Film co-productions between Australia and India received a significant double boost this week with the ratification of a treaty that was proposed last year and the Indian government’s major enhancement of filming incentives.
An Australian delegation is attending the ongoing International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Goa and the concurrent film market, Film Bazaar. Australian producer Helen Leake is on the Iffi international competition jury and documentary “Brand Bollywood Downunder” by Indian origin Australian filmmaker Anupam Sharma, who also serves as director of the Australia India Film Council, is playing at the festival.
“Screen Australia is delighted that the Australian-Indian treaty is now in force. The treaty provides a framework and opportunity for greater creative collaboration between Australia and India. It will allow producers from both countries to share resources and the risk of financing a film and will provide access to new markets and audiences,” a spokesperson from Screen Australia told Variety.

Anupam Sharma, former Safc CEO Helen Leake and supervising Dop Casimir Dickson filming ‘Bollywood Downunder’.
Travel bans have shut the door to offshore feature films, TVCs and other productions, with a devastating impact on companies and crews who relied on that work.
One of the companies hardest hit by the shutdown is Anupam Sharma’s Fox Studios-based Films and Casting Temple, which this year had serviced only one Tvc for an Indian client when the bans were imposed.
“Financially and in the short term it is a major blow for my team and many of my colleagues who work predominantly with overseas markets,” Sharma tells If.
“We were gearing up for a great 2020 and now all our projects from abroad are cancelled. I wish I could say postponed, but unfortunately they are cancelled as TVCs need to be on air by a certain time.”

Screen Australia.s decision to hand back the rights of 1,200 titles to the producers, effective July 1, will result in the reissue on DVD and pay TV of some films and TV productions that have long been out of circulation.
While few if any producers expect to get rich from regaining the rights, the move has been widely welcomed.
The agency has clarified that the concession applies to all projects, including features, miniseries, series and telemovies funded by the Film Finance Corp. and during Screen Australia.s first year, that were released or broadcast in the seven years prior to December 31 2008.
The handover has been brought forward by six months. All rights minus a 1% copyright fee revert back to producers.
Producer Matt Carroll is looking forward to exploring the potential of new revenue sources for Passion, his 1993 drama about composer Percy Grainger, which starred Richard Roxburgh. Beyond Films handled the film directed by Peter Duncan.

Greg Mclean.s Wolf Creek 2 opened in 10 cinemas in the Us last Friday, one month after being released on Video-on-Demand platforms.
Distributors such as Magnolia-on-Demand routinely release films in the Ultra-VoD window, figuring the upside is greater than a conventional cinema release followed by VoD and DVD.
Consumers pay a premium price of $US9.99 to watch a film on VoD before it.s released in cinemas. The VoD fee reverts to the regular $5 when the film opens theatrically. Producer Helen Leake is waiting to get the VoD buy-rates from Image Entertainment.
According to Rentrak, the Wolf Creek sequel took just $US1,822 in its first three days at 10 locations. However as Mclean has noted, the primary purpose of the theatrical exposure is to support the premium VoD and regular VoD release.
There was a mixed response from Us critics to the serial killer saga starring John Jarratt, Ryan Corr, Shannon Ashlyn and Philippe Klaus.

With his iconic laugh and maniacal mean streak, Wolf Creek's Mick Taylor is on par with Baby Firefly as one of the coolest cinematic killers – just not nearly as attractive. John Jarratt brings Mick to a new low as the gritty, downright dirty evildoer from Down Under in the long-awaited sequel.
Inventively entitled Wolf Creek 2, the flick is due out in theaters on May 16th. We got the chance to pick John’s brain (before Mick could pick ours – thank goodness the interview was done over the phone), and here’s what he had to say to all the horror fans who’ve been anxiously awaiting his return.
Dread Central: It has been a long time between the Wolf Creek films; can you tell us why the delay for Mick’s return?

If there's one thing that stands out in my mind about Wolf Creek 2, it's the scene in which the ever so evil Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) savagely beheads one of his victims. It's almost sickeningly realistic. Now, if you don't mind spoilers, you can take an inside look at said scene.

Mick Taylor is back to his tourist-killing ways in Wolf Creek 2 and, with the movie hitting Us VOD services next week, we caught up with John Jarratt for the latest segment in our Q&A series. In this feature, John Jarratt talks about who inspired his portrayal of Mick Taylor, what he’s working on next, and he shares one of his favorite on-set moments from Wolf Creek 2:
In both Wolf Creek films you do a wonderful job of balancing between a kind, happy-go-lucky guy and a menacing, maniacal guy. How do you prepare for a character like Mick? How do you find that balance?
John Jarratt: The happy go lucky guy is an impersonation of my father who was a fun loving outback, knock about, guy. Just add menacing and maniacal and you’ve made Mick.

The profile of Australian films in the Us looks set to rise in the next two months with the debuts of Wolf Creek 2, The Railway Man and Tracks.
While the last two will have conventional cinema releases, the Wolf Creek sequel will premiere on Video-On-Demand platforms on April 17, a month before it launches in cinemas in at least 10 cities.
Greg Mclean.s serial killer saga may be the second Australian film to be released in what is known as the Ultra-vod window; Fighting Fear, a surfing docudrama featuring Mick Fanning, took that route in 2012.
Consumers pay a premium price of $US9.99 to watch a film on VoD before it.s released in cinemas. The VoD fee reverts to the regular $5 when the film opens theatrically. The slasher sequel has grossed nearly $4.5 million after its fourth weekend.

Craig Lahiff.s thriller Swerve will debut in the Us on December 6 at five cinemas, screening at prime locations in New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, Atlanta and Houston.
