FX is stepping into the standup comedy ring, with comedy specials from Kate Berlant and Byron Bowers to premiere exclusively on Hulu on Sept. 15, the network announced.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Talk about a warm welcome. Brian d’Arcy James tells me that Steven Spielberg surprised him during his first day of shooting on the much-buzzed-about “West Side Story” remake. “Steven Spielberg has this fantastic tradition of stopping after the first shot that you’re in, and basically announcing and applauding anybody who has entered into the making of the movie,” says James, who plays Sgt. He says, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Brian d’Arcy James is in the movie!’ And then he went on and did that for everyone else too.”

Teri Hatcher is getting serious about comedy.
The actor is no stranger to delivering jokes or being put in humorous situations on-screen, from her iconic guest star appearance on “Seinfeld” to eight seasons of often outlandish moments on “Desperate Housewives.” For the last few years she has been balancing television gigs with performing stand-up sets on stage, and now the two are mixing in the Showtime special “Even More Funny Women of a Certain Age.”
“I started writing and performing my first versions of what I would call funny stories maybe five years ago. I was doing that with some really great comedic writers; we would do shows that were for charity in front of audiences of 300 or 400 people. That was kind of the beginning of me looking at just performing a funny story,” Hatcher tells Variety.

Fans of Amy Schumer might be experiencing deja vu now that the comedian is denying accusations that she steals jokes, because she defended herself against similar claims three months ago. Stand-up comics Wendy Liebman, Kathleen Madigan and Tammy Pescatelli recently took to Twitter to complain that Schumer uses other comedians’ jokes in her own act. Schumer responded that she would take a polygraph test to prove that she would never intentionally steal a joke. However, in October, a TMZ crew approached Schumer outside an airport and asked about accusations that she lifted material from late comedian Patrice O’Neal. Back then,...

After a recent video surfaced comparing Amy Schumer's material to other comedians' work, Schumer went on Jim Norton's SiriusXM Radio show today to deny any allegations of joke theft. "I wanted to come and talk to you about [these accusations] and clear my name, because I would never ever do that and I never have," the comedian said, adding that she is "literally going to take a polygraph test and put it on my show this season."The video collects allegations — some of which surfaced this weekend, others older — that Schumer copied material from Patrice O'Neal, Tammy Pescatelli, Kathleen Madigan, and Wendy Liebman. Talking to Norton, Schumer said that she had not seen any of their jokes before she performed her own and that any similarities were a result of parallel thinking, not plagiarism. She previously addressed similarities between O'Neal's punchline and a line from her stand-up special on Twitter last fall.

Amy Schumer is sticking up for herself. The Trainwreck star denied allegations of joke theft after a video was released comparing her material to other comedians' gags. Schumer, 34, vehemently refuted the claims on Twitter Wednesday, and also defended herself during an appearance on the Jim Norton Advice Show on Sirius Xm's Opie Radio. "On my life, I have never and would never steal a joke," the star tweeted. The video alleged that Schumer stole jokes from Kathleen Madigan, Wendy Liebman, Tammy Pescatelli, and the late Patrice O'Neal. On my life, I have never and would never steal a joke.— Amy Schumer...

Welcome to Outrage Watch, HitFix's semi-regular rundown of entertainment-related kerfuffles. Not anxious enough already? Get your fix of righteous indignation below, and stay posted for outrage updates throughout the week. Update (1/21/16 2:58 Pm Est): Tammy Pescatelli called in to "Opie" Hughes and Jim Norton's SiriusXM radio show Thursday to respond to the controversy: "It is probably parallel thinking. That does happen...I probably should have just stayed out of it and kept my mouth shut," said Pescatelli in part. "I shouldn't have accused somebody. It did seem that way, that it was a lift." You can hear Pescatelli's full appearance below: In today's edition of comics berating other comics, 2015 "It" girl Amy Schumer has been accused of joke-stealing on Twitter by three prominent stand-ups: Kathleen Madigan, Tammy Pescatelli and Wendy Liebman (though the latter has since provided less-damning context to her claim that Schumer "[did] 1 of my best jokes on her HBO special.

Amy Schumer is setting the record straight. "I'm being accused of stealing jokes and I wanted to come and talk to you about it and clear my name," she told fellow comedian Jim Norton on his SiriusXM advice show Wednesday. This week, three comedians — Wendy Liebman, Kathleen Madigan and Tammy Pescatelli — took to Twitter to discuss alleged similarities between their jokes and ones that Schumer has used in her Comedy Central series, Inside Amy Schumer, and movie, Trainwreck. The thread was quickly deleted off social media, but the conversation had drawn enough heat that Schumer wanted to

Amy Schumer is taking on her haters one by one this week, or so it seems. The Trainwreck star's latest mission is to slam the recent allegations that she's stolen jokes from three separate comedians. The Golden Globe nominee cleared the air via Twitter earlier this afternoon with the following to-the-point statement: "On my life, I have never and would never steal a joke." Well then! Comedians Wendy Liebman, Tammy Pescatelli and Kathleen Madigan took part in a Twitter conversation (which has now been deleted) claiming that Schumer had used jokes from their acts. Earlier this week, the 34-year-old actress slammed a critic on Twitter, after the self-proclaimed fan snapped a...

After "America's Got Talent" crowned the Top 12 of Season 9 last week, a scandal erupted within the "Agt" community over the many popular performers who were cruelly cut -- like Smoothini and Wendy Liebman -- in favor of several mediocre acts that many fans believe shouldn't be there. Based on Gold Derby's exclusive racetrack odds, the following four acts don't deserve to be in the finals. Do you agree or disagree with these overall findings? Be sure to sound off in the comments section below. -Break- At 100/1 odds, Mara Justine by far has the worst odds to win the season according to your predictions. This 12-year-old singer has coasted by so far on her shy cuteness, but it'll be a major shocker if she's voted through next week, especially with such impressive competition from the other singers. Mike Super was a wild card act brought back into the competition by judge Howie Mandel,...

Wendy Liebman is my favorite standup comedian. She has been ever since I saw her first HBO special, and then her first Comedy Central special, and then her appearances on "Letterman" and "The Larry Sanders Show," and even her cameos as a star on the '90s "Hollywood Squares" with Whoopi Goldberg. She also had a Showtime special a couple years ago called "Taller on TV," and it's clear her style hasn't changed and shouldn't change: Liebman sticks to subliminal punchlines delivered with the wide smile of a kindergarten teacher. My favorite Liebman one-liner: "I'm going to my 30-year preschool reunion and I'm really nervous... because I've put on like a hundred pounds." Her style allows her to be both pithy and wicked, and she even won the American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup of 1997. That's why it was so weird to see her audition for "America's Got Talent" last night.

Dumb Dora was so dumb that she didn’t realize this week marks the 40th anniversary of Match Game‘s ’70s incarnation. That’s right: The game show that brought you Gene Rayburn’s Neanderthal posture, that funky think music, and the exploits of Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Richard Dawson and many more is 40 years old. It’s an irreplaceable treasure. There is no show like it, and I’m including other celebrity-dappled games like Hollywood Squares and Tattletales in that estimation.
Let’s celebrate with an old-fashioned countdown: the 10 best celebrities in Match Game
10. Gary Burghoff
Always the most cherished understudy in the ever-important Top Right chair, Burghoff was pleasant and game without being histrionic. Always on my Radar.
9. Elaine Joyce
Once and for all, the only Bottom Left-seated celebrity who could be both the ditzy blonde and a self-aware, naughty player too. She married Neil Simon, guys.

Zap2it: How did you start stand-up?
Nikki Glaser: I started at 18 or 19 and have been doing it ever since. I did theater in high school and loved it. I didn't have a passion for [stand-up], and I stumbled upon it. And when I went away to college, people told me I was funny and should start stand-up. I Googled it. I grew up watching Leno and Conan and Letterman, but I didn't really have an affinity for stand-up, mainly because I did not see many females doing it. Then I saw Sarah Silverman and Wendy Liebman, and I thought, "Oh my God, this is what I need to be doing."
Zap2it: Where did you go to college, and what did you study?
Nikki Glaser: I was at University of Colorado-Boulder, then transferred to University of Kansas and studied English because I knew I wanted to do stand-up.

Deadpan delivery and dry wit make this stand-up comic stand out from the rest. Watch as Wendy Liebman delivers a hilarious routine about married life, a memorable trip to Alaska and more.

"The idea was comedy for women, but it's not like a 'Cathy' cartoon; it's way hipper."
That's how "The Office" star Kate Flannery describes her new all-female stand-up show, "StandUp In Stilettos," coming to the TV Guide Network this month. The show's 12 episodes will feature 36 women, three per episode, performing comedy in front of a live audience. Flannery hopes the easily digestible segments will expose the Guide's browsers to quality comedy of the female variety.
"It's a nice intro for people who might be closed-minded about women in comedy," Flannery said in an interview. "I cannot believe that in all the years that there have been female stand-ups, there has never been a show just for them. The girls can play just as hard as the boys, so I think it's long overdue."
And based on the first (and as of writing, only) comment on the show's preview video on YouTube,...

Everett Susie Essman on the set of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”

I flew home for Thanksgiving today and after all the mess and fuss about the new security measures in the news, around the interwebs, and on Pajiba lately I was expecting the worst. I had even planned to get to the airport a full two hours before my boarding time so I could make sure I had enough time to get through the disaster that I was sure security would be what with the controversial screenings and holiday coming up. Then I accidentally turned my alarm off while trying to hit the snooze button, so was even more worried and you know what? I just had to walk through a metal detector. No scanner (which I've had to go through before several times) no pat down, no nothing. was almost disappointed. So, I hope that those of you traveling this week have just as easy a time getting where you're going.

TORONTO -- Martin Short, Jason Alexander and Jimmy Fallon will host their own galas at the second annual Just for Laughs Toronto Festival in July, organizers said Tuesday.
Veteran American ventriloquist Jeff Dunham will also perform at Toronto's Massey Hall.
Other Just for Laughs highlights include comic showcases including the Asian Invasion, hosted by Canadian stand-up Sugar Sammy and to feature Jo Koy, and the Italian-themed Wiseguys show, headlined by the Doo-Wops, Joey Kola and Dom Irrera.
Just for Laughs COO Bruce Hills said the Toronto edition will remain tailored for a consumer market, unlike the industry-oriented Montreal run July 10-20 that attracts L.A. talent scouts and executives.
For its sophomore run, Just for Laughs Toronto will also for the first time fill local comedy clubs. The Headliners series at Yuk Yuk's will showcase Wendy Liebman, Kevin Hart, Gerry Dee, Al Madrigal, Australian comic Adam Hills, Jeff Ross and Elon Gold. The Absolute Comedy club will host a Canadian comic showcase, hosted by Debra DiGiovanni, while Second City will host "The Sketch Show", headlined by Craig Robinson.
