On Oct. 26, 1982, NBC introduced St. Elsewhere to TV audiences. The ensemble medical drama went on to run for six seasons on the network. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review, as included in a TeleVisions column, is below:
Passing in Review: St. Elsewhere (NBC, Tuesday, 10-11 p.m.) The critics are having a field day. “Well written,” they’ve called it. “Touching.” “Gritty.” And a variety of other words and phrases all meant to tell us that St. Elsewhere, the new hour-long slice-of-life medical drama on NBC, is topnotch television. They’ve compared it to that other prized hour of TV drama, Hill Street Blues. And well they should. Both come from Mtm Enterprises, and both have a similar type of stark realism base which at once repels and attracts — like much of reality. While Hill Street gets its story lines and plots from police life,...

John Falsey, the co-creator with Joshua Brand of the groundbreaking St. Elsewhere, Northern Exposure, I’ll Fly Away, and writer of other classics of the 1980s and ’90s, died Jan. 3 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was 67.
Falsey’s death was announced to The New York Times by brother James Falsey, who said the cause of death was complications of a head injury sustained in a fall at home.
Nominated for 11 Emmy Awards, Falsey shared three wins with Brand, the first in 1987 for A Year in the Life, which won the outstanding mini-series trophy. The second and third followed in 1992, when Northern Exposure was named outstanding dramatic series and I’ll Fly Away took the best writing award for its pilot episode.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Falsey was a story editor for CBS’ The White Shadow starring Ken Howard; Brand was a writer on the show. After that show ended,...

There are oodles of ways to end a TV series. Marriage! Death! Birth! Flashforward! It was all a dream! Ambiguous cut to black! In 1988, though, St. Elsewhere truly shook things up and gave us one of the most talked-about series finales in history with “the snow globe.” After watching six Emmy-nominated seasons of drama — medical and emotional, dark and light, envelope-pushing and heartstring-pulling — at the run-down St. Eligius, we were led to believe in the finale’s last scene that the entire show was actually a product of the imagination of (construction worker?) Donald Westphall’s autistic son, who was...

Chicago – The popular cable TV series “HawthoRNe” throws down a dramatic Season 3 premiere, featuring the star talents of Jada Pinkett Smith and a great supporting cast. The medical series returns on TNT Network on June 14th.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is a “throw the kitchen sink at it” premiere, chock full of surprises, soap operatic turns and strong performances from a well seasoned cast. Jada Pinkett Smith is the rock solid centerpiece as Christina Hawthorne, Chief Nursing Officer at an action-packed hospital. The series continues its focus on the relationships within the ensemble, including the romance between Christina and Dr. Tom Wakefield (Michael Vartan).
At the end of the second season, Christina finds out she is pregnant by Dr. Tom, and the third chapter opens with their nuptials. In the context of all medical dramas, there is an accident nearby that interrupts the vows, but the team is there to take care of the situation.

Exclusive: I hear TNT tomorrow will announce a 10-episode Season 3 pickup for the Sony TV-produced medical drama starring Jada Pinkett Smith. With The Closer, Rizzoli, Leverage, Memphis Beat and now Hawthorne all getting renewed, the only TNT summer series waiting its fate is Jerry Bruckheimer's cop drama Dark Blue. While attracting about half of the audience of TNT's Monday juggernauts The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles, Hawthorne has been a solid performer ratings-wise, with its audience averaging 3.4 million viewers. What's more, it was used to successfully launch a new series this summer, the off-beat Memphis Beat. The renewal for the quirky cop show starring Jason Lee has been in the works for awhile, so I won't be surprised if TNT announces the pickups of Hawthorne and Memphis Beat together the way it announced the renewals of its Monday dramas in one release in July. Hawthorne is executive produced by creator John Masius,...

"Hawthorne" executive producer Glen Mazzara has been named showrunner for the upcoming second season of the TNT medical drama starring Jada Pinkett Smith.
The series' creator/executive producer John Masius, who ran the first season, will continue on the Sony TV-produced show as exec producer.
The move was initiated by Masius, who wants to focus on writing, the part of making a TV show that he enjoys the most and that has earned him nine Emmy nominations and two wins. He will continue to be involved in the oversight of the series with Mazzara.
Before joining "Hawthorne," Mazzara served as executive producer/showrunner on the first season of Starz's drama series "Crash."
Along with Adam Fierro, Mazzara was recently hired by Columbia to write a sequel to the Will Smith-starring "Hancock."
Mazzara, whose series credits also include "The Shield" and "Life," is repped by CAA.

For our final class of our EW University course on TV Auteurs, Prof. Jennifer Armstrong is back to address the lack of diversity in our list, and in the TV industry as a whole. Aaron Sorkin, Aaron Spelling, Joss Whedon, J.J. Abrams: All great auteurs, with distinct voices and visions, who left indelible marks on television. All genuinely brilliant in their own ways. All deserving of auteur status. And, of course, all white men. When we assembled our list of TV visionaries to discuss in this EW U course, there was no arguing with the names we chose. We could’ve added a few more –- a David E. Kelley or a Seth MacFarlane or a Chuck Lorre -– but, guess what! Those are still more white men. Distinctive talents, sure. But when it comes to offering a broad range of perspectives, television still lags behind, you know, real life.

Probably not the best time to launch a medical drama based around a plucky and opinionated nurse. After all, Showtime just last week launched Nurse Jackie, its own series about, you got it, a plucky and opinionated nurse in a comedy series that's intelligent, gripping, and utterly unforgettable. The same, sadly, can't be said for TNT's Hawthorne (I flat out refuse to capitalize the Rn--for registered nurse, natch--in the series' title), which launches tonight on the cabler. Created by John Masius (St. Elsewhere, Dead Like Me), Hawthorne pales in comparison to the similarly-themed Nurse Jackie. It also tries to take a more serious tack with its handling of professional nurses than the Edie Falco-led Showtime series and yet feels all the more tired and staid as a result. Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix) stars here as Christina Hawthorne, the widowed Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity hospital who has...

Chicago – TNT’s medical drama “HawthoRNe” would have felt overly generic in any month of the year, but debuting in the same one as Showtime’s far darker, subtler and more entertaining “Nurse Jackie” does the show no favors at all. Jada Pinkett Smith executive-produces and stars in a well-intentioned program with a good pedigree (John Masius of “St. Elsewhere” is one of the producers) but one that feels like a relic of a bygone era of more manipulative television.

On hand to pitch his new TNT cop drama "Dark Blue" to media buyers Wednesday, Dylan McDermott posed a hypothetical question that could prove the underlying theme for the 2009 upfront.
"How long can you pretend to be something before you become it?" McDermott asked onstage at the Turner upfront presentation. And while he was referring to his character, a two-fisted undercover cop, the actor might as well have been talking about his new home network.
TNT has spent the past few years trying to erase the distinction between broadcast and cable television. To hammer home the point that it functions as a sixth broadcast network, the cabler scheduled its upfront in the heart of the broadcast upfront week and packed it with A-list talent.
TNT unveiled a drama slate that includes projects from Steven Spielberg, Steven Bochco, "Roseanne" creator Matt Williams and the husband-and-wife team of Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon.

Bittersweet. Wholly bittersweet. Dead Like Me: Life After Death presents fans of the original series with a quandary. What is Dead Like Me without Rube (Mandy Patinkin)?
The new Dead Like Me feature film, reprising the plot of the ill-fated television series, answers that question but in a way that most fans will find lacking. By most accounts, getting 70% of an original cast back together 5 years after it ended (quite abruptly, I might add) would seem like a dream come true. Did we notice Laura Harris, who played Daisy Adair, was replaced by Sarah Wynter? You bet your ass we did. Did we care as much? No. What really gets at us - eats at us - is the void left by Rube's absence. Sure, they play it off decently well in the story but you can't replace the grounding character of...

Hollywood actress Jada Pinkett Smith is heading back to television with a starring role in TNT's drama pilot "Time Heals". On Jada's involvement, senior vice president in charge of the Content Creation Group for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies Michael Wright said, "John Masius has created a beautifully drawn character, and we couldn't have wished for a better choice to play her than Jada. TNT has given the green light to "Time Heals," a drama pilot from Emmy-winning writer-producer John Masius.
Produced by Sony Pictures TV, the project centers on Nancy Hawthorne, the strong but caring director of nursing at Charlotte Mercy Hospital in North Carolina, a single mother who always puts the pain of others first.
Masius penned the script and is executive producing the pilot with Spt-based producer Jamie Tarses.
With a strong female character at the center of a classic procedural, "Time Heals" follows in the footsteps of TNT crime dramas "The Closer" and "Saving Grace."
"Time Heals" joins TNT's recently ordered pilot "Night and Day" -- a gritty drama about an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms from Joel Surnow and Todd Robinson -- as well as Ray Romano's buddy drama pilot "Men of a Certain Age," which is about to begin production.
Next for the cable network is the premiere of Steven Bochco's legal drama "Raising the Bar" on Labor Day.
Endeavor-repped Masius, who won an Emmy for his work on "St. Elsewhere," created such series as "Touched by an Angel" and "Providence." He most recently worked on Showtime's "Dead Like Me."...

Life is over for the series Dead Like Me, which Showtime has canceled after two seasons, according to sources. The afterlife drama from MGM TV was denied a third batch of episodes by Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt, who is mulling his options among a new crop of drama pilots. Dead premiered last year on the premium cable channel to relatively strong ratings and some critical acclaim. But a second season this year fell short of the buzz it generated in its first outing. Executive produced by John Masius and Bryan Fuller, Dead stars Mandy Patinkin and Ellen Muth. The end of Dead could be a signal that Greenblatt wants to clear some room on the schedule for more than one of the new pilots he is considering for series treatment. Among the contenders are terrorist drama The Cell and the cop drama Hate. A decision is expected next month.

A remake of The Courtship of Eddie's Father, a medical drama from writer-producer John Masius and the Miss Wannabe Beauty Pageant special are among the highlights of the development slate at Gavin Polone's Pariah Television. The bulk of Pariah's series projects -- eight for broadcast networks and three for cable -- are being developed through the company's rich production pact with NBC. Moreover, Pariah has signed development pacts with talent ranging from such writers as Pulitzer prize-winner David Mamet, John Riggi, Nell Scovell and David Steinberg to magicians Penn and Teller. Polone has recruited Wally Wolodarsky ("The Tracey Ullman Show") to serve as showrunner on another Pariah adaptation, the Americanization of the hit BBC 2 comedy The Kumars at No. 42, which recently landed at NBC with a sizable put pilot commitment after a heated bidding war with Fox (HR 7/30). The show's unconventional format blends sitcom and talk-show elements. In addition to Kumars, Pariah is developing three other projects for NBC: dramas The Calling, from The Sopranos writer-producer Frank Renzulli; "Nevada," from writer Walon Green; and an untitled comedy from writer Lona Williams.
