Showtime’s Your Honor will end after its upcoming season, series star Bryan Cranston said today in an interview on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. Filming on Season 2 has just started, with Joey Hartstone, who was a writer on Season 1, as new showrunner, Deadline has learned. Additionally, I hear Keith Machekanyanga, who recurred heavily as Lil Mo in the first installment, has been promoted to series regular for Season 2.
Your Honor originated as a limited series but, following its breakout ratings success, it was renewed for a 10-episode second season last year. Peter Moffat, who served as writer, executive producer and showrunner of the first season, opted not to return because he lives in the UK and wanted to stay close to family. David Manson was then brought on as showrunner, he subsequently also left and was succeeded by Hartstone this past spring.

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.
For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Could it be a blockbuster like “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Black Panther”? Or maybe a critical favorite such as “Roma,” “Green Book” or “The Favourite”?
Seepga Awards predictions: ‘A Star Is Born’ will be reborn with a Best Picture win

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”
Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...

The Emmys never sleep. Although television’s top awards show is more than eight months away, we start harvesting tea leaves with Saturday’s Producers Guild Awards, followed by the DGA and WGA awards in swift succession. While most of the attention naturally will go to the guilds’ film prizes and what they mean for the Oscars, these programs are (very) early bellwethers for TV as well.
While it’s nice to garner accolades from critics organizations and the HFPA, the more important notices come from the guilds: That’s where the voters are, and where most critics and HFPA members aren’t. Acknowledgement from the guilds means being celebrated by your peers — the same peers who again cast their votes come Emmy time.
That said, the Emmy season is still so nascent that it’s too early to even formulate the year’s most pressing issues. Even so, there are several shows — some new,...

Now we know what the most popular movies are vying for Oscars this year: The Producers Guild of America’s motion picture and television nominations went mainstream. Winners will be revealed at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards, to be held January 19 at the Beverly Hilton.
Many of these films will wind up on the the final list of Oscar nominations to be revealed on January 22; the eventual winners are here as well. That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. Oscar voters tend to take degree of difficulty in production into consideration, and may lean into big box office hits this year.
(Left off the PGA list are long-shot Best Picture contenders “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “First Man.”)

Streaming services have opened the door for multilingual series like worldwide Netflix hit “Narcos,” but dramas in English still dominate TV’s Golden Age, travel the most widely and draw the biggest distribution deals. International companies are scrambling for a piece of the action — including, perhaps surprisingly, producers in France, despite the country’s perceived snobbery about other languages.
Federation Entertainment, the 5-year-old firm behind Netflix’s first French show, “Marseille,” and Canal Plus spy show “The Bureau,” is the latest French player to step into the competitive U.S. market, with nearly a dozen English-language projects in the pipeline. Unlike outfits such as Gaumont or EuropaCorp, Federation is one of the few sizable, fully independent TV outfits left in France, and not only has opened an office in L.A. but is also developing projects with Paramount TV and other American companies.
Even so, breaking into the U.S.

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
The Oscars just got interesting! Will "Boyhood" triumph over "Birdman" at the Academy Awards?
In TV land, NBC was the big winner of the evening with two of their shows taking home trophies for Competition Television ("The Voice") and Live Entertainment & Talk Television ("The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon...

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Exclusive: FX Productions has signed a two-year overall production deal with writer-producer David Manson and his production company Sarabande Prods. Under the pact, Peabody Award-winning Manson will develop, write and produce series for FX Networks. The pact stems from Manson and FX’s recent collaboration on the network’s drama series pilot Hoke starring Paul Giamatti. Manson serves as executive producer on the project, from writer/executive producer/director Scott Frank, which just wrapped production. Manson first worked with FX on the limited series Thief, which won star Andre Braugher an Emmy. “David is an incredibly talented writer-producer and highly respected in the creative community,” said FX Networks and FX Prods President Nick Grad. “It’s great to have him under the Fxp umbrella, and we expect to announce some projects with him very soon.” Related: Louis Ck Inks Overall Deal With FX Productions For New Series CAA-repped Manson served...

FX has finalized its casting for the upcoming drama series pilot "Hoke," now set to star Paul Giamatti, Oona Chaplin, John Carroll Lynch, Robert Wisdom, Jordi Mollà and Tammy Blanchard. Scott Frank wrote and will direct the pilot episode, and he will be co-showrunner with David Manson if "Hoke" goes to series. Frank, Manson, Curtis Hanson, Carol Fenelon, Paul Giamatti and Dan Carey serve as executive producers. "Hoke" is a darkly comedic drama based on Charles Willeford's series of novels "Sideswipe," "New Hope for the Dead" and "The Way We Die Now". It is a story of mid-life crisis and murder that features the hardboiled and possibly insane homicide detective, "Hoke Moseley" (Giamatti), in pre-chic Miami circa...

It’s official: We tv has picked up its first scripted series with a 10-episode order to The Divide, written by Richard Lagravenese (Behind the Candelabra) and co-created by Lagravenese and Tony Goldwyn (Conviction), for a 2014 premiere. Additionally, We has closed development deals for three additional scripted drama projects from such auspices as Chris and Paul Weitz, Rj Cutler and Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson. Previous: We TV Eyes Expansion Into Scripted Programming With Series Order To AMC’s Lagravenese/Goldwyn Drama Pilot The Divide was originally developed and ordered as a pilot last year by We sibling AMC, which didn’t pick it up to series but left it in contention. The project’s series order by We tv had been contingent on finding a showrunner as David Manson, who ran the pilot at AMC, had moved to Netflix’s House Of Cards as executive producer. Veteran John Tinker...

Exclusive: AMC Networks‘ female-focused WEtv is looking to follow in the footsteps of siblings AMC, IFC and Sundance Channel by moving into original scripted series. I hear We is getting help in its plans from AMC, whose untitled Richard Lagravenese/Tony Goldwyn drama project is eyed to become We’s first scripted series. (The cable network also is exploring other scripted ideas.) I hear We is considering a nine-episode order to the Lagravenese/Goldwyn project, originally ordered as a pilot by AMC last year. It is a legal thriller centered on a district attorney (Damon Gupton) who uncovers new evidence that prompts the reinvestigation of a sensational murder case. It explores race, capital punishment, personal morality and how people struggle with the shades of gray found in the absence of a simple, ordered moral universe. I hear the potential series order is contingent on finding a showrunner as David Manson,...

Exclusive: Netflix and Mrc are beefing up the upper ranks of drama House Of Cards going into Season 2. David Manson has come on board as executive producer to work alongside showrunner Beau Willimon. The David Fincher drama starring Kevin Spacey received a straight two-season pickup by Netflix when the streaming service outbid HBO for the rights to the adaptation of the BBC miniseries. Season 1 premiered this past weekend, with Netflix making all 13 episodes available at the same time. Filming on Season 2 is expected to begin this spring. Manson recently served as executive producer/showrunner on AMC’s Richard Lagravenese/Tony Goldwyn legal thriller pilot. The project didn’t get a series pickup but was left in contention by the cable network. Manson’s credits also include New Amsterdam and Thief. Additionally, he created/exec produced the TNT series Saved.

Written by Lagravenese and to be directed by Goldwyn, the ensemble drama is a legal thriller centered on Adam Powell, a District Attorney who uncovers new evidence that prompts the reinvestigation of a sensational murder case. Tony nominee Ireland, repped by ICM Partners and Brookside Artist Management, will play Christina Rosa, an attractive, aggressive and impulsive woman of Italian-German descent who works with the Innocence Project. David Manson serves as showrunner on the pilot, which he executive produces with Goldwyn and Lagravenese. Ireland co-starred on the HBO mini Mildred Pierce. She also recurs on Showtime’s Homeland and is seen in the movie Hope Springs, which opened this weekend.

The untitled project is a legal thriller centered on a District Attorney who uncovers new evidence that prompts the reinvestigation of a sensational murder case. It explores personal morality and how people struggle with the shades of grey found in the absence of a simple, ordered moral universe. FX's pilot Outlaw Country is undergoing a retooling. The original script, written by Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz, has been given a rewrite by Goldin, Abramowitz and Outlaw Country's executive producer/co-showrunner David Manson. There will be substantial reshoots, which will be directed by actor-helmer Adam Arkin. Arkin is stepping in for the original pilot's director Michael Dinner, who would've done the reshoots had he not been busy with another FX pilot he is directing, Powers. There won't be major recastings on the project, a crime thriller/family drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime and Nashville royalty that stars Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes. I hear a couple of small new roles have been added and another small part, played in the original pilot by Lisa Blount, will be recast following the actress' death. Getting Outlaw Country off the ground has been a long and arduous process.

Fox has decided to cut short the run of New Amsterdam, the dramatic TV show about an immortal cop from the Big Apple.
The series has had a rough ride at the network. Amsterdam was initially scheduled for Fall 2007 but was pushed back to mid-season. On top of that, Fox cut its episode order from 13 to eight episodes.
On the positive side, the series was scheduled for an unpopular Friday night timeslot but was ultimately given a shot on Monday nights.
Amsterdam's season average of 8.34 million weekly viewers isn't great but it certainly outperformed and outlasted Canterbury's Law.
Though Fox considered continuing the story of John Amsterdam (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) for another year, the network ultimately decided his story had come to an end. Still, Amsterdam executive producer David Manson hopes that the series will live on and find a new home on another network. Will that...
