Chicago – The second major film about the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing (after last year’s “Patriots Day”) is “Stronger,” and it wisely focuses on one individual rather than the bigger event. Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Jeff Bauman, a spectator near the explosion that lost both his legs.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
There are two elements that position this film above Lifetime-Movie-of-the-Week territory… the unflinching look at a man recovering from losing both his legs while not having the resources that other people might have, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s interpretation of that situation. Gyllenhaal is an actor’s actor, using his instrument as a means to communicate beyond the dialogue. I don’t know how Jeff Bauman is in real life, but if I had to guess based on Gyllenhaal’s portrayal, it would be accurate to the real guy. Gyllenhaal’s Jeff never panders, capitulates to false heroism or steps away from the negative parts of recovery,...

Here's a brief look – to be expanded – at Turner Classic Movies' June 2017 European Vacation Movie Series this evening, June 23. Tonight's destination of choice is Italy. Starring Suzanne Pleshette and Troy Donahue as the opposite of Ugly Americans who find romance and heartbreak in the Italian capital, Delmer Daves' Rome Adventure (1962) was one of the key romantic movies of the 1960s. Angie Dickinson and Rossano Brazzi co-star. In all, Rome Adventure is the sort of movie that should please fans of Daves' Technicolor melodramas like A Summer Place, Parrish, and Susan Slade. Fans of his poetic Westerns – e.g., 3:10 to Yuma, The Hanging Tree – may (or may not) be disappointed with this particular Daves effort. As an aside, Rome Adventure was, for whatever reason, a sizable hit in … Brazil. Who knows, maybe that's why Rome Adventure co-star Brazzi would find himself playing a Brazilian – a macho, traditionalist coffee plantation owner,...

Good neighbor policy? Wartime exigencies inspired an intra-hemisphere cultural exchange, with the movies seizing on the new popularity of Latin music. Virginia Bruce: MGM actress ca. 1935. Virginia Bruce movies on TCM: Actress was the cherry on 'The Great Ziegfeld' wedding cake Unfortunately, Turner Classic Movies has chosen not to feature any non-Hollywood stars – or any out-and-out silent film stars – in its 2015 “Summer Under the Stars” series.* On the other hand, TCM has come up with several unusual inclusions, e.g., Lee J. Cobb, Warren Oates, Mae Clarke, and today, Aug. 25, Virginia Bruce. A second-rank MGM leading lady in the 1930s, the Minneapolis-born Virginia Bruce is little remembered today despite her more than 70 feature films in a career that spanned two decades, from the dawn of the talkie era to the dawn of the TV era, in addition to a handful of comebacks going all the way to 1981 – the dawn of the personal computer era. Career highlights were few and not all that bright. Examples range from playing the...

Sabotaaage! It all kicked off on tonight's Great British Bake Off, when Iain Watters exited the show after having his final bake allegedly spoiled by fellow contestant Diana Beard.
When the ice-cream centre of his Baked Alaska failed to set in the allotted time, Watters threw the remains in the bin and stormed out of the tent in a full-blown rage.
He was ultimately sent packing by Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry. However, Watters didn't blame Ms Beard, who took his ice-cream filling out of the freezer in a possible act of sabotage!

London, Apr 11(Ani): A man has been reunited with his wallet 35 years after it went missing.
The owner, Richard Lane, thinks that the wallet was thrown away after a thief had helped himself to the money in it - about 15 pounds, the Mirror reported.
The wallet was found complete with Lane's driving licence, gym and union membership cards, and a payment plan for a TV and was found by builders working on a lift shaft at a leisure centre in St Ives, Cambs.
Richard, who lives 100 miles away in Evesham, Worcestershire, was alerted by his mum after an appeal to find the owner was launched.
Richard told the publication that it was amazing that it's been found.
He added that it looks like someone had taken.

It could be my recent semester spent in philosophy in religion beefing this up a bit, but I can't help but think this line will cause a slight hub-bub in more ways than one when The Avengers premieres stateside May 4th. The line can be found below, which was found on Rotten Tomatoes.
Granted I don't know the context of the situation or the way in which it was spoken (maybe a UK reader can fill us in), but I do know a fair bit about Marvel history and would go out on a limb to say that this line is no accident. In "Incredible Hulk #662" (released February of last year, special thanks to Rich Lane) last year, the above panel ran in Marvel comics, revealing Hulk to be an atheist in the monotheistic sense. This is specifically noted by Hera (red haired Greek goddess reading his mind) specifying the singular,...
