On Wednesday, “Fixing the War,” about news fixers in Ukraine, won the Special Eurimages Co-production Development Award at Swiss documentary festival Visions du Réel. It was one of 15 projects selected in this year’s edition of VdR-Pitching, the event’s international co-production and financing platform. Variety accompanied the team as they pitched to potential partners.
The film’s producers Gary Lennon of Plainsong Films and Oleksandra Kravchenko of Moon Man were in Nyon to pitch the film, which is directed by Clare Stronge and Vadym Ikov. “Fixing the War” was pitched as the first film to show the vital role of local field producers, otherwise known as “fixers” in the journalism community – locals hired to help a journalist working in a foreign country navigate everything from logistics to translations or safety issues.
The pair started with a 12-minute pitch to a room full of industry professionals, during which they outlined...

I Dream In Photos Photo: Glasgow Film Festival
Screened at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival, Ollie Aslin and Gary Lennon’s documentary I Dream In Photos is a portrait of photojournalist Cathal McNaughton, who won a pultizer Prize for his work and then found his life falling apart because suddenly India, where he had been based, knew who he was and was hesitant to let him back in. Retreating to Ireland, he was suddenly hit by the traumatising effect of the things he’d seen among some of the world’s most desperate people. Unbeknownst to Ollie and Gary, working on the film would give him what he needed to start processing this and getting back on his feet.
The filmmakers and I had met before, when their documentary Castro’s Spies screened in Glasgow – something Gary, joining me alone on this occasion, remembers fondly
“It was brilliant,” he recalls.

With Starz set to become a pure play standalone public company by year end, CEO Jeff Hirsch is out talking up its strong points and how it competes in a crowded streaming landscape — price increases, bundling, and most importantly, he said, containing content costs with a slate of new shows in development as later season series get costly.
“When seasons go from one to two to three to four [seasons], three to four is where the cost really pops because most of the actors get bigger raises, and you have to really manage that. So, you have to have in your portfolio of development shows that can actually replace shows as they get into later seasons,” he said at a Deutsche Bank media conference today, providing one of the most blunt assessments of a practice introduced by Netflix and embraced by other streamers where shows produced under the Cost Plus model...

Euphoria executive producer Ron Leshem flew into Spain this week and recalled how Hollywood had initially turned down the HBO hit over concerns about teenage lead characters.
In a panel at Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria (Ipi) today focused on content for Gen Z, Leshem said both Euphoria and the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things hit the same roadblock, as networks initially fretted over the idea of teenagers leading a series that wasn’t specifically a teen drama.

But who? Leading up to the pivotal episode, which aired on Sept. 29, fans saw Claudia Flynn (Lili Simmons) plot with her brother Vic (Shane Harper) to stage a family coup taking down their father Walter (Tommy Flanagan) and take over their namesake notorious drug ring.

After much anticipation, "Power Book IV: Force" is finally returning for season two this fall, and according to series star Joseph Sikora, it'll be a real treat for "Power" fans who've been following the franchise since the very beginning. "We're going back to the roots of 'Power,'" he reveals to Popsugar. "We're hitting the streets hard, we're figuring out where things exist in Chicago in real time. I think that the audience is going to have a fun time discovering places."
In addition to more explosive action, Sikora teases that season two "feels very organic," crediting showrunner Gary Lennon (who served as an executive producer on "Power") for a "tremendous job of expanding our world and relating how real Chicago, specifically how Latino culture here in Chicago, would be; how it presents it very truthfully and expands our South Side and North Side gangs."

Showtime is exploring an infamous teenage couple who were convicted of murdering 11 people in the 1950s in the network’s latest docuseries. The 12th Victim is a four-part docuseries following the crimes of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate.
Told through a stylistic blend of archival and recreated footage and countless film and television series inspired by the killings, the series reexamines Fugate’s guilty verdict, who was 14 years old at the time of the killings, through a modern lens, questioning the media and judicial system’s treatment of her despite her self-proclaimed innocence.
On Tuesday, Showtime released a trailer for the series and announced it will debut on February 17.

“Power never dies.” That was the tagline (and obligatory hashtag) used back in early 2020 to tease an ambitious brand expansion of Starz’s popular drug-trade drama, “Power.” As the flagship series wound down, the sizzle trailer insisted that while the show’s antihero protagonist — played by Omari Hardwick — might have drawn his last breath, there was plenty of oxygen left in the franchise. It seemed almost fanciful at the time — four spin-offs announced at once?!? — but three successful shows launched within two years’ time goes beyond proof of concept. Not only is “Power” alive and well, its heart rate is robust.
February saw the premiere of “Power Book IV: Force,” the franchise’s third extension, focused on Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), one of the “Power” universe’s many virtuosic cocaine dealers. “Force” set an all-time viewership record for Starz, tallying 3.3 million cross-platform viewers for its premiere. Starz has handed a second season order to Power Book IV: Force.
The renewal announcement Wednesday follows strong ratings for the February 6 debut of the third spinoff in the Power franchise, which notched the most-watched series premiere in Starz history, with 3.3 million multiplatform views in the U.S. alone.
Power Book IV: Force will have a new showrunner in Season 2. Gary Lennon is taking over as showrunner/executive producer for series creator Robert Munic, who will not be involved with the new season. This is a reunion of sorts for Force leading man Joseph Sikora and Lennon as the latter was the co-showrunner on the original Power for its sixth and final season in 2019-2020.
The series, which hails from Courtney Kemp and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Lionsgate Television, centers around Tommy Egan, played by Sikora, after he cuts ties and puts New York in his rearview mirror for good.

Less than a week after Euphoria’s dramatic Season 2 finale, HBO is addressing claims about a toxic and unsafe workplace environment on the set of the Zendaya-led drama.
Earlier in February The Daily Beast published a report that detailed the inner workings of Euphoria season 2, including alleged 15 to 17 work days, “hellish” night shoots and more. The Daily Beast also reported that background actors made complaints to SAG-AFTRA over failure “to provide them meals on time and refusing to let people use the bathroom,” among other allegations of a toxic production.”
The premium network shared the following statement in response to the allegations of SAG-AFTRA violations:
“The well-being of cast and crew on our productions is always a top priority. The production was in full compliance with all safety guidelines and guild protocols. It’s not uncommon for drama series to have complex shoots, and Covid protocols add an additional layer.
