After completing her degree at Carnegie Mellon University, she did graduate work in organic chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. She taught science at a private girls' school. When her youngest child started nursery school, she began to write.
She won the prestigious John Newbery Medal twice.
She wrote 16 children's novels and illustrated three picture books.
Won the Newberry Medal for children's literature in 1968 for the book "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" and again in 1997 for "The View From Saturday.".
