Alamo Drafthouse Cinema should offer a special brew spiked with drippings from the Bloodstone to celebrate their newest infernal partnership. After 25 years of dormancy, Full Moon Features is pulling the Sword of Laertes out from the chests of the vampires of Subspecies for a limited theatrical release of its newest open wound. And make no mistake about it, director Ted Nicolaou’s prequel Subspecies V: Bloodrise is a must-watch for Subspecies fans, and a should-see for horror fans in general.
Beginning with Subspecies (1991) and running through Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm (1998), this movie series remained unique, without having to veil its most overt influence—which is all the most classic portrayals of the legendary creature on film or page, particularly by way of eastern European castles. Vampire origins are honored respectfully and malevolently mistreated in equal measure. The films are love letters to Romania, and all its most hidden occult secrets and superstitions,...

Unruly discovered how obsessed the online masses were with sharing sports-related ads this past year. The marketing technology company released its Top 20 Global Social Video Ads Chart and noted how a fifth of 2014’s shared videos were sports-themed. The most-shared video was Activia and Shakira’s “La La La” ad/song combo with over 5,819,822 shares across Twitter, Facebook, and other online platforms. Those numbers now make it the most-shared ad of all time, beating out Volkswagen’s 2011 Super Bowl ad “The Force” (which held its top position for three years with 5,278,399 shares). “Activia’s collaboration with Shakira for the video ‘La La La’ rose to the top by capitalizing on World Cup fever and the current trend for ‘trackvertising,’ where a brand and musical artist co-release a video which is both a musical track and an ad,” explained Unruly’s Us branch President Richard Kosinski, in the release. “Musical choice...

With the calendar year nearing its end, Unruly Media has released a list of the top 20 most shared ads of 2013. The report contains few surprises at the top while making clear the online video advertising trends that have fueled the year's most viral spots. Unsurprisingly, the most shared ad of the year was Dove's 'Real Beauty Sketches' ad, which has racked up 4.24 million shares to go along with its 58 million YouTube views. It was one of many ads in the top 20 to employ a 'prank marketing' style; Pepsi's 'Test Drive' and Carrie's telekinesis prank also cracked the top ten. Unfortunately, this parody didn't quite make the cut. The second-most shared ad of the year was Geico's 'Hump Day', which has seen well-documented share spikes each Wednesday. Other ads in the top ten included Dodge Ram's 'Farmer' (the only Super Bowl ad to crack the list) and Volvo Trucks' 'Epic Split',...

Vine may still belong mostly to the people, but brands are making some major noise on Instagram. Since the popular app launched its video service four months ago, 40% of its 1,000 most shared videos have come from brands. The figure comes from Unruly, which broke down Instagram Video in its most recent white paper. It found several brands to be particularly well-represented in the top 1,000, especially MTV, which on its own accounted for 8.4% of the most shared videos. This makes sense when you consider how teen idols--a frequent target for MTV Instagrams--are hugely popular on the platform. Justin Bieber on his own accounts for 14 of the top 20 most shared Instagram videos. Other brands with big Instagram presences include YouTube success stories like NBA and GoPro, but the platform's single most shared brand video comes from an unlikely source: Peanuts. A short clip of Snoopy dancing on Schroeder's piano has scored more than 26,000 social media shares,...
