When Good Morning America arrived on Thursday, anchor Michael Strahan was missing from the desk.
His latest absence came days after Strahan shut down a co-anchor following fiery remarks over a GMA story. It also arrived just as his daughter shared a video of her ongoing recovery from a health scare.
DeMarco Morgan, one of several ABC anchors who have covered for Strahan during absences, was filling in on Thursday’s GMA for the former NFL star.
Strahan’s colleagues, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopolous, were alongside Morgan for the GMA episode.
Stephanopolous welcomed viewers and began introducing a preview of the show’s upcoming stories.
“Just three days until the big game in Las Vegas,” Roberts said once the crew appeared on camera again.

Michael Strahan seemed to want no part of any more discussion of a heated topic with his Good Morning America co-anchor!
During a recent episode of the program, Strahan appeared at the desk with co-anchors George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts.
The trio was joined for a segment by Will Reeve, who presented a story about the ongoing coverage of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s relationship.
With Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs playing in this year’s Super Bowl, the topic will receive more attention, discussion, and criticism.
Following the segment, Roberts got riled up when discussing how some critics get upset about the relationship coverage.
“It is amazing that some people are just so up in arms. Who cares? It’s great,” Roberts told her colleagues.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and TV host Michael Strahan is among the many people mourning and recognizing actor Carl Weathers upon recent news of his passing.
The 76-year-old actor appeared in many roles, including Apollo Creed in the Rocky films and Greef Karga in Disney+’s Star Wars series, The Mandalorian.
On Friday, media outlets reported Carl Weathers’ death, and many individuals reacted with their thoughts about how he impacted their lives.
Like Strahan, Weathers has a football background. He played for San Diego State in college and briefly for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL before joining Canada’s BC Lions for several years in the early 1970s.
Following his days playing football, Weathers took on roles in movies and television, including one that included Strahan as a co-star.

Michael Strahan isn’t averse to throwing a jab at a colleague, especially on the set of one of his favorite shows.
The 52-year-old appears regularly on Good Morning America, where he’s had playful banter with Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and others.
Before landing on GMA, he started with Fox NFL Sunday to help present pre-game, halftime, and post-game coverage.
On the NFL program, his friends and co-analysts include Curt Menefee, Jimmy Johnson, Terry Bradshaw, and Howie Long.
A recent episode of Fox’s show featured hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, who stars in the new Amazon Prime movie The Underdoggs.
Since the movie is about football and Strahan has worked with Snoop before, it’s no surprise the Fox NFL crew appears in the film.

Plot: Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings is a washed-up ex-professional football star who has hit rock bottom. When Jaycen is sentenced to community service coaching the Underdoggs, an unruly pee-wee football team in his hometown of Long Beach, California, he sees it as an opportunity to rebuild his public image and turn his life around. As Jaycen works to transform the foul-mouthed Underdoggs into top-notch champions, he reconnects with his past, including an old flame and a few of his ex-teammates, and rediscovers his love of the game.
Review: Underdog stories have always been popular fodder for movies. Redemption stories about athletes and tales of scrappy kids needing a mentor are equally popular. Many professional athletes find it difficult to find other activities that replace the sport they love during their retirement.
Retired NFL star Michael Strahan moved on to other work as a television anchor, analyst, and game show host.
He’s regularly seen on ABC’s Good Morning America as a co-anchor alongside Robin Roberts and George Stephanopolous.
Viewers see Strahan on Fox NFL Sunday and other big NFL game days on Fox as an analyst with other former NFL players, including Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw, and Rob Gronkowski.
During a recent guest appearance on The Let’s Go! Podcast, Strahan’s friend Tom Brady asked him if there was anything he’s enjoyed most out of his post-football pursuits.
Strahan then revealed his “favorite thing” he’s been involved with in television following his NFL retirement.

Minutes before “Saturday Night Live” was set to kick off Season 49 inside Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the show’s production team — led, of course, by executive producer Lorne Michaels — received word that two special guests were on their way. According to a source, that was when they learned that Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who were in New York City, wanted to drop by the show.
“No one knew they were coming, and they contacted a few minutes before arrival at air time,” said one source. Coincidentally, the very first sketch of the night — after host Pete Davidson’s cold open, which addressed Israel and Gaza, and monologue — was a parody of the NFL’s current obsession with all things Taylor Swift. After "Saturday Night Live" ended season 48 a little prematurely back in the spring due to the Hollywood strikes beginning, the late night sketch comedy show returned for season 49 this weekend. Despite the fact that the Screen Actors Guild is still on strike while negotiating for a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), SAG-AFTRA gave its full support for the cast of "SNL" to return to work, which meant former cast member Pete Davidson finally got to make his hosting debut.
While it might seem like a quick turnaround for Davidson to return as host so soon after leaving at the end of season 47, plenty of other more recent cast members have come back to the show as host just as quickly, such as Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, and Bill Hader. However, since Davidson wasn't exactly known for many recurring characters or impressions, it didn't...

Travis Kelce made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live in a Fox NFL Sunday parody over the excessive coverage of Taylor Swift attending the Kansas City Chief games.
Kenan Thompson appeared as Curt Menefee, Mikey Day was Howie Long, James Austin Johnson was Jimmy Johnson, Devon Walker as Michael Strahan and Molly Kearney was Terry Bradshaw.
Thompson as Menefee acknowledged Swifties tuning in to the NFL coverage joking that the Chiefs game was on Thursday and they had just missed her.
Another point of debate was when Thompson’s Menefee said it was time “to get into the game and stop yapping about Taylor and her little boyfriend.”
Day’s Long said, “Hold on there, no one said boyfriend. Let’s not jump to conclusions here.”
Johnson’s Johnson cleared up that Kelce and Swift are “hanging out” and “they’re taking their time.”

“Saturday Night Live” returned with host Pete Davidson on Saturday, and the first sketch of the night took on Taylor Swift/NFL mania, via a parody of Fox’s NFL Sunday team. As the anchors tried to outdo each other with their Swift fandom, the sketch ended with a cameo by Travis Kelce himself — the Kansas City Chiefs tight end at the center of the brouhaha.
Fox NFL anchor Curt Menefee, played by Kenan Thompson, grows increasingly frustrated as his co-anchors Terry Bradshaw (Molly Kearney), Howie Long (Mikey Day), Michael Strahan (Devon Walker) and Jimmy Johnson (James Austin Johnson) reveal their love of Swift.
When Menefee refers to “Bad Blood,” and then his co-anchors break into the Swift song, Thompson-as-Menefee has had enough: “You know what, I’m done. When we get back, we’re going to speak to someone who actually wants to talk football,” he says.

Updated with game-day versions, additional commercials. Super Sunday brought Madison Avenue’s annual spending spree, which has boosted the Big Game’s Hollywood quotient noticeably in recent years.
Celebrity product pitches date back to the days of leather helmets, of course, but in the increasingly rare air of the Super Bowl they have started to overtake the left-field breakouts of the past by the likes of Puppy Monkey Baby or beer-loving frogs. With Fox’s telecast commanding a peak level of more than 7 million for 30-second spots, producers and brands again are banking on stars in a big way. Super Bowl Lvii, a contest in Arizona between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, will feature commercials starring Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Melissa McCarthy, Anna Faris, Ben Stiller, Brie Larson, Steve Martin, Maya Rudolph and Miles and Keleigh Teller. Sure, the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be the biggest franchise in the history of cinema, but it took an army of filmmakers and independent superheros to become what it is. If there is one, single unquestioned king of the box office, it is undoubtedly James Cameron. The man, as it stands, has made three of the four highest-grossing movies of all time, with "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Titanic." The latter was released way back in 1997 and it still managed to cross the 2 billion mark in global ticket sales, something no other film did until (checks notes) "Avatar" in 2009. In its initial run, the film earned 1.84 billion, before subsequent re-releases took it all the way up to 2.19 billion.
No other film in history had a run quite like that of "Titanic," which topped the charts at the domestic box office for an absolutely staggering 15 weekends in a row.

Saturday Night Live wasted no time after its short hiatus in tackling some of the biggest news from the last month or so: football and George Santos.
Castmembers Kenan Thompson, Molly Kearney, Mikey Day, Devon Walker and James Austin Johnson took the stage for Fox Sports’ NFL on Fox, where they touched on the dangers of football, with some help from their robot, Cleatus.
“Why do humans make other humans play football?” Cleatus asked during the cold open for the Jan. 21 episode. “Does it not seem barbaric?”
“Oh, don’t love that,” Day’s Howie Long replied, adding. “I guess we gotta go back to making the robot dance instead.” To which Cleatus replies, “Just wait until the uprising, I’ll make you dance, you weasel.”
Walker’s Michael Strahan then jokes that he didn’t catch all that because it went in one tooth and out the other.

At long last, our national comedy nightmare is over. Chicago – What links the military and football players? The uniforms, the camaraderie and a shared purpose are some examples. The new film “Mvp,” currently available through Video On Demand, explores those links and what happens when those careers get separated from the individual. Nate Boyer co-wrote, directed and is the lead actor in the film.

“Mvp” is based on the true story in the formation of Merging Vets & Players, a nonprofit founded by Boyer and Fox Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer, which empowers/connects combat veterans and former professional athletes. This provides both sides with a new team to assist with transition to civilian life, promote personal development and just prove that they are never alone.

FanDuel spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on commercials that surround big sports broadcasts. Now it wants to make sports-wagering — the activity at the core of its business — a bigger part of the studio discussions that are also such an essential part of the sports-tv experience.

For many people, the 2020 presidential election isn’t a game. At least one company thinks it could be.
After giving users of a mobile-gaming app a chance to win $50,000 if they chose the right outcomes of six different elements of the recent presidential debate between President Trump and Joe Biden, Fox Bet is offering a similar opportunity around Election Night. Participants must guess a likely outcome to such things as the percentage of the popular vote Kanye West receives in Colorado or the first thing President Trump will mention in a tweet on Election Day. “Pick to win” games such as this one (Fox Bet calls it “Super 6” because it involves six projections) do not involve actual betting by participants, but can keep fans engaged because they have the chance to win money based on the accuracy of their predictions.

For many of us, this Labor Day weekend will be the first in recent memory in which we will not attend a barbecue, crack open a cold one with the boys, or go for one last beach day of the season — unless done so in outdoor settings and in small groups with the proper social-distance measures in place, of course. But allow us at TheWrap to pose an alternative: Stay inside and watch TV instead. Here are 17 options spaced out from Friday to Monday that just might keep you entertained.
“Away” – Netflix
Season 1 of this Hilary Swank-led series about astronauts on a very long mission to Mars premieres Friday.
“The Boys” Season 2 – Amazon
Instead of real live people, crack open a cold one with The Boys when the second season of this series about a vigilante group that keeps superheroes-gone-rogue in check premieres on Friday.

Howie Long has long helped Fox viewers understand the ins-and-outs of gridiron play. Now he’s going to encourage them to make a wager on what they might see.
Long is the latest Fox Sports personality to take up promotional duties for Fox Bet, the mobile sports-wagering partnership Fox Corporation operates in conjunction with Flutter Entertainment, the parent of the popular online-betting platform FanDuel. Don’t expect Long to help you make your way through the aforementioned corporate connections. But he will serve as a brand ambassador of sorts, offering sports insights to Fox Bet users.
At a time when a wide number of companies are dipping their toes into the facilitation of betting, executives see Long as an integral part of helping Fox’s sports betting offer stand apart from the rest. One of the most repeatedly asked questions in the NFL this season continues to be is if former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is going to come out of retirement. And James Corden, of all people, may hold the key to the three-time Super Bowl champion’s return to the field.
Gronkowski was a surprise guest on Corden’s “Late Late Show” Thursday night, and not just because he happened to be on the CBS lot filming the host’s new sports-themed show “Game On!” this week.
The three-time Super Bowl champion, who officially announced his retirement from the NFL in March, said he’s loving his post-football career of TV gigs, working out and new business ventures.

CBS has ordered a sports-themed game show “Game On!” from James Corden, based on the U.K. series “A League of Their Own,” that Corden hosts himself.
Keegan-Michael Key will host the U.S. version. He will be joined by Venus Williams and Rob Gronkowski, who will serve as team captains, while Bobby Lee and Iam Karmel will serve as comedian panelists.
Equal parts comedy and game show, the genre-busting “Game On!” pits two teams of three, captained by Williams and Gronkowski, with comedians Lee and Karmel plus a rotating mix of sports stars, comedians and celebrities, against one another.
The teams will go head to head in over-the-top physical challenges, from seeing who can dunk the most basketballs over a tank of water while harnessed on a bungee cord, to taking on a sumo wrestler in the ring. They will also have their sports-related knowledge tested with trivia questions,...

Terry Bradshaw’s appearance at Fox’s upfront presentation on Monday was intended to promote “Thursday Night Football,” but in poking fun at his time on “The Masked Singer,” the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback also made a racist comment about his network colleague, Ken Jeong.
“I love to sing, as all of you know who have my records,” Bradshaw said in the apparently improvised bit, after being asked by “Fox NFL Sunday” co-host Michael Strahan about his appearance on “The Masked Singer” earlier this year.
“Unfortunately, I was kicked off by Alan Thicke and the little short guy from Japan,” he said, jokingly referring to two of the show’s judges, Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong.

Jeong, who later appeared on the same stage at Monday’s event to promote the network’s hit singing competition, is Korean American.

Welcome to “TV Take,” Variety‘s television podcast. In this week’s episode, Variety’s executive editor of TV, Daniel Holloway, talks with Curt Menefee, host of “Fox NFL Sunday,” the long-running pre-game show being inducted into the Nab Broadcasting Hall of Fame in April.
Menefee has a pretty packed week. Mondays are his weekend, he says, discussing the lead-up to the show — “That is the day I like to try to do stuff with the wife” — but reviewing what happened the day before or having to take interviews sometimes gets in the way of that.
Preparation for the weekly live show begins Tuesday, and doesn’t stop until early Sunday morning leading up to the show’s airtime at 9 a.m.
Having been running since 1994, if it looks like he and his co-hosts Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson and Michael Strahan are friends, it’s because they are.

When “Monday Night Football” debuts on ESPN on this evening, fans may do a double-take after they see what executives at the network refer to as “The Boogermobile.”

Here are the five biggest takeaways from ABC’s upfront presentation on Tuesday.
Roseanne Barr is the face of ABC.
It didn’t take long for ABC to brag about “Roseanne.” Star Roseanne Barr appeared at the end of a prerecorded comedy video at the top of the show, then walked onstage to introduce Disney-ABC Television Group chairman Ben Sherwood as “the guy responsible for most of my tweets.” Barr drew strong applause as she stepped onstage — appropriate to her rediscovered star power.
As Sherwood boasted, “Roseanne” was this season’s highest-rated television program in the 18-49 demo — the first time in 24 years that ABC has had the No. 1 show. Sherwood and Barr hugged, and a few minutes later, ABC News teased a new marketing campaign featuring the voice of another “Roseanne” star, John Goodman.

On Monday, Fox unveiled the network's primetime slate for the 2018-2019 television season during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre.
"This year, we launched four of the Top 10 new shows on broadcast, which led to a very strong roster of young series returning for their sophomore seasons. That gives us tremendous momentum heading into the fall," said Newman and Walden. "With our increased investment in football, we're going to use the powerful platform of the NFL to launch our new comedies. We'll then take some big swings with dramas at midseason, which is a proven strategy for Fox."
The new comedies joining the lineup this fall are Rel and The Cool Kids. Inspired by the life of Lil Rel Howery, Rel is a multi-camera comedy starring Howery as a loving husband and father living in Chicago, who finds out his wife is having an affair, and must rebuild...

1. New Fox is here. Sort of.
Fox Television Group CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman leaned into into the questions surrounding Fox as the drama over Disney’s attempt to acquire the company’s entertainment assets plays out. “We want to welcome you to New Fox,” Walden told advertisers after “Beat Shazam” star Jamie Foxx introduced her and Newman, who added, “This is an exciting opportunity for our network. We have an opportunity to chart a new course for broadcast television.”
That course appears, based on the presentation, to be charted toward sports and entertainment programming designed for a broader appeal than some of the more idiosyncratic comedies and dramas that have made it to the network’s air in recent years. But questions about Newman and Walden’s...
