Over the television year, not only do specific shows and specific seasons stand out, but so do specific episodes. Certain episodes rise above the rest of the television landscape in a variety of ways, whether it’s due to excellent direction, strong character exploration, or something else entirely. For the past few years, Sound on Sight TV has highlighted these standout episodes, both at the midpoint of the year and again in December, and thanks to its sheer quantity of fantastic television, 2015 brings our most extensive list yet. Presented below are the best episodes from the first half of the year (January through the end of May), as curated by a panel at Sound on Sight consisting of Editor in Chief Ricky D, TV Editor Kate Kulzick, Managing TV Editor Deepayan Sengupta, and TV contributors Simon Howell, Sean Colletti, Randy Dankievitch, and Whitney McIntosh.

You already understand "Clipped." It's a multicamera sitcom set in a Boston barbershop called Buzzy's. There are rowdy characters, thoughtful characters, weird characters. A guy named Buzzy (George Wendt) runs the place. Big accents. Romantic squabbles. Every punctuation mark is a guffaw cue. You get it. But when I visited the set of TBS' new sitcom created by "Will & Grace" alums Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, I realized there's actually a lot more going on here. While George Wendt insisted -- sheepishly -- that his new character is basically a gay version of Norm from "Cheers" (with no added denotational hand gestures of "gayness"; Wendt says Mutchnick put the kibosh on his attempts to seem more effeminate), "Clipped" gives Wendt a chance to play den father to young improv-trained talents, a natural fit for the onetime Second City star. Check out the glitzy set where he gets to show off his comic and tonsorial chops.

Another TV staffing season is coming to a close as, one by one, writers rooms of new and returning series are convening to work on the 2011-12 orders. Overall, "it was a healthy staffing season," one industry insider said, while another was lamenting the system, in which prospective writers meet on 80+ pilots in the run-up to the upfronts, only a quarter of which would make it to series and actually hire scribes. Of the new series, comedies New Girl on Fox, Two Broke Girls on CBS and Apartment 23 on ABC were sought after by writers this year. Joining New Girl creator Liz Meriwether are Joe Port and Joe Wiseman as co-executive producers as well as J.J. Philbin and Josh Malmuth. Three established comedy writer-producers will work alongside Two Broke Girls co-creator/executive producer Michael Patrick King -- Greg Malins, Jhoni Marchinko and Michelle Nader, all as consulting producers. Danneel Ackles (formerly Harris) and Jamie Lee Kirchner have landed the last 2 leads in NBC's comedy pilot I Hate That I Love You. The single-camera project, from writer/exec producer Jhoni Marchinko and 20th TV, is described as a twisty romantic comedy in which a straight couple, Brad (Nick Thune) and Missy (Kirchner), introduce their lesbian roommates, Brad's Allie (Ackles) and Missy's Sarah (Anna Camp), to each other. Ackles, repped by Gersh and Untitled, co-stars in 20th TV's comedy series for NBC Friends with Benefits, which is yet to be scheduled. A day after his FX series was canceled, Lights Out co-star Billy Brown has booked a pilot, NBC's drama Reconstruction. Written by Josh Brand, the project is set in a Missouri town during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era and centers on Jason (Martin Henderson), a soldier who crosses the country and settles into a complicated town where he is welcomed as its savior.

The single-camera project, from writer/exec producer Jhoni Marchinko and 20th TV, is described as a twisty romantic comedy in which a straight couple, Brad (Thune) and Missy, introduce their lesbian roommates, Brad's Allie and Missy's Sarah (Anna Camp), to each other. Earlier this season, Thune was attached to another NBC comedy project, an ensemble show penned by Spike Feresten. Thune, repped by Wme and 3 Arts, has a Web series, Nick's Big Show. Colin O'Donoghue (The Rite) has landed the male lead in ABC's drama pilot Identity. The project, from ABC Studios, Mark Gordon Co. and writer John Glenn, is an action procedural based on a British format that centers on an elite police unit formed to combat the explosion of identity-related crime. Irish-born O'Donoghue will play John Bloom, an intensely private,...

After a rather aggressive pilot season that has spared no expense in terms of big names (Stephen Spielberg, David E. Kelly, Chelsea Handler, Debra Messing, Peter Berg, Michael Patrick King, Jack Black, etc.), NBC has more or less finished ordering pilots for 2011-12. All in all, there are 24 pilots in total (11 dramas, 13 comedies) and a lot of 'em don't sound half bad.
I know, you can hardly tell anything by titles and descriptions, as shows good on paper can be executed poorly and shows that sound ridiculous can be the funniest or most touching show around, but now that we finally have every order in, it's not a bad idea to look through what they have here, what they need, and where they're going as a network.
What they have here is a whole lot of risks (especially on the drama side), but that's what it's going to take in...

NBC is pretty much done ordering pilots for the 2011-12 prime time season and, under the new leadership of Robert Greenblatt, the network seems to be doing exactly what it needs to dig itself out from behind CBS and Fox: It needs to go big and bold. (Right now, NBC ranks third among adults 18-49 with a 2.6 rating/7 share and fourth in viewers, with 7.8 million). Though the network has picked up its share of (safe) comedies, it’s definitely taking some much-needed risks with drama development. The Wonder Woman project from David E. Kelley may come with a high-price tag,...

No doubt hoping to capitalize on Glee mania, NBC has ordered an hour-long musical pilot that follows a diverse cast of characters who come together to stage a Broadway show.
Titled Smash, the project boasts an impressive pedigree. Producers include Steven Spielberg, Chicago duo Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, and Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Spring Awakening‘s Michael Mayer is in talks to direct, which pretty much guarantees that there’s a role in this for Lea Michele’s former Spring leading man (and ex-Glee costar) Jonathan Groff.
Elsewhere on the pilot front, NBC has greenlit...

New NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt is putting his stamp on the network's development with a pilot order for a project he originally developed while at Showtime. NBC just greenlighted Smash, an ambitious one-hour musical about the mounting of a Broadway musical based on an idea by Steven Spielberg. The pilot, which will be produced by DreamWorks TV and Universal Media Studios, follows a cross section of characters who come together to put on a Broadway musical. TV writer/playwright Theresa Rebeck wrote the script and is executive producing with Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of DreamWorks TV, Hairspray producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Grammy and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman who will pen original songs for the show. Negotiations are underway for Michael Mayer (American Idiot) to direct. Smash joins an expansive slate at DreamWorks TV, which includes 4 series, including the upcoming The Borgias...

In 1997, Kelly Oxford, a stay-at-home mother of three in Canada, started a blog that was later joined by a Twitter feed. Will & Grace alumna Jhoni Marchinko is supervising the pilot and is also executive producing behind her 2-script deal at 20th Century Fox TV.
