With “trailblazer” being used in almost every Barbara Walters obituary, perhaps no singular video moment speaks more to the path she forged as a female journalist than the surprise she received on her final episode of The View.
Back on May 15, 2014, Walters ended her 17-plus year run as a cohost on the daytime program, which was conceived as “a talk show featuring four or five women of different backgrounds, different generations, and different opinions.”

Fans, admirers and former colleagues honored broadcast legend Barbara Walters, who died Friday at age 93, hailing her talent and skill as a journalist and the barriers she blew open for women in media over her decades in the business.
“Barbara Walters never flinched when questioning the world’s most powerful people. She held them accountable. She cared about the truth and she made us care too. Fortunately, she inspired many other journalists to be just as unrelenting. We are all better off because of her,” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote.
Moments after the news broke, Oprah Winfrey posted a touching tribute on Instagram. “Without Barbara Walters there wouldn’t have been me—nor any other woman you see on evening, morning, and daily news,” she captioned a photo of them together. “She was indeed a Trailblazer. I did my very first television audition with her in mind the whole time.”

Joan Lunden, who co-hosted Good Morning America from 1980 to 1997, has opened up about her abrupt exit from the ABC talk show, suggesting ageism played a significant part. Speaking to Yahoo!, Lunden, who now works as a special correspondent for NBC’s Today show, said of her ABC departure, “I didn’t talk about it for a long, long time. I believe in going out with class… as opposed to getting angry, like, what’s the point?” However, she said that she let the network know her feelings before she left. “I picked up the phone and I called the president of the network,” she recalled. “And I said, ‘I’m about to do you a very big favor. A year ago, NBC let Jane Pauley go and brought in Deborah Norville, and the audience was so upset with them because it was so obvious that you pushed out a woman,...

It was thirty years ago, on Valentine’s Day. A love affair with Oscar was about to begin. The psychological thriller “The Silence of the Lambs” opened in movie theaters to widespread critical acclaim. Based on the novel by Thomas Harris and starring 1988’s Best Actress Jodie Foster (“The Accused”) and Anthony Hopkins, the film knocked another spine-chiller (the Julia Roberts headlined “Sleeping with the Enemy”) off the top of the American box office chart. “Silence” would remain there for an impressive five weeks, grossing more than $130 million domestically and just over $270 million worldwide.
While the film pulled off the rare feat of pleasing both movie reviewers and regulars, it was initially seen as a wild card as an Oscar contender. After all, it was released before the 63rd Academy Awards (celebrating the best work of 1990) were even presented. Would “Silence” still resonate a year later? And then there was...

Robin Roberts used to play basketball in college. She says she’s still building muscles while working at “Good Morning America.”
The ABC morning program is many things all at once. It’s a news program. It’s a pillar of the economics of ABC’s parent Walt Disney. And increasingly these days, it is a broader media entity that spans TV and digital and more. “Everything is about the audience and the energy of live,” says Michael Corn, the program’s senior executive broadcast producer. “We’re a live event every morning.”
Roberts has been with the show since 2005, and has pivoted with a bevy of format changes over that period of time. As part of Variety’s cover story this week about the pace of transformation in TV’s morning programs, Roberts agreed to discuss how she keeps pace with new developments. New York’s Lincoln Center has lately turned into a high-profile backdrop for the streaming wars.
Last month, Netflix stormed the bastion of high culture during the New York Film Festival. On Monday night, Apple took over Lincoln Center’s vast plaza for the world premiere of The Morning Show, which producer and star Jennifer Aniston described as the tech giant’s “beloved flagship” of its closely tracked TV debut.
The plaza’s fabled fountain (memorably seen in films like The Producers) went silent and the Metropolitan Opera had a scheduled night off, making way for one of the city’s most elaborate premieres in recent memory. Festooned with Apple’s distinctive black and white iconography and a test pattern of primary colored bars, the event’s footprint extended down the steps to Columbus Avenue. Once inside David Geffen Hall, the 1,500 cocktail-attired attendees sipped from flutes of Veuve Clicquot as...

Hey, "Elementary" fans. We hope you guys enjoyed tonight's episode 12. Now that i's officially in the history books, it's time to see what Elementary will serve up to end the series in next week's series finale episode 13. That's right, guys. The series will sadly come to an end next week. So, episode 13 will be the last episode forever! We've got a few teaser descriptions from the lovely CBS folks. We will certainly be using those for this spoiler session. To get things started, this finale episode 13 does have a title. It has been revealed that the producers are calling it, "Their Last Bow." That sounds like a very fitting title since this is the last episode for all time. It sounds like episode 13 will feature some pretty interesting and intense scenes as Holmes and Watson continue to battle Odin. Holmes and Watson hear of Holmes' former love and enemy and more!

Bianna Golodryga has filled in at the desk of “CBS This Morning” so many times in recent months that when she recently woke up and saw the show on TV, she feared she had overslept. “Had I slept in?” she asked. “It has felt so natural to be there.”
No more questions about alarm-clock settings. Golodryga was named the show’s fourth co-anchor this week – just the latest in a recent parade of tweaks to the nation’s big morning programs. Once a place where the same hosts would greet viewers each day ad infinitum –Joan Lunden held forth on ABC’s “Good Morning America” for 17 years – A.M. news shows in this era make changes nearly every few months.
At a time when consumers are just as happy to reach for their smartphone for news as they are for the TV remote, the shows can’t afford to stand pat.

It's no wonder that pianist-composer Harry Connick Jr., 50, has found a muse in his wife, Jill Goodacre. "She is the strongest and most inspiring woman I know," he has gushed of the 54-year-old former model, who's mother to their three daughters: Georgia, 22, Kate, 20, and Charlotte, 16. His song "One Fine Thing" is a fittingly romantic tribute to his better half, who went public last year with her five-year battle with breast cancer. "You're a sunrise, you're heaven. You're the reason that God rested on day seven," he croons in the tune, which is off his Every Man Should Know album. Harry and his family in 2011. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Using music, Harry constantly shows just how much he loves his wife and will never let her go. Although Jill has now, thankfully, been cancer-free for more than five years, Harry told People that the thought of losing his wife to the...

It's been a grueling nine-month battle for Joan Lunden, but the former Good Morning America host is now cancer-free and finally getting back to feeling like herself again.
"I just shaved my legs for the first time since a year ago," Lunden tells People. "And I'm starting to get a little tiny bit of hair on my arms. When you've gone through this, you look at those things like, 'Am I normal again?' You kind of want to feel whole again."
Following her diagnosis on June 5, 2014, Lunden underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy, six weeks of radiation and a lumpectomy for her two tumors.

Joan Lunden has created a new online video destination specifically for breast cancer patients and their supporters. The former host of ABC’s Good Morning America launched the video subscription site Alive with Joan, using the Tapp subscription television platform.
Lunden, who is a breast cancer survivor herself, decided to make Alive with Joan a year after her triple-negative diagnosis. The $9.95-per-month subscription site includes information relevant to breast cancer patients, including how to break the news to friends and family and how to shop for wigs. Lunden said 15% of the revenue from Alive will be donated to breast cancer research.

“I risk it every day that I wake up. And I do it because I still feel good enough.”
Brittany Maynard, 29, didn’t have a choice when it came to being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. And she didn’t have a say in how long she would have left to live – six months or less, said doctors. She wasn’t able to decide how her body would change because of her disease, or that she would never be able to have the family she dreamed of. But she could choose one thing: How she died.
Brittany and her family moved to Portland, Oregon earlier this year, because it is one of the few states to have the Death With Dignity Act. And she picked November 1, a few days after being able to celebrate her husband’s birthday, but before her 30th birthday, on November 19, as the day she would take a lethal dose of medication.

19-year-old Brad Joyner’s biggest wish was to meet his ‘Breaking Bad’ hero.
19-year-old Brad Joyner had recently graduated high school when, in March, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer that required him to undergo radiation treatment and chemotherapy.
After his diagnosis, Brad started putting together a bucket list — or, as he calls it, a “Living List.” “This cancer is nasty with a low rate of survival. But I have a strong faith and wanted to really live,” Brad told Buzzfeed.
Some things he checked off pretty easily (riding in a train) while others were more difficult (swimming with sharks). But his number one item was meeting the star of his favorite TV show: Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston.
Brad’s mom and aunt thought up the hashtag #BreakingBrad and it spread on Facebook and Twitter, with people around the world posing for pictures with signs supporting the campaign.

Joan Lunden wants to be an inspiration.
The former Good Morning America anchor was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in June, and now, the TV journalist has removed her wig to show her bald head on the cover of People's Oct. 6 issue. "I could decide to do nothing, but that's certainly not my personality," the 64-year-old said of going public. "I was handed an opportunity to learn everything that I can about this and try to help others."
Lunden spoke to fellow cancer survivor Robin Roberts on-air about her diagnosis three months ago. "Robin told me waiting for your hair to fall out is excruciating," she recalled. "So I didn't want to wait."
Just one week after finishing her first chemotherapy treatment, Lunden shaved her head. "You know it's going to happen one of these days and you are wondering how and when, so I just owned it," she said.
