Empire Pictures’ lovable cult classic creature feature Ghoulies went on to spawn a four-movie franchise that ended with 1994’s Ghoulies IV. That means we haven’t seen or heard from the franchise in almost 30 years, but the original creators are now determined to bring the tiny rubber monsters back to life – and it seems they’ve reclaimed the rights to be able to do it.
Director/Co-Writer Luca Bercovici and Producer/Co-Writer Jefery Levy have reclaimed the domestic rights to their 1984 cult classic film, a press release has informed us.
The plan? They want to “develop a new film trilogy for a new generation”!
We’ve been told that two of the scripts are already complete, with the third one halfway complete at the time of this article being published. “We are shopping it now and hoping to film in late Summer/Early Fall,” writer/producer Theo Lemasters tells Bloody Disgusting.

Jason Blum and James Wan have carved out a nice little partnership with some successful mid-budget horror movies. The two have collaborated with their production companies, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, for recent projects like the latest film in the Insidious series, which also had Patrick Wilson make his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door and the killer doll movie, M3GAN. Recently, it was revealed that Blum’s dream project is to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. The classic slasher series hasn’t released a film since the 2009 Platinum Dunes reboot.
The rights to Friday the 13th are currently tangled up with director Sean Cunningham and writer Victor Miller disputing who has the rightful possession, but Blum is brainstorming a way to usher in the new series if he’s able to acquire the property. Collider asked Blum what movie he’d greenlight right now if he could and he answered,...

Fourteen and a half months have gone by since it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. There haven’t been many updates since then… which isn’t surprising to fans of the Friday the 13th franchise, because we’ve gotten used to not getting any new content. But Crystal Lake might actually make it into production soon! Fridaythe13thFranchise.com reports that the show was once expected to start filming in March of 2024, but due to the writers and actors strikes that brought most projects...

A couple years ago, Marvel received copyright termination notices from comic book artist / writer Larry Lieber and the estates of fellow artists / writers Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and Don Rico that would have caused them to lose the sole copyrights to such characters as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and others, as well as titles like Amazing Fantasy, The Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Man, Journey Into Mystery, Marvel Super-Heroes, Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, and Tomb of Dracula. As reported in 2021, Marvel filed a series of lawsuits in response to those copyright termination notices. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that all of those lawsuits have been settled.
The termination notices targeted not just specific artwork and stories, but also “any character, story element, or indicia reasonably associated with the Works.” As The Hollywood Reporter explains,...

Dust Bunny: David Dastmalchian joins Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver in Bryan Fuller horror film
Actor David Dastmalchian has an impressive list of credits that includes Late Night With the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Oppenheimer, The Boogeyman, Dune, The Suicide Squad, the Ant-Man films, Blade Runner 2049, The Belko Experiment, Prisoners, and The Dark Knight, among many others. Now Collider reports that Dastmalchian has joined the cast of Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s family-oriented horror project Dust Bunny.
This project was announced last November, not long before we learned that Fuller is also working on a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake for franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Dust Bunny went into production earlier this year, with Hannibal himself Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver (Alien) in lead roles.

There's no disappointment quite as confusing as when a film gets canceled. It might happen suddenly, or become inevitable as a passion project suffers delay after delay. Then, when it does happen, it's usually because of shrouded problems behind the scenes or other powers beyond our control, like luck and timing. Suddenly, an exciting project ceases to exist. For hard-working artists and eager cinephiles alike, it's like a rug getting pulled.
Horror films are a unique breed, often made with tiny budgets and by the skin of their teeth. Not all of them are exceptional, but the genre is so boundless in its creative possibilities that any shelved project represents a lost vision. Stand-up comedian / actor Bill Burr just made his feature directorial debut with the Netflix-released comedy Old Dads (you can read the JoBlo review at This Link), which is cool and all… but here on Arrow in the Head, the horror side of the JoBlo Network, we’re more interested in hearing Burr’s opinions on horror films. That’s why it caught our attention when YouTuber James Whale Bake Sale made a video to go with a clip from Burr’s podcast Monday Morning Podcast in which the comedian discusses the horror classic Friday the 13th – and goes on to explain why he stopped watching horror movies.
The video can be seen at the bottom of this article, and over the course of its five minutes he admits that the final jump scare in Friday the 13th really did scare the hell out of him, says that the franchise...

It’s been nearly fifteen years since the last Friday the 13th movie, which, believe it or not, is the longest period between sequels in the entire franchise. The rights to Friday the 13th have been embroiled in a prolonged legal battle between original screenwriter Victor Miller and director/producer Sean S. Cunnigham, but audiences are hungry for Jason Voorhees to make his return. When Friday the 13th does finally return, Terrifier writer/director Damien Leone knows exactly what to do.
“I’ve been on record for quite some time now saying if I could ever remake one slasher film, it would be ‘Friday the 13th,'” Damien Leone told /Film. “Jason was always my favorite slasher since I was a little kid, and I think that there’s a way to … I mean, my approach would be to keep it in the ’80s, honestly. I would have it take place in the early ’80s.

Counting Ronny Yu's 2003 mash-up film "Freddy vs. Jason" and a remake in 2009, there have been twelve "Friday the 13th" movies to date. There would likely have been more by now -- poetically speaking, shouldn't there be at least 13 of them? -- but production on further sequels has been stymied by some complex litigation; Victor Miller, the original screenwriter of 1980's "Friday the 13th," has argued in court that a labyrinthine series of business transfers put the rights to the original movie back in his name, while producer/director Sean S. Cunningham asserts that his company owns the rights due to a 40-year-old work-for-hire contract. Until that dispute is settled, no further "Friday the 13th" movies are likely to be made.
That hasn't stopped ideas from being floated. Rumors have circulated for years about potential "Friday" sequels. The screenwriters of the 2009 remake wrote a direct sequel to their movie that was never made.

"Friday the 13th" wasn't originally intended to go on to manifest multiple murderous sequels featuring Jason Voorhees as a machete-wielding madman. The famed hockey mask didn't even make it into the films until "Friday the 13th Part III." No, the initial killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake was carried out by Jason's mother, Mrs. Pamela Voorhees, played by the illustrious Betsy Palmer.
Rather famously, Palmer wasn't exactly thrilled initially to be participating in a fairly low-rent horror film surrounded by young, up-and-coming starlets whose acting experience paled in comparison to her rather impressive filmography dating back to the Golden Age of television during the early '50s. The budget for the first "Friday the 13th" didn't really allow for a big marquee name, and Palmer wasn't even the first choice to play the role. Oscar winners Shelley Winters and Estelle Parsons were approached before Palmer eventually accepted the part after...

Friday the 13th: The Game was held back from reaching its full potential due to the copyright lawsuit between the original Friday the 13th‘s producer/director Sean S. It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.
Here’s the announcement:

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

On paper, the action and horror genres seem like they'd be strange bedfellows. After all, the general aim of action films is to provide adrenaline-fueled thrills, while horror movies are intended to disturb, scare, and unnerve.
Yet in practice, the genres blend far better and far more often than may be expected. I can still remember schoolyard chums excitedly recounting the ways in which Bruce Willis' John McClane dispatched terrorists in "Die Hard 2" (such as when he shoves an icicle into a baddie's eye), kills that would be wholly appropriate in a "Friday the 13th" or "A Nightmare on Elm Street" film. Hollywood producers certainly saw the connections; Renny Harlin, who directed "Die Hard 2," won the gig after making horror films like "Prison" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master."
In 2023, the action and horror genres have long been considered an excellent peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo, with much cross-pollination happening within them.

A Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Unfortunately, any progress the show was making has been put on hold during the writers strike – but earlier this year, Fuller assembled a writers room that spent six weeks brainstorming ideas and breaking down the scripts that will make up the first season of the series. Two of the writers in that room were author Tananarive Due, who has written multiple novels over the last thirty years and executive produced Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and her husband Steven Barnes, who is also an author and has also contributed scripts to shows like Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone. Yesterday, we were able to share some cool news about a Friday the 13th video game, as franchise composer Harry Manfredini says a new game is in the works. And now we have to share some news that I find to be a bit heartbreaking. Gun Interactive, the company behind the Friday the 13th: The Game that was released in 2017, has announced that their license to the Friday the 13th property will expire on December 31st, 2023.

The copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. But now that the copyright lawsuit has come to an end, franchise composer Harry Manfredini has revealed that a new video game is in development!

Cunningham from a screenplay by Victor Miller, Friday the 13th has the following synopsis: Crystal Lake’s history of murder doesn’t deter counselors from setting up a summer camp in the woodsy area. Superstitious locals warn against it, but the fresh-faced young people — Jack, Alice, Bill, Marcie, and Ned — pay little heed to the old-timers. Then they find themselves stalked by a brutal killer.

Just months after a "Friday the 13th" prequel series was announced at Peacock, there's more big news from the beloved hockey-mask-killer franchise. According to Bloody Disgusting, original film director Sean S. Cunningham is reportedly working on his own "Friday the 13th" reboot. The news comes via actor, producer, and screenwriter, Jeff Locker, who says he and director Jeremy Weiss pitched Cunningham their "dream reboot of 'Friday the 13th' — with Sean's blessing to keep developing it with him."
This news is surprising given that a high-profile legal battle between Cunningham and original "Friday the 13th" screenwriter Victor Miller has kept Jason Voorhees from the big screen for well over a decade now. The two men ended up embroiled in a lawsuit, with Cunningham's company Horror, Inc. going up against Miller, who their argument claimed was a hired employee and not an author entitled to script rights. When the copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came to an end, Miller was awarded with the U.S. copyright to the first film. Miller went on to team up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, A24, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, and Friday the 13th franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian – the last surviving investor in the original film – to start developing the “expanded prequel” / “pre-remake-quel” TV series Crystal Lake for the Peacock streaming service. Thanks to the involvement of both Miller and Barsamian, that series can use all elements from the entire Friday the 13th franchise. But Cunningham isn’t just walking away from the Friday the 13th business. Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting have learned that Cunningham is overseeing reboots of Friday the 13th and the 1985 horror comedy House (which he produced), while also producing an original film called The Night Driver!

Bloody Disgusting has uncovered a big time scoop to finish off the week, learning that Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th) is not only working to get his own Friday the 13th reboot off the ground, but he’s also developing a reboot of a horror movie he produced back in 1985, House. In addition, Cunningham is producing an original film titled The Night Driver, working alongside writer Jeff Locker and director Jeremy Weiss on the various upcoming projects.
Of course, the catch with all things Friday the 13th is that the franchise was up until recently mired in legal issues, with original screenwriter Victor Miller now joining forces with Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and A24 on a franchise prequel series for Peacock. That project is titled “Crystal Lake,” and Jeff Locker explains how a separate project could end up working.

Friday the 13th: The Game wasn’t the only Friday the 13th franchise-inspired game that had to stop creating content due to the copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller. That lawsuit also stopped puzzle game Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle from releasing new updates back in 2018. The lawsuit is over, Miller holds the copyright to the original Friday the 13th in the U.S. and is involved with the upcoming Peacock series Crystal Lake… but none of that has helped Killer Puzzle‘s developer Blue Wizard Digital keep their game going. They have announced that they weren’t able renew the Friday the 13th license with the licensors, so Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle will be delisted next week.

Everyone remembers the sensation of fear coursing through their veins the first time they ever heard the ominous whispering of "Ki ki ki, ma ma ma" in "Friday the 13th." The terrifying slasher from Victor Miller and Sean S. Cunningham spawned a massively popular franchise and inspired countless rip-offs, but few films can hold a candle to the unbridled terror found within the trees and cabins of Camp Crystal Lake. Now, horror maven Bryan Fuller is taking us back to camp with the upcoming A24 prequel series, "Crystal Lake."
The "Friday the 13th" franchise is comprised of 12 films, three seasons of a television series, novels, comic books, video games, and plenty of tie-in merchandise. While prequel stories have been told in the novels and comics, "Crystal Lake" will be the first time we see the story of what came before Jason Voorhees' untimely death during summer camp on screen — fully fleshed out.

Yesterday was Friday the 13th, so many fans of the Friday the 13th franchise spent the day anxiously checking the Internet, waiting to see if any news would drop about Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th TV series that’s coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. No official press releases were sent out – but Fuller did attend a 3D theatrical screening of Friday the 13th Part III last night, and participated in a Q&a with a couple of the stars of that film. And thankfully, he did reveal some new information about Crystal Lake during the Q&a!

The 1981 Indonesian movie Srigala is by no means known by the masses, but those in the loop about vintage and obscure Southeast Asian horror are aware of its existence for one reason. The director of the original Satan’s Slaves, once a steady provider of Indonesia’s homegrown horrors, joined the legion of eager filmmakers who set out to make their own slasher after watching the first Friday the 13th. However, Sisworo Gautama Putra did more than just borrow a concept — he lifted an entire ending.
Before Srigala (or “Wolf” in English) gets on with some of the most blatant copycatting in horror, Putra delivers a different movie for the first fifty minutes. The opening kill shows an unsuspecting scuba diver being gutted by an unseen assailant once he comes up to examine the small trinket he plucked from a large lake. Later, three fortune hunters arrive at the same doomed location,...

Given all the lawsuits surrounding the franchise, fans have been concerned that the upcoming “Friday The 13th” prequel series, “Crystal Lake,” from Bryan Fuller and A24 for Peacock, would be limited to what material it could use from the original 1980 film. Rights disputes between screenwriter Victor Miller and director Sean S. Cunnigham have been complicated and led to the franchise sitting in limbo for several years until now. And much to fan relief, to hear it from Fuller himself, there won’t be any roadblocks to using any elements of the “Friday The 13th” intellectual property.

Yesterday, Variety broke the mind-blowing news that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller is teaming with Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service to bring the world a Friday the 13th prequel TV series called Crystal Lake. Now Fangoria has caught up with Fuller to see what he can say about the show at this point. He couldn’t say a lot – but he could confirm that they can use anything they want from the entire Friday the 13th franchise, and he described the show as a “pre-remake-uel” rather than just a prequel.
Here’s what Fuller had to say about the rights situation: “We can use everything. We can go to Hell, we can go to space. That’s not to say that we will do those things … although if we do go 10 seasons, I...

Halloween came in red hot with horror announcements making the highest holiday for the strange and unusual into a full-on spooky feast. Of the many exciting drops that marked the scary season came the news that "Friday the 13th" was coming to the small screen. Yesterday, it was announced that Peacock gave a straight-to-series order to Bryan Fuller (along with A24) to create a prequel. This is a colossal announcement that comes after years of limbo since the rights to parts of the franchise have been trapped in legal hell. Now, with the most recent court decision out, and the rights split amongst entities, the outcome we've been begging for might finally have arrived.
The lawsuit surrounding the "Friday the 13th" franchise has been a frustrating saga for fans but an interesting one for legal junkies or anyone with a stake in franchise copyright. Essentially, a man named Victor Miller...

The horror world got some downright shocking news recently when it was revealed that the "Friday the 13th" franchise is finally coming back after well over a decade away. Bryan Fuller, of "Hannibal" fame, is developing a series for Peacock titled "Crystal Lake" that will serve as a prequel to the original 1980 horror classic. Presumably, the focus will be on Pamela Voorhees, Jason's mother, rather than the hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding slasher we all know and love.
While we won't get into the weeds here, the franchise has been held up by a lawsuit between "Friday the 13th" screenwriter Victor Miller and director Sean S. Cunningham, who heads up Horror Inc., the company that exists to handle all things related to the franchise. Miller was awarded rights to the script, but, rather crucially, that does not include Jason himself, who didn't show up as the main villain until the sequels and came to define the series.

Update: Variety originally noted that Victor Miller and Marc Toberoff “do not have the rights to use any elements of the films established after the original Friday the 13th, which includes Jason Vorhees’ trademark hockey mask, but are able to explore prequels as in the case of the Peacock series.” Their article has since been updated to add that Miller and Toberoff also hold non-exclusive foreign rights, and by bringing in Rob Barsamian – an investor in the original Friday the 13th who has a stake in the rest of the franchise – they will have access to any elements from the sequels they might want to use. So Sean S. Cunningham might not have any room to try to stop this project.

Happy campers? More like dying campers.
Just in time for Halloween, Peacock has announced that it has gone straight to series on Crystal Lake, a prequel drama based on the hit horror movie franchise, Friday the 13th.
Bryan Fuller, the prolific television creator behind such shows as American Gods and Star Trek: Discovery, will write, showrun and executive produce the series, which will be produced by A24, the studio known for buzzy movies such as Everything Everywhere All at Once and this year’s horror one-two punch, X and Pearl.
Friday the 13th is the horror franchise that launched in 1980 and gave the world Jason Voorhees, the hockey-masked slasher who mostly kills in and around the verdant and idyllic grounds of Camp Crystal Lake (except for the rare jaunt to New York or outer space).
