[This story contains spoilers from Prime Video’s film The Idea Of You.]
In the new romantic movie The Idea of You, Nicholas Galitzine — playing Hayes Campbell, a One Direction-like lead singer of a boy band — falls hard for Anne Hathaway’s art gallery owner character, Solène.
Over the course of the new couple’s relationship ups and downs, a watch plays a surprisingly prominent role, becoming a major plot point in the film.
Early on, after Solène — a single mom who’s more than a decade older than Hayes — tells him, “I can’t do this. Because you’re you and I’m me and we just don’t fit,” the lovestruck singer surreptitiously leaves the watch he’s wearing on a table in her house before he departs. “We’ll see,” he says.
From there on out, the watch is sometimes worn by her (when things are going well) and then at other times by him (usually...

The biggest rising star of the moment, Nicholas Galitzine is everyone’s favorite, including his famous colleagues. Having recently starred in Starz’s unhinged historical drama show Mary & George alongside Julianne Moore, Galitzine never moved back to the shadows jumping straight to his other big release this year, Michael Showalter’s romcom The Idea of You with Anne Hathaway in the leading role.
While still promoting Prime Video’s new hit, the actor revealed he’d received a very peculiar gift from Hathaway after they struggled filming some specific scenes.
In his recent interview to British GQ, Galitzine said both he and Anne Hathaway had some trouble while filming their kissing scenes. According to the actor, they were so tense that their “intimacy coordinator would come in and give us a Listerine strip” so that both actors would feel more confident fresh mint breath.

Costume designer Jacqueline Demeterio didn’t have to look much further than her own Silver Lake-residing friends when pulling inspiration for Anne Hathaway’s Sólene in “The Idea of You.”
In the buzzy new rom-com, Hathaway stars as a 40 year-old art gallery owner and divorcee who falls in love with the 24 year-old heartthrob singer of the boy band August Moon, played by Nicholas Galitzine. Aside from the whirlwind age-gap romance, first depicted in Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel of the same name, the film’s most compelling aspects are the high-fashion ensembles worn by both Sólene and Galitizine’s Hayes. And as the pair jets from Coachella to New York to Paris, the clothes also ground their fantastical affair in reality.

Don’t you hate it when Hollywood changes the ending to your favorite book when adapting it into a film? The process is sacrilege to some readers, but it can often lead to films improving upon their source material. The latest bestseller to see its ending changed is “The Idea of You” — and a recent piece by IndieWire’s Erin Strecker endorses the changes screenwriters Michael Showalter and Jennifer Westfeldt made in adapting Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel.
However, it turns out these changes, well regarded as they are by some, did not receive input from Lee herself. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the author said she “was not involved at all in the adaptation.”
“I have not even spoken to [director] Michael [Showalter] yet,” Lee said. “But I’m looking forward to meeting him, so no, I haven’t spoken to him about any changes. My...

Adaptation and Vision: Exploring the Changes in The Idea of You The Idea of You, directed by Michael Showalter and starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, diverges notably from its source material, the 2017 novel by Robinne Lee. This departure chiefly concerns the film’s ending, transforming a story that originally ended in separation into one that offers a more uplifting conclusion. Director’s Insight on Narrative Choices During a recent interview, Showalter discussed his decision to modify the novel’s conclusion. We wanted to give the audience a hopeful ending, he revealed. This choice reflects a broader trend within cinematic adaptations, where

Robinne Lee, the author of The Idea of You, regrets initially stating that the story was inspired by Harry Styles.
In a new interview, Lee explains why the fictional British boy band member, Hayes Campbell, was not just inspired by the former One Direction member after many have compared it to writing fan fiction.
“I don’t consider it fan fiction at all,” Lee said in an interview with EW. “Harry was one of multiple people who went into creating Hayes Campbell — he was the only one in a British boy band that was current at the time, I guess, and so that’s what people have latched onto. It’s unfortunate because it’s being used as clickbait, and when I’m writing for Hayes, I’m not picturing Harry Styles.”
Lee said that the fictional character, played by Nicholas Galitzine in the Prime Video film, us a combination of many real-life people.

Cathy Schulman has to really like something if she’s going to even try to get it made. As an independent producer in an increasingly constrained marketplace, actually filming something is an elusive endgame. “In the old days, producers would flip a book to studio or a network and say, ‘Will you buy it for me, develop it and make it into a movie?'” says Schulman, who optioned Robinne Lee’s novel The Idea of You alongside fellow producer Gabrielle Union years before ever presenting it to a suit. “That wasn’t going to work here.”
Fortunately, Anne Hathaway’s interest in the romantic dramedy about a single mother who embarks on an unlikely relationship with the lead singer of a boy band (Nicholas Galitzine) helped ensure that Schulman’s efforts weren’t in vain. Amazon MGM Studios boarded the project in 2021, and it’s now streaming on Prime...

Romance is complicated. The meshing together of two or more people isn’t designed to be a smooth process and art has reflected that for generations, most recently in the new Amazon MGM rom-com “The Idea of You”. In honor of the film dropping on Prime Video, IndieWire has compiled a list of the best age-gap romance films to enjoy after watching Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine’s jaunt within the genre. Fiona Apple is the go-to songwriter for exorcising your romantic demons, ruing the ones you loved, the ones who didn’t love you back, the ones you pushed away amid yet another freefall of your own design. In 2022, Nicholas Galitzine was on the main stage of “Coachella”, flanked by bandmates Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham Jr., Vik White, and Dakota Adan.
Surrounding them were 5,000 screaming fans, chanting at the top of their lungs, “August Moon! August Moon! But for Galitzine, this was all brand new.

Captain America: Civil War beautifully set the stage in a way for the Avengers: Infinity War. The Idea of You centers on 40-year-old art gallery owner Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) who, after being forced to take her daughter and friends to Coachella after her ex-husband bails on the plans, unexpectedly meets Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), British front man to the uber-popular boy band August Moon. Despite Solène being unfazed by the pandemonium and allure of the young singers, their meet-cute eventually turns into a steamy romance, but not without the hiccups of fame and attention that come as a result.

Hayes’ age In the book, Hayes is just 20 years old and Solène is 39. Hayes is aged up to 24 in the movie. The Idea of You Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine, Ella Rubin, and Reid Scott
Director: Michael Showalter
The Idea of You Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: The chemistry between Hathaway and Galitzine is unique, and their characters’ relationship feels genuine in the film.
What’s Bad: The film feels outdated in its concepts, as the One Direction angle has not been popular for quite a while. An update to the idea would have made the film better.
Loo Break: The film’s length feels quite right, but the movie’s start feels a bit too redundant, and the same happens towards the end.
Watch or Not?: Watch if you are a fan of romantic comedies, but be ready for this to be more drama than comedy.
Language: English
Available On: Amazon Prime Video
Runtime: 115 Minutes.

That’s why it’s such a treat, then, that the Anne Hathaway-starring adaptation of “The Idea of You,” which hit Prime Video on May 2, is such a steamy, fun delight that actually improves upon its source material.
It stays loyal to the book’s fantasy-driven plot: Hathaway portrays Solène, a newly-single mom of a teenager who — after meeting backstage at a concert in a pinch-me moment of serendipity — falls into a whirlwind, sex-forward romance with the lead singer of an international boy band, Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine).

The 29-year-old English actor had a runaway streaming hit last year with “Red, White & Royal Blue,” starring as a prince caught up in a closeted gay romance with an American politico (Taylor Zakhar Perez). He played a dopey quarterback in the “Heathers”-inspired high school comedy “Bottoms,” and this spring starred as a queer George Villiers, aka the First Duke of Buckingham.
Now, he’s a full-blown romantic drama lead in “The Idea of You,” starring as Hayes Campbell, the frontman of a One Direction-inspired pop group who falls for a divorced single mother, Solène, played by Anne Hathaway. Directed by Michael Showalter and written by Jennifer Westfeldt, the film situates us in the moony dazedness of new love that becomes Solène’s fixation. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Idea of You.] We’ve got to talk about that ending. Prime Video‘s The Idea of You ends on a very different note from Robinne Lee’s bestselling novel, which follows 40-year-old single mom Solène (Anne Hathaway) and her romance with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the 24-year-old lead singer of the widely popular boy band August Moon. The end of the film flashes forward five years after Solène and Hayes’ breakup. In the final moments, Hayes shows up at Solène’s art gallery, giving viewers hope that these two will get back together. However, that’s not how Solène and Hayes’ story ended in the book. “There’s a very long history in romantic movies of changing the ending so that the two main characters are together at the end. There’s a bit of a pragmatic answer to this, which is that movie audiences just want ...

In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

The Idea of You should never work as well as it should, but the rom-com does. A whimsical tale full of heart, Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine is an addictive, often hilarious, and meaningful addition to the genre that has made a comeback of late. This is an old-fashioned effort that swoons the audience’s expectations to its heart’s contents.

Review: Whether you like it or not, we live in an era when fan fiction can be turned into big-screen feature films. From Twilight grew Fifty Shades of Grey, and both franchises made a lot of money for their producers. The popularity of boy band-turned-solo artist Harry Styles has been transformed into a bestselling novel and now the feature film The Idea of You. If the mere idea of the source of this story fills you with dread, this is not the movie for you. But, if you are a fan of well-acted movies, Anne Hathaway delivers again. The Idea of You is much...

When the trailer for The Idea of You first came out, many people mistakenly believed the rom-com is based on Harry Styles fan fiction. To be fair, it wouldn’t be the first time Hollywood looked to the One Direction singer for inspiration — Netflix’s After films, which are based on the books by Anna Todd, have direct roots in the author’s Wattpad fics about him.
But unlike After, The Idea of You (which premieres May 2 on Prime Video) was never fan fiction. Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, the film centers on 40-year-old single mom Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) who unexpectedly embarks on a whirlwind romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the dreamy lead singer of popular boy band August Moon.

The Idea of You, based on Robinne Lee’s novel of the same name, isn’t just about a woman falling in love with a pop star. Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom, gets involved in a passionate romance with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the 24-year-old lead singer of the boy band August Moon. Since the book’s release in 2017, there’s been criticism of the age-gap romance at the center of the story.. To some, Solène and Hayes’ relationship is problematic because of their age difference. The backlash resurfaced online ahead of the film adaptation’s release. “I think it’s so derogatory,” director Michael Showalter told TV Insider during SXSW about the age-gap criticism surrounding the movie. “As a director, I feel like I get to know every character in my movies, so I get to experience the emotions of everybody I get ...
