They really went and did it!! Crazy. Central Partnership has unveiled an official trailer for a Russian space movie called The Challenge (in English), made by filmmaker Klim Shipenko. This is the very first film to ever actually shoot in space for real. They've been talking about this for years, a Hollywood pipedream that Russian pulled off first (similar to the space race in the 50s/60s). Tom Cruise still has his own project in space in the works. This Russian director and his lead actress flew up to space in October 2021, and filmed for a few weeks. The story follows a female surgeon who has to perform an operation on a cosmonaut too ill to return to Earth. There will only be about 30-40 minutes of actual space footage in the film, the rest was shot (on ground) in studios and at real locations. Вызов stars Yulia Peresild, Miloš Biković,...

The wrapping suggests something more prestigious: a period drama that examines class and the violent lengths people would go to to preserve honor in the 19th century, perhaps. Set in amongst the gold-encrusted ballrooms and mud-slopped streets of Tsarist St. Petersburg, Alexey Mizgirev’s The Duelist is the tale of Yakovlev (Pyotr Fyodorov), a loner nobleman and former soldier who duels other high society-dwellers for cash. Yakovlev isn’t quite who he claims to be, however, a fact that brings the power-hungry Count Beklemishev (played by sometime Hollywood baddie-for-hire Vladimir Mashkov) and young debutante Princess Marfa (Yuliya Khlynina) into his orbit.
It could be the synopsis for an old-fashioned epic, but in reality, The Duelist is a handsomely-mounted Russian soap in period clothing, complete with dubious plotting, thin characterization and beautiful cardboard stars. The film is also strangely juvenile for one so carefully sculpted. From the first scene, wherein Yakovlev...

I'd never heard of The Duelist before, but Sony Pictures has just unveiled a full trailer for the upcoming foreign film that looks pretty damn cool. It's set in 1800s Russia and follows an incredibly effective gunfighter who stands in as a duelist for nobles whose honor is slighted by others. But things take a turn when he falls for the sister of a young prince.
This movie looks crazy expensive, with some gorgeous sweeping landscape shots and rad-looking costumes, and it feels a little like a cross between a period romance and an almost steampunk-style take on something like The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm interested to hear what you all think about this trailer.
The Duelist is written and directed by Alexey Mizgirev, and it stars Petr Fedorov, Vladimir Mashkov, Martin Wuttke, Julia Khlynina, Yuri Kolokolnikov, and Franziska Petri. It hits theaters on December 2, 2016.

"You've died so many times. You will never die again." Well, this looks crazy cool. Sony Pictures Russia has debuted a trailer for a big-budget Russian adventure movie called The Duelist, directed by indie filmmaker Alexey Mizgirev. A few moviegoers might've seen the WWII action movie Stalingrad a few years back, as it was released in IMAX by Sony. This is Sony's latest Russian feature that they're be releasing to Us audiences in IMAX even though no date has been set yet. The Duelist is about a vengeful duelist who never loses. The cast includes Pyotr Fyodorov (Stalingrad), Vladimir Mashkov (Ghost Protocol), Yuri Kolokolnikov (Game of Thrones), and Martin Wuttke (Inglorious Basterds). This seems dark and epic and very violent. Here's the official trailer for Alexey Mizgirev's The Duelist, direct from Sony Pictures Russia's YouTube: An adventure film, with dramatic and thriller elements set against the backdrop of palaces and...

Russian helmer Alex Mizgiryov caught our attention back in December with the first teaser for his upcoming period set action film Duelist (Дуэлянт). Telling the tale of an 1800's roaming duelist-for-hire that first teaser was slick, stylish, and enormously entertaining stuff. And it has now been followed by a full trailer that is even moreso. Pyotr Fyodorov (The Darkest Hour) Vladimir Mashkov (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Behind Enemy Lines), Martin Wuttke (Cloud Atlas, Inglourious Basterds) and Yuri Kilokolnikov (The Transporter Refueled) all star and we can only hope that this one turns up on the festival circuit soon. Check out the trailer below. [Thanks to Sergey for the tip!]...

31 projects were presented by nine Russian production houses at a pitching to the Russian Cinema Fund.
Russia’s answer to Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity and an updated, Russian-set adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost were among the 31 film projects presented by nine Russian production houses - the so-called ‘leaders’ - at a pitching to the Russian Cinema Fund (Rcf) this week.
An expert committee gave each of the 31 projects a rating, but the final decision on how much production support - and whether it is a subsidy or conditionally repayable loan - will be decided by the Rcf later in the year.
Sergey Selyanov’s St Petersburg-based Ctb is behind the “first Russian space thriller”, Salyut 7, which would be based on the true story of the rescue mission for the orbital station in 1985. The film is budgeted at RUB320m and Ctb is looking to receive RUB150m from the Cinema Fund.

With Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol hitting DVD and Blu-ray this week courtesy of Paramount, we sat down with some of the cast to talk about their experiences on the film, working with Tom Cruise, and just what it takes to be an Imf agent. We’ve already brought you an interview with Paula Patton and Simon Pegg, and now it’s the turn of Vladimir Mashkov who plays Russian agent Anatoly Sidorov.
Did you see the previous installments in the franchise? Can you call yourself a fan?
I saw all the films. My favorite is part three, directed by J.J. Abrams. It is very impressive. It’s a wonderful amalgam of different genres performed by talented actors and meeting the audience’s expectations. Part four goes even further, throwing more genres into the mix: it combines action, adventure, thriller, and comedy. The film is loaded with humor which, in my opinion,...

What some people consider one of the highlights of 2011 is finally heading to DVD/Blu-ray. I’m clearly in the minority when it comes to Brad Bird‘s action-packed installment in the popular Mission: Impossible series. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol isn’t necessarily a bad film (you can read my Full Review Here), it just isn’t as fun or entertaining as you would think a 133 minute film full of gadgets, explosions, and car chases should be. How it landed on some people’s ‘Ton Ten of 2011′ lists is beyond me. Though I will admit that the opening sequence and Ethan’s scaling of a high-rise hotel building in Dubai, the centerpiece of the film, are worth at least a rental. So when will you be able to see these stunning sequences in HD? Ethan Hunt’s forth mission will be arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on April 17.

Odds are if you visited a movie theater recently, you might have been there to see Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol or War Horse. The former has been deservedly sitting atop the box office charts since its release and the latter is the latest, tear-jerker live-action drama from one of our most beloved filmmakers, Steven Spielberg. And while the fact they're both currently playing in theaters is more or less the only thing the films have in common, both are undoubtedly improved by their sound and score. John Williams' score to War Horse is one of his best in many years. It perfectly compliments the sweeping story of how a single animal can bring out the best in people at the worst of times. With Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, director Brad Bird and his team use not only Michael Giacchino's score, but a steady barrage of sound,...

Yet another clip from Brad Bird’s “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”, featuring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner chasing trains at night. Hey, it’s all part of the job of a super duper globe-hoppin’ secret agent. Plus, it’s probably kinda fun, too, I bet. Blamed for the terrorist bombing of the Kremlin, Imf operative Ethan Hunt is disavowed along with the rest of the agency when the President initiates “Ghost Protocol”. Left without any resources or backup, Ethan must find a way to clear his agency’s name and prevent another attack. To complicate matters further, Ethan is forced to embark on this mission with a team of fellow Imf fugitives whose personal motives he does not fully know. Also starring Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Samuli Edelmann, Ivan Shvedoff, Anil Kapoor, Léa Seydoux, Josh Holloway, and Miraj Grbic. It’s all aboard December 21, 2011. Clip from Tom Cruise starrer Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol called Outside. Brad Bird (The Incredibles) directs the action thriller from Paramount Pictures which opens on December 21st. Check out a new "Outside" clip joining our buffet of videos for the film which also stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Léa Seydoux, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov and Anil Kapoor. In this clip, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) isn't too keen to get "outside" as a way to get into the server room. I don't blame him with the objective beeing on the 130th floor and having nothing but some gloves to aid him. We now have over 20 videos available, which includes interviews with the cast and director, including the recent "Open the Door" clip with Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise. It’s not fun being Tom Cruise’s superspy Ethan Hunt. For one, you get all the tough jobs. Such as climbing a big ass tower in the middle of nowhere. I mean, damn, just looking at the last few seconds of this extended clip from director Brad Bird’s “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” gives me all kinds of fears of height. I admire Brad Bird! From .The Iron Giant. to .Ratatouille,. the director is a brilliant storyteller. This interview was done as a teaser interview prior to the release of .Mission Impossible . Ghost Protocol. aka .MI4.. We saw half-hour worth of clips, and from what I witnessed, this one will be a great .Mission Impossible. film!

How can the fourth film of the franchise be different from the other .Mission Impossible. movies?
Jumping from the animated world to the live-action world . how did Bird fulfill such nearly impossible mission?
What was his first edict when he was offered .Mission Impossible 4?.
Shooting in IMAX
Working with Tom Cruise
