He’s a staple of the Marvel Universe, and this February, Peter Parker’s legacy will be honored with a milestone issue in Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #300.
A celebration of the Spider-Man legacy, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #300 follows the reveal of Peter Parker’s true identity as he goes up against the Tinkerer in what promises to be his biggest challenge yet! It’s a Mighty Marvel story worthy of a 56 page epic as the webslinger is joined in his fight by several Marvel heroes, including Black Panther, Iron Heart, Hawkeye, Wasp and more!
“We don’t take important issue numbers like #300 for granted,” teased executive editor Nick Lowe. “In this issue, Chip and Adam not only tie together all the threads they’ve laid down over the last year, but twist and turn you bigger than you thought possible and tee up the next arc that Everyone will be talking about.

So Netflix’s “Death Note” is finally available to stream around the world, and everyone is completely thrilled about it with no reservations whatsoever, the end.
Just kidding. While the release of Adam Wingard’s controversial manga adaptation has been overshadowed by everything from Hurricane Harvey to “Game of Thrones” and even a different story of Hollywood white-washing (albeit one with a happy ending, thanks to actor Ed Skrein agreeing to remove himself from the “Hellboy” remake), the movie has been kicking up a fuss ever since it was first announced that none of its major characters would be played by actors of Asian descent. The case may not be quite as cut-and-dry as it was with this year’s ill-conceived “Ghost in the Shell” remake, but the discussion around it may be even more valuable for that.
Below, IndieWire critics David Ehrlich and Hanh Nguyen dig into the issue.

The Fan-Favorite Character Goes Solo in April
This April, one of the most controversial characters in Marvel history returns to don the mask (and hoodie!) once more. Today, Marvel is pleased to announce Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1 – the new series from New York Times Bestselling creators Peter David (Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099) and Mark Bagley (Ultimate Spider-Man, All-New X-Men)! That’s right, Ben Reilly is webslinging his way back into comic shops everywhere later this year and he’s bringing two of the most accomplished & beloved Spider-Man creators of all-time with him! Only question is – will it be as a hero…or a villain?
It was the twist that shocked the world. Ben Reilly had returned, but not as he once was. Twisted and manipulated by the villainous Jackal, the fallen clone is out to break the cycle, and reclaim his destiny. Not as Peter Parker’s clone – but as his own man.

Marvel Entertainment is excited to announce that Aaron Kuder is exclusive to Marvel!
Reflecting on bringing his talents to Marvel, Kuder exclaimed “I’m completely stoked to be working at the House of Ideas again. I grew up as a Marvel kid (no really, my 7th birthday wish: grow up to be Spider-Man. But don’t tell anyone. Otherwise it won’t come true.)”
Kuder’s first assignment is teaming up with comic superstars Charles Soule and Jeff Lemire for the highly anticipated 4-issue Death Of X series, beginning in October. Set after the events of Secret Wars, Death Of X chronicles the previously untold story of rising tensions between two of Marvel’s most iconic groups – and sets the stage for the blockbuster Inhumans vs. X-Men event later this year.

[Lemmy passed away yesterday. Rip, you badass!] As we watch what may soon be the end of Motörhead, with a fine new album just out but iconic leader Lemmy's failing health forcing him from the stage on multiple nights, let's also look back at a milestone in the group's long career.
Bassist/singer Lemmy Kilmister started Motörhead in 1975 after getting kicked out of prog-rockers Hawkwind for being jailed on a drug charge in Canada during a tour. The band's early days were not marked by success. After being signed by United Artists, Motörhead's first shot at recording an album was rejected, and the label then blocked the group's attempted release of a single on Stiff. In '77 -- the lineup having completely turned over aside from its frontman -- they were ready to throw in the towel and even scheduled a farewell concert, but then Chiswick Records gave them money to record a single and...

Meet the all-new, funnier, axe-wielding Doctor Strange! Yes, with a big-screen outing for Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme on the horizon it was inevitable that the character would be reinvented in comic form, and he's nabbed himself a very impressive creative team in Jason Aaron (Thor, Weirdworld) and Chris Bachalo (Uncanny X-Men, Incredible Hulk). Aaron and editor Nick Lowe spoke with EW about what we can expect from the new take, and according to the latter this will be a more relatable, less serious Stephen Strange. "...A lot of Doctor Strange stories, they’re trippy and cool, but they live a lot in the head. And I think what this series does is it lives more in the heart and in the gut. And this is a Doctor Strange who is much more relatable, and way funnier. He’s not Bart Simpson cracking jokes left and right…although that’s a good idea,...

The Fantastic Four comic may be ending next month with issue #645, but it seems at least one member of Marvel's First Family will have a new place to call home. Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, will join the ranks of Charles Soule's Uncanny Inhumans alongside Inferno (apparently they needed 2 fire-guys), Medusa, Naja, Triton, and Iso. Storm does actually have some history with the Inhumans, as Marvel senior editor Nick Lowe points out in an interview with Wired UK. "It's fitting that the first Marvel hero to encounter the Inhumans is joining up with them. Johnny Storm is one of the best characters in the Marvel U and he's shaking up the Inhumans side of the Marvel U in a big way. Just wait until you see the last page!" You might be thinking this is another case of Marvel retconning a character's origins, but the site makes it...

What tragedy has befallen this region of Battleworld and how will these Spider-Men and Women deal with it? “The Spider-verse event in Amazing Spider-man brought you the first team of Spider-Men,” says Senior Editor Nick Lowe, “but not the last! Here we build and expand upon the Spider-Verse story in insane new ways!” Amidst the horrors of the Secret Wars, six spider powered heroes stand alone. After 37 years of fighting crime in the same outfit, Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, has been given a new costume. Spider-Woman was introduced to the Marvel comics universe in 1977, and the new outfit keeps the spirit of the original, but offers a different and cool new modern look. It includes more leather, black pants, two-toned gloves and a jacket that goes "from streetwear to spider-bedecked superhero gear in just a few snaps."
When talking about the costume, the comic's editor, Nick Lowe, said he "wanted a costume that walked the line between superhero-ready and something a woman would wear in the real world. But for the most part they're clothes to kick ass in." The redesign will also start a tone change for the series that will see the character return to a more 'street-level' approach to crime fighting. Lowe says:

Apart from a few short-lived variations, Spider-Man has had the same costume since his first appearance. The same can be said for Spider-Woman, but following her debut as a playable character in the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game with a very different appearance (screenshots from the game can be found below), Jessica Drew will also be seen in the new costume in the comic books from March onwards. That will mark a different direction for the character as the focus turns to her being more of a street level superhero. "As much as I'm a fan of spandex and it has its time and place, I felt Jess as a character could move away from that for a good long while," says Spider-Woman editor Nick Lowe. "Spider-Man isn't really a detective — he swings around looking for trouble, whereas Jess needs to go and figure stuff out and dig things up, and...

Following the release of a teaser image that appeared to show a group of Spider-Men sharing the stage, Marvel has revealed the next big event for Spider-Man due to kick off in November – “Spider-Verse”. Written by Dan Slott and illustrated by Olivier Coipel, the “Spider-Verse” story arc will begin in “Amazing Spider-Man” #9 for six issues (while crossing over into related titles) and will bring “every Spider-Man from every universe together for the first time.” This means that Spidey fans will get to see Spider-Man 2099, the original Scarlet Spider and even characters such as Spider-Ham and “1602″ Spider-Man sharing the same panels for the very first time!
Interestingly enough, Slott claims the inspiration for the story came after the release of the Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions video game back in 2010.

Nick Lowe Lincoln Center, NYC 10 August 2013
A couple months ago, I noticed that Glen Tilbrook of Squeeze and Nick Lowe would both be performing at the Boulton Center in Bay Shore, New York, in August. I can’t go to every show that comes down the pike and some times I have to make tough decisions. Having seen Nick a couple years ago at Town Hall and not having seen Tilbrook (or Squeeze) in five or six years, I suggested to my wife Linda that we opt for the Tilbrook show -- very reluctantly passing on Nick. It wasn’t long before something began to gnaw at me. I had to see Nick again. I noticed that he had a few other gigs lined up in the area and we decided that we would catch him at the Out of Doors at Lincoln Center series on August 10. A schedule of...

Nick Lowe has been grise for a few decades now, but over the last dozen years he’s gotten the éminence thing down, transforming from an ironic Brit-pop also-ran into a wry, ruminative old-fashioned troubadour, with songs and a voice worthy of that impressive head of hair. Lowe has now recorded a Christmas album, Quality Street, which makes some sense. There’s a bit of Father Christmas, a.k.a. Bing Crosby, in Lowe’s mellow croon, and his songs inhabit a kind of spiritual 1959, sitting snugly between Tin Pan Alley pop and country and early R&B and fifties rock and roll. (You can imagine Lowe’s recent songs being sung by Der Bingle or Nat King Cole or Patti Page or, for that matter, Gene Autry or Jackie Wilson or Buddy Holly.) Quality Street’s official release date is October 29, but it’s streaming, for one day only,...

Amazing X-Men will debut in November 2013, from the team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Ed McGuinness. Here's what Senior Editor Nick Lowe had to say about the project. "Nightcrawler is dead, but that's not the end of his story. The story will involve Azazel, Nightcrawler's father, as a "demonic pirate." "It is so good, I can't wait for you guys to read it. McGuinness is a major Nightcrawler fan and particularly enthused by this project." Click the link below for much more on the next big X-event, X-Men: Battle Of The Atom. 5) Spectrals “A Heartbeat Behind”
Directed by Ozzie Pullin
Although this isn’t the most exciting music video, it’s most definitely the best video Spectrals have produced. It’s made of mid-shots of the location and the band – if it wasn’t for the colour it wouldn’t really be that engaging. It’s shot on Canvey Island which is beloved location of such legends as Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and Graham Parker who are all Spectrals influences.
4) A-Trak “Jumbo”
Directed by Jason Miller
Ever since watching the impressive, time-consuming video for A-Trak’s “Tuna Melt“, I’ve wanted to check out more of his stuff. This week he released, a less impressive but still cool, trippy video for track “Jumbo” that features producer Galantis as a one-man basketball team. It’s a cool concept; I wish I had the patience to make something as cool as this.

Marvel has released a ton of new info and artwork from “Battle of the Atom”, the upcoming 10-part crossover event that will span such titles as “All-New X-Men”, “Uncanny X-Men”, “X-Men” and “Wolverine and the X-Men”. The event marks the 50th anniversary of the X-Men and continues the storyline that first began in “All-New X-Men” #1, in which Beast brought the original X-Men team from the past into the present in an effort to stop the present-day Cyclops from destroying the human race.
Gotta love time travel, right?
This September, celebrate the X-Men’s 50th anniversary with the first major X-Men crossover event in over three years—X-Men: Battle of the Atom! From the blockbuster creative team of Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Brian Wood, Frank Cho, Stuart Immonen, Chris Bachalo, David Lopez & Giuseppe Camuncoli, comes an event so exhilarating, and so groundbreaking that fans will be talking about this for years to come!

All-New X-Men has unveiled a new look for Beast in issue #5. Hank McCoy has experienced another change in his appearance, bringing him back from a cat-like to a more simian look. "We would often get in big disagreements (by we, I mean me and most of the room) at editorial retreats about Cat Beast vs Ape Beast," editor Nick Lowe told Newsarama. "Also, the old design doesn't look like an ape! "Anyway, my resistance was against reverting to the older version because I thought that the more beastly looking works better for the actual character. But since this is (more)...

As we reported earlier today (find it Here if you missed it), iconic X-Men member Beast has been given a new look as the result of yet another mutation. While artists have portrayed the character in various ways over the years depending on their respective styles, his most popular appearance was changed to something far more feline by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely back in New X-Men (much to the distaste of many fans). Well, our friends over at Newsarama caught up with All-New X-Men editor Nick Lowe to discuss this drastic new look for the iconic character. Below are a few highlights, but you can find much more by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page! On How The Decision To Alter Beast's Appearance Came To Be: We would often get in big disagreements (by we, I mean me and most of the room) at editorial...

Calling all bird watchers, this one of a kind variant featuring all of America’s greatest feathered patrons is a must have for any fan! “Ornithology is one of America’s greatest past times,” mentioned Senior Editor Nick Lowe. “With Inauguration day and Spring just around the corner – we could think of...

At the X-Men Panel I sat in front of the big names controlling the future of our favorite Mutants. Nick Lowe- Editor, Rick Remender- Uncanny Avengers, Si Spurrier- X-Men: Legacy, Peter David- X-Factor, Jason Aaron- Wolverine and the X-Men, Gerry Dugan- Deadpool, and the most bad ass name Dennis Hopeless- Cable and the X-Force.
Even though Brian Michael Bendis was not there, there was still a good amount of talk about his new series, All New X-Men, which sees the first students of Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngster get transported to the present, the roster is (Human-like) Beast, Angel, Iceman, Cyclops and Jean Grey.
Even though I think time-travel is overused (especially in X-Men)... I think that the Young Cyclops will replace the corrupted one because Young Scott Summers’ ideals are still in the right place. The first 3 months of the comic will be bi-weekly -- which means,...

The key to any voyage into the twangy depths of this weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is planning.
San Francisco's annual free celebration of bluegrass (and also not bluegrass) in Golden Gate Park, now in its 12th consecutive year, has gotten so popular that shuttling between stages to see all of your favorite bands can prove virtually impossible. Instead, the best idea is often just to get there early, pick a spot near the stage you're most interested in and stay there for the long haul.
(Scroll Down For Playlist And Lineup)
While the lineup was announced months ago, the actual full schedule, complete with set times, was only released recently. Essential planning's gotta all be done Right This Very Second.
Our top recommendations are Ben Kweller, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, The Dirty Three, the Heartless Bastards, Son Volt and Les Claypool's Duo De Twang. If you're curious as to why this is exciting,...

I’ve been a fan of Reilly Brown’s artwork since I first came across it in Marvel’s Cable & Deadpool, and have been following it off and on ever since. There are a lot of artists I like out there, but Reilly is consistently a favorite of mine – his characters’ expressions and the way his drawings capture the energy and emotion of whatever’s happening on the page really appeal to me. I also consider him among the pioneers of the digital comics medium. One of his current projects, Power Play, is a digital comic that was the first effective use of the medium that I had ever seen. To pull from my thoughts when I reviewed the Power Play preview in 2011:
“This is the kind of thing I geek out about, because it excites me to see the potential of the medium being explored to enhance the reading experience.

Tuesday’s 10 a.m. showing of 2016: Obama’s America drew about 20 customers to the big AMC theater in Times Square. A modest turnout, to be sure, but part of a larger wave that’s turned this conservative documentary into one of the summer’s independent film success stories.
After a small opening in July, the film expanded to almost 1,100 screens last weekend. Over three days, 2016—directed by Dinesh D’Souza and John Sullivan, and released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, a company that specializes in conservative movies—grossed a reported $6.2 million, with a per-screen average of almost $6,000, “the best of any film in wide release,” according to Reuters.
For an independently produced, politically themed documentary, these are gigantic numbers. Though 2016, which claims that President Barack Obama’s worldview was shaped by “anti-capitalist, anti-Christian, anti-American” thinkers, isn’t everybody’s idea of 90 minutes well-spent—many of its assertions don’t pass even a cursory B.

Most superhero movies try so hard to be the “definitive” story for the broadest possible audience that a lot of great, strange, and nuanced story arcs from the character’s life in print get ignored.
