Exclusive: The upcoming documentary Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplains Journey has received the rare honor of a screening at the Vatican.
The film written and directed by Rich Hull and Justin D. Roberts – a former combat chaplain himself – is produced by Paulist Productions and the U.S. Army Chaplains Corps, marking the first ever co-production between Hollywood and the chaplains corps. Built around the story of Emil Kapaun, a combat chaplain who died as a prisoner of war in North Korea in 1953, the documentary examines the ultimate sacrifice made by hundreds of U.S. military combat chaplains.

“In 2021, when the remains of former Pow/Mia Army combat chaplain Emil Kapaun, possibly the Vatican’s next saint, are identified after 70 years, much of the nation is captivated by their journey home,” notes a description of the film.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group is acquiring U.S. rights to The Public, the drama written, produced and directed by Emilio Estevez. He also stars in the film, which first screened at last year’s Santa Barbara Film Festival before having its official world premiere in September at the Toronto Film Festival.
Greenwich Entertainment will release the pic in theaters in the spring on behalf of Uphecg, which is acquiring all rights — theatrical, home entertainment and TV. The deal, which CAA and Cassian Elwes negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers, is expected to close shortly.
The Public centers on downtown Cincinnati librarians Stuart Goodson (Estevez) and Myra (Jena Malone), who see their regular winter day shaken up when homeless patrons decide to take shelter in their library for the night. What starts as a peaceful sit-in quickly escalates into a face-off with the police and the media. Alec Baldwin,...

Amid all the media-company maneuvering for position in these merger-mad days, few sectors are as interesting to watch as the big and growing market for Spanish-language content. No one is winning, but lots of new players are jousting with some incumbents for position. All are trying to find that river of gold beckoning from this often underserved market.
Some 50.5 million people self-identified as of Hispanic origin in the 2010 census, nearly 18% of the U.S. population. The numbers, both absolute and as a percentage of the total, have only grown since then. On top of their growing numbers, Latinos use their mobile devices and services more than other demographic groups, so creating digital media for them should be lucrative.
Around 40 million Americans speak Spanish as a first or second language, meaning only Mexico, Colombia, and Spain have more Spanish speakers. Not incidentally, Spanish is spoken by more people around the world than any other Indo-European language.
