In his latest podcast/interview, host Stuart Wright talks with writer/director/editor Andrew Hulme about his second feature film The Devil Outside, “a disquieting, evidently personal examination of extreme Christian doctrine in small-town Britain” (Variety)
Caught between his mother, who’s determined to bring Jesus’s love to a dead mining town, and his best friend who has introduced him to teenage rebellion, Robert becomes embroiled in a spiritual tug of war as he tries to escape his religious beliefs. It’s then that he discovers a dead body in the woods and realises that God has sent him a sign.
The Devil Outside is out on VOD towards the end of April 2019. Follow the film’s Facebook page for latest news and occasional cinema screening: www.facebook.com/thedeviloutside/...

Though Andrew Hulme's sophomore effort The Devil Outside garnered mixed feelings from our contributor Simon who saw the film last year at Eiff, he did note that the psychological thriller is a "sombre British reflection on faith, insanity and questionable parenting techniques" with great performances and frankly, after seeing this trailer, I'm completely sold.
Noah Carson stars as Robert, a young man with an unhappy family life, including a mother who is a fanatical evangelical Christian and a father who is largely removed from their lives.
Robert's mother is taken with the new preacher in town named David, played by Mark Stobbart, and begins inviting the recovering-addict-turned-preac...

There’s been repeated talk in Brexit-era Britain — much of it grimly reactionary — of long-silenced, tradition-bound communities raising their voices against a so-called “liberal elite,” yet rarely has it centered on matters of faith: Secularism has long been accepted as the standard in a society less steered by Christian fervor than the United States. Yet if Andrew Hulme’s agitated, symbol-riddled drama “The Devil Outside” is to be believed, that’s not a state of affairs with which the Church’s most extreme followers are content: A dark streak of socio-political warning cuts through this solemn coming-of-age story, in which an ultra-sheltered adolescent boy begins to assert an religious identity separate from that of his obsessively Bible-bashing mother, though the film stops cautiously short of a more decisive reckoning.
Intelligent and emotionally full-blooded, Hulme’s sophomore feature makes no claims for even-handedness. Inspired by the director’s own experience of...

Andrew Hulme's second feature is an intense psychological thriller with elements of horror, a film about faith and madness. It's a singularly strange piece, not entirely successful, but curiously thought-provoking and haunting nonetheless. For the first half I was riveted, but as the film progresses it struggles to find itself and often feels uncertain, becoming repetitive before ending on a frustratingly false note. There are so many interesting ideas here, and the performances and eerie cinematography all work well; it's an easy film to admire, but perhaps not to actually watch.

LatinoBuzz: Winners of 33rd Edition CineMart Include Academy Award-Nominee Ciro Guerra's New Project
The CineMart 2016 awards have been announced marking the close of the 33rd edition of the co-production market. German production "Berlin Alexanderplatz" was awarded the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award of €20,000, which is given to a project presented by a European producer. Colombian production "Birds of Passage" was awarded the €6,000 Arte International Prize and the Wouter Barendrecht Award went to Christopher Radcliff’s new project "The Strange Ones." The prize of €5,000 is given by the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation. The jury for the Arte and Eurimages awards is comprised of the Netherlands Film Fund’s Dorien van de Pas, producer Annamaria Lodato and Fabien Westerhoff, head of international licensing, production and finance company Ffwd (formerly with Hanway and WestEnd). The Wouter Barendrecht Award is decided on by representatives of the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation, Nelleke and Ellis Driessen.
CineMart selected 25 international projects to participate in the four day event which has been one of the most successful in recent years. Multiple conferences and panels covering topics ranging from “Making the most of a film festival” to “The Micro-Budget Talent Programmes” were held in front of packed audiences who were invited to be involved in the debates and receive advice. Mike S. Ryan (Greyshack Films), Michael Weber (The Match Factory), Winnie Lau (Jettone Films Ltd) and Bero Beyer (Director Iffr) discussing ‘The Creative Thunder of Cinema’ proved one of the highlights of Iffr 2016.
On making the announcement, Head of Industry and CineMart, Marit van den Elshout commented: “This year’s line-up was exceptional and inspiring. I speak on behalf of the entire team when I say that we could not be more proud – we have seen so many great projects, and so many talented teams behind them, the winners really exemplify this. I am also pleased to say that we hosted multiple extremely well attended panels and conversations, discussing the current state and possible future of the cinema that we love and cherish in Rotterdam.”
This year’s Eurimages Co-Production Development Award winner, "Berlin Alexanderplatz" by Burhan Qurbani (Germany) is a Sommerhaus Filmproduktion production. On the jury’s decision, Dorien van de Pas commented: “The project gives us a new and relevant view on a classic piece. The talented director has already made several films about urgent and relevant topics, that currently affect all our countries. Here he will combine elements of genre film with more political and emotional layers, which makes it accessible for a younger audience. The project leads to an ideal co-production scenario and the money of this award will be well employed for casting and further development.”
The Arte International Prize winner is "Birds of Passage" (Colombia) by Ciro Guerra, who is currently nominated for the Best Foreign Language Academy Award for "Embrace of the Serpent," produced by Ciudad Lunar Producciones and Blond Indian Films. On presenting the award, Annemaria Lodato commented: “We decided to give the Arte International Prize to a young South American filmmaker who has already produced a strong and convincing body of work. The project takes us into the heart of an indigenous community, a time and place never explored on screen.”
The Wouter Barendrecht Award winner is "The Strange Ones" (USA), directed by Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein, produced by Sébastien Aubert. "Mysterious events surround the travels of two brothers as they make their way across a remote American landscape. On the surface all seems normal, but what appears to be a simple vacation soon gives way to something more complex, dark, and potentially deadly." On presenting the award Managing Director of Fortissimo Films, Nelleke Driessen commented: “The short film on which this film project is based, convinced the jury of the potential for the feature. We trust that the makers will succeed to translate this apparent simple story into an intriguing, multi layered psychological thriller.”
Hbf+Europe Distribution Support for International Co-productions
Next to these awards, Iffr’s Hubert Bals Fund is proud to announce the first selection of its brand-new distribution scheme: Hbf+Europe Distribution Support for International Co-productions. The scheme is designed to boost the distribution of internationally co-produced films from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe.

The Hbf is pleased to announce that the first Hbf+Europe Distribution grant of 20.000 Euro has been awarded to Heretic Outreach from Greece to support the distribution of "Babai" by Visar Morina (Kosovo, Germany, Macedonia and France) in Greece, Bulgaria and Egypt.

The 45th International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) (Jan 27 - Feb 7) opened last night with an unlikely infusion of glamour in the shape of 44-year-old Queen Maxima.

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Though appearances in main Competition tend to be restricted to the Loaches and Leighs of the world, the British film industry has done well by the sidebars at Cannes in recent years. Films like "Hunger," "Sightseers" and "The Selfish Giant" all premiered in Un Certain Regard or Directors' Fortnight, and number among the very best films to come out of the U.K. in recent years. This year, along with Andrew Hulme's "Snow In Paradise," the hopes of Britannia rest on "Catch Me Daddy," screening at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight. The film marks the feature directorial debut of music video helmer Daniel Wolfe (who also co-wrote with his brother, Matthew, who in turn also scores the film, a close enough collaboration that the credits introduce the picture as "A Film By Daniel & Matthew Wolfe"), best known for...

★★☆☆☆ The first film from editor Andrew Hulme has a promising visual edge but is saddled by a style-over-substance formula that harks away from character development and narrative discussion. Co-written by Martin Askew, on whose own story the film partly bases itself, Snow in Paradise (2014) is the tale of Dave, a low-life East London gangster who escapes into Islam for refuge from when he goes in too deep. We meet Dave (Frederick Schmidt) on a drug delivery in East London, alongside his best mate Tariq (Aymen Hamdouchi ). They don't look like typical gangsters - both slim, with Dave in a hipster shirt – especially swapping goods with burly men from a rival gang.

★★☆☆☆Showing in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at Cannes, film editor Andrew Hulme's directorial debut, Snow in Paradise (2014), is a brave attempt to inject new life into the tired genre of the London gangland thriller. However, the original twists and a certain visual flair struggle to overcome a sense of familiarity and implausibility about the whole affair. A young man, Dave (Frederick Schmidt), is an entry level gangster with a peculiarly random hatred of hipsters and the gentrification of his manor. He shouts at them through the glass of their coffee shops, telling his friend Tariq (Aymen Hamdouchi) that those people are "not really living - not like us". So what's this? Crime as the route to authenticity?...

Cannes -- Andrew Hulme is not a name that many film fans know, but you've more than likely seen his work. As an editor, he's worked on "The American," "Red Riding: 1974," 'Control," "Gangster No. 1," and "Lucky Number Slevin," among others, and he's also served as a second unit director on a few films. His directorial debut, "Snow In Paradise," made its appearance at Cannes today in the same timeslot that Ryan Gosling's "Lost River" played yesterday. It bummed me out to see that there were maybe a third as many people waiting to get into this one, and that was before I saw the movie. Afterwards, I'm doubly sorry, because it's a self-assured and sincere piece of work. Based loosely on the true life story of Martin Askew, this movie feels like a direct refutation of the romanticized myth of London's criminal underworld. How many films have you...

So, alright, innit, there we was, at the Cannes facking Film Festival bruv, sea breezes blowing fru the old barnet, not a care in world mate, happy as larry, sound as a pound, when what do we go and do like a bunch of cahnts? We only go and watch “Snow in Paradise.” The first film from UK editor-turned-director Andrew Hulme, it’s the second sidebar debut in as many days (after Ryan Gosling’s “Lost River”) for which we have developed Un Certain Disregard. Full of tricksy-yet-tired stylistic flourishes and incomprehensible editing decisions (occasional uncalled-for flashbacks and forwards serve no purpose save to confuse those viewers not already lulled into insensibility) and drowning in a score that manages to be simultaneously intrusive and generic, it’s the definition of tedium, if tedium had a punchably overdone Mockney accent. Innit. Newcomer Frederick Schmidt plays Dave (well, what other names are there?...

Cinephiles, rejoice! The Cannes Film Festival has announced its 2014 line-up today and as usual, it’s pretty damn impressive. A lot of the movies announced were already expected to play at the prestigious fest, but there are definitely a few surprises as well.
Leading the way is Nicole Kidman’s Grace of Monaco, which will be the opener. Following that we’ll have David Cronenberg’s promising Maps to the Stars and Animal Kingdom helmer David Michod’s The Rover, two films that I absolutely cannot wait to see. Joining them will be Bennett Miller’s Oscar-hopeful Foxcatcher as well as Olivier Assayas’ Sils Maria. The Artist director Michel Hazavanicius will be here too with his new film The Search, and Mike Leigh returns with Mr. Turner. But that only scratches the surface, and there’s still more to come, as next week will see the announcement of the Critics’ Week and Directors’ Fortnight line-ups.

This morning the 2014 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced and while at least one Out of Competition title is still to be announced, along with the Critics' Week and Directors' Fortnight lineups, we have a look at what films make up the competition and it's largely a lot of the titles that were rumored heading into today's announcement. Among the competition titles you have Atom Egoyan's Captives, which we'll have to hope is better than Devil's Knot, Bennett Miller's highly anticipated Foxcatcher, Jean-Luc Godard's 3D feature Goodbye To Language, The Homesman from Tommy Lee Jones, Ken Loach's Jimmy's Hall and David Cronengberg's Maps to the Stars. I'm jealous I won't be there to see Xavier Dolan's first time in competition with Mommy, Mike Leigh is again at Cannes with Mr. Turner and Michel Hazanavicius returns to Cannes after The Artist took the fest by storm with The Search.

Best Director winner Mathieu Amalric moves down from the Main Comp, Ryan Gosling changes the title of his film, Ned Benson trims an hour to become a rare 2013 film added to the fest, Asia Argento adds a touch of eclectic while Pascale Ferran and Lisandro Alonso add a little auteur clout while our bets are on Ruben Ostlund to shake up the section. Thierry Frémaux’s Un Certain Regard section for ’14 has six Camera d’Or (first-time filmmakers) hopefuls including our tipped for Cannes bet in Kanu Behl’s Titli, and the female filmmaker presence (Jessica Hausner, Keren Yedaya) make up for the lack of in the Main Comp. This morning Cannes director Thierry Fremaux announced the films which will make up the 67th Cannes Film Festival lineup.
