- Was nominated for Broadway's 1957 Tony Award as Best Conductor and Musical Director for "Candide."
- Won the inaugural Koussevitzky Memorial Prize in conducting (1954).
- Children: daughter, Magda and son, Robert.
- Held music director and conducting posts at the American Ballet Theater, the Harkness Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York City Opera. In 1976 he joined the UCLA music faculty, and conducted student concerts, operas, and other musical productions until his retirement in 1991.
- Attended the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School.
