Orphaned at the age of 15, he started working as a
railway clerk and did spare-time acting and writing. He became a
well-known playwright and novelist.
Was an ambulance driver for the French Red Cross in WWI.
His father, Jerome Clapp Jerome, was a lay preacher.
He was named Klapka after a Hungarian army general who was staying with the Jerome
family when he was born.
