Graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1933.
Served as Assistant Secreatry of State under James F. Byrnes in 1945. Active as producer for 20th Century Fox, 1949 to 1962, and 1965 to 1972.
As the film's producer, he accepted George C. Scott's Oscar for Patton (1970) at the
awards ceremony, but returned it to the Academy the next day in keeping
with Scott's refusal to accept the award.
He was a retired brigadier general who served as an aide to General
George C. Marshall during World War II. He worked for nearly 20 years toward
producing a film biography of General George S. Patton.
Received the Army Distinguished Service Medal when he was a Colonel
assigned to the General Staff Corps.
His Oscar was (and still may be) displayed at The Marshall Foundation
on the campus of The Virginia Military Institute.
Held a Master's Degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Honours graduate, and, subsequently, teacher at the Virginia Military Institute. Worked as a reporter for The Richmond News Leader.
