By the mid-2000s, Biz Markie was not only a hip-hop legend, but the kind of pop culture personality that seemed to pop up everywhere. And it was always a delight. He was making cameos in movies like Men in Black II, lending his voice to Crank Yankers and cracking jokes on Wild ’N Out. But he could also frequently be found somewhere way more unexpected — the children’s television show Yo Gabba Gabba!

Urban Fears is a horror anthology film from director Nicholas Michael Jacobs (Night), and gives us three stories that are tied together by a prologue and epilogue. The anthology has these links that keep it all similarly toned and gives it a flow, which I do like, and it’s something I get a kick out of when it comes to anthology films.
So, Urban Fears is a micro-budget flick, and the stories we witness are different enough to be interesting but have these little things that lock them together, like I mentioned. Jacob didn’t do a bad job with this concept, and it’s the strongest idea that Urban Fears has going for it. It’s suburban horror, and promoted as such,...

Imagine a music-filled kids’ cartoon about saving the ocean, with characters voiced and sung by Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, and Grammy winner Pharrell Williams. Nearly ten years ago, it almost happened.
Hoppus recently guested on Kroq’s “Kevin and Bean Show,” where he and “Kevin & Bean” co-host Jensen Karp revealed that together they once pitched an animated series, titled “Bronze Blue,” to networks like Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Much to their disappointment, the show never happened.
“Bronze Blue” would have starred Hoppus, Wentz, Ashlee Simpson, and others as various characters in an underwater punk/pop band singing catchy, eco-friendly tunes. The band toured the beaches of the world to share their message; however, they would have to stay one step ahead of their ultimate villain: The Sushi Chef.

Sid and Marty Krofft have often said that, through their programming, they “messed with kids’ minds.” But that has proven not to be a negative thing, as their programs not only entertained but inspired future content creators.
“Instead of trying to capture grounded reality with their puppetry, [Sid and Marty] celebrated the absurd and embraced the cartoon sensibility,” says Dan Milano, creator of “Greg the Bunny,” who later worked with the Kroffts on a feature adaptation of “H.R. Pufnstuf.”
“They understand a child’s imagination and how fragmented and sweet — but with an edge of darkness — it can be.”
Milano discovered at an early age that it was entirely feasible to grow up and become a paid creator by watching Krofft productions.
“It made it so that I didn’t feel it was unusual at all that I would draw silly pictures, do silly voices, put on puppet shows, make them talk, and...

Pretty in Pink isn't just a good '80s movie. It isn't just a good teen movie. And it isn't just a good romantic movie. It's just a good movie, period. The John Hughes classic first hit theaters on Feb. 28, 1986, and it turns 30 years old this weekend. The film featured Molly Ringwald as Andie, a high school student whose style belies her working class roots. She's captured the eye of seemingly every guy in school - among them, preppy dreamboat Blane (Andrew McCarthy) and her little hipster buddy, Duckie (Jon Cryer). For those of us with small children, the television we regularly watch throughout the day comes from a vastly different landscape. There’s a long tradition of kids TV shows that feature music and comedy – from the likes of the Banana Splits and Sesame Street to more modern shows such as Doodlebops and Yo Gabba Gabba. Speaking of which… From the creators of Yo Gabba Gabba! and frontman Christian Jacobs (who plays the Aquabats Mc Bat Commander) comes the perfect blend of live-action, animation, music and merth - The Aquabats! Super Show.
Featuring the galaxy’s first group of musical crime-fighting superheroes: Mc Bat Commander, Crash McLarson, Ricky Fitness, Eagle Bones, Falconhawk and Jimmy the Robot, The Aquabats! Super Show sees the gang travel America in their Battletram battling cheesy, rubber-suited monsters protecting the planet from the creatures and super villains out to destroy it. Mixed in to this live-action show is an ongoing Aquabats cartoon series and fakes ads for increasingly ridiculous products made by “Gloopy”.

When we last left our heroes The Aquabats, the rock n' roll superheroes had just saved the world — but were propelled deep into space. Now, as The Hub's The Aquabats! Super Show returns for a second season, the band is back on Earth and received as heroes.
"It's not revealed how they make it back to earth, but we'd love to explore that later," says executive producer Christian Jacobs, whose alter ego, Mc Bat Commander, is the de facto leader of The Aquabats. "With the loss of Super Magic Power Man, played by 'Weird Al' Yankovic, the earth is happy to have us back. The Aquabats are still five goofballs, but now there are these huge expectations for them to perform. They've got the weight of the world on their shoulders."
The Aquabats have come a long way, from their start as an early 1990s Orange County, Calif.

Christian Jacobs started out as a child actor playing the slightly older Joey Stivic in the All in the Family spin-off Gloria. Since then, he’s not only triumphed as the creator of kid show juggernaut Yo Gabba Gabba, but as The Mc Bat Commander, has been the charismatic leader of superhero ska band The Aquabats. After a long career in the clubs of the world (coming up on their twentieth anniversary) the band broke into television last year with The Aquabats Super Show on Hub Network. Lauded by critics and attracting kids in droves, the show’s second season premieres this Saturday on the network (check local listings).
Christian took the time to speak to ComicMix about the series and the long strange trip it took to the screen. He’s proud to get the show on the air, and even more happy for it to make a second season.

Those of us born in the '80s or early '90s have a tendency to wax nostalgic about the television shows we enjoyed as kids, and how kid TV has only gone downhill since then. That is, with the exception of Yo Gabba Gabba. Not only is Christian Jacobs (a.k.a. The Mc Bat Commander) of The Aquabats the creator of the show, but it features a constant stream of artists who adults actively listen to, including of Montreal, Jimmy Eat World, The Roots, Mates of State, Shiny Toy Guns, and The Shins. (I wish I'd had such solid taste in music when I was five.) Now Damian Abraham of Fucked Up, who is already known for his crazy on-stage antics, is another associated artist with the show. He recently led a dance routine during a live Yo Gabba Gabba performance, where his wife and son were in...

Updated with a few more pics from the weekend after the jump.
The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival draws dozens of bands, a couple hundred thousand fans and a passel of celebrities to the edge of the Mojave Desert every April, and this weekend the ritual is repeating itself.
The biggest headliners -- Arcade Fire, Kanye West, The Strokes -- are yet to perform; their sets are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday nights, and they'll probably bring out a good-sized crop of celebs. But several famous names are in for the whole weekend, including Katy Perry, who took in the Sleigh Bells' set on Friday night (April 15).

Kirsten Dunst got into the spirit of the festival on Saturday night.

Although you might not yet have heard of the California-based rock band The Aquabats, you'll probably be hearing a lot more about them in the near future... particularly if you have young kids. The long-running band formed back in the mid-'90s and quickly made a name for themselves with their so-called superhero personas, colourful costumes, and outrageous stage shows. They are also known for joking around with the audience and treating them as if they are kids watching a TV show, so it should come as no surprise that they are finally getting their very own show on Hasbro's new TV network The Hub [1]. Band leader Christian Jacobs (aka Mc Bat Commander) is also one of the co-creators of the popular kids series Yo Gabba Gabba!, and their production company The Magic Store is the same company behind this new Aquabats TV show. They made a pilot called The Aquabats Super Show!

The new family channel The Hub has acquired a new series built around the incredibly awesome band The Aquabats! I grew up on The Aquabats and to this day they remain one of my all-time favorite bands. They put on one of the craziest and most fun concerts ever. Little known fact about me... I actually played an evil Crab villain at one of their concerts where the band proceeded to kick my ass. It was one of the coolest experiences ever.

DJ Lance Rock and the rest of the "Yo Gabba Gabba!" gang are heading back on the road with the "Yo Gabba Gabba! Live!: There's a Party In My City!" tour. Having completed their first tour of sell-out theaters and arenas, the children's show phenom is set to play a 60-city trek across North America.
"Yo Gabba Gabba! Live!: There's a Party In My City!" kicks off Friday, August 27th in Bethel, NY at Bethel Woods. The tour is currently set to wrap on Sunday, December 12th at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Dallas, TX.
The cast of "Yo Gabba Gabba!" recently gave a headlining performance at the White House and even an acclaimed performance at the Coachella festival, a spot usually reserved for acts like Muse and Mgmt.
But the Coachella gig may have been more fitting for the gang than some would think, considering Gabba's huge college-age fanbase.

To some, Nick Jr's "Yo Gabba Gabba!" might just be part of a line-up of awkwardly named kids shows like "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!" or "Pinky Dinky Doo." But "Yo Gabba Gabba!" is entering more into phenomenon territory, like other graduates of Nick and into pop culture, Spongebob and Dora.
With the start of its third season on the network, the "Yo Gabba Gabba!" universe is preparing to release its latest DVD, a new music album featuring cuts from bands like The Roots and The Shins, and is even entering the live touring market, already selling out its first live shows in the U.S.
Coinciding with the release of the new "Yo Gabba Gabba! Music is Awesome" compilation, "Yo Gabba Gabba! There's a Party in My City" is hitting Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago in a state-of-theart live event combining singing, dancing, animation, and some special musical guests. "Ultimately,...

Nickelodeon has picked up a third season of "Yo Gabba Gabba!," whose exec producers, the Magic Store's Jon Berrett, Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, have signed with CAA.
Jacobs and Schultz are the creators of the live-action/animated series, which airs on Nick Jr. and Noggin and will launch a concert tour in Australia in May 2009.

It looks like those, like myself, in love with the children's show Yo Gabba Gabba! will be enjoying your favorite monsters on the big screen. According to producer Charles Rivkin, there is currently a confirmed plan for a feature film. Seeing as how Pee Wee's Playhouse can stem three films, there's no reason why a bunch of monsters and a robot can't.
For those who have yet to experience then madness which is Yo Gabba Gabba, a children's show on Nickelodeon airing in the time that people over 20 probably aren't watching television, let me explain. Imagine Sesame Street meets Electric Company meets Pee Wee's Playhouse but done by pop culture nerds and filled with bizarre celebrity cameos. The show is about DJ Lance Rock, a man in a bright orange jumpsuit with a boom box full of action figures that come to life. Each of these action figures are colorful...
