Given all the intellectual property auctions going lately -- Thq just wrapped theirs up, only to be followed by Atari -- I've been a little curious about how it all even works. Is it a silent auction? Is there a cowboy-hatted Texan fast-talking, "1.35 million, 1.35 million for 'Homeworld'"?
According to a refreshingly frank Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, it mostly happens over the phone.
During a Pax Australia panel last week, Gearbox announced its plans to remaster "Homeworld 1" and "2" and release them on Steam. Pitchford also took the opportunity to explain how high-level rights purchases go down.
"When Thq started to evaporate, Brian [Martel] kept coming to my office everyday and saying, 'Hey Randy, you got to get Homeworld,'" he explained. Brian Martel is Gearbox' chief creative officer. It's "sort of a weirdly long process."
During initial bidding, interested parties had to put money into a special account,...

During a panel during Pax Australia, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed a handful of new details about his company's plans to re-release "Homeworld" and "Homeworld 2" on Steam.
For anybody not glued to the PC gaming scene in the early years of last decade, "Homeworld" is a classic space strategy series, developed by Relic Entertainment and originally published by Sierra On-Line. It was well-received at the time and has remained popular among strategy enthusiasts.
The late, great Thq bought Relic in 2004 and later acquired the rights to "Homeworld" from Sierra as well. Relic parted ways with its creation when Thq went under late last year, though: Relic was eventually sold to Sega (which sparked its own lawsuit), and Gearbox made off with "Homeworld" at auction, driven by Chief Creative Officer Brian Martel's personal attachment to the game.

Long-dormant Relic Rts, Homeworld, has been bagged by Gearbox software...
Recently the target of a new crowdfunding campaign, the move to secure the rights to Relic Entertainment's Homeworld Rts was outbid, thus stopping the Kickstarter project in its tracks. At the time, it was a total mystery who had won the rights to use the sci-fi strategy title's license.
Well, it's now been revealed that the winning bidder is none other than Gearbox. Scooping the rights in the wake of Thq's collapse, Gearbox intends to bring the series back for a new generation of fans.
A Gearbox statement read, “Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from Thq. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software's Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic's brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition.

Gearbox and Sega recently invited us to Dallas, Texas to check out the progress on their upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines title, and we weren’t sure what to expect. But, our expectations were raised pretty high when we got to the venue which was accessed by a creaky cargo elevator (shades of Ripley fleeing from the Alien Queen) and dense fog covering the ground, only to be brought up face to face with the actual Alien Queen from the film, which was on loan for the event by 20th Century Fox.
Announced several years ago, and finally seen at last year’s E3, Aliens: Colonial Marines looked fairly impressive, but it was hard to ignore the gaping maw of suck that has claimed nearly every other video game adaptation of a movie. With a franchise this iconic that has hardcore fans, Gearbox was walking on...

Yeah, we know. The news that Aliens: Colonial Marines's release was pushed back to fall bummed us out, too, but on the plus side Gearbox Software's CEO Randy Pitchford revealed many interesting new facts about the upcoming title in a recent interview with the PlayStation Blog.
One important revelation was that Aliens: Colonial Marines will be a gritty and realistic aim down the scopes shooter, contrary to what the marketing campaigns and trailers may have led you to believe. In addition, Gearbox Software is placing strong emphasis on the multiplayer mechanics of the game and even plans to bring in outside sources to perfect this aspect. You can find out more in the excerpts below, including how the game will tie in with the new film Prometheus and how you can become a tester for the game.

Sadly, Aliens: Colonial Marines was recently delayed until later this year, but that isn’t too bad considering how long the game has been development. During a recent interview, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford talked about the delay, Prometheus, and taking us back to Lv-426:
PlayStation.Blog: Aliens: Colonial Marines was recently confirmed to be a fall 2012 title. How will the game’s new fall 2012 release date benefit the final product?
Randy Pitchford, CEO, Gearbox Software: Aliens: Colonial Marines has been a dream project – a labor of love. We’re fully committed to our vision for the game. Creating deadlines is helpful to the process, but we do regret where it creates expectations that cause us to choose between changing expectations or compromising the vision.
Psb: Are you excited to see Prometheus? Will any of the Space Jockey lore hinted at in the film make it into Aliens: Colonial Marines?...

We were lucky enough to bypass the line and check out the new Aliens: Colonial Marines game that promises to be a true sequel to the first films at E3 today. Vetted by Fox with amazing graphics, you feel like you're in the game. This is Xenomorph killing at it's finest. We were shown a demo by a Gearbox Software representative who was more excited about the game than anyone I've ever heard. Here's what he had to say. .I'm freaking out! I got to make an Aliens game! I have been stealing from Aliens my entire career! I finally have the real thing here. I'm not kidding. One of the other Gearbox founders, Brian Martel and I...we had met each other and worked with each other at 3D Realms, and we were working on Duke Nukem. There were face huggers in the game, and all the...
