In the first intermission to air on Hockey Night in Canada without Don Cherry at his side, host Ron MacLean addressed viewers alone for almost five minutes, saying, “we are all hurting.” “I have collapsed a hundred times this week if not more,” he said. “We’re all disappointed.” MacLean says he has spent time “reflecting.” “I’ve sat all...

When it comes to the broader genre of reality programs, I’ve always loved those that you might call social experiments. From the various “decade house” series, or Frontier House, to those that have similarly put people into situations out of time, or at least out of their comfort zone. The CBC has announced a new series, Back in Time for Dinner, which will serve to take a Canadian family through six decades. The show will hit June 14th at 8 p.m. on CBC. Based on the Warner Bros. format that took a British family through similar paces, the series combines food, fashion and culture to turn the Campus family home into a virtual time machine. Each week the family will dive into a different decade, and much like those shows from the decade series, the shock of trying to cope with how things were in earlier times can make for quite the challenge.

Veteran hockey broadcaster Don Cherry is facing backlash after appearing to deny the existence of climate change and calling people who believe in the widely accepted phenomenon “cuckaloos.” Cherry, 83, made the remarks to co-commentator Ron MacLean on Saturday night during the first intermission of the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins, a day after Ontario’s newest forecasting groundhog...

The Vancouver Canucks have a rift with the CBC and might not make players available to speak after Saturdays' game during Hockey Day.
The Canucks will face the Toronto Maple Leafs, but an off-the-ice battle is brewing with Ron MacLean and the CBC.
The team didn't make players available last Saturday for post game interviews to the CBC, upset over MacLean's one-sided summation of the Alex Burrows-Stephane Auger affair.
MacLean ranted about the affair January 16 on Hockey Night in Canada and infuriated the Canucks and coach Alain Vigneault.

Whether you've been waiting for it or didn't expect it, here comes the time to express my thoughts on Battle of the Blades, a reality show shining by its presence alongside another reality show called Dragons' Den in CBC's schedule grid.
For those who don't know, the show (hosted by Ron Maclean and Kurt Browning), which is recorded live at the Maple Leafs Garden in Toronto, is more or less formatted like Dancing With the Stars and Dancing on Ice, a British reality show in which celebrities are paired up with a figure skater. Moreover, eight former NHL stars are paired up with eight female top figure skaters. Each week, Canadians decide which couple survive after the first performance (Sunday at 8 Pm) and which ones go in the bottom 2 the following day (Monday at 8 Pm) in order to perform for their survival.
By the way, before I start telling my opinion,...
