On July 14, 1918 in Uppsala, Sweden, Ingmar Bergman was born, and a quarter-century later, he began to bring his cinematic voice to the world. A century after his brith, with an astounding body of work like few other directors and an influence that reverberates through the past many decades of filmmaking, his filmography is being celebrated like never before.
Starting this February at NYC’s Film Forum and then expanding throughout the nation “the largest jubilee of a single filmmaker” will be underway in a massive, 47-film retrospective. Featuring 35 new restorations, including The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Scenes from a Marriage, Fanny and Alexander, and many, many more, Janus Films has now debuted a beautiful trailer alongside the full line-up of films.

Berlinale has unveiled the three-person jury for its Best First Feature Award.
Us director and producer Nancy Buirski, Italian actress and director Valeria Golino and Argentinian producer Hernán Musaluppi will decide the award, with the winner announced at the official award ceremony in the Berlinale Palast on Feb 15.
The award comes with a €50,000 prize, donated by the Gwff, and will be split between the producer and director of the winning film, while the director will also be awarded with a high-quality viewfinder.
A total of 18 directorial debuts have been nominated by the heads of the Competition, Panorama, Forum, Generation and Perspektive Deutsches Kino section.

Most filmmakers, good and bad alike, are interested in answering some variation of why; David Fincher, in his present analytical mode, seems more interested in questions of how and in what order. In Fincher's bam-bam-bam construction (what Daniel Kasman called "a montage-based cinema of this happened and then this happened and then this"), causality takes precedence over the usual business of plot; every scene is approached as a process which can then be portrayed as a string of individual details and actions.
Fincher's new film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, would sound more like a surveillance transcript than a thriller if it were broken down scene-by-scene. Amongst other things, the film obsessively logs: the characters' smoking habits (Mikael Blomkvist, played by Daniel Craig, is an outdoor Marlboro smoker, while Lisbeth Salander, played by Rooney Mara, chain-smokes American Spirits indoors; bit character Isabella Vanger, played by Bergman regular...
