This year’s Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival will open with a double bill of Snow In Midsummer, directed by Malaysia’s Chong Keat-aun, and Be With Me, from Taiwanese filmmaker Hwarng Wern-ying.
The festival observed that the two films are “coincidentally inspired by faith and narrated in historical memories of Taiwan and Malaysia” – and both are directed by previous winners at Taiwan’s prestigious Golden Horse Awards.
Chong won Best New Director at the Golden Horse Awards for The Story Of Southern Islet in 2020, while Hwarng, an acclaimed art director and long-time collaborator of Hou Hsiao-hsien, won Best Art Direction and Best Makeup & Costume Design for Flowers Of Shanghai and The Assassin, respectively.
A collaboration between Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore, Snow In Midsummer revolves around a Cantonese street opera troupe during a turbulent period in Malaysia’s political history in the late 1960s. The film is receiving its world premiere in Venice Days.

Director and cinematographer Ta-pu Chan is a commercially successful filmmaker in Taiwan. “Grit” comes after a stream of commercials and works for television, as well as two feature films, and it is an unconventional rom-com with an interesting set-up.

Hollywood and the West in general have been remaking some of the greatest Asian movies since the 60s, picking the most commercially successful and the most adaptable productions to bring to both American and worldwide audiences. A number of them were of equal or at least similar quality, with John Sturges’s “The Magnificent Seven” (based on “Seven Samurai”) and Sergio Leone’s “A Fistful of Dollars” (based on Yojimbo”) being some of the most prominent samples. At the same time, however, and particularly after the 90s, the quality of remakes decreased significantly, resulting in a series of remakes that can only be described as truly awful, even though, on occasion, they were directed by the same filmmakers who shot the originals. Here, we have included 15 of the worst ones, in random order.

Film scholar and former director of Taiwan’s Film Archive Huang Jianye is set to chair the jury for the 58th iteration of the Taipei-based Golden Horse Awards, the festival said Wednesday.
The awards are now heading into the third year without participants from China after a controversial awards speech in 2018 included mentions of Taiwanese independence. The comments led Beijing to order its citizens to make a hasty retreat that year and impose a ban on attending what had once been known as the Oscars of Asia.
Without China’s presence, the Golden Horse Awards have shrunk in scope, but are still soldiering on. Festival screenings are set to begin Nov. 11 ahead of the awards ceremony on Nov. 27 in Taipei.

Sylvia Chang is known to be a prolific artist, with a record of several films a year as an actress, as well as a new project as a director at least every three to four years. After “Run Papa Run” in 2008, however, it would go on to be seven year before her next directorial “Murmur of the Hearts” would be released, which proves to be a strong return behind the camera for the veteran artist.
Murmur of the Hearts is screening at the Asian Pop-Up Cinema: Taiwan Cinema Online
“Murmur of the Hearts” is centered around three characters, siblings Yu-mei and Yu-nan and Yu-mei’s boxer boyfriend Hsiang. All three are haunted; haunted by memories of their rocky relationships with their parents. Yu-mei and Yu-nan were separated in childhood when their mother left their island home on Lyudao, or “Green Island”, and moved to Taipei with Yu-mei, to get away from her abusive husband.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Sylvia Chang's Love Education (2017), which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from April 19 – May 18, 2019 in Mubi's Luminaries strand.Early into Sylvia Chang’s Love Education, a family of three from Zhengzhou stumbles upon a chastity arch. It’s a landmark that stands in strident contrast with the sprawling concrete beehives of the second-tier city they come from, a relic redolent of an altogether different time and space, where widows who remained faithful to their late husbands were praised for their loyalty and purity. Its exact purpose may be alien to millennial Weiwei (Lang Yueting), but resonates closely to her fifty-something mother, Huiying (Chang), who darts it a cold glance: “it means it’s tough to be a woman.” Should there be a tagline for the filmography Taiwanese singer-turned-actress-turned-director Sylvia Chang has crafted in...

The Pang Brothers need a hit. They haven't made a decent movie together since way back in 2006 with fantasy horror, Re-cycle. Their collaborations have always looked the part, but when it comes to storytelling, the Pang Brothers have failed to set the screen on fire. Which brings us neatly to their latest project together, a fire-fighting action thriller called Out of Inferno. Kind of fitting, don't you think? On the hottest day in fifty years, a serious fire breaks out in a busy commercial tower. Keung (Louis Koo), Si Lok (Pang faithful Angelica Lee), and several others are trapped in the inferno. Meanwhile, Keung's older brother, Dai Kwan (Sean Lau), has arrived at the scene and is coordinating the rescue. He'd better hurry up, that beautifully rendered CGI won't stay pretty for long. Unsurprisingly, Out of Inferno is another lacklustre entry in the Pang Brothers cannon. The special effects are pretty enough,...

Though younger audiences might not remember, back in 2002 the Pang Brothers Danny and Oxide were marked for great things after the success of “The Eye”, “Bangkok Dangerous” and other hits. Sadly, while they’ve never been responsible for anything particularly awful, the last decade has seen them slide into the roles of studio film makers for hire, churning out a series of unremarkable and average genre outings. Still, there’s always the hope that the siblings will recapture their earlier form, and most things they’re involved in have at least a spark of promise as a result. And so arrives “Out of Inferno”, a 3D-shot disaster thriller set in a burning office building, with popular pairing Lau Ching Wan and Louis Koo together as brothers (impressively, the film marks their 12th onscreen team-up), and Pang regular Angelica Lee (“Re-cycle”, “The Eye”) as one of the unfortunates trapped by the blaze.

Director: Choi Dong Hun. Review: Adam Wing. Those that describe Choi Dong Hun’s The Thieves as Korea's answer to Ocean's Eleven are selling the film a little short, even though the original George Clooney outing was a blast from start to finish. They certainly share a lot in common – both films revolve around a casino heist and bring together a highly skilled team of professionals each with their own agenda – but The Thieves blend of goofball humour, quirky romance, affecting drama and inventive action sequences gives it an identity of its own. There’s a good reason why The Thieves is one of the highest-grossing Korean films of all time. Choi Dong Hun's return to heist movie territory brings together a stunning array of Korean and Chinese stars. Directed by Danny and Oxide Pang, who have previously dabbled with the technology to less than inspiring effect in Child's Eye and Sleepwalker, are hoping that third time will prove the charm with this ambitious project. Likewise, Universe in partnership with Bona Film Group, have clearly shelled out some big bucks for this one, not least on the film's big name cast. The Thieves has a huge cast and nearly each individual crook receives his or her own share of screentime. When discussing the careers of the Pang Brothers, it doesn't take long before you start repeating yourself. After a couple of promising Thai thrillers, Danny and his twin brother Oxide scored a massive international hit with 2002's The Eye - and, whether working together or separately, have been struggling to match that success ever since. They have come close on occasion. I think there's a fair amount to appreciate in 2006's re-teaming with Oxide's off-screen partner Lee Sinje, Re-Cycle, and their Bangkok-based cop thriller The Detective, starring Aaron Kwok, also has plenty going for it. Outside of these few entries, however, the brothers' prolific back catalogue is largely devoid of pedigree. Despite all this, I still find myself giving the Pangs the benefit of the doubt,...

The film that many are calling the “Asian Ocean’s 11″ has an insanely impressive cast, and now you can take a good, hard look at them by directing your attention to the image included below. “The Thieves” features quite a few popular South Korean and Chinese actors, including Kim Yoon-seok, Angelica Lee, and Simon Yam. I can’t wait to see a trailer, which, in theory, should be on it’s way any time now. Once again, the film’s synopsis: In order to let things cool down from their latest heist, Popeye and his group of thieves go to Macao on a job. But the mastermind behind this job is none other than Popeye’s old partner Macao Park, who escaped with 68kg of gold several years ago on their last job together. Macao Park brought Chinese thieves as well but little did they know what Macao Park planned for each one of them.

Director: The Pang Brothers. Review: Adam Wing. Few filmmakers thrill and frustrate the way The Pang Brothers do. Early collaborations – Bangkok Dangerous and The Eye in particular – were smash hits the world over. Their solo outings have been something of a mixed bag, with Oxide fairing slightly better than Danny. ‘Abnormal Beauty,’ ‘Diary’ and ‘The Detective’ are certainly worth a look, but recent offerings have definitely been more miss than hit. ‘Storm Warriors’ – a sequel to smash hit movie ‘The Storm Riders’ – was a huge disappointment, and over the last few years we have had to endure Hollywood misfire ‘The Messengers,’ as well as 3D infused (should that read infuriating?) features ‘The Childs Eye’ and ‘Sleepwalker.’ Re-cycle was released in 2006, sandwiched between ‘The Eye 2’ and their Hollywood debut; it’s also arguably their greatest achievement. Angelica Lee (married to Oxide and starring in the second of three collaborations with the siblings) is Ting-yin,...

Here's one you're going to want to put on your radar! Due out in Korea this summer is The Thieves, a Choi Dong-hoon film with a seriously impressive cast list. Jeon Ji-hyun (My Sassy Girl), Kim Yoon-seok (The Chaser), Kim Hye-soo (Red Shoes), Lee Jeong-jae (The Housemaid) and Oh Dal-soo (Oldboy) team up with Hk superstars Simon Yam (Election), Angelica Lee (Re-Cycle) and Derek Tsang (Dream Home) in this heist flick that sounds like it'll fit in real well on your shelf between The Italian Job and The Thomas Crown Affair (we're talking about the originals, not the remakes hopefully!).

“Sleepwalker” is the latest solo effort from Oxide Pang, one half of the twin brother directorial duo still best known for their hit 2002 ghost story “The Eye”. The film sees him reteaming with that film’s leading lady, his wife Angelica Lee, this time in a plot dealing with kidnapped children and the always creepy subject of sleepwalking. The film also stars Charlie Young, working for the director again after the ill-advised “Bangkok Dangerous” remake in 2008, along with Huo Siyan (“My Name is Fame”) and Li Zonghan (“Reign of Assassins”), plus Hong Kong character actor favourite Kent Cheng (who memorably starred in a long string of 1980s and 90s classics such as “Run and Kill”, “Dr Lamb”, “Sex and Zen”, and countless others). Angelica Lee plays clothes maker Ziyi, an unfortunate woman plagued by a disturbing recurring dream about a forest where she suspects a body is buried, which finds...

This one is also known in certain circles as “The Professionals”, so who knows what this thing will actually be called when it finally sees the light of day on an English-subtitled DVD. Regardless, this particular South Korean thriller is shaping up quite nicely. The film stars Kim Yun-seok, Jeon Ji-hyeon, Kim Hye-su , Simon Yam, Angelica Lee, Kim Hae-sook, and is said to be the Asian “Ocean’s Eleven”, and will be shot in both China and Korea. Chinese cinema veterans Simon Yam and Angelica Lee are featured in the flick, as well. Excitement overload! Check out this lengthy synopsis: ‘Popeye’ and his 4-member robbery group are chased by cops for art larceny. Just in time, they get approached for a big job in Macao. Problem is, the job is being planned by ‘Captain’, a character rumored to have scored $10 million in one night at a casino and got his...

By most accounts Hong Kong horror-meister Oxide Pang’s latest fright flick Sleepwalker marks a welcome return to form, and has the added bonus of featuring actress Angelica Lee in a movie that explores the origin of nightmares. Co-starring Charlie Young (Bangkok Dangerous), Huo Siyan (My Name is Fame), Li Zonghan (Reign of Assassins), and Kent Cheng (The Log), the stunning mystery thriller was screened in competition at the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival. Good to the Pang boys back! Sleepwalker streets on DVD Dec 21. Synopsis: Ziyi (Angelica Lee) has been haunted by the same dream for years: In the dream, she would stand alone on a wasteland, knowing that something is buried underneath. The only one who could give her comfort is her designer friend Eric (Li Zonghan), to whom she would reveal her weird dreams. She is approached by police sergeant Madam Ou (Huo Siyan) to assist in...

In order to get everyone interesting in director Oxide Pang’s upcoming supernatural horror outing “Sleepwalker 3D”, we now have a new poster and a brand new trailer to sink our cinematic teeth into. The poster, as you may already have guessed, resides above, while the latest trailer has taken its regular position at the bottom of the article. And while I haven’t been blown away by Pang’s recent output — “Recycle”, however, was pretty awesome — I am curious to see how he tackles the sleepwalking angle. Could be good. Here’s what the film is all about: Yee (Lee Sinje) is an ordinary woman living a mundane life. Over the years, she has been bothered by a repeated dream, in that dream she stands alone on wasteland with a doubt of the mystery being buried underneath. Yee’s nightmares are getting more and more sophisticated. Sometimes she finds...

Angelica Lee Sinje is sleepwalking, and her curious nocturnal adventures may prove shockingly murderous in director Oxide Pang’s latest genre effort “Sleepwalker 3D”. However, it’s just not a simple case of sleepwalking. Heavens, no. That would be way too simple. To keep things interesting, Pang has included a police investigation, some curious supernatural shenanigans, and plenty of bizarro dream sequences. The film definitely looks promising, and should scare up quite a bit of business when it opens in Hong Kong on November 3rd, 2011. Fans of high-concept horror will be enamored by the embedded trailer, which you can find lurking below this passage. As of this writing, a North American release date has not been set. Damn it. The latest supernatural thriller from Hong Kong director Oxide Pang sees him flying solo without twin brother and regular collaborator Danny Pang, but reuniting professionally with wife Angelica Lee Sinje. Due for release in Hong Kong on 3 November, Universe has finally released the first trailer, which appears to again combine spooky atmospherics with CG-heavy otherworldly environments that featured heavily in the earlier Pang/Lee features, The Eye and Recycle. The trailer depicts Lee sporting a rather shocking mop of hair which achieves the incredibly difficult task of making her look decidedly less than attractive. Her character appears to be a long-suffering somnabulist who may or may not have murdered her husband during one of her nighttime excursions. Huo Si Yan plays the cop out to solve...

Oxide Pang flies solo this time out, but instead of working alongside brother Danny, he's bringing his good lady Angelica Lee Sinje along for the ride. Their previous collaborations, The Eye and Re-cycle represent the very best of the Pangs output and from what I've seen of this one so far, they could well be back on winning track here. Add to the mix the angle of 3D - not a technology I'm normally a fan of - but Pang has certainly shown in the past that he knows how to use it effectively, and we have the makings of a great-looking and hopefully atmospheric little horror movie. We hope to be able to share the film's official trailer with you in the coming days,...

At the same time that the Hong Kong Film Festival is held (currently in full swing), Filmart (21 - 24 April) unveiled several titles that caught our eye and that we look forward to in the near future. Among the noteworthy items promoted at the event, the lineup at Emperor Motion Pictures includes four major films, "The Great Magician", "The Last Supper", "The Viral Factor" and "Diva". "The Great Magician" is now currently in production, starring Tony Leung and directed by Derek Yee, centering on a story of a magician who saves his country with his tricks and illusions. "The Last Supper" will be directed by Lu Chuan, who won the best director award of Asian Film Awards last year. He would pair up heavyweights stars Liu Ye, Chang Chen and Daniel Wu on this new historical drama. "The Viral Factor" will mark another collaboration between director Dante Lam and actor Nicholas Tse,...

“The Child’s Eye” is the latest entry in the Pang Brothers’ “Eye” horror series, one that began in fine fashion with 2002’s highly effective “The Eye” (starring Angelica Lee), before repeating itself with “The Eye 2” two years later (with Qi Shu this time seeing ghosts), and the curiously named “The Eye 10” three years after that. “The Child’s Eye” boasts the Pangs working in the 3D format, and indeed, much of the film’s selling points seem to be those “look out, it’s coming right at you!” 3D elements. As to the film itself? Well let’s just say this: “The Child’s Eye” should have been sold as a comedy, because I laughed more times than I cringed in fear. Unfortunately, I think everyone involved in the film were going for scares. 2002’s “The Eye” was so good that it spawned a Hollywood remake starring Jessica Alba,...
