The venerable Deadline reports that a new Stargate series and a new movie/s are currently being discussed at Amazon, with the movie “likely going first.”
It’s not a huge surprise to learn that Stargate (along with Robocop) is a priority for Amazon now that the $8.5 billion MGM purchase has bedded in – they were on the list mooted by industry insider Jeff Snider back in March – but this is the first time one of the major news sites has weighed in.
What is new is the suggestion that it could open with a new movie, which totally makes sense. After all, Amazon recently found its cinema legs with the $100 million release of Creed III, and a new blockbuster Stargate movie would be a fantastic way to kick off a new series in style. That’d hopefully give a new Stargate series a much better chance of survival than so...

The Quietly Superb ‘Dark Matter’: Blast Off With the Crew of the Raza for Quarantine Sci-Fi Escapism
Photo: 'Dark Matter'/Syfy Syfy’s Canadian science-fiction series ‘Dark Matter’ is everything to love about a pulpy space opera: a ragtag group of space pirates, heists that inevitably turn into blaster or sword battles, an endearing and increasingly human-like android, and a doozy of a mystery. When six people and an android aboard the starship Raza awaken from stasis to find their ship on critical life support, they realize none of them have any memory of who they are—or were. Someone on the ship tampered with their memories, but who, and why? Hulu's Utopia Falls brings a musical twist to the Ya dystopian genre.

Utopia Falls, Hulu’s latest TV series offering, has a premise straight out of young adult fiction. Every year, New Babyl hosts “The Exemplar,” which sees twenty-four teenagers participate in a musical competition to win the title, and make history. It’s Divergent meets Step Up and how you feel about either or both of those franchises is probably a good barometer for how you will feel about Utopia Falls.
Coming from showrunner Joseph Mallozzi and created by Canadian director R.T. Thorne, Utopia Falls seems like it should garner higher expectations than its weird premise would suggest. I am self-proclaimed Ya Trash, so on paper this was Extremely My Shit, but I realized (maybe too late) that there is a performance element to the show. Musicals can be a hard sell for many modern audience members,...

Hulu series Utopia Falls takes a future-set sci-fi premise and injects with a pop culture explosion of music and dance.
Utopia Falls may, upon first glance, seem like an aesthetically clinical future-society-type story, but the Hulu sci-fi series is set to showcase its hybrid genre nature as a paean to the arts, specifically the entirety of a forbidden pop culture of the past. – Let’s just call it Logan’s Run meets Fame.
The 10-episode hourlong series is set in the far future on a colony, focusing on a group of song-and-dance-inclined teens whose worldviews become upended after being exposed to an archive containing a forgotten pop culture panorama of music, literature, etc., resulting in a clash between the newly-edified and those attempting to uphold the traditions of their idyllic existence. Indeed, it’s a time-worn tale of generational clashes told through a sci-fi lens.

A former Stargate writer-producer has mounted an online campaign to bring out a new version of the classic science fiction series, which has been off the air since 2011, when the plug was pulled on Stargate: Universe after two seasons.
Joseph Mallozzi, who worked on Stargate: Sg-1, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate:Universe before becoming the showrunner/writer/Ep of his own Dark Matter, has encouraged fans to take up the call for a new series via the hashtag #WeWantStargate. So far, the response is blowing up, hoping to show series owner MGM that there is a huge fanbase willing to support new episodes.
Stargate started life as a 1994 film by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, then morphed into a television series in 1997 by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner. The series evolved into the 2004 Stargate: Atlantis and 2009’s Stargate: Universe.
But fans felt the final TV series was prematurely ended with its story half-told.

Warigami is a ten-part series, consisting of ten minute episodes that is a contemporary samurai saga. Wendy Ohata, played by Piggford, has just made three startling realizations: One, she has a twin brother; two, she’s a kami-jin – a descendent of an ancient Japanese people who can turn paper into deadly weapons; and three, there’s a kami-jin warrior hunting her down for reasons she doesn’t understand.
The series is created by Eddie Kim and directed by Jason Lapeyre, who directed Lifetime’s Who Killed Jon Benet?, with showrunner Andrew Allen, who worked on digital drama Rush: Inspired By Battlefield. Kai Bradbury (The Terror), Akiel Julien (The Next Step), Miho Suzuki (Colossal), and David Hewlett (Stargate: Atlantis) also star.

One of the most popular comic book-based franchises that doesn’t feature a superhero is without a doubt The Walking Dead. Since debuting on AMC nearly ten years ago, the horror series has managed to carve out an enormous fanbase for itself in an entertainment landscape that’s already overflowing with zombies. In fact, it’s now getting ready for its tenth season, and has even spawned a spinoff show in the form of Fear The Walking Dead.
But in a somewhat shocking move, the comic book that started it all came to an end this week with issue #193. And while it was a sad moment for many, it’s now turned into a rather humorous occasion thanks to a Tweet from CNN. Though it’s since been corrected, the outlet originally wrote the following:

“Dark Matter” (Syfy)
The “Dark Matter” TV series came years after the debut of the Dark Horse comic book it’s based on, but creators Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie originally conceived of the series — about six individuals who wake up on a starship together with their memories wiped — as a TV show before it was redeveloped as a comic in 2012.
“Wynonna Earp” (Syfy)
Syfy has a number of science fiction series based on lesser known comic book titles, including the fan-favorite “Wynonna Earp,” starring Melanie Scrofano as the demon-fighting descendent of legendary lawman Wyatt Earp.
“Outcast” (Cinemax)
After the massive success of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” creator Robert Kirkman went on to adapt his supernatural horror comic series “Outcast” for television. The adaptation, starring Patrick Fugit as the titular outcast, debuted on Cinemax in 2016.

Although many of our favorite shows are about to take a few months off, that doesn’t mean your TV will become obsolete during the summertime. SyFy intends to heat things up with the release of two trailers promoting the sophomore seasons of Dark Matter and Killjoys.
I admit that it’s not often I become addicted to a summer series, but I found myself pleasantly surprised when Dark Matter effectively entralled me with its intrigue, space exploration, and great characters that were just as unaware of who they were as the viewer was. With the team having been betrayed from within during the first season’s finale, I expect the new dynamic added to extend the scope of what’s been established.

U.S. cable channel Syfy has ordered further seasons of its two recent space-set science-fiction series "Dark Matter" and "Killjoys" which both wrapped their initial runs this month.
"Dark Matter," from "Stargate" show runners Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, will get a further thirteen episodes. That series, which averaged 1.8 million viewers during its first season, follows six mercenaries who awaken on a derelict spaceship with no memory of who they are and how they got there.
"Killjoys," from "Orphan Black" creator Michelle Lovretta, will score a further ten episodes. That show follows a trio of interplanetary bounty hunters who chase deadly warrants throughout a distant planetary system on the brink of a bloody class war. The first season averaged 1.5 million viewers.

A thought experiment: what if a suitcase full of circa 1980s Days of Our Lives plot devices crossed proton streams with a science fiction drama? You’d probably experience something like Episode 3 of Dark Matter, which comes complete with crew in-fighting, mysterious and coincidentally timed ship malfunctions, a misfit teen, and – dun, dun dun – a cliffhanger ending featuring an evil twin / clone. In other words, Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie used up a season’s worth of willing suspension of disbelief tonight. The Android is increasingly the brains of the operation, acting as cruise director, pilot and chief … Continue reading →

Syfy is jumping into the comic book-adaptation game, having acquired the rights to Dark Horse's Dark Matter graphic novel series. The network has picked up a 13-episode series based on Dark Matter, which actually only spawned four issues. The series will keep things in the Syfy family, as the original Dark Matter comics comes from Stargate writers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. The original comic tells the story of a spaceship crew who all wake up from stasis with no memory of their mission or even who they are. They begin to look for answers when the ship reaches its destination,...

Syfy have added another geek-friendly programme to their busy slate - an adaptation of the Dark Matter comics.
Along with 12 Monkeys, Dominion, Defiance, Five Ghosts, Hunters and Incorporated already on their slate, Syfy has recently announced it is working on another new series - an adaptation of Dark Matter.
Based on the Dark Horse graphic novels of the same name, Dark Matter will be a thirteen episode drama.
Stargate’s Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, who also created the comic, are leading the adaptation to the screen, with Prodigy Pictures helping Syfy out with the production.
As you may already know, Dark Matter was published across four parts in 2012, and sees the crew of an old spaceship wake from stasis memory-less. A twisty narrative stuffed with danger and deception follows. It was, we're told, originally intended for telly.
Sounds like an interesting project to us. We’ll be sure to pass on any updates.
