After three decades of eligibility where he didn’t appear on a single ballot, Peter Frampton was starting to think he’d never be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But once voters finally had to chance to select him earlier this year, things changed very quickly. He learned the good news over the weekend when his manager phoned him up to say he made it. “I was absolutely blown away,” Frampton says. “My mind has been sort of a blur ever since I found out, especially...

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artistes who will be inducted in 2024. According to ‘Variety’, the diverse list includes R&b/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton, pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, as well as 1970s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner, and Ozzy Osbourne, alongside 1990s icons such as the Dave Matthews Band and Mary J. Blige.
Jimmy Buffett’s inclusion among the inductees comes as a surprise. His entry is unexpected not only because the late singer/songwriter was not on the ballot this year but also because he had never been nominated before.
‘Variety’ reports that the Rock Hall’s committee, seemingly in a sentimental mood after Buffett’s passing seven months ago, chose to honour him via a separate, non-voted category for “musical excellence”.

Last week, the news that André 3000 would be releasing an album of instrumental flute jams was greeted with enough head-scratching to draw blood. Led Zeppelin was one of the most successful bands of the 1970s, but this didn’t do much to impress Eric Clapton. While Clapton believed that Led Zeppelin’s music was a natural continuation of what he’d done in Cream, he didn’t like the way they were carrying on his legacy. He shared why he found certain songs tough to listen to.

If there’s one song that sums up the stoic guitar genius of Peter Green, it’s “Jumping at Shadows,” recorded live in February 1970, at the Boston Tea Party. Green was on top of the world; a 23-year-old rock star leading the London band he founded, Fleetwood Mac. They were the toast of Britain, riding their Number One hit “Albatross.” But “Jumping at Shadows” is a doomy blues ballad, his voice full of wistful dread, his guitar full of delicate pain. “I’m going downhill and I blame myself,” he sings.

Original Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green kept an extremely low profile since leaving the band in 1970, and had been a virtual ghost during the past decade. For a February 25th tribute at the London Palladium, Mick Fleetwood assembled an incredible roster of talent to honor Green, including David Gilmour, Christine McVie, Steven Tyler, Bill Wyman, Billy Gibbons, John Mayall, and many others. His death was announced on July 25th at the age of 73.

Mick Fleetwood should be relaxing. He just wrapped up a 13-month world tour — Fleetwood Mac’s first since parting ways with Lindsey Buckingham and replacing him with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell and Crowded House frontman Neil Finn — but the 72-year-old drummer is already deep into planning his next project: a tribute concert to Peter Green, who co-founded Fleetwood Mac and wrote many of the group’s early classics before being sidelined by mental illness and addiction issues. The show is set for February 25th in London,...

Frieberg, who turns 80 today, is right; he’s not the only pop act still performing regularly in his eightieth year. From Frankie Valli and British blues stalwart John Mayall (both 84) to R&B veteran Sam Moore (82) to folkies like Peter Yarrow and Tom Paxton (both 80), Freiberg is joining a small, prestigious club. Lili Fini Zanuck’s painstaking account of the guitarist’s life ranges from his traumatic childhood through his battle with drugs and a racist outburst in the 70s to the tragic loss of his infant son
This long, patient documentary about the life and music of Eric Clapton often feels like a transcription of Job’s sufferings. Brought up in Surrey by a woman whom he finally discovered to be his grandmother, the teenage Clapton finally met his actual mother who had gone to Canada and who casually and devastatingly rejected him all over again.
His brilliance at the blues guitar made him a legend. But the great love of his life involved heartbreak and – perhaps almost as painfully – the infringement of the “bro code” of guitarists. He fell passionately for the beautiful Pattie Boyd, wife of his friend George Harrison. She at first chose Harrison over him, but then married Clapton,...

It's a sort of lopsided smile, almost like a child's-drawing version of what a grin is supposed to look like. Even more than the eyes and the jawline and that chin, which would later by framed by long Swingin' Sixties sideburns and covered by a ragged Seventies beard, it's the mouth of the kid in those early, black and white pictures that draws recognition. That's Eric Clapton's smile that the lad in the woolly jumper is sporting. And as he got older, even after he became famous and fans...

For many, the story of Fleetwood Mac begins with the 1974 arrival of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, the talented yet combustible American duo who ignited an explosive string of hits that continue to define the band. But Mick Fleetwood wants to move past those rumors. Fans of the group’s pop jewels would hardly recognize their original incarnation as one of the most respected British blues bands of the ’60s. Now the founding drummer is telling the tale of those formative years in Love That Burns: A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac, Volume One 1967–1974, a lavish new book by Genesis Publications due out Sept.

When it comes to British blues, all roads lead to John Mayall. As a multi-instrumentalist, he delivered a shot of pure Chicago-style directly to the heart of the nation’s capital, jumpstarting a movement that re-defined the genre. As a bandleader, he mentored some of the biggest names in rock history.
Having honed his craft backing Delta greats Johnny Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williams on their first English tours in the early 1960s, Mayall added his daring artistic spirit and amped-up wattage to his own band, the Bluesbreakers. The seminal group became a cornerstone of the burgeoning blues scene in London,...

I interviewed Pierce Brosnan in conjunction with his third outing as James Bond, in Michael Apted's The World Is Not Enough, in 1999. Brosnan was alternately charming, erudite, thoughtful and intense during our two hour chat. His native intelligence shone through it all, as did a sense of decency which many people seem to acquire after enduring and surviving hardship in their formative years.

There are several dangers in becoming a cultural icon, not the least of which is the stigma that your public will forever keep you imprisoned in the mold of your iconography, allowing the recipient a privileged, if imprisoned, existence, particularly if that person is an artist. Sean Connery faced just such a dilemma during the height of James Bond-mania in the mid-60's. A serious actor, Connery desperately wanted to break out of the action hero mold that was British Superspy James Bond,...

After the show, Walter took Norman to the West End, where Norman marveled at the broad beer selection. As they slowly worked their way through a small percentage of the fifty-plus on offer, Walter lamented how inferior college was making him feel.
"Screw that," rejoined Norman. "Just have fun and keep learning and next year's freshmen will feel inferior to you. If you already knew everything, you wouldn't have to go to college in the first place. Don't tell me about that, tell me about all the cool stuff you've been doing."
"Well, during orientation there was a great band playing outside for free called So What. I know you're not that into fusion, but they were hot.

Bassist Jack Bruce has passed on at the age of 71 of liver disease. No one lives forever, but he will always be best known for his power trio Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. I was fortunate enough to catch their reunion tour in 2005 at Madison Square Garden. I was blown away by Jack's bass playing and his strong vocals throughout. And this was a man who had survived liver cancer and a liver transplant just a few short years earlier. Certainly his legendary power trio was a tough act to follow, but Bruce has many albums in his discography both before and after his classic rock trio; not only with British blues bands such as Alexis Korner’s Blues Inc., the Graham Bond Organisation, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and Manfred Mann, but a robust solo career, too. And in 1994, in an effort to recreate the energy and excitement of Cream,...

The movie opened December 21 after a New York Film Festival launch. Is this movie commercial? No. But it's good. And it hits the Boomer demo head on. Did you listen to John Mayall and James Brown in high school? Remember when vinyl records were wrapped in plastic and people wore pea coats and grey suede Vegas boots? Then this movie is for you. Chase knows that it's thanks to his ex-manager Brad Grey, who runs Paramount now, that the Stanford film studies grad got to make this delicious and personal slice of authentic 60s life with just one recognizable star, Tony Soprano himself,...
