Exclusive: CNN will be ringing in the New Year with a film on a music superstar.
CNN Films’ award-winning documentary Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over, directed by Dave Wooley and David Heilbroner, will premiere on CNN January 1, 2023 at 9 pm Et and Pt, broadcast with limited commercial interruption.
Warwick got her start singing in gospel groups with family members in New Jersey, and became a pop music sensation when she teamed with the songwriting duo of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, beginning with the 1962 song “Don’t Make Me Over.”
“Ms. Warwick’s own velvet-toned voice largely tells the story of her music and life for the film,” CNN Films noted in a release, “underscoring her creative and cultural legacies during six decades of an extraordinary career. The film explores her stunning range of musical styles and versatility.”

Washington, D.C. — To the delight of a standing-room-only audience that included the First Family, the Kennedy Center Honors paid hearty tribute on Sunday night to actor-singer Bette Midler, opera bass-baritone Justino Diaz, Motown founder Berry Gordy, “Saturday Night Live” honcho Lorne Michaels and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.
The event, last staged before a live audience in pre-covid 2020, had been conspicuously ignored by former President Donald Trump following criticism from two honorees in 2017. By contrast, President Joe Biden happily reinstated the tradition of hosting honorees at the White House before attending the production. He and First Lady Jill Biden were joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Douglas Emhoff.
The wait by audiences was fully rewarded as the 44-year-old Honors program delivered a seemingly nonstop parade of A-list participants offering heartfelt tributes and rousing entertainment for the honorees gazing down from the president’s box. The show will air Dec.

David Letterman opened Sunday night’s Kennedy Center Honors by telling the audience in the Opera House, “Tonight, it is quite nice, very nice, to see the presidential box once again being occupied.”
The crowd cheered and then gave President Joe Biden a standing ovation, after which Letterman quipped, “The same with the Oval Office.”
The ceremony marked a return to the large-scale, lavish gala of tradition, as Covid-19 forced last year’s ceremony to be postponed and later scaled back. But it also was the return of the presidential seal of approval, after four years in which President Donald Trump did not attend or host a pre-ceremony reception at the White House.
Instead, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted honorees Justino Diaz, Berry Gordy, Joni Mitchell, Bette Midler and Lorne Michaels for an event in the East Room before the ceremony. The president gave Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live,...

Surely one of the most fabulous movies to emerge out of the virtual SXSW Film Festival earlier this year was Todd Stephens’ “Swan Song.” This prickly dark comedy stars German cult movie icon Udo Kier as a retired hairdresser who escapes his humdrum nursing home to honor one of his favorite client’s dying wishes. Check out the trailer for the film below.
You know Udo Kier as the muse of filmmakers such as Lars von Trier and Gus van Sant. The 76-year-old Kier, who was born in Germany near the end of World War II and therefore knows a thing or two, has been primarily typecast into bit character roles throughout his career, most recently as a raging cuckold who gouges the eyes of his wife’s lover in the bleak and brutal Holocaust drama “The Painted Bird.” But he brings to each of his movies an enthusiasm despite the dour material,...

On March 16, 2020, Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley launched “Stars In The House” in response to what they knew would be an immediate need for funds in light of the Broadway shutdown.
Now, one year and over 375 episodes later, “Stars In The House” has raised over $715,000 for The Actors Fund, and an additional $200,000 for other charity organizations who have needed support throughout the pandemic.
“We can’t believe it has been a year! We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our viewers, who send in donations from all over the world,” said Rudetsky and Wesley. “We thought that after the first few weeks, contributions would dwindle and the show would be more about bringing some joy and positivity during these dark times. But the fact that we have been able to do both – deliver fun and financial support – is beyond our wildest dreams. We are so grateful to our team behind the scenes,...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety”…
We’re just a couple days away from Liza Minnelli’s birthday, which is March 12. As I first told you, the Hollywood legend — and Variety cover star — will be feted that night with “Love Letter to Liza: A 75th Birthday Tribute Celebration,” a virtual extravaganza benefiting The Actors Fund. Close to 50 celebs are taking part, including Joel Grey, Lea DeLaria, Kristin Chenoweth, Melissa Manchester, Ben Vereen, Sandra Bernhard, Jonathan Groff, Michael Feinstein, Ute Lemper, Tony Hale, Nathan Lane, Neil Meron, Kathy Griffin and Minnelli’s sister Lorna Luft.
“The best email you’re ever going to get in your lifetime is Lily Tomlin sending you a video of her doing all her characters,” producer Daniel Nardicio says of the pre-recorded tributes. “She did all of them congratulating Liza.” Also on the bill is former “Seinfeld” star Jason Alexander, who appeared with Minnelli...

On September 21, SiriusXM’s Seth Rudetsky and his husband, producer James Wesley, were joined by stars of the stage, screen, and dance floor for the latest iteration of their critically acclaimed Concert For America.
The evening was filled with moving and thrilling performances, and calls to action from members of the entertainment community, as well as those who have been most impacted by the recent immigration crisis. Newlyweds Chris Wood (Supergirl) and Melissa Benoist (Supergirl herself!) dazzled the audience with their own rendition of “An Old-Fashioned Wedding” from Annie Get Your Gun. Dancing With The Stars couple Kate Flannery and Pasha Pashkov were joined by Pasha’s wife Daniella Karagach to show off their moves. In a March 6, 1973, review of Blood, Sweat & Tears at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Variety briefly praised the opening act: Bruce Springsteen was “a young man with a hot guitar from Asbury Park, N.J.” If you substitute the word “ageless” for “young” — the Boss turned 70 on Sept. 23 — the description still fits.
Springsteen’s first mention in Variety occurred when reviewer Fred Kirby caught a 65-minute set at Kenny’s Castaways in New York and accurately predicted, “Bruce Springsteen, 22, appears ready to make his impact.” Just three years later, Variety noted that the singer-songwriter “hits it big with front covers this week on both Time and Newsweek. It’s the first time in recent memory that a pop artist has been doubly front-paged.” Springsteen’s documentary “Western Stars” debuted Sept. 12 at the Toronto Film Festival, and Warner Bros. opens it wide Oct. 25.

By now you've probably heard mention that Steven Soderbergh, he who is officially retired but not really because nobody totally believes it and he still works in various capacities, just posted his list of everything he watched and read this past year. I love Soderbergh's List-Mania more than I even love Soderbergh because I relate. This is now my favorite celebrity listing tradition of each year, not that there are very many consistent ones.

Summer means two things for most Americans: A family trip and a lack of decent TV. However, if you're currently stuck at home, wishing you could find something better to watch, we've got an easy, free solution. You can just ride along with your favorite sitcom of choice! Remember when sitcoms regularly had group vacations, played out over a series of episodes or even over two-hour movie events? Sure, Modern Family still does an "away" adventure about once per season, but there was a time when a vacation episode was a full-fledged TV event. Shows you loved would ditch the...

The late, hugely personable talent and very rare Pegot -- winner of a Pulitzer Prize, four Emmy Awards, four Grammys, three Oscars and a Tony -- composed some artists' biggest hits, such as Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" and Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better" (from the James Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me"), and refitted Scott Joplin's ragtime sounds for "The Sting."
Hamlisch also gave Broadway the hits "A Chorus Line" and "They're Playing Our Song" and kept at his craft to the end, scoring the HBO drama "Behind the Candelabra" just before his passing in August 2012.

When most The Biggest Loser contestants are eliminated, they devote themselves solely to their weight loss. But Ruben Studdard is more focused on something else – his career.
"It was difficult leaving," the American Idol winner told reporters after being eliminated from the NBC weight-loss show. "But I had a lot of work waiting on me when I left the ranch. As soon as the next day started, my work started."
The "Sorry for 2004" singer is currently working on a new album with producer David Foster and will be heading out on a Christmas tour with CeCe Winans, Peabo Bryson and Melissa Manchester.

Jimmy Fallon and John Krasinski are fierce competitors! The Office star stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon this week to promote his hit show's series finale, and then he challenged the comedian to a lip-sync battle. Let's just say, their performances got very intense during the musical showdown. "We're going to take turns lip-syncing sections of well-known songs," Fallon said, adding, "Each of us trying to lip-sync better than the other guy." Fallon began with a dramatic lip-syncing of Melissa Manchester's "Don't Cry Out Loud." Krasinksi then performed "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry. "Fake breathing at the end and everything," Fallon quipped at...

Jimmy Fallon hosted a battle for the ages on Tuesday night. And most would say he lost, including Fallon himself. The challenger: John Krasinski from "The Office." The game? Hardcore lip-sync contest. Well, maybe not "hardcore" considering the first two songs performed were "Don't Cry Out Loud" by Melissa Manchester and "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry. But as it turns out, Krasinski may actually be better on stage with a fake microphone than he is at pushing paper in a cubicle. Now that The Office has wrapped, John Krasinski has the freedom to do awesome things like grow a beard and participate in epic lip sync battles with Jimmy Fallon. Apparently, Krasinski had suggested it, too, so thank you. Fallon opened with Melissa Manchester's "Don't Cry Out Loud," which John upped with Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." Then followed Fallon's Das Efx's "They Want Efx" matched against John's cover of "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers," and for the ultimate showdown, Jimmy on "Over the Rainbow," and John down on bended knee with Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love to You." Catch all the jacket-stripping, ear piece-grabbing, in-your-face-swaggering affectations of the lip sync battle straight ahead.

New York Observer critic Rex Reed made headlines when he panned "Identity Thief," the new comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman. But what earned him so much attention wasn't his poor review (the movie was panned in a lot of places), but in his remarks about McCarthy, calling her a "female hippo" and "tractor-sized."
Now Reed has defended his comments, telling Wor-am New York that the controversy was "what sold tickets," as "Identity Thief's" $36.6 million was the biggest opening so far of 2013.
Reed also says, "I object to using health issues like obesity as comedy talking points. That's what this girl does, this Melissa Manchester." -- he means McCarthy. Melissa Manchester is a singer.
"I have too many friends that have died of obesity-related illnesses, heart problems and diabetes ... I don't find this to be the subject of a lot of humor," Reed continues.

Fontella Bass, a St. Louis-born soul singer who hit the top of the R&B charts with "Rescue Me" in 1965, has died. She was 72.
Bass died Wednesday night at a St. Louis hospice of complications from a heart attack suffered three weeks ago, her daughter, Neuka Mitchell, said. Bass had also suffered a series of strokes over the past seven years.
"She was an outgoing person," Mitchell said of her mother. "She had a very big personality. Any room she entered she just lit the room up, whether she was on stage or just going out to eat."
Bass was born into a family with deep musical roots. Her mother was gospel singer Martha Bass, one of the Clara Ward Singers. Her younger brother, David Peaston, had a string of R&B hits in the 1980s and 1990s. Peaston died in February at age 54.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!

Disney is continuing their trend of releasing everything in high-definition with 1986's The Great Mouse Detective. Based on Eve Titus's Basil of Baker Street book series, the movie paved the way for the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s. A great mix of adventure and humor makes this an entertaining homage to the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes.
Master of Disguise and detective Basil of Baker Street lives under the home of his sleuthing hero, Sherlock Holmes. The sinister Professor Ratigan kidnaps the greatest toymaker in London to create a mechanical version of the Queen of Mice in a scheme to take over the country. Basil and his new sidekick Dawson embark on a rescue mission and must also find a way to stop Ratigan's evil plan.
As usual, Disney's high-definition treatment of this minor classic is superb. The electrifying colors and dark London city settings give this a spooky yet lively atmosphere.

If you've ever read Inside Oscar, you'll know that the Best Original Song category at the Oscars has been infuriating people since time immemorial. They regularly snub instant classics and even when a great movie song is nominated it will usually lose. The music branch gets far less flak from the media than other controversial Academy subcategories like the Documentary group or the Foreign Language Film nominating committee but that's only because everyone knows that songwriting has very little to do with the actual art of cinema ... unless you're writing an original musical. Brett McKenzie's work on The Muppets aside, that really only happens once a decade or so.
Four other quirks to know.
The music branch Hates Madonna as a songwriter (the list of classic songs snubbed is alarming and her W.E. song "Masterpiece" has already been jettisoned) but likes her as a singer (both times she has...

Every era has its misfits, people who feel out of step with their contemporaries and the world. As a plea for tolerance and understanding of oddballs, Dirty Girl, the debut feature from writer-director Abe Sylvia, hits every note so squarely on the beat that in the end, it's nothing but square. It doesn't matter that Sylvia has stocked the soundtrack with killer '80s pop from the likes of Bow Wow Wow, Teena Marie and Joan Jett. The movie's true poster girl is the drippy Melissa Manchester, urging us to sing from our souls, because she thinks we can make it.

For lack of a better term, Dirty Girl is a coming-of-age story about a girl named Danielle (Juno Temple) and a boy named Clarke (newcomer Jeremy Dozier) growing up in 1980s Oklahoma. Written and Directed by Abe Sylvia, it is at once hilarious, bawdy, nostalgic, heartbreaking, and will send you home bopping your head to the best tunes from Melissa Manchester. I met with Abe Sylvia to talk about his new work, and found him to be as charming and lively as the characters he carefully crafts in his new film Dirty Girl.
What were you like as a teenager? Were you at all like Clarke?
I’m similar in that I grew up in Oklahoma; I ate my feelings like Clarke did. I certainly felt alienated from the other kids,...

The most common Lgbt duo in entertainment is the gay guy-straight girl relationship – Will and Grace, Carrie Bradshaw and Stanford Blatch, Kurt and Rachel, Liza Minnelli and most of her husbands – the list goes on and on.
The somewhat indie film, Dirty Girl, which has been making the festival rounds for more than year and officially opens on October 7, tells the story of yet another such pairing with funny and heartfelt results.
It's the mid '80s in Norman, Oklahoma. There are a few things you need to get right if you're going to make a movie set in the '80s: the fashion, the lingo and, without question, the music.
Every classic "Hey, weren't the '80s wacky?" film has leaned heavily on its soundtrack, and the folks behind the upcoming indie flick and Toronto Film Festival favorite "Dirty Girl" have apparently been taking notes. The soundtrack to the movie is stocked with pop cheese that will set off pastel-hued flashbacks in nostalgia buffs and entertain anyone who's into the whole yacht-rock revival that seems to be going on these days.
The first thing you'll notice about the "Dirty Girl" soundtrack, however, is how heavy it leans on a relatively obscure pop singer named Melissa Manchester.
