The 2023 Tony Awards just honored a fresh group of incredible talents. Trophies were handed out at the United Palace Theater in NYC on June 11. This year's big winners include "Killing Eve" star Jodie Comer for her role in "Prima Facie," the play "Leopoldstadt," and the musical "Kimberly Akimbo."
"Shucked" star Alex Newell and "Some Like It Hot" star J. Harrison Ghee also made history as they became the award show's first openly nonbinary acting winners. The Tony Awards do not have gender-neutral acting categories. Newell, an alum of "The Glee Project," took home the award for featured actor in a musical. Ghee also won in their category, best actor in a musical.
The annual theater award ceremony was hosted by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, who is emceeing without a script amid the 2023 writers strike.

Plenty of attention is dedicated to the Best Musical race during Tony Awards season, but how confident are you in predicting the design categories? These four races consistently yield surprise winners each year. Those surprises have the potential to completely derail your score in our Tony prediction contest, even if you manage to guess all of the acting winners correctly.
So let’s take a deep dive into the tough below-the-line musical categories that you’ll need to ace in order to score top marks on your 2023 Tony Awards predictions.
Scenic Design
There’s plenty of gorgeous scenic work in this category, but we can probably count out three contenders from the ultimate win. 59 Productions’ video design for “Camelot” is stunning, but Michael Yeargan’s minimal use of physical sets will keep it out of the running. Mimi Lien plopped “Sweeney Todd” in a gargantuan, industrial-themed pit, but some “Sweeney...

The power of "Sweeney Todd" lies in its ability to seduce its audience to stare (and chortle) at the ingenuity of murderous cannibalism. Since its 1979 opening on Broadway (starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury), the darkly comic "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street" has been a general favorite of Stephen Sondheim's musicals (depending on who you ask). It exists at the intersection of traditional musical theatre and operetta, permitting a flexible theatricality from the small-scale (John Doyle's 2005 version and the 2017 Barrow Street immersive pie shop staging) to the grandiose opera stage. In the hands of "Hamilton" director Thomas Kail, "Sweeney Todd" stays true to its theatrical technicalities on the Broadway stage for the most part.
Inspired by the 1840s penny dreadful serial and Christopher Bond's 1973 stage retelling, Hugh Wheeler's book deals with injustice in 19th-century London. "Sweeney Todd" follows the eponymous barber who returns...

First “Company,” then “Into the Woods,” and now the demon barber of Fleet Street. In the year or so since legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s death, Broadway has seen an increasing number of revivals of his works. The trend continued on March 26 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with the opening of a new production of his masterpiece, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Tony nominee and internationally-renowned vocalist Josh Groban plays the menacing title role as the wronged barber out for revenge, starring opposite Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett, the schemer who devises baking Todd’s victims into meat pies in an austere nineteenth-century London.
Led by Tony-winning “Hamilton” director Thomas Kail, the ensemble also boasts Tony winner Ruthie Ann Miles (“The King and I”), Jordan Fisher, Gaten Matarazzo, and many others amongst its 25 players. Kail has also enlisted three-time Tony winner Alex Lacamoire as music supervisor...

Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will return to Broadway this spring in a revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
The revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical will be helmed by Hamilton director Thomas Kail and produced by Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller. Sweeney Todd will play the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, with previews set to begin on February 26, 2023 ahead of a March 26 opening night.
The musical, which features a score by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, originally premiered on Broadway in 1979 and was last revived on Broadway in 2005, in a production that starred Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris and called on its actors to play instruments. This revival will bring back a 26-person orchestra for the first time since the original production, with Alex Lacamoire as music supervisor.

Theater-makers Mimi Lien, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Basil Twist were among the 24 2015 MacArthur Fellowship, or “genius grant,” recipients announced Sept. 29, by the MacArthur Foundation. Each of these exemplary talents is due to receive a “no-strings-attached” $625,000 grant to continue creating and showcasing their work. Tony winner Miranda has been enrapturing sold-out audiences of late with the premiere of his hit Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” in which he stars; in addition, he wrote the book, music, and lyrics. As he did with 2008’s Tony-winning “In The Heights,” Miranda expands the Broadway genre, telling the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and infusing it with the American immigrant narrative—mixing in hip-hop, R&B, jazz, blues, and classic showtune-style songs for good measure. Puppeteer Basil Twist is an already established name in the arts, known for his breathtaking underwater puppet show, 1998’s “Symphonie Fantastique.” His work can next be seen alongside legendary downtown performers Julie Atlas Muz...

To find out where the musical is going these days, you may have to follow it into a tent. Not Pippin’s big top on Broadway but the one nestled beneath the High Line at West 13th Street, where Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, Dave Malloy’s enthralling take on Tolstoy, is playing. Actually, there’s some confusion about the setting: The tent, once you enter it, turns into a Russian supper club called Kazino, kitted out gorgeously by the designer Mimi Lien in miles of red velvet hung with framed czarist portraits. A light Russian dinner (including borscht, pierogies, vodka, and what unfortunately tasted one night like vintage black bread) is included with your $125 ticket. But the show presented right in the midst of 199 patrons at tables and bars has little to do with bread or circuses. Rather, it describes itself in its lyrics as both a...

Leaving a play with the sense that you need a minute to walk off the weight of its strength is a rare and wonderful sensation. It means that the work has hit you, that its words have somehow found their way through the cracks of the protective exterior we all wear to get through the day and reached the vulnerable core where we are still capable of change. This is the place where good plays are meant to take hold, and The Whale, currently running at Playwrights Horizons, is one of these extraordinary plays. Plunging into a depth of unconventional characters adrift in a sea of uncovered territory, playwright Samuel D. All Hands (at the Incubator Arts Project through March 31)Hoi Polloi (the hip interdisciplinary troupe behind last year's Three Pianos) returns with a bizarre seriocomic rite: All Hands, a bemused, slightly spooky (but never snide or arch) look at secret societies and the human hunger for inclusion, conceived by Hp founder Alec Duffy and written by Robert Quillen Camp. The stuffy Incubator Arts Project space (former home of Richard Foreman's Ontological-Hysteric Theater) has been transformed by scenic artist Mimi Lien to suggest a Masonic lodge: pews in long, facing galleries with a gauntlet down the middle. Here, an unnamed organization — an ad hoc amalgam of Shrinerism and AA — conducts its half-huggy, half-abusive rituals, recruits and initiates new members (all called "Henry"), and, occasionally, listens to its members use the bathroom via hidden microphones. No single character dominates and no single story emerges — it's all about the group...
