He was born in Nairobi, Kenya but moved to the UK in 1964.

He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2010 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to Wildlife Photography and to Conservation.
His first encounters with wildlife were in Blaise Woods, Bristol.
He has a daughter, Savannah (born 2006), with his present wife Marguerite Smits van Oyen. He also has three children, Alexander (born 1986), Romy (born 1989) and Greer (born 1995), from an earlier marriage.
