The El Rey Network television show, Lucha Underground, has debuted on Netflix. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available for streaming with more seasons to potentially come in the future. Current episodes of the show are still on the El Rey Network.
The show is a different take on wrestling, taking it from a pseudo-sports show and turning it into a full fledged male soap opera or telenovella. There is plenty of action in the ring with some great talent like former WWE star John Morrison who goes by the name Johnny Mundo as well as indie superstar Richochet, who goes by the name Prince Puma. Former WWE color commentator Matt Striker does the play by play of the show with Vampiro offering color commentary.
It can't be stressed enough how different this show is. While it does include wrestling, and some rather top notch wrestling at that, the show is focused...

New Japan Pro Wrestling will present their annual January Tokyo Dome extravaganza, Wrestle Kingdom, on January 4th. The show will air live on New Japan’s streaming service, Njpw World, and it will be available on demand through the service following the event’s conclusion.
Last year’s Wrestle Kingdom show ended up being arguably the best wrestling event of 2015, and this year’s edition looks to set the bar very high for 2016 right off the bat. The card is stacked from top to bottom with several match of the year candidates. You will see some of the very best that professional wrestling has to offer in action, names such as Shinsuke Nakamura, Aj Styles, Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and many more.
If you’re wondering about the quality of ring work these names present, Tanahashi and Nakamura have won the “Wrestler Of The Year” award in...

2005 was a great year for WWE, with the company creating a bunch of new stars and really delivering consistently when it came to PPV. 2006 was very different from 2005. Fewer stars were made, although the ones that did break through (such as Edge) managed to cement themselves at the top of the card.
The two major storylines from 2006 were Dx’s long dispute with the McMahons and their associates and the return of Ecw as a fully-fledged brand. Speaking of returns, the ultra popular Jeff Hardy came home to WWE after two years in Tna. Ostensibly over his drug issues, Jeff was given a big push on Raw.
While there were returns, there were also departures. Trish Stratus and Lita, two of the most influential female performers of all-time, left the company within two months of each other. The way they were written out of the storylines was markedly different,...

Global Force Wrestling
Global Force Wrestling, the new promotion that is being launched by Jeff Jarrett, is looking for a TV channel to broadcast their shows.
According to reports in the latest Wrestling Observer, the company has had discussions with a number of television networks including Spike, Wgn, Fox Sports 2 and Cmt. Of those four, Spike would be the best option because they have had WWE, Tna and Ecw shows on their network over the past two decades. Apparently they aren’t actively seeking a wrestling show right now, but if they are then Gfw will do their best to land with them.
Gfw’s plan for now is to tape between 12-14 one hour TV shows during three taping dates in Las Vegas with the first one taking place in July, the second in August and the third one in October. Prior to that, they are doing some live...

With Global Force Wrestling’s presentation of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 9 event on pay-per-view taking place this past weekend, wrestling fans all over the world are rushing to discuss the event. It has received nearly universal praise from “marks” and “smarks” alike, whether they were veterans of watching New Japan (or any type of Puroresu), or if this was their initial experience with the product.
Whether it was the new English commentary, done by Jim Ross and Matt Striker, which opened New Japan up to new fans that couldn’t or wouldn’t watch any Japanese wrestling in the past because they couldn’t follow what was going on, or the incredible in-ring action pretty much happening from top to bottom, the show was firing on all cylinders. Lucha Underground, El Rey
Lucha Underground debuted as a new wrestling promotion on October 29, 2014. It airs every Wednesday night at 8pm on the El Rey Network in the United States. It’s not available on television in other countries, but if you search for it online you can find it uploaded on a number of popular video websites.
It’s not easy for a wrestling promotion to get going from the ground up, but what Lucha Underground has done right is present itself as something different from what we usually see. There aren’t going to be any Grumpy Cat guest starring segments or guys dressed in bunny suits to please the kids. It’s old school lucha libre (“pro wrestling” in Spanish).
The shows are filmed in the Los Angeles area in a venue that they call The Temple. It’s not a huge place, but the crowd is...

There are few Divas in WWE history who can claim to have the longevity that Layla has enjoyed over the last eight years. A 2006 Diva Search winner, she has been the Optimus Prime of the Divas division, transforming herself from former Miami Heat dancer to member of Extreme Expose to one-half of the Mean Girls-esque LayCool and, finally, to the ballroom dance partner of Fandango. Whatever the case has been, she has repeatedly proven herself one of the most adaptable stars on the roster. She can play serious or goofy, sad or happy. The ability to do so has led to her withstanding roster cuts numerous times over the last decade.
Outside of her two-year stretch with Michelle McCool in LayCool, however, Layla has never been the woman at the forefront of the Divas division. She has always been a valuable piece of the puzzle, a star,...

“You’re either Nexus or you’re against us,” was the motto of the original Nexus group, led by Wade Barrett. In what may have been one of the most shocking debuts on WWE Raw, eight Nxt rookies made their way to the ring on June 7th, 2010, to sabotage the main event of the night, and destroy everything in its sight.
Wade Barrett was the first to make his way down the ramp and cause a distraction during the match between WWE Champion John Cena and Cm Punk. From there we saw the seven other Nxt rookies make their way to the ring through the crowd, and over the barricade. This Nexus group would first attack Luke Gallows on the outside of the ring, followed by Cm Punk. All eight members would surround the ring, and methodically plan their attack on WWE Champion John Cena, who didn’t stand a chance.

The smart guy. We all know them and a lot of us are jealous of them for how smart they are. You might be that person, even. In WWE history, there have been plenty of smart wrestlers that could be considered the smart guy.
It’s a gimmick that, in theory, should work. Nobody likes the guy that brags all day about how he is smarter than everybody else. A lot of the time the gimmick fails just because there’s just not that much depth to it or because the performer is average at best.
There have been some wrestlers that have been very successful using the smart guy gimmick. Some of them aren’t even pure smart guy gimmicks, but they are a part of the overall package of the character.
There were some tricky ones to consider like Ted Dibiase and Alberto Del Rio. Are they just...

The Best of WWE at Madison Square Garden is an interesting release from WWE and it’s nice to see them going into the massive video library at their disposal and putting together a compilation of matches and segments that is a little different to the usual things they put out.
The DVD is on three discs and the Blu-ray, which I will be reviewing, is on two discs. The quality of the picture improves as the matches progress, with earlier matches from the 1970’s being a mixed bag in quality of sound, picture and match content. We see early matches with the likes of Bruno Sammartino, The Iron Sheik, Bob Backlund and Billy Graham which vary in terms of entertainment value but are good to see as a history lesson. The Sheik/Slaughter boot-camp brawl is a fun watch but I imagine many of today’s casual wrestling fans...

What a huge moment for professional wrestling! The veteran brawler dropped a bombshell on August 14, announcing that he’s gay and becoming the first wrestler in the sport’s history to come out.
August 14 marked a huge day in WWE history. Darren Young, who has been a pro wrestling star since 2005, proudly revealed that he was gay, proving that a homosexual man could succeed in the chauvinistic world that is professional wrestling.
Darren Young: Pro Wrestler Comes Out
After being approached in the Lax Airport and asked whether he believed a gay man could thrive in the WWE, Darren, 33, showed no fear in revealing his sexuality. “Absolutely. Look at me,” Darren surprisingly told TMZ.

This week’s editions of the WWE Main Event and Nxt had many similarities. These included of all people, Justin Gabriel and multi-man featured match ups. Which one was the better show? I will let you decide.
The Main Event used its format well as the show began with a Battle Royal featuring everyone on the Superstars crew competing for an Ic title shot later in the episode. The current champion came Wade Barrett out and chastised all the men that were in the ring. That was until The Great Khali came out along with Hornswoggle getting his groove on with Natalya when of course the Punjabi Playboy comes out and enters the fray. Somehow, Wade is shocked by this? Barrett then goes to the back and prepares for his title defense later on in the night.
The Battle Royal itself was okay considering the participants. It didn’t feel like it really mattered , though.

Boston, which saw the beginning of the colonial Revolution against the British also saw the debut of the Confederation of Injustice, the Shield against Tons of Funk and Kofi Kingston. The matches like most involving the pair with they begin to get dominated then get the advantage leading to the victory. Interesting the notes that Naomi and Cameron, who were there at the beginning of the match instantly disappeared with commentary due to the unpredictable and violent nature of the Shield. I like that touch. However, it did so like a weird and it in a gap in logic considering the ladies came down with them.
Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose look impressive as they take down another trio and beat down T and Brodus, giving them both the triple power bomb. Also that spear from Dean Ambrose to Brodus looked rather sick.. I know from the booking on Monday that...

Mr Butter Fingers allowed the Urn [Anderson] to hit the floor just as soon as it arrived back in his hands. “I am not just any other man,” he said, juggling the trophy around his legs. “I am Cm Punk and there is nobody in the world that is better than me.” He professed that Taker could ably crush any other wrestler at Wrestlemania… except him. The crowd shared his convcition in spite of their booing. Punk has spent the better part of the last few years carrying the company’s flagship show on his back and although – narratively speaking – it doesn’t seem as if he’s capable of ending the Undertaker’s undefeated streak, he truly deserves to.
So when Undertaker emerged from the darkness to rain down a right hook on Punk, the Best in the World neglected to quiver and shake like a conventional heel is wont to do.

In the aftermath of the Royal Rumble, we are officially on the Road to Wrestlemania. This is the time of year where all of the storylines from the past year reach their finale. It’s also the time of the year when at least 14 minutes of every broadcast must involve someone (or multiple someone’s) pointing and staring longingly at the Wrestlemania sign. Sidenote: This year’s Wrestlemania sign doesn’t feature the traditional Roman numeral layout of past signs, which much be confusing to people who are trying to figure out exactly what number “NY/NJ” is.

Apologies for missing last week’s set of TV, but I’m back now with a new Raw Review!
Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara Vs. Rhodes Scholars
Raw kicks off with the finals of the Tag Team Championship Tournament, a match we should have seen last week. Good match between these four as expected, although it did include a spot involving Sin Cara jumping between ropes and delivering a moonsault which he looked slightly uncomfortable with. As predicted Rhodes & Sandow pick up the win following a Cross Rhodes on Mysterio. I would guess that these two will feud over the Tag Titles after Bryan & Kane drop them but I don’t want Bryan & Kane to drop them! Cara & Mysterio Vs. Rhodes Scholars Vs. Bryan & Kane for Survivor Series please. The Tag Champs appear on the tron and light comedy ensues.

Show says he wants Daniel Bryan right now, as we cut to Bryan, Kane, R-Truth, Zack Ryder and others watching the monitor backstage. Bryan says he ain’t going anywhere, but then General Manager Aj Lee appears and orders him out there. Kane laughs as Bryan yells No but makes his way to the ring.

In what can only be described as a comedy match that would be a better fit for WWE Superstars, Antonio Cesaro defeated Us Champion Santino Marella in quick time, hitting his Equaliser finisher following a distraction from his gorgeous valet Aksana.
The majority of the pre-show bout was spent with the ridiculous Milan Miracle desperately trying to retrieve his beloved Cobra socko, as if his patented finishing move was rendered impotent with the absence of the sock. After several minutes of scrambling around on his knees Marella eventually managed to stage a comeback and located his spare Cobra down his tights. Nice.
Predictably the monobrowed Canadian (you didn’t think he was really Italian did you?) was unable to nail his finisher and quickly ate a face full of mat for his troubles. No mention was made about changing the title from the United States Championship to the European Championship,...

Before I get started on an installment of Straight Shoot that will likely get me pilloried in the comments section, I want to issue a couple disclaimers. Then go ahead and get to throwing rotten fruit in the comments.
Chris Brown is a scumbag. He’s an unremorseful, abusive, violent bully, who is allowed to continue his life and career without any kind of consequence...

Smackdown! November 4th 2011
Street Fight
Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes
What a treat! Street fight starts off with exchanging of holds in the ring, until an Orton dropkick sends Rhodes to the floor. Randy follows but ends up getting sent into the steps. Orton manages a hangman on the top rope then pays back Rhodes sending him into the steps. It’s not long before they fight out into the crowd through that area that always has no fans standing in it. Orton takes him back over the barrier and takes out a bagger for good measure. He throws Rhodes back in the ring, but he slides out the other side. He throws the other bagger into Randy, who drops him with an Rko to take us to commercial. When we’re back, they’re brawling on the top of the ramp and Rhodes rams Orton’s head into the stage.
