A piece of television history has been sold. The diner booth seen in The Sopranos's final moments was sold on eBay after the restaurant where it had been located went under renovation. The owner of Holsten’s in New Jersey put the booth, which had been in the ice cream parlor for more than 50 years, up for sale on February 28th.
Starring James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Robert Iler, Vincent Pastore, and Steven Schirripa, the series aired on HBO between 1999 and 2007. It follows the life of New Jersey mafia boss Tony Soprano (Gandolfini), his family, and associates.

Former American actor Robert Iler will always be remembered for one role in particular. He played A.J. Audiences all over the world connected to him, even when he was a spoiled brat and a privileged, wealthy boy. That’s all thanks to the incredible talent and skill that Iler has. But what do you really know about the...

James Gandolfini is best known for playing New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano on the hit HBO series "The Sopranos," but his real-life personality couldn't have been more different from the brutal mafioso. Gandolfini shared a few problems with his fictional counterpart, including alcohol abuse and a bad temper, but no one is perfect, and his castmates have shared many stories of his generosity and warmth.
One of the best and most important episodes in the series, "College," takes place in the first season, and doubles as the perfect introduction to what the series would become. Tony takes his daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) on a tour of colleges in Maine but runs across a former associate who went into witness protection, forcing him to quickly learn to balance his work life and family life in a disturbing new way. Gandolfini was great at bringing a warmth to Tony that's evident in...

If you ever wondered how such a blatantly Irish kid landed the part of Aj in "The Sopranos," you aren't alone. The HBO series broke television convention in a lot of ways, particularly for its cinematic exploration of a mafioso's subconscious, but it was also known for its unexpected casting choices. Robert Iler never thought he would get a call back after his "Sopranos" audition, but his hilarious improvisation made him stand out from the other candidates. It didn't matter that Iler didn't look the part — he was a perfect fit.
When Iler's mother saw the other actors auditioning for Aj, she was sure that her son would never land the part. "It was a roomful of a hundred Italian kids, and they all had the slicked-back hair, leather jacket, and they were trying to be like 'The Sopranos.' Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) is hardly the first gangster to appear on television. When HBO's "The Sopranos" introduced Tony into our homes, it was clear he was no ordinary gangster. He was a family man, a history buff, a cinephile, a jokester, and an anti-hero. Tony likened himself to Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) from Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" trilogy and reminded audiences that mobster movies have been popular since the 1930s. The self-aware and hit television series dared to ask: what final consequences should Tony pay for his criminal life?
Gandolfini's performance in "The Sopranos" is one of the greatest of all time. The late Gandolfini showed how Tony's differing attributes are brought out by other people. Tony is constantly putting on a persona: he wants to appear strong in front of his family, ruthless near his adversaries, collected in front of his underlings, and honest to his therapist,...

“The Sopranos” actor Robert Iler remembered his late co-star Tony Sirico on a recent episode of “The Sopranos” podcast “Pod Yourself a Gun.” He attributed Sirico’s presence on set as the main reason he was never harassed, bullied or mistreated like so many other young teenage stars in Hollywood. Iler was around 12 years old when he started playing A.J. Soprano, the son of Tony and Carmela.
“When all the molesting stuff gets talked about… people always say to me, ‘Did anything happen like that on your set?'” Iler said. “And I’m like, you think Tony Sirico was standing around, if there were people eyeing me the wrong way, like ‘Oh, Rob looks really cute today,’ Tony Sirico is just gonna stand there and not do anything?”
Iler continued, “Once we did the second or third episode, Tony Sirico just came over to me and said, ‘Hey,...

Oh Madone, Tony Sirico didn’t let anyone give his co-stars merda on the set of “The Sopranos.”
In a resurfaced podcast episode of “Pod Yourself a Gun” from February 2022 (via Uproxx), actor Robert Iler looked back on Sirico’s commanding presence while filming the HBO series. Iler spoke about how Sirico, who died at age 79 on July 8, took a protective stance toward the then-adolescent actor.
Sirico played darkly comedic mob crony Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri; Iler starred as Aj, the son of mafia don Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini). In real life, Sirico served a 20-month sentence at Sing Sing for extortion, coercion, and weapons possession in 1971 before making his acting debut in 1974 with “Crazy Joe.” During “The Sopranos,” Sirico was a force to be reckoned with on set.

Oh, poor us.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys hit the pause button on fans’ hopes for a “Sopranos” spin-off. Series creator David Chase inked a five-year, first-look deal in October 2021, following the premiere of prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark” on HBO Max.
“I don’t think David has any interest in revisiting ‘The Sopranos.’ And I would agree with him,” Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter February 16. “It’s a perfect series that I don’t think needs revisiting. But we’ll see what he wants to do next.”
Bloys added, “Series-wise, not that I’m talking to David about. I don’t know where they left off, whether there were going to be more movies or what, so to your larger question about a ‘Sopranos’ series, there’s nothing there. And with ‘The Many Saints,’ there hadn’t been any conversations about it.”

After The Many Saints of Newark, the feature film set in The Sopranos world from David Chase, there was much talk of revisiting Tony’s mob ties.
Chase signed a five-year, first-look deal with WarnerMedia covering film and TV, and said that he’d potentially work with Terence Winter on a project that would take place after the film, which is set in the late 60s and early 70s and before the iconic series, which starts in 1998.
Ann Sarnoff, CEO, Studios and Networks, WarnerMedia, also told Deadline that the company was talking to Chase about a Sopranos related series for HBO Max.
All of this was reignited further over Super Bowl weekend with a commercial directed by Chase and starring Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Meadow Soprano and her onscreen brother Robert Iler as A.J. Soprano, seemingly set moments after the controversial ending.

For those still wondering 15 years later what happened in the aftermath of “The Sopranos” finale, the 2022 Super Bowl just gave us a clue.
“Sopranos” stars Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler, who respectively played Meadow and A.J. in the series, reprised their roles in a Chevrolet Silverado Ev advertisement directed by series creator David Chase. The commercial re-enacts the opening sequence of “The Sopranos,” in which James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano drives from Manhattan to New Jersey as “Woke up This Morning” plays. Series cinematographer Phil Abraham once again served as the director of photography.
Chase told Yahoo that the shoot was “fun” and called back to his original inspiration for the series. “[The opening] was a big part of the series when it first started, and I’ve loved [the Jersey Meadowlands] since age 8, coming back every other Sunday for my grandmother’s house,” Chase said. “It’s so mysterious.”

Updated with more ads Super Bowl Lvi is finally upon us, and it feels a lot different than last year’s big game.
For starters, SoFi Stadium in LA will be full. A year ago, the game vividly reflected the grueling early phase of Covid, as Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium hosted 24,835 fans, one-third of whom were newly vaccinated health care workers.
This season, roaring crowds and close games have boosted NFL ratings, with the conference championship games at the end of January posting multi-year highs. NBCUniversal, which will carry the Super Bowl on NBC, Peacock and Telemundo, is hoping that breadth will goose ratings. Even for an event that is the longtime king of tune-in, any increase (after last year’s tumble to 96.4 million viewers) would be a tonic.
Better ratings, though, would merely be icing on an already lucrative cake. All of the ad inventory sold out...

Madison Avenue used the nation’s biggest media event to tell consumers of massive, destabilizing changes coming soon — but in a good way.
General Motors, one of the nation’s most staid corporations, put its marketing heft behind a fleet of electric vehicles, using revivals of media favorites like “Austin Powers” and “The Sopranos.” Verizon touted quickening telecommunications service by reviving Jim Carrey in his role as “The Cable Guy” and T-Mobile pressed viewers to think about 5G by showing Dolly Parton with a phone pressed close to her chest. Rocket Mortgage dressed its digital service in bright Barbie overtones along with the familiar site of Anna Kendrick. The Sopranos lives! Or, at least, Meadow and Aj Soprano still do, in a Super Bowl commercial helmed by none other than Sopranos creator David Chase, in which Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler reprise their roles as Tony Soprano’s children, Meadow and Aj.
The involvement of Chase (and, for that matter, original Sopranos director of photography Phil Abraham) may not exactly place the Chevy Silverado commercial into official Sopranos canon, but it’s as close to a sequel to the iconic HBO gangster drama as we may ever get.

Chevrolet woke up this morning and chose nostalgia for its Super Bowl Lvi ad as the company paid homage to one of TV’s most iconic series: The Sopranos. Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler reprise their roles as Meadow and Aj Soprano in the Big Game spot for Chevrolet’s first-ever all-electric Chevy Silverado. The ad plays out much like the opening title sequence of HBO‘s late ’90s/early ’00s which originally featured James Gandolfini‘s Tony Soprano driving into New Jersey. (Credit: © HBO/ Courtesy: Everett Collection) Playing in the background is “Woke Up This Morning” by Alabama 3, the original show’s theme song, but instead of Tony sitting in the driver’s seat, it’s Sigler’s Meadow, who is meeting little brother Aj (Iler). Thankfully she’s doing so with the new Chevy Silverado easily allowing her to parallel park without a single thought. This little...

Family: They're the only ones you can depend on. Close to 15 years after The Sopranos aired its final episode on HBO, two of the show's biggest stars came together for a must-see 2022 Super Bowl ad. In Chevrolet's commercial titled "New Generation," Meadow Soprano (played by Jamie-Lynn Siegler) reunites with brother A.J. Soprano (Robert Iler) in a parking lot after a dramatic drive through the turnpike. While the duo's hug may be enough to make any tough guy a little emotional, it's clear that the project made viewers nostalgic for the Emmy-winning drama. Originally, Tony Soprano (the late James Gandolfini) drove a 1999 Chevy Suburban...

Jamie-Lynn Sigler has been keeping a secret for weeks. On Sunday, it finally came out.
Sigler, who played Meadow Soprano for more than eight years on the iconic HBO series “The Sopranos,” stepped into the role again Sunday for a Chevrolet commercial that aired during NBC’s telecast of Super Bowl Lvi. The ad updated, shot for shot, the show’s opening montage, which used to feature James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano driving a Chevy truck. On Sunday night, it was Meadow Soprano doing the driving — in an electric Chevrolet Silverado, billed as a vehicle for “a new generation.”
Sigler has been sworn to silence ever since getting a call in mid-December about the plan, which also included Robert Iler, the actor who played her brother, A.J. Soprano. In the spot, the two meet at a restaurant — a callback to the much-discussed ending of the original series — after Meadow starts charging her vehicle.

On a November 21 episode of the podcast Talking Sopranos, longtime Sopranos cast member Lorraine Bracco addressed her discontent with how her character, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, exited the iconic HBO series.
“I just felt that [creator David Chase] wanted me to get rid of [Tony Soprano]. I would have liked for it to have been more meaningful,” the Oscar-nominated actress told the podcast’s hosts, The Sopranos alums Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa. “I mean, I think she cared for Tony. Even though he was a f**k-up and maybe he was never going to really straighten out…I think she really cared for him. You don’t spend seven years with someone and discard them. I felt bad about that.”

In the opening scenes of Alan Taylor’s “The Many Saints of Newark,” Christopher Moltisanti’s ghost rises from the concrete of Pier 49 to follow his father, Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola), and eight-year-old Tony Soprano (William Ludwig). Young Tony skips through the sharply dressed ‘60s-era crowd, play-fighting with his Uncle Dickie. The piercing cry of three seagulls sweeps across the pier. Young Tony smiles. And the disembodied voice of Christopher describes how, 40 years from now, this grinning kid, his very own Uncle Tony, will murder him.

A-list talent? Over here! When existential mob family drama The Sopranos premiered in 1999, it arguably redefined HBO and the TV landscape as a whole, with James Gandolfini starring as patriarch Tony Soprano, who tries to balance his responsibilities to blood relatives along with the pressures of being part of one of the Five Families. Edie Falco, Jamie Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler made up the New Jersey suburban Soprano family, while Michael Imperioli, Tony Sirico, Steven Van Zandt, Vincent Pastore, Steve Schirripa and Joe Pantoliano rounded out Tony's mob crew. And then there was Tony's sister (Aida Turturro) and cousin (Steve...

The cast of one of the most memorable shows in television history, HBO’s The Sopranos, reunited tonight for a special table read to benefit actor and former fireman Steve Buscemi’s favorite charity, Friends of Firefighters.
Highlighting the gathering was a cast read of a brand-new sketch cowritten by series creator David Chase and longtime writer/executive producer Terence Winter.
Titled “Bada Bing, Bada Zoom,” the sketch had cast members reuniting for an online group therapy session with Dr. Jennifer Melfi, the therapist who coaxed Tony Soprano (the late James Gandolfini) through many difficult moments on the series.
The entire webcast, along with the sketch, is available online here.
The 2.5-hour reunion raised more than $100,000 for Friends of Firefighters, slightly more than its goal. There will be a follow-up gathering chaired by Buscemi later this month with some different celebrity friends (see below for details) for the same charity.

There are a lot of high profile movies set for release this fall, but die-hard fans of HBO’s “The Sopranos” are most likely looking forward to fall 2020 because of the release of “The Many Saints of Newark.” The “Sopranos” prequel film, written by series creator David Chase and directed by series veteran Alan Taylor, stars the late James Gandolfini’s son, Michael, in the role of Tony Soprano. The anti-hero made James a star and could do the same for Michael, whose only acting experience prior to the prequel had been a small role on HBO’s “The Deuce.” It was during the making of “The Deuce” that Michael Gandolfini got a call from Chase and heard about the idea to have him play the same character that made his father an icon.

January 10, 2019 marks 20 years since The Sopranos debuted on HBO, effectively changing television as we know it. The mob drama from David Chase helped put James Gandolfini and Edie Falco on the map with six seasons of explosive drama. It also ended with one of the most divisive and debated scenes in TV history. You remember how it goes. Tony Soprano (Gandolfini) is with his wife, Carmela (Falco), son (Robert Iler) and they're waiting for daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) to join them at the table inside the restaurant. The final scene has Journey's "Don't Stop Believin''" playing and Tony looking up at the sound of the door opening. And cut to black. Was Tony taken out? Killed by rivals?...

Perhaps no scene in television history has inspired as much debate as the diner scene in the series finale of "The Sopranos." The contents of the scene, as well as its infamous conclusion - an abrupt cut to a black screen - outraged some fans and intrigued others.

Ok, to recap that scene: Tony meets his family in a homey diner. First, wife Carmela (Edie Falco) shows up, followed by son A.J. (Robert Iler). Outside, daughter Meadow (Jamie Lynn-Sigler) is parking her car. Meanwhile, each time the door to the diner opens, a bell dings. A mysterious man in a Members Owner jacket seems to eye Tony.

Tony Soprano survived the final, fatal-seeming scene in HBO’s hit mob series Sopranos, according to creator David Chase.

Chase finally revealed Tony’s fate in an interview with Vox writer Martha P. Nochimson. When Nochimson asked the question, Chase’s initial response was to ask with exasperation, "Why are we talking about this?" After Nochimson said it was mere curiosity, he shook his head “no,” adding, “No, he isn’t.” Other than confirming that Tony lived, Chase offered no further details.
When the Sopranos' finale aired in June 2007, there was widespread debate about what became of Tony, the series protagonist brought to life by the late James Gandolfini. Some thought he lived, maybe long enough to get brought to prison, but the vast majority believed that he was killed.
