- During the 1970's and 80's he became known as a director of bawdy comedies in the 'Carry On' style.
- He went to Bedford school where he became captain of a rowing team.
- After leaving school, he had various jobs, including growing and selling orchids, selling encyclopedias, and writing for an advertising agency, before entering the film industry in the early 50s.
- Worked on films as script editor for the producer Ian Dalrymple at Pinewood Studios, after which he went on to direct several 10-minute Look at Life "featurettes" in Eastmancolor for the Rank Organisation.
