“Where is the hope?”
That was the question was posed last week at one of the world’s most prominent launch pads for nonfiction films in development — Hot Docs Pitch Forum — and it reflected the general mood in the room.
As 20 filmmaking teams pitched their projects to dozens of top decision-makers, funders, and broadcasters sitting around the long wooden table in the Gothic-designed Hart House at the University of Toronto, there was a particular excitement for new documentaries that were “fresh,” “optimistic” and “fun”—to use some of the words spoken publically over the two-day pitch-a-thon.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you could see those same powerbrokers struggling over what to do with still essential, but tough issue-driven films having to do with post-revolutionary countries in the Middle East or the global refugee crisis.

The Women’s March on Main hit Park City on a snowy Saturday morning, turning the first weekend of Sundance into a very different kind of must-attend event. Despite the frigid cold weather, turnout was high and the crowd remained energized during the march and hour-long parking lot rally, which spilled out around the surrounding hills and streets.
Despite the slow traffic — packed shuttles and lines of cars stretched down the ski town’s main thoroughfares and out of town as women and men flocked in from Salt Lake City and local environs — the mood was jovial, and at least one shuttle broke out into a chat of “this is what democracy looks like!” before even arriving at the rally.
Marchers included such Sundance Film Festival attendees as Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, carrying a Planned Parenthood sign and wearing “I’m with Meryl” stickers on her parka, John Legend, and...

Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.

Reviewers in the Us are just as sweet on Damon Gameau.s That Sugar Film as their Australian counterparts.
Samuel Goldwyn Films launched the Madman-produced documentary on 10 screens and on-demand last Friday.
Us critics favourably compared the doc to Morgan Spurlock.s Super Size Me and last year.s sugar-themed expose Fed Up from executive producers Katie Couric and Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth) and director Stephanie Soechtig.
The New York Times. Daniel M. Gold declared, .Like Super Size Me, Mr. Gameau keeps a team of doctors and nutritionists handy, and the health effects are alarming. Within three weeks, he starts to develop fatty liver disease, and by the end incurs early Type 2 diabetes and increased heart disease risks.
.Mr. Gameau.s breezy blend of computer imagery, musical numbers, sketches and offbeat field trips makes the nutrition lessons easy to digest.

It’s no secret that in the last couple decades the number of overweight children in the United States has grown at an alarming rate. The statistics are shocking. Not long ago, one in twenty kids may have had an issue with weight, but now, one in every five faces obesity and the long list of unpleasant consequences that come with it. With the rise of personal fitness and calorie cutting processed foods, how could this be? As the question ominously looms over the American public at large, famed television journalist Katie Couric and seasoned issue-doc director Stephanie Soechtig have teamed up, put together an all-star cast and crew of medical and political experts who aim to expose the ugly truths within the answer. Bolstered by the presence of producer Laurie David on board, Fed Up aims to be the food industry equivalent to what An Inconvenient Truth was to the environmental movement.

One of my favorite new films, Blue Ruin by director Jeremy Saulnier(Murder Party) is finally coming home to Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay and Radius TWC. Blue Ruin is a slow-burning, gritty, brutal, and realistic revenge film, about a man, who after experiencing a traumatic family tragedy, lets his despair destroy his life. Living the life of a bum, he learns that the person responsible for the tragic event that took away his life, is being released from prison. The character of Dwight, played by Macon Blair, that also appeared in Saulnier’s Murder Party, packs up what little shit he has, and makes his way to the prison where the release is happening, so he can find a way to get the revenge he feels that he is owed. If you like revenge movies, especially those that are executed perfectly, then Blue Ruin is a film you...

Food documentaries are among the most talked about and critically acclaimed of the genre -- especially when they blow the lid off of something we've always thought true or taken for granted. Now, another thought-provoking doc of that ilk joins the mix. "Fed Up," from director Stephanie Soechtig ("Tapped"), producer Laurie David ("An Inconvenient Truth"), and journalist Katie Couric, takes a hard look at America's growing obesity problem, revealing information that the food industry really doesn't want you to know.
In the spirit of documentaries like "Fed Up," which is in theaters now, we asked producer Laurie David to share her list of must-see food docs. "Food rules, and I will watch any doc that impacts my own personal knowledge of what I'm eating and feeding my kids," she tells us.
And with that, here are her top five food documentaries.

The latest documentary to tackle the tangle of American food politics, Fed Up focuses its lens on one specific aspect of the you-are-what-you-eat battle: childhood obesity rates. Directed by Stephanie Soechtig and produced by Katie Couric and Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth), the film follows four overweight teens to their doctor's appointments, sports practices, and home kitchens, in an attempt to answer the question of why these children can't seem to lose weight.

Ten years ago, Morgan Spurlock’s super-sized diet showed audiences just how drastically fast food could affect one’s physical, physiological and psychological well-being. Around the same time, Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation exposed an industry at the helm of a nation’s obesity epidemic. Now, in 2014, news anchor Katie Couric and An Inconvenient Truth producer Laurie David have served audiences another portion of healthy, thoughtful subject matter about the food we eat and what it is doing to us.
Fed Up is a sometimes effective, sometimes questionable doc that wants to figure out why a nation filled with low-calorie options and raised on exercise videos still has trouble losing weight. The results are hardly revelatory, but that does not mean Stephanie Soechtig’s film is worthless viewing, especially for students and families. Even if there are oversights throughout, the doc raises some important concerns.

Stephanie Soechtig’s latest film had its premiere earlier this year in Park City where, amidst a host of other issue driven documentaries in the Sundance Us Documentary Competition, it seemed to slide by without much fanfare. But make no mistake, Fed Up is a virtuous film that bears its heart, shows its teeth and makes its case that American politics and corporate greed has led to an epidemic of obesity with remarkable style and a wealth of credibility. While her debut, Tapped, incisively outlined the devastating global effects of the bottled water industry, here she takes on an even greater behemoth – the American processed food industry.

Health-related documentaries have grown in popularity since the success of Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me in 2004. However, while non-fiction films have tackled fast food, corporate farming and ways to fight disease, few of them interact with a growing concern in the United States and beyond: how the food we eat is making us sick and fat. Fed Up, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is a call to get children and their parents to eat healthier – a goal that is harder to reach since so many foods perceived to be ‘healthy’ are full of artificial sugars and ingredients that just make you want to eat more.

I think that we are all well aware of how much Hollywood loves a good sequel, but I honestly didn’t see this one coming. Documentaries usually don’t require a second look, but 2006′s climate-change doc An Inconvenient Truth is an exception. Despite making a splash upon release (grossing $50 million, winning two Oscars, and helping Al Gore win a Nobel Peace Prize), the movie has had little effect on how the public views global warming. The issue of climate change is still unresolved and many refuse to believe that the problem even exists. According to producer Lawrence Bender, that’s exactly why a sequel is necessary.
THR recently spoke to Bender about the idea of a sequel and according to him, they’ve had conversations about a follow-up but want to be sure that it will have an impact.
“At the time [of the first film], we hoped to provoke a global conversation about climate change.

In 2006, armed with a projector and a pointer, Al Gore elevated the issues of climate change to a global audience with “An Inconvenient Truth,” earning the Nobel Peace Prize himself in 2007, and the film taking in close to $50 million at the box office. Naturally, those results would cry out for an immediate follow-up—but as talks of a sequel have emerged, it seems approach is the key factor for all involved in actually making it happen. "We have had conversations," producer Lawrence Bender told THR recently about getting the “Inconvenient” team back together, which included Gore, Scott Z. Burns, Davis Guggenheim, and many others. "We've met; we've discussed. If we are going to make a movie, we want it to have an impact." Environmental activist Laurie David supported Bender’s opinions, and argued that the time for that widespread impact is very soon. "Everything in that movie has come to pass.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, producer Lawrence Bender revealed that he's working on a sequel to the Oscar-winning environmental documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," which grossed $50 million worldwide and helped former Vice President Al Gore win the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and eventually become a billionaire. "We have had conversations. We've met; we've discussed. If we are going to make a movie, we want it to have an impact," said Bender, adding that in the years following the documentary the fossil-fuel industry has launched a misinformation campaign. "They did a really good job of pushing back and confusing people. Some people actually believe global warming doesn't exist." Environmental activists are eager to see the sequel happen. "God, do we need one," said environmentalist Laurie David. "Everything in that movie has come to pass. At the time we did the movie, there was Hurricane Katrina; now we have extreme weather events every other week.
