The handheld nature of the Switch might make it a candidate for a mid-life-span upgrade, Nintendo suggests...
With Sony's (relatively) new PlayStation 4 Pro and the impending release of Microsooft's Project Scorpio, it's starting to look like updating current consoles is becoming the preferred tactic to the traditional approach of releasing entirely new ones every few years or so. Nintendo is also no stranger to this approach, since it's had a long history of releasing improved versions of their handhelds, such as the Nintendo 3Ds Xl and New 3Ds.
See related Power Rangers, boob armour, and impractical costumes
So is Nintendo planning on releasing any similar updates to the console-handheld hybrid Switch? The answer to that question seems pretty complicated at the moment.
In an interview with Time, Nintendo director Shinya Takahashi and producer Yoshiaki Koizumi talked about the possibility of a midlife hardware upgrade to the Nintendo Switch.

At their Jan. 12 presentation, Nintendo announced the newest 3D Mario title in its famous series, Super Mario Odyssey — which is coming to Nintendo Switch this holiday season. According to the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Koizumi — who was also responsible for producing recent Mario smash hits like Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Galaxy 2 — it’ll feature an open-world “sandbox” style of gameplay not seen since Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Koizumi said the theme of this game is “a journey to an unknown world” and will be departing the Mushroom Kingdom this time around to traverse worlds unknown.
Those “worlds unknown” seem to actually include some locations from the real world, if the screenshots, trailer and Koizumi’s playful teasing are any indication — and without a doubt, the hopping and bopping action of the clip seems to indicate one of Mario’s most wild and eclectic adventures yet.

In the upcoming issue of Edge Magazine, the publication sits down with members of Nintendo’s design team to talk about the company’s iconic plumber. Therein, the magazine says it’s revealed that a brand new Mario game is in the works.
As you’d expect from a preliminary announcement such as this, details were kept mum during the interview. In fact, the developer wasn’t even able (or willing) to say what system the new project is being developed for. Still, despite their zipped lips, they did say that if the game does come to Wii U it “might need to make even more use of the GamePad.”
Listed below are some excerpts from the interview, which featured producer Yoshiaki Koizumi and Kenta Motokura, the game’s co-director and Nintendo Ead’s team leader.
When asked about what system the game will come to: “That’s still a secret!

Super Mario 3D World is shaping up to be, well – lets just say that as an avid Galaxy fan the game has gone from initial disappointment to “Omg Can’T Wait” on my excitement meter. Despite its simplicity, Super Mario 3D Land was a stellar (not to mention visually wonderful) take on modern Mario for 3Ds, so a console rendition is something I’ve come to realize I can really get behind.
In a recent chat with IGN, producer Yoshiaki Koizumi and director Kenta Motokura discussed a whole mess of topics about the game, including why the coveted cat suit was chosen as the game’s main new power-up. Motokura had the following to say on the matter.
When we started out, we were thinking about different kinds of actions that Mario could do. Talking to the designers, some of the things that came up were a Mario that could walk on four legs,...

The "Iwata Asks" interview series has Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata discussing game development with some of the team members behind the company's biggest hits. This week's entry is particularly fascinating, as it brings together members from the original "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" development team to share some interesting tidbits about the game's creation. For example, did you know Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of "Zelda," wanted to make the N64 installment an Fps?
During the interview, Yoshiaki Koizumi, who was in charge of the 3D system, story and character design for "Ocarina of Time," discussed working with Miyamoto on new concepts for the game. "First, I talked with Miyamoto-san about how we should make 'The Legend of Zelda' for the Nintendo 64 system, and he asked, 'How about making it so that Link will not show up?'"
After an incredulous reaction from Iwata, Koizumi clarified, saying,...

Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Mario games are not reliant on storyline and do not need one at all. Speaking with Wired, the Nintendo executive dismissed the possibility of upcoming sequel Super Mario Galaxy 2 taking a plot-driven change of direction. "I’ve talked to Galaxy director Yoshiaki Koizumi about that a lot, but this time I'd like to go with as little story as possible," he said. "I’ve always felt that the Mario games themselves aren't particularly suited to having a very heavy story, whereas the Zelda series is something that lends itself (more)...
