After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, and the opening sequence of Pitch Black, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a moment from the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here) – which isn’t just getting a 4K release for its 30 anniversary. It’s also getting a remake.

Yesterday, we saw the first images of what Bill Skarsgard of the It films is going to look like as goth rocker Eric Draven in director Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) remake of the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here). There weren’t a lot of positive reactions, with many fans comparing Skarsgard’s look – which Sanders said was a mixture of his own look in the ’90s, “when we were squat-raving in London,” with modern influences like Post Malone and Lil Peep – to Jared Leto’s poorly-received version of The Joker in Suicide Squad. One person who took to social media to blast the look of the new Eric Draven was Alex Proyas, who directed the ’94 version of The Crow.
Sharing one of the images, Proyas said, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks.” In the comments, he continued to mock the look:...

We recently heard that Lionsgate has picked up the distribution rights to the reboot of the classic film The Crow (get it Here), which was released by Miramax back in 1994. Before Miramax acquired it, The Crow had originally been set up at Paramount. They decided to let go of it due to the controversy surrounding the on-set death of star Brandon Lee and the amount of violence in the film. So when Paramount acquired Miramax back in 2020, gaining the rights to The Crow in the process, it was like the film had gone full circle. It came back to Paramount. Recently, cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, mentioned a 4K restoration of The Crow would be on the Paramount Plus streaming service soon. While it hasn’t hit streaming yet, Blu-Ray.com announced that the 4K Blu-ray is set to come out on May 7th to mark the film’s 30th anniversary.

Even in 1995, it was easy to snicker at Iain Softley's computer-centric cyber-thriller "Hackers." Firstly, because computer technology is so complex, and develops so quickly, any mention of modern cyber-gear would definitely be dated only a year later. Actual computer experts saw right through Softley's and screenwriter Rafael Moreu's attempts at being cutting edge.
Additionally, Softley was presented with an interesting problem. While computer hackers occupied an exciting new technological subculture in 1995, people sitting at keyboards weren't very cinematically dynamic. Softley solved this problem by turning computer usage into something a little more abstract, using glowing animations, swirling cameras, and projecting images onto his actors' faces to make his film visually interesting.
Softley also had to more or less create his own version of hacker culture from the ground up. He dressed his teen protagonists in complex neo-punk garb and invented their own patois. He assembled a glorious three-volume...

The film stars Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker as Russell Poole and Jack Jackson, respectively. The latter, an equally as seasoned reporter who is digging deeper in the case for his newspaper’s anniversary retrospective about the murders. [To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Check here for more double feature recommendations and other Halloween 2017 coverage.]
In horror movies, things usually go so very wrong on October 31st when it comes to the Halloween-themed offerings of the genre. But what about the night before? October 30th, or “Devil’s Night”, can also bring about its own horrific consequences, which is the theme I went with when it came time to put together my double feature of Alex Proyas’ The Crow and Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses. Both are coincidentally feature film debuts for each director, they feature killer soundtracks, and this pair of films is also centered around a storyline where the characters will never be the same after their experiences on the night before Halloween.
Based on the comic by James O'Barr, The Crow finds aspiring rock star Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) rising from the grave a year after his death to take revenge on the four thugs (David Patrick Kelly, Angel David,...

The movie skids through the streets of New York City to follow a group of young hackers as they attempt to thwart the unleashing of a dangerous computer virus as they are tailed by the secret service and the evil tech genius who developed it. Blazing a trail in 1995, Hackers tackled web culture on screen before the internet really took off. The cyber-thriller helped kick-start the career of a major Hollywood A-lister and swiftly became a cult classic thanks to its Hacker Manifesto.
As Hackers celebrates its 20th birthday today (September 15), here's what happened to the six stars who made up the cyber-punk crew.
Angelina Jolie
Hackers handle: Acid Burn
In 1995, Jolie was a fast-rising 20-year-old actress with Cyborg 2 and some big music videos (including Meat Loaf, Lenny Kravitz and The Lemonheads) on her CV. New York Times critic Janet Maslin was non too plussed about Jolie's performance, saying of her character: "Kate stands out. That's because she scowls even more sourly than [her co-stars] and is that rare female hacker who sits intently at her keyboard in a see-through top."

Gotham, Season 1, Episode 20: ‘Under the Knife’
Written by John Stephens
Directed by Tj Scott
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
The search for the serial killer known as The Ogre continues with Gordon on edge, convinced that his loved one, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, may be in imminent danger. This turns out to be a very clever misdirect that brings Barbara back into the main story. The episode’s most interesting development comes when The Ogre realizes the truth and is left to consider whether or not he should kill her. At this point Barbara is so deep in her self loathing that The Ogre actually begins to see her as a romantic candidate instead of a simple victim, which makes this possibly the strangest meet-cute on television. The possibility that Barbara could be another contender for his affections really livens up the Ogre storyline as does the oddly...

Watch a new clip called "The House" from Brad Furman's Runner Runner, starring Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake and Gemma Arterton. Written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the thriller also includes Anthony Mackie, David Costabile, Ben Schewarz, Oliver Cooper, Bob Gunton, Sam Palladio, Laurence Mason and Dayo Ojeniyi. I am very curious about this one, considering director Furman's outstanding work on The Lincoln Lawyer; a strong crime thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Ryan Phillippe, William H. Macy, Marisa Tomei and Josh Lucas. Princeton grad student Richie (Justin Timberlake), believing he’s been swindled, travels to Costa Rica to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Ben Affleck). Ajai's Stitch is another surreal entry into the horror genre. This title stars Edward Furlong and Shawna Waldron. Together, these two play a couple who head onto a healing retreat, after the death of their young daughter. Then, Marsden (Furlong) and Serafina (Waldron) find themselves trapped in a bizarre landscape by a maniacal shaman as seen in the film's first trailer. Horror fans can view the clip inside. The reel uses CGI effects to create a state of unreality, which the characters struggle against. Supernatural forces are at work in this early trailer for Stitch. Director/writer: Ajai. Cast: Edward Furlong, Shirly Brener, Shawna Waldron, Laurence Mason, Diane Salinger, Tiffany Martin, and Douglas Tait. It is hard to not enjoy a film, which uses ‘Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City’ by Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland in the starting titles. The song sets a high bar and the film clears it-something of a feat considering it stars Matthew (Mahogany) McConaughey. This is definitely worth a second look and if you have not seen it before, translates well on to the small screen.
The beginning of the film finds Mick Haller (McConaughey) go about his business and is there to very quickly determine our impressions of the main characters. Haller is sharp, businesslike and comfortable with complexity and with getting the most for himself. We see him interact with clients (Ryan Phillippe), colleagues (William H. Macy, Laurence Mason), his ex-wife (Marisa Tomei) and associates and we can understand this man has a past. A

What do you get when you combine a successful book franchise with: a star everyone thinks they know, a stellar supporting cast, a television writer adapting, and a young director making his second feature? Apparently, one of the tightest, sleekest, and most satisfying thrillers in years. A minor box office success, The Lincoln Lawyer deserves to be seen, heralded, and franchised. And that’s not true of most films that reach such an enviable level.

In the gripping thriller “The Lincoln Lawyer,” Matthew McConaughey stars as Michael “Mick” Haller, a slick, charismatic Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Continental sedan. Having spent most of his career defending petty criminals, Mick unexpectedly lands the case of a lifetime: defending a rich Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) who is accused of attempted murder. However, what initially appears to be a straightforward case with a big money pay-off swiftly develops into a deadly match between two masters of manipulation and a crisis of conscience for Haller.

Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is not your average lawyer. He cruises the streets of Beverley Hills in his mobile office; a sleek and stylish Lincoln and is accompanied by his feel-good chauffeur Earl (Laurence Mason). Things, however quickly start to unravel out of Mick's charismatic control when he takes on a wealthy new client Louis (Ryan Philippe). Grand legal auto; damn this film is smooth. It makes me want to go out and order some type of spirit, neat of course. The pacing initially plays out like a procedural but with a definite twist that leads into film territory and makes it anything but your generic evening crime drama. It is tightly wound and controlled by director Brad Furman to the point that there...

As the classic soul song “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City” plays over the opening credits of The Lincoln Lawyer, the perfect tone is set for the movie. At its core, it’s a classical lawyer procedural thriller, but is smoothly played by its star and large cast so much so that you can’t help but be entertained for two hours. It’s a movie where the title explains it all. Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey, looking little older, but still with some breezy cool swagger) is a high profiled La defense lawyer who works out of his Lincoln Town Car. As he wheels and deals throughout the day with his driver Earl (Laurence Mason), we meet the various lawyers, bail bonds men, private investigators, celebrity drug addicts, and gang members that he works with. Some of them love him, but most have some sort of card to play with him. The...

The Lincoln Lawyer is - surprisingly - even better than the previews made it look - and the previews looked pretty good. The story, starring Hollywood heavy weights Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Phillipe, is compelling; the actors make this film relevant and interesting from start to finish.
McConaughey is known for playing slick, smooth, and charming leading men, and The Lincoln Lawyer is no exception. He is a sleazy attorney who seems to be in the biz just for the cold hard cash, but there's a soft side to this smooth-talking defense lawyer and McConaughey nails both sides of this character.
The Plot:
The Lincoln Lawyer centers around criminal defense lawyer Mick Haller. Haller is known for keeping criminals on the streets by getting them off the hook - for a price. He does all his business out of the back of an old Lincoln town car, with the occasional...

'The Lincoln Lawyer' makes it clear from the start that we're miles -- or at least zip codes -- away from most buttoned-up courtroom dramas. Defense attorney Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) uses the backseat of his old Lincoln as a makeshift office as his driver Earl (Laurence Mason) takes him back and forth across town to appointments. Some of Mick's meetings are conducted curbside, such as when a gang of bikers forces his car aside for a quick chat about a friend in the clink. Smooth as butter, Mick doubles his price and weighs the envelope of cash in his hand, thanks the leader of the pack and puts the envelope in his suit jacket.
"Aren't you going to count it?" asks the biker.
"I just did," says Mick with that famous McConaughey grin, and the deal is done. The town car moves smoothly back into traffic,...

Trust me, I'm confused too.
I had practically written off McConaughey as done, meaning he wasn't going to have a worthwhile role that didn't put him as the male lead in a forgetful romance movie. Then he goes and does something like The Lincoln Lawyer, and I wonder where the hell this guy has been for the past decade.

Having spent most of his career defending petty, gutter-variety criminals, Mick unexpectedly lands the case of a lifetime: defending a rich Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) who is accused of attempted murder. However, what initially appears to be a straightforward case with a big money pay-off swiftly develops into a deadly match between two masters of manipulation and a crisis of conscience for Haller.
Watch the clip after the jump and tell us what you think.

In a convoluted game of cat-and-mouse, Matthew McConaughey stars as an attorney who finds himself in a case that is anything but ordinary in The Lincoln Lawyer. Apparently, we have a case of a lawyer getting in too deep, and while not the biggest McConaughey fan on the block, this one looks intriguing, and has the supporting cast to give it a boost of watchability.
Unfortunately, the trailer doesn't give us enough of William H. Macy, or John Leguizamo, and the action we get is put together a little too fast and furious, but considering the source, I suppose we are meant to get the general idea rather quickly. Check the trailer, and let me know your thoughts. Can McConaughey pull off such a role? Are you going to be keeping an eye out for this one?

Set in a backwoodsy Adirondack town not far from the Canadian border, independent John G. Young's debut feature "Parallel Sons" is so sincere and lyrically romantic that one keeps hoping for more compelling drama than it actually delivers.
Opening today at the Nuart for a one-week engagement, the Greycat Films release bowed at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival and has gone on to win awards at other fests. Business will be limited primarily to gay audiences, who may be drawn by the white-guy-meets-black-man love story.
Seth (Gabriel Mick, "I Shot Andy Warhol") sports dreadlocks and the most extensive rap music collection in his dreary hometown. He's a sensitive, downright angelic 20-year-old, gentle and multicultural, with dreams of attending art school in the Big City.
His no-nonsense, gunshop-owning father Graham Alex Johnson) is not happy with Seth's embracing modern black culture and neither is a snippy contemporary (Josh Hopkins), who hangs out at the diner where the lead works. Seth's boss (Maureen Shannon) is his biggest fan, but his lusty girlfriend (Heather Gottlieb) does not handle it well when she's rudely rebuffed for wanting to have sex with him.
The emotionally wounded girl is the daughter of mean Sheriff Mott (Murphy Guyer), who likes to bug the lead about his attire and attitude.
The real story kicks in when Seth confronts a robber in the diner late one night. Enter the bleeding Knowledge (Laurence Mason, "The Crow"), a virile black man in trouble -- and just what Seth has always dreamed of.
With a convenient cabin in the woods, away from his father's house, Seth nurses the initially abrasive Knowledge back to health. They soon reveal all their secrets, while falling in love and avoiding detection by the fink neighbors. Not surprisingly -- but effectively ending the film's chances at success -- Seth and Knowledge are forced to flee for their lives when one of them accidentally-on-purpose shoots the sheriff.
While the performances are palatable, with Mason and Julia Weldon as Seth's younger sister making the strongest impressions, writer-director Young can't resist pouring on the tragic developments, and one is summarily bummed at the outcome. Some will be moved, but the film plays with a loaded deck of cliches that undermine its noble intentions.
