“I love the obsessive mind, and I’ve always been an obsessive person,” says author Caroline Kepnes, whose talent for the all-consuming has benefited book publishers and Hollywood showrunners alike for the past seven years.
In 2014, Kepnes published the thriller “You,” introducing readers to Joe Goldberg, a bookish heartthrob whose highbrow taste and social media know-how made him a dream lover for unsuspecting women — before he eventually revealed himself as a serial killer. I changed my mind, I think we should put it up for adoption.
Such is the sort of dilemma that good ol' Olivia Lockhart (Andie MacDowell) is here to fix in the second season of Cedar Cove (2013-), based on the series by Debbie Macomber. Macomber writes more books in a year than I get haircuts. The Cedar Cove series got a new member about once a year from 2001 to 2011. She even wrote some of the scripts for this show. How she ever found time to knit and then write a book on the subject boggles the mind. Then again, if her books are as full of banal common sense and low drama as the Hallmark "original" series, then I'm pretty sure all you need is a life supply of adderall to put together one of these manuscripts at typing speed. Reading them must be like eating paste. Some people like paste.

Andie MacDowell, who currently stars on Hallmark Channel’s sun-soaked series Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove, may have grown up watching Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons, but there was definitely a wild streak. After explaining that she still doesn’t sit down long enough to watch a lot of TV—unless it’s binge-watching the first season of Girls with one of her daughters —the subject turns to daughter Margaret Qualley working with Liv Tyler on The Leftovers.
“She went to see Aerosmith. And I did go see Aerosmith when I was in high school,” MacDowell says.

Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove returns to Hallmark Channel on Saturday for its sophomore season with Sue Tenney (7th Heaven) taking over as showrunner, a move that excites the show’s star, Andie MacDowell. “I feel like Sue has a good handle on things,” she says. “She was able to get us out of all of the high drama that we were left in, and maneuver us into some other situations that I think are actually more interesting.” The high drama to which MacDowell is referring is Season 1’s sensational conclusion, where MacDowell’s Olivia reunited with her love, Jack, her daughter’s Justine’s … Continue reading →

The Hallmark Channel‘s first volley into the world of original scripted programming, Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove, is hitting for home audiences on July 15th, just in time for a serious binge before the second season hits on the 20th.
The show’s initial run was quite the success, taking over its time slot for cable networks, and leaving viewers hungry for more.
Not only did viewers flock to the show, if the internet reaction is any judge, Andie MacDowell really grabbed hold of people.
Mark your calendars for this one.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that there are going to be a lot of special features, and this is just the sort of show that might have fans hoping for a bit more.

Hallmark Channel will develop Sheryl Woods’ Chesapeake Shores novels for a potential primetime series to launch in 2015. The deal, announced today by Harlequin, comes on the heels of an agreement between Harlequin Mira and Woods that includes two new Chesapeake Shores books in 2015 to coincide with the possible series launch. Woods introduced the Chesapeake Shores series in 2009 with The Inn At Eagle Point. It centers on the O’Brien clan—a large Irish-American family living on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in a town designed and founded by three O’Brien brothers. The television series focuses on the drama that ensues when the O’Brien family reunites after years apart to face the memories from their past and learn the importance of reconciliation. Chesapeake Shores is the second Harlequin Mira series to be adapted by the Hallmark Channel as an original television series. Zap2it: How do you describe Olivia?
Andie MacDowell: She is the voice of reason in the town. She has a really good heart. She is close to her community and really cares for people in her community. She is following in her father's footsteps. She has been taught to care for people and be responsible. She is afraid to let her guard down sometimes. She is reserved unless she is with her best friend, Grace (played by Teryl Rothery), who is more crazy and fun and lets her be relaxed and fun. And her mother helps her too. She shot a scene the other day with Jack (Dylan Neal), when she was not reserved. There is a public side. She has an image she has to keep up.
Zap2it: Did you read Debbie Macomber's books to prepare for this or just for pleasure?

Zap2it: Do you like building a back story for your character?
Dylan Neal: With television, what is different from doing a film is you really do fill in details, because there is no sequel. With a television show a lot of holes are left intentionally blank because you don't know where you are going to go. The actors, showrunners, and writers room are all on a journey. You think you are going left and then you go right. It is Ok to not have all of the pieces in place when you start. It's a journey.
Zap2it: Did you read Debbie Macomber's books?
Dylan Neal: Once a book becomes a film or TV series, I am not beholden to the author. I am beholden to the screenwriter or showrunner. I purposely didn't read the books. I hear things about the novels, and know we are losing by following it.

On Saturday (July 20), Hallmark Channel's first original scripted series premiered, bringing author Debbie Macomber's books to life. "Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove" stars Andie MacDowell and highlights the slower and simpler side of television. But did it live up to its source material?
MacDowell stars as Olivia Lockhart, the municipal judge in the titular town, a coastal community in Washington State that's so idyllic it almost harkens back to a different era of television. In the two-hour pilot, Olivia is offered the change to take the federal bench -- a job that would take her out of Cedar Cove. You can probably guess how that resolves itself.
"Cedar Cove" looks to be a leisurely alternative bit of programming for those viewers who are turned off by today's fast-paced TV dramas. But is it satisfying to fans of Macomber's books? If you watched the premiere, let us know what you...

TV can be painfully derivative, and when a show comes along that is not easily categorized, other than light drama, it's risky.
When that show is Hallmark Channel's first scripted series, it's even more of a chance. But "Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove," debuting with a two-hour pilot Saturday, July 20, looks to be as sure of a deal as anything could be.
Starring Andie MacDowell, the series fills a gap. It's a quiet drama, without dismemberments, supernatural forces or fantastic premises. For those who have had enough boorish behavior, this is a welcome respite.
"I like to think about it as a little bit of a modern version of Andy Griffith, and I'm Andy," MacDowell tells Zap2it. "I don't want to be agitated so much on television. I don't need to watch any more agitation."
There's a peaceful quality to the show. That quietude comes from MacDowell's character, Olivia Lockhart,...

There could be a new outlet for actors trying to escape the glut of roles available on increasingly horrific crime procedurals: the Hallmark Channel. The channel, which bills itself as the "nation’s leading destination for quality family programming," announced that it will make its first foray into original scripted series with “Cedar Cove,” starring Andie MacDowell and now heading into production in Vancouver. Casting directors who have worked with Hallmark in the past on its TV movies say they've yet to be contacted about casting the series, which also stars veteran TV actor Dylan Neal. But Cathy Reinking, a casting director with an extensive TV résumé, said the series could be a breath of fresh air for actors looking for guest or co-starring roles.
