Director: Makoto Kamiya. Writer: Shotaru Suga. Cast: Courtenay Taylor, Matthew Mercer and Robin Sachs. When the live-action Resident Evil movies feel like one giant bio-hazard, maybe turning to the owners of the franchise, Capcom, for their help is required. Shinji Mikamise created this universe and his series bible should be followed. Along with one of the original video-game programmers, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the team has gone on to create more magic in one front while the set of films by Paul Anderson are ailing. Quite often, the cut-scenes in this series of video games are more fulfilling in exploring the world that the Umbrella Corporation has devastated. By playing through all the video-games, fans of this series will get to see how truly methodical the mega-corporation truly is and how the people affected by the horror manages to survive. Instead of one central figure, the games look at the lives of...

Last week, Joss Whedon returned to our screens with the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Cabin in the Woods, with which Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) made his directorial debut to brilliant critical acclaim, with a script he co-wrote with Whedon.
This week, Whedon returns once more to our home entertainment systems with the release of The Avengers, the year’s biggest film to date, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. It’s been one we’ve been looking forward to ever since its release, and now it has arrived for us to bask in its awesomeness once more.
My picks of the week:
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers & Jay Oliva’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1.
And Bond 50 – the complete 22-film James Bond collection on Blu-ray.

Last week saw the release of The Avengers here in the UK, the year’s biggest film to date, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. Naturally, it was a pretty good week – somewhat marred, however, by the fact that the UK edition has a violent scene edited and Joss Whedon’s commentary track omitted.
Needless to say, I’ll be importing my copy from the Us sometime in the future, after its release there tomorrow. (It also means I’ll have the proper title – ‘The Avengers’ – on the cover, and not just ‘Avengers Assemble’, a name which I refuse to use, because ‘The Avengers’ is just way cooler.)
This week is just as big a week all round, with Whedon returning to the home entertainment market in the form of The Cabin in the Woods, along with the equally-praised Indonesian action film, The Raid, and many more excellent films.

Today sees the release of Resident Evil: Damnation, the new CGI movie in the series directed by Makoto Kamiya and the seventh feature film to spawn from Capcom’s sixteen year old game. In the beginning the rough edges, woeful (and wonderful) voice acting and script gave the terrifying game a B-movie sheen and Resident Evil had its hooks in us. As much derived from Robert Wise’s The Haunting as the slew of Zombie films Capcom delivered a genre-defining game and introduced a whole new generation to the terror of the flesh-eating living dead. We’ve been asked to look back over the series and explore how the confluence of movie and video games gave us the deadfleshfest we enjoy today.
In the early days it was simple. Buy the license to a big summer movie, take an existing game genre (platform, racer, beat em-ups: the usual suspects) and...

Wait, did you think there was just one Resident Evil film coming out this year? How wrong you were, little raccoon! Later this month, we’ll be hit with another Resident Evil film, but this one is an all-cg feature that doesn’t require the talents of either Milla Jovovich or Paul W.S. Anderson. Strange, right? Next week sees the release of Makota Kamiya‘s Resident Evil: Damnation, another totally CG outing from the director of 2008′s Resident Evil: Degeneration that returns to the (bloody) adventures of United States Special Agent Leon S. Kennedy, now tasked with sneaking into a foreign country to see just what is up with their use of Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s) during a war. Guess what, their B.O.W.s are not being used for fun. To get you pumped for this all-new Resident Evil animated battle royale, we’re giving away two (2) prize packs from Resident Evil: Damnation to...

Trailer for the sequel to Resident Evil: Degeneration.
Capcom discovered a pretty savvy plan to counter all those gamers that balked at the liberties writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has taken with the cinematic Resident Evil franchise, and that was to make their own CG-animated Resident Evil movies. The first, Resident Evil: Degeneration, arrived in 2008, and the next, Resident Evil: Damnation, will arrive at some point in 2012. Leon S. Kennedy and his Justin Bieber-do will be back, as will Degeneration director Makoto Kamiya. G4 has the first trailer, which shows that the contamination has spread to Europe. Check it out below.

Missing a Resident Evil film faithful to the video games? Well, Sony and Capcom are re-teaming for another animated feature, a sequel to 2008's Resident Evil: Degeneration (which was faithful, yes, but arguably flawed). Resident Evil: Damnation is now in the works with Makoto Kamiya returning to direct. The film is being geared for a 2012 release in 2012. Expect a theatrical release in Japan and likely a direct-to-dvd/limited theatrical run here in the States, similar to Degeneration . Plot details have not been revealed, however, Leon Kennedy is back.

Paul W. S. Anderson just felt the cold backhand of Makoto Kamiya across his retarded hack face. Welcome to Resident Evil: Degeneration, a CG-animated movie set in the game series timeline. A cast of newbies and some familiar faces hand out excess stock of undead asswhuppings, including the pseudo-metro ultimate badass who took down the Los Illuminados, Leon S. Kennedy. The story involves old chums Leon and Claire Redfield meeting up in the middle of a T-Virus outbreak. If you're unfamiliar with the series, this is bad—very bad. Leon kicks a bunch of ass and rescues Claire and some other chumps, then proceeds to kick exponentially more ass for the remainder of the 70 minute feature. By the time the movie's over, he's literally pierced an eye bigger than his own torso with a hunting knife, daringly outun an exploding hell and landing in mid-underwater makeout, and swung on a fraggin' spiraling steel walkway,...

Chicago – Instead of playing one of the most anticipated games of the last few years, “Resident Evil 5,” fans of one of gamings most influential franchises are being asked to watch what is essentially a 96-minute cut scene that serves as a prequel or appetizer for what is to come in 2009.

Resident Evil: Degeneration, the first full-length feature in the franchise to be created via CG, is also the first one to stay true to its video-game roots. Unlike the three live-action movies that came before it, Degeneration (hitting DVD, Blu-ray and Umd December 30 from Sony Pictures) moves the game’s plot forward and takes place after the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City and the fall of the Umbrella Corporation.
As the movie opens, pharmaceutical company WilPharma has taken up the reins where Umbrella left off. Although Resident Evil is a well-established live-action film series, Sony believed that the thirst for further adaptations was far from tapped out. “That’s how the production came about,” says Degeneration director Makoto Kamiya during a recent chat with Fango in Tokyo. “They felt a market was there for a film...

At Tgs we had a chance to sit down with Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Makoto Kamiya, respectively the producer and director of Resident Evil: Degeneration, the first Resident Evil film to be entirely CGI and also the first to be canonical. They gave us the skinny on RE5, struggling with needy CG actors, and returning Resident Evil to it’s slow-zombie roots. [Note: In Japan, the Resident Evil series is called Biohazard. In this interview, the two titles are interchangeable.] Ugo: Resident Evil’s story has begun to span the globe with Resident Evil 5 and the upcoming Resident Evil 4. Why did you choose to return to Midwest America with Degeneration‘s story? Kobayashi-san: Leon became an agent working directly for the Untied States President in Resident Evil 4, and to rescue the daughter of the Us President he went to Europe. But what we wanted to do was…this agent, working for the Us government, [we wanted him] to do his thing in the United States. Ugo: American zombie films are known for their political subtext.

TOKYO -- Stripping naked, shooting the sheriff, trafficking drugs, humping in the cornfield, spouting conspiracy theories or blowing a giant mecha-robot off the galaxy... there's nothing these famished femmes wouldn't do to get a free bite in "Eat and Run -- 6 Beautiful Grifters," this easy-to-swallow food-themed omnibus cooked up by Japanese animation guru Mamoru Oshii and four other up-and-coming directors.
This is the sequel to the tour de force animation "Tachigui -- the Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters," which was in turn an expanded riff from his TV anime series Urusei Yatsura. In that film, Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Avalon) charted the socio-political changes in post-war Japan through the culinary compass of her evolving tachigui (stand-and-eat) culture. With only one fully animated segment, this sequel has no unified style, nor the incisive sociological angle and the sullen poetry of its predecessor's Edward Hopperesque image texture. Eat and Run is more of a digestible TV dinner for mass consumption. As a result, it is less academic or idiosyncratic, and has more chance for limited theatrical release abroad. Festivals Will Love to have this on their list, and Oshii's fans will still acquire the DVD for collection purposes.
Eat and Run comprises six stand-alone segments featuring legendary women who perfected the art of fly-by-night dining. The first, Princess Goldfish, directed by Oshii, is the most sensuous. Recreating nostalgic streets and furnishings of Showa-era Japan, it uses gorgeous CGI and exhibits a woman's seductive tattoo with tantalizing cinematography.
The Drunk and the Dead features John Woo-like gun-slinging choreography and a pesky sharp-shooting heroine with a weakness for vintage bourbon. But it's just another pastiche of Spaghetti Westerns that's all sauce and no meat. Dandelion makes some mockumentary analysis of the economic context of the Japanese "family restaurant" (chain diners) and its rise to become flagship of the food industry, but the story is weak and handling amateurish.
Whispers in the Grass is luscious to look at, but the heroine Kumi's seduction of men just to get her lips on kakigoi (strawberry frappe) is the skimpiest pretext for vacuous soft porn. Closest in kindred spirit to Tachigui is The Pop Music Angel, which spins an incredible yarn about the government's conspiracy to turn the nation into morons by TV mind-control and promoting idols. Last segment, Assault Girl, directed by Oshii, is a VFX fantasy that sends up sexy female space warriors in sci-fi films while making a cheeky homage to KFC. Keeping it short and fast, the effects are finger-licking good.
