it is very rare to see anything from when John Lennon lived there, making the ‘Psychedelic Eye’ mosaic an incredibly important artefact of Beatles history.”

On another sleepy autumn weekend at the box office when actors can’t promote their movies due to the strikes, Millennium Media and Lionsgate are rolling out the latest in their long-in-the-tooth Sylvester Stallone-Jason Statham franchise, Expendables 4, to a weekend take between $15 million-$17 million.
That range is right around where 2014’s Expendables 3 opened –$15.8M– and not far from where Stallone’s last Rambo film resided pre-pandemic, 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood, which bowed to $18.8M. Expendables 3 ended its stateside run at $39.3M while Rambo: Last Blood finaled at $44.8M.
Guys over 25 are the grab with the fourth movie about over-the-hill action heroes booked in 3,400 theaters. The R-rated movie is also playing at 700 Plf screens including Xd, Rpx, Dolby and D Box. Previews start at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The anodyne action comedy, which sees the star buddied up with Woody Harrelson as a hitman, is competently made but lacks humour
The Man from Toronto, a macho action romp starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, is yet another illustrative example of the Covid shockwave still rippling through the movie industry. It was originally slated for a theatrical release by Sony in November 2020, then faced pandemic production delays, then was acquired by Netflix and pushed to this weekend.
The unceremonious streaming dump makes sense. Netflix has, arguably to its own detriment, cornered the market on big-budget throwaway films, and The Man from Toronto, from Australian director Patrick Hughes, is brawn and bustling action with no bruise, no staying power. It’s the film version of contactless boxing, protagonist Teddy Jackson’s much-maligned and pitiable business plan that gets him fired from his local gym in one of the film’s early scenes.

The wrong AirBnB can make all the difference — especially when it leads to a deadly case of mistaken identity.
Kevin Hart stars as a bumbling sales consultant who checks into the wrong holiday rental cabin in Netflix’s comedy of errors “The Man from Toronto.” When Hart walks in on a torture chamber, he quickly has to pretend to be the eponymous assassin from Toronto to save his own life. Yet the CIA wants him to stay undercover to help them find the real Man from Toronto, who is none other than Woody Harrelson.
The buddy comedy continues as Harrelson trains Hart to be him, and Hart has to decide whether or not to turn the Man from Toronto in to the feds. “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” director Patrick Hughes helms the Netflix film, streaming June 24.
Kaley Cuoco, Jasmine Mathews, Lela Loren, Pierson Fodé, Jencarlos Canela, and Ellen Barkin also star in the action-comedy.

Netflix has picked up the worldwide rights, excluding China, to Sony’s action comedy “The Man From Toronto,” moving it from theatrical release to streaming as part of the first-look deal between the two studios.
The film stars Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson in a mix-up comedy in which a New York City screw-up is mistaken for the world’s deadliest assassin at an Airbnb rental apartment. It had previously been scheduled for theatrical release on August 12.
Patrick Hughes (“The Hitman’s Bodyguard”) directed the film from a screenplay by Robbie Fox and Chris Bremner. Kaley Cuoco, Jasmine Mathews, Lela Loren, Pierson Fode, Jencarlos Canela and Ellen Barkin also star with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch producing. Bill Bannerman, Aaron L. Gilbert and Jason Cloth are executive producers.
As the sole major studio in Hollywood without an in-house streaming service, Sony signed a first-look deal in April 2021 making Netflix its main streaming partner.

Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to Sony Pictures’ action-comedy The Man from Toronto, starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, Deadline can confirm. The film previously scheduled for release in theaters on August 12 will now bow on the streamer in all territories apart from China (where Sony continues to control all rights) later this year. Sony will also retain home entertainment and linear TV windows.
The Man from Toronto watches as the world’s deadliest assassin (Harrelson) and New York’s biggest screw-up, Teddy (Hart), are mistaken for one another at an Airbnb rental. The acquisition stems from the deal Sony entered into with Netflix last year, which has given the streamer first-look at its direct-to-streaming movies. Also factoring into the calculus for the move was Netflix’s mega deal and relationship with Hart.

The pic was taken off the theatrical release calendar as the pandemic took hold. At one point, it was scheduled to open on November 20. Hart owns two of MLK’s biggest openings with Ride Along,...

Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek reunite with director Patrick Hughes for a sequel to 2017’s disappointing action caper The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Unfortunately, the best you can say about it is that it’s marginally better than the first film.
Reynolds plays former triple-a rated bodyguard Michael Bryce, who’s had his license taken away because of his multiple failings, several of them the direct result of his association with hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson). When his exasperated therapist (a wasted Rebecca Front) recommends a vacation, Bryce heads to picturesque Capri, but he’s barely there five minutes before Darius’ fiery-tempered wife Sonia (Hayek) plunges him into the centre of a gunfight and recruits him into...

The box office has been in a strange in-between zone, no longer in the doldrums of the pandemic but not quite back to normal either. After Memorial Day weekend seemed to bring back America’s movie mania -- thanks to the openings of A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella -- things have stalled a bit since then, especially with the twin disappointments last weekend (In The Heights and Peter Rabbit 2). This weekend feels like something of a placeholder while Hollywood eagerly awaits F9, which has already brought in $292.1 million internationally, to kick off a season of blockbusters. Despite being a relatively uneventful Father’s Day weekend at the box office, the one big newcomer, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, has held down the fort quite well.

The first movie, The Hitman’S Bodyguard (2017), without “wife’s” in the title, was a delightful buddy action comedy. The drop-off of this sequel is monstrously precipitous, making it a huge disappointment-in-waiting for fans of the progenitor. How can a cast of Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Gary Oldman and Morgan – freakin’ – Freeman go so wrong? It appears that so much was spent on the stars, and a slew of lovely European locations, that there was nothing left for the screenplay or editing. It winds up a hyperbolic mess with only occasional laughs to reward the viewer.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on June 17th, 2021, reviewing the new film “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” in theaters beginning June 16th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
In this sequel to the “Hitman’s Bodyguard” (2018), the Bodyguard Michael (Ryan Reynolds) has to protect Wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) of the Hitman Darius (Samuel L. Jackson). The film creates a universe where Michael actually cares about a Triple A rating for his services, while the Hitman and his Wife are trying to conceive a child. Basically they have to save the world from a Greek named Aristotle (Antonio Banderas) who wants to bring down the internet grid in Europe.

“The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” a sequel to the 2017 action comedy “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” is gunning for the top spot on U.S. box office charts.
That shouldn’t be a difficult feat, considering the Lionsgate film is this weekend’s only new nationwide release. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” starring Salma Hayek, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, is opening in 3,000 North American theaters on Wednesday and is projected to make $15 million through Sunday.
As one of the few exclusively theatrical releases, the film will be another interesting test case as the movie business recovers from the pandemic. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is the first comedy to be released on the big screen since the onset of Covid-19. The genre has increasingly fallen out of favor with moviegoers as superhero adventures and suspenseful thrillers rise in popularity.
The follow-up arrives with a slimmer budget than the original. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” cost above $50 million to produce,...

Maybe you remember The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Maybe you don’t. We wouldn’t blame you if the details regarding this pulpy 2017 buddy comedy had faded from your memory banks like so much post-headshot pink mist. Ryan Reynolds is a disgraced bodyguard. Samuel L. Jackson is a hitman who’s supposed to testify at the Hague in a war-crimes trial. The two end up bickering a lot and saving each other’s lives, things get blowed up real good, Jackson says “motherfucker” a lot, yadda yadda yadda. As a bonus,...

The first Hitman’s Bodyguard is nobody’s idea of a great movie, but under the right set of circumstances it could be the source of a great time. I encountered the optimal such factors when I watched it with some tipsy friends whose idea of a movie night usually features beer and pizza. While that 2017 film was rote and overly familiar, the affable chemistry between Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds and some excellent stunt work, went a long way.
I wish I could report that The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard achieves similar lowbrow charm, particularly for audiences starved for any kind of breezy summer spectacle this week. Sadly, though, it really doesn’t matter if you come to this actioner in theaters or at home, sober or three sheets to the wind. The best circumstance by which to approach this is not at all.

While critics agree that “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” might offer the entertainment of watching Samuel L. Jackson swear incessantly, the film’s reviews suggest that the film’s lack of a plot is not made up for through its stale and overused humor.
Reviews from early Wednesday agree that the sequel to the 2017 film “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” has even less going for it than the original — besides the fact that it opens during a time when audiences are eager to head the movie theaters after a long haitus.
TheWrap’s own Alonso Duralde wrote, “’Hitman’s Wife Bodyguard’ is a comedy with not one legitimate laugh, and an action movie where cars keep blowing up while the A-listers yell at each other, as though that were inherently amusing or entertaining. In “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (I think that’s the whole title — good thing the bodyguard didn’t have a dog), the gunshots are so loud they sound like they’re hitting a metal canister you’re trapped inside. Many of those shots are aimed right — splat! — at the head: This is an action comedy in which people get killed like flies, often with their brains splattered. At one point a truck blows up as it makes its way over a giant bridge, and for good measure the bridge blows up too. The film seems to be saying, “Why not?” To describe the rollicking mayhem of “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” as over-the-top would be an insult to the concept of having a top.

The only real upside to “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” — a low-stakes action comedy from the dog days of the 2017 summer movie season that’s better remembered for grossing $176 million off a $69 million budget than it is for anything else — is that it was an “original” film. It may have been a thoroughly mediocre outing, but it was one dropped into a multiplex world so clogged with superhero blockbusters and other well-established IP (“Baywatch” mania was sweeping the nation!) that any fresh offerings seemed to float up to the surface by dint of their novelty alone.
Needless to say, “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” doesn’t have the same advantage. But , twice the possessive apostrophes, and a picaresque approach to comic violence that veers closer to the likes of “Lupin the Third” than it does to the weighty event films that people have to come expect this time of year. Remember 2017’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard”? No, seriously — do you? Does anyone? You might be surprised to learn that it has spawned a new sequel, “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard”; you might not be surprised to learn that returning director Patrick Hughes has made a movie even more negligible and forgettable than the first one.
These aren’t movies as much as they are spreadsheets; we can imagine the math that determined that an action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek — all reprising their roles, alongside new additions Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman — could make x number of money based on a budget of y dollars and Euros. What we can’t imagine is how Hughes and screenwriters Tom O’Connor, Phillip Murphy, and Brandon Murphy can so consistently turn a silk purse of a cast into a sow’s ear of a film.

Lionsgate Films UK has debuted a hilarious new trailer for ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’, who fancies Ryan Reynolds passed out between their butt?
The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) – are back on another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek). As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stands between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Antonio Banderas).

Welcome to the latest TV and movie trope: therapists telling professional killers not to kill anymore. It happened in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and now, it’s happening to Ryan Reynolds in “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” — although technically, he’s being told not to bodyguard anymore.
Reynolds returns as Michael Bryce in the sequel to “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” apparently trying to put his old life behind him. It’s not exactly going well, as he finds himself tangled up once more with Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson), having been hired to protect Darius’s wife, Sonia (Salma Hayek).
Life as a bodyguard is hard at the best of times, but lest we forget, Bryce is still unlicensed. So not only is he dealing with that, but then comes the pressure of finding out that Darius and Sonia are trying to have a baby. Oh, and also,

Ryan Reynolds is trying really hard not to kill anyone in the first trailer for “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.” In fact, he’s on a doctor-mandated psychological “sabbatical” from doing any work as a gun for hire.
That, of course, doesn’t stop him from getting into obscene fire fights and running for his life, this time while trying to protect not just Samuel L. Jackson’s hitman Darius Kincaid, but also Kincaid’s wife: the infamous, international con artist Sonia Kincaid, played by Salma Hayek.
“I promised my therapist no bodyguard. So that means no guns, no killing and no blood,” Reynolds says in the trailer as he attempts to subdue a bad guy.
“Are you using pepper spray?” Jackson responds before erupting into a laughing fit.

Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson Sequel ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ Moves Earlier In The Summer
After Disney plopped its Ryan Reynolds action comedy Free Guy from 20th Century Studios on August 13, a week before Lionsgate’s sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which also stars Reynolds, it stood to reason the latter would move. The new date for the Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson sequel, which also stars Salma Hayek, is June 16.
The announcement was made Monday by Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s president of worldwide distribution. The sequel, on its new date, arrives the weekend after Warner Bros/HBO Max’s feature musical In the Heights, and the weekend prior to Universal’s F9 on June 25. Also opening the weekend of June 16-18 is Focus Features’ Edgar Wright-directed feature documentary The Sparks Brothers.
Schwartz said, “This is the kind of summer action film that delivers even more comedy and more thrilling action than the first film – and it’s perfect for fans new to the franchise as well.
