Seven years after the premiere of “Twin Peaks: The Return,” and the third season of David Lynch’s small-town-turned-cosmic nightmare is still reverberating for a new generation of filmmakers.
So it’s apt that Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a suburban lucid dream of a movie about how the media we consume can then consume us, feels like the first film to truly capture the dread and dissonance of Lynch’s reinvention — a series that was itself a comment on how you can truly never go home again, and how rose-colored memories become warped and monstrous by the passage of time.
“I Saw the TV Glow” follows Owen (Justice Smith), a gloomy New Jersey teen obsessed with a YA TV series called “The Pink Opaque,” about two physically apart teen girls who share a psychic connection that could help them defeat a moon-faced monster called Mr. Melancholy.

Pop music phenoms come and go, fall in and out of favor and sometimes fade into total obscurity. Very few remain relevant a decade removed from their initial success, and you can count on maybe two hands the number of artists who can knock out a new song or reissue and top the Billboard charts 50-plus years after their debut.
And then there's The Beatles.
From the moment they scored their first number one hit in the U.K. with 1963's "From Me to You," The Beatles drew on their multitude of musical influences — blues, country, rockabilly, and the sui generis soul sounds pulsating out of Motown — to create perfectly constructed, infectiously catchy singles that earwormed their way into the fabric of your being. Within three years of breaking big in the U.S., they released the pioneering folk-rock LP "Rubber Soul," flirted with psychedelia and raga on the expansive "Revolver,...

J.R. was waiting in line with maybe 200 fellow fans to spend a moment getting the autograph of – and perhaps taking a selfie with – Christina Ricci, the actress who made her debut in the “Addams Family” movies in the 1990s who is now an Emmy-nominated star on the Showtime series “Yellowjackets” as well as a regular on Netflix’s “Wednesday.” The setting on Saturday was the Hollywood Autograph Show at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, a three-times-a-year movie and memorabilia event where fans can come to lay eyes on some old-time celebrity favorites, get their name in ink, pose for a selfie and maybe pick up a book or vintage photograph.
Eighty or so celebrities staked out tables to sign their name and pix for a fee. J.R. was one of those who got hooked on attending these shows a few years back and now never misses one.

In many respects, even attempting to write this piece is foolhardy. Articles like this are usually the space to explore an ending that alters a franchise's trajectory, a climactic twist, or something ambiguous that makes you choose what you believed happened. These can all be explained through logic and rationality, and often times, the creators of these works themselves will do interviews about how they see their endings. Storytelling in a visual medium — especially with mainstream Hollywood storytelling — tends to be rather blunt in its desire to impart some sort of message or arrive at a conclusion that satisfies the dramatic and emotional elements of the story.
But we are talking about David Lynch here, the preeminent American cinematic surrealist of the last half century. The word "Lynchian" has become synonymous with something being odd and unexplainable in any movie. This is a man who said "Eraserhead" was his most...

The wheels are not close to coming off the “Carpool Karaoke” franchise, as a series of new episodes was announced Monday morning for Apple TV+, featuring stars ranging from pop singer Avril Lavigne to TV star Sheryl Lee Ralph to current Broadway queen Lea Michele.
The eight new “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” episodes will bow globally on the platform June 23.
While most of the installments pair up two stars, three of the episodes promise to incorporate the cast of a series: Netflix’s “Girls5eva,” CBS’ “Ghosts” and Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty.”
Some of the partners in carpooling have a joint project to promote. Alison Brie and Danny Pudi, for instance, are not only mutual “Community” alumni but recently reunited for the rom-com “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Not coincidentally, a teaser that was already posted for their “Karaoke” episode has them singing the Gotye song of that same name.

On Sept. 12, Quinta Brunson received the award for outstanding writing for a comedy series at the 2022 Emmys. Brunson, who also stars in "Abbott Elementary," made history with the win, becoming the third Black writer and second Black woman writer to receive the honor, per E! News. Fans were surprised by Olivia Newton-John and Norm Macdonald’s absence from the Emmys 2022’s In Memoriam segment.
The Australian actor and singer, best known for her leading role as Sandy in Grease, died in August of this year from breast cancer. She was 73.
While Newton-John was mostly a film actor, she appeared in a number of television shows, including Australian singing series Kommotion, 1993’s drama series Snowy River: The McGregor Saga, and the one-season 2008 show Sordid Lives: The Series.
Meanwhile, viewers were confused by Canadian comedian Norm Macdonald’s absence from the night’s tributes.
However, the Saturday Night Live alum passed away in 2021 and was honoured during last year’s award ceremony. This year he received three posthumous nominations for his Netflix special Nothing Special, which was partly why fans were shocked not to see him in the in memorial segment – unaware that he was celebrated last year.

The 2022 Emmys saw TV stars from around the world gather at the Microsft Theater in Los Angeles to celebrate the best in television.
While there were a handful of repeat champions and first-time winners during Monday (12 September) night’s ceremony, there were certainly a number of snubs and surprises as well.
Christina Ricci misses out to Julia Garner
After Julia Garner won her third Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Ozark, fans were quick to suggest that Yellowjacket’s Christina Ricci was robbed of the category’s win.

Meanwhile, Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen was a pleasant surprise, scoring his first Emmy win as Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The British actor prevailed over co-stars Nicholas Braun and Kieran Culkin, The Morning Show’s Billy Crudup, and Squid Games’ Park Hae-soo.

“Ted Lasso” star Brett Goldstein has defended his Emmys tradition of getting censored by the NBC broadcast for dropping an F-bomb during his speech for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
“Last time I was here, I was told not to swear, and I did, and I’m sorry but it meant that the feed got cut back home in the U.K. so my family never got to hear me say this, so thank you for this second chance,” Goldstein began during Sunday’s Emmy Awards before listing his family members and, naturally, cursing.
“I f—ing love you, I really do,” Goldstein said, which got silenced by the broadcast, before adding quickly, “I’m so sorry, I’ll be better.”

David Lynch is a director who has always, in a way, been ahead of the curve. His vision throughout both his film and television projects is uncompromising, and even those that had received mixed reception during their release are often warmly regarded today (at least by Lynch fans).
Perhaps the most drastically re-evaluated Lynch film is "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me." The prequel film to his and Mark Frost's seminal series "Twin Peaks" was a critical and commercial flop upon release, with many criticizing its drastic tonal shift and bizarre imagery. What many people didn't realize at the time, however, is that "Fire Walk With Me" was perhaps the best example of Lynch's creative influences in action. The crumbling American Dream, the dissolution of the nuclear family, and the overall absurdity of societal pressures all play integral parts in this prequel.

When David Lynch's "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" debuted in theaters in 1992, audiences and critics were pretty unimpressed. The ABC series "Twin Peaks," created by Lynch and Mark Frost, was often pretty strange and occasionally a little scary, but it was also very funny. The film is close to humorless, with only a brief comedic scene with Lynch himself in the beginning, and then it's a harrowing nightmare of sexual violence, incest, drug abuse, and murder. "Fire Walk With Me" is a dirge for Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), who spent the duration of the series already dead.
"Twin Peaks" asked audiences to figure out who killed Laura Palmer, but "Fire Walk With Me" asked audiences to see who Laura Palmer really was. Instead of learning about her through the memories of those who knew her, the audience is given a chance to know her intimately during her final week alive.

David Lynch has made a lot of great movies, but "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me," might be his best. It's a prequel to his hit TV show "Twin Peaks," one that follows Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) around throughout the final week of her life. After two seasons of hearing about Laura in the past tense, this movie reminded us of something most murder mystery shows tend to lose sight of: that the victim was a real person with a full life, not just a mystery to be solved. "Fire Walk With Me" is a sad, terrifying, deeply emotional film, one that gives Laura a voice for one of the few times in the series.
Unfortunately, the movie was both a financial and critical disappointment at the time. "Twin Peaks" fans who wanted a resolution to the second season's massive cliffhanger were disappointed that the movie didn't resolve any of that.

Critics were lukewarm upon release but the resulting decades have been kinder to the unsettling prequel that takes a look at the real Laura Palmer
“I’ve already gone places. I kind of like to stay where I am.” The great Harry Dean Stanton tearfully recites these words to FBI agents Chet Desmond (Chris Isaak) and Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland) in David Lynch’s 1992 masterwork Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. Though this scene seemingly has nothing to do with Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), it’s a perfect summation of the film’s tragic protagonist. Someone attempting to find light in a nightmarish world. Unfairly lambasted by critics during its original release, Fire Walk with Me is a terrifying, tragic look into the last days of a young woman experiencing the worst kinds of abuse.

The period thriller tells the story of the campaign of resistance against the Nazi occupation in Jersey.
Vanessa Paradis and Nina Hoss are set to star in the English-language period thriller Trespassers, the third feature from French director Vanessa Filho, best known for Angel Face.
The film tells the true story of Lucy Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe – two surrealist artists, who worked under the pseudonyms Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. The women were stepsisters and lovers, and launched the campaign of resistance against the Nazi occupation of the island of Jersey – a self-governing dependency of the British crown – during the Second World War.

Lenny Von Dohlen, who played Harold Smith on the hit series “Twin Peaks,” died on Tuesday, his agent confirmed to Variety. He was 63.
His sister Catherine Von Dohlen first announced his death Thursday morning on Facebook. No cause of death was given. “The world lost a magnificent man on July 5. Brother Len was passionate about everything and everyone. He was always leading; whether it be riveting conversation, an artistic creation or a trip to new places. He loved a good laugh. He continues on his spiritual journey. Living life full in his memory,” she wrote.

The wonderful and strange world of "Twin Peaks" has captivated television and cinema audiences for decades, leaving a lasting impact on serialized storytelling in television long after its original run. Co-created by film director David Lynch and novelist Mark Frost, "Twin Peaks" was led by Kyle MacLachlan as Special Agent Dale Cooper, who investigated the murder of a teenage girl named Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). As Cooper soon discovered, Laura lived a double life, and the investigation was rife with secrets and dramatic developments. The town of Twin Peaks itself was full of quirky and memorable characters, and the show blended soap drama, comedy, and the...

The FBI officially closed the D.B. Cooper case in 2016, forty-five years after he hijacked a plane, extorted $200,000, and jumped somewhere between Seattle and Reno. It’s the only unsolved case of air piracy in the United States and the fact it remained open for so long was reason enough for the bureau to cut its losses and put resources dedicated to its numerous dead-ends elsewhere. Cooper would be in his eighties or nineties at this point anyway, if he’s even still alive—a long shot for some who don’t believe anyone could’ve survive the rough terrain he’d have needed to walk through in the dark upon a hypothetically safe parachute landing. So what would a concrete answer truly provide? Closure? Isn’t the mystery the appeal?

Updated with Ringo Starr reaction: Astrid Kirchherr, photographer and early friend of the Beatles whose avant-garde style helped transform the young band from ’50s-era greasers to moptop trend-setters, died Wednesday in her native Hamburg, Germany. She was 81.
The German newspaper Die Zeit reports that Kirchher died following a “short, serious illness,” with no additional details provided.
Beatles drummer Ringo Starr tweeted a tribute today, saying: “God bless Astrid a beautiful human being And she took great photos peace and love.”
Kirchherr, along with her friend Klaus Voormann, befriended the Beatles during the group’s early, pre-Beatlemania Hamburg club residencies, and the pair’s fashion sense — they were part of the city’s “Exi” (short for “existentialist”) youth subculture — quickly entranced original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe. Soon, the biker jackets and greased, Elvis-inspired pompadours so beloved by the teenage John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison were history, replaced with the style...

The third season of Twin Peaks was some of the greatest television I’ve ever seen. Arriving 26 years after season 2 wrapped up, David Lynch and Mark Frost’s TV comeback smashed all expectations, continuing the story started so long ago while taking us in some intense and crazy new directions. The season ended on an appropriately enigmatic tone as well, with Agent Dale Cooper apparently trapped in the past with an alternate version of Laura Palmer.
Since that third season won a ton of awards (Cahiers du cinema even named it as their “film of the year”), there’s been talk of a fourth run and now, star Kyle MacLachlan has said he’d drop everything to work on the show again. In an interview with ComicBook.com, he explained the following:
“I think, first and foremost, this is the Twin Peaks that David Lynch wanted to make and that makes me incredibly happy for him.

The world is about to learn much more about Hazel Drew, the 20-year-old whose death in 1908 inspired Laura Palmer’s demise on “Twin Peaks.”
Drew is the subject of an upcoming mulitmedia project from Metabook, “Blonde, Beautiful and Dead.” Metabook creative director Benjamin Alfonsi talked about it in the latest “Shoot This Now” podcast, which you can listen to on Apple or above or right here.
“Twin Peaks” is most often linked to David Lynch, but it was the show’s co-creator, Mark Frost, who felt a personal connection to Drew, Alfonsi explained.

“Twin Peaks: The Return” felt, for many like this generation’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It broke the rules of television and Lynch’s vision was so far out, it almost felt like a broadcast from another dimension. The mosaic of characters the legendary director presented to us was part of a greater whole, one that felt almost too impossible to describe.
As Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) finally found his way down the show’s never-ending rabbit hole of colliding cosmos, he did so by finding a way to redeem Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), even by saving her life, seemingly going back in time and changing the tragic events of 1989.

“Twin Peaks: The Return” should be a shoe-in for numerous Emmy nominations given it was one of 2017’s best reviewed pieces of entertainment, but David Lynch’s polarizing style means the show isn’t the lock it should be this year. IndieWire’s Emmy expert Ben Travers has the series listed as a major contender for nominations in races like Outstanding Limited Series, Actor in a Limited Series (Kyle MacLachlan), and Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), but every “Twin Peaks” fan knows three nominations won’t cut it — nor is anything a guarantee.
In this year’s acting races for limited series, Showtime is throwing its weight behind MacLachlan and Dern and launching campaigns for actors such as Naomi Watts and David Lynch, among others. However, “The Return” is filled with so many memorable actors giving some of the best performances of their careers that Emmy voters ought to look below...
