Members of the Directors Guild of America have until Friday to vote on their new contract, and those contacted this week by Variety were overwhelmingly voting yes.
In interviews, members noted the contract includes significant gains in residuals, creative rights, safety provisions and working hours.
But several also indicated that they have no interest in compounding Hollywood’s labor strife. Most directors and below-the-line DGA members have been out of work since the Writers Guild of America strike began on May 2.
“I’ve been around long enough that is a pretty good deal, and I’d like to get back to work,” said Matt Rebenkoff, who has worked as a first assistant director on “Don’t Look Up,” and “Jumanji: The Next Level.”
The sentiments expressed in interviews run counter to the prevailing mood on Twitter, where members have been urging a “no” vote. Opponents of the deal include prominent writer-directors such as Warren Leight,...

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.

The Purge Season 2 Episode 6
Nothing like a holiday break to get away from your troubles for a little while. Big meals with family, traveling, surveillance, armed assault teams, manhunts, and neighbors trying to have you killed. Just another Thanksgiving in the New America of the Nffa.
So do you think Bobby Sheridan, the pro-Purge, pro-America radio commentator who wields so much power over the lives of Americans based solely on his words and positions taken publicly, is just a radio host? Like so many other radio hosts in the United States, Bobby Sheridan (Dermot Mulroney) is a blow-hard behind a microphone, spouting out what he thinks people want to hear and encouraging confrontations between his guests for the sake of ratings. Stars: Hermione Corfield, Jay Paulson, Micah Hauptman, Daniel R. Hill, Sean O’Bryan, Jeremy Glazer | Written by Julie Lipson, Stu Pollard | Directed by Jen McGowan
Rising British star Hermione Corfield takes the lead in Rust Creek, an engaging low budget survival thriller that starts out like a Wrong Turn knock-off but becomes something more substantial instead.
Directed by Jen McGowan, Rust Creek centres on Kentucky college student Sawyer Scott (Corfield), who impulsively decides to skip Thanksgiving with her family and drive to Washington D.C. for a job interview. However, her Gps strands her in the frozen backwoods, where she has an encounter with scuzzy meth-dealers Hollister (Micah Hauptman) and Buck (Daniel R. Hill) that leaves her injured and fleeing for her life.
After collapsing, Sawyer is rescued by meth cook Lowell (Jay Paulson) and hides out in his trailer, though she’s not entirely sure she can trust him.

It’s hard to choose a single moment that best exemplifies the hard-edged feminist lens at work in director Jen McGowan’s chilling “Rust Creek,” but the image of the teenage Sawyer (Hermione Corfield) gruffly ripping off her acrylic nails to scale a ditch is a top contender. It’s a move that might be perceived as funny in a more commercial genre film, but is entirely believable in McGowan’s understated and plausible nightmare — making it all the more chilling.
Intimate in scope to its great advantage, “Rust Creek” begins and ends with Sawyer’s journey, with a stable of male friends and foes providing color and intrigue. When she receives word of a job interview in Washington D.C., the soon-to-be college graduate hops in her red SUV and hits the road. Following her navigation app, Sawyer turns off the highway to avoid traffic, and quickly finds herself...

Written by Julie Lipson, Rust Creek stars rising talent Hermione Corfield (King Arthur and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) as the young woman about to embark on her journey named 'Sawyer.' Set in the backwoods of Kentucky, Rust Creek is a very human story with characters that represent survival, a warped sense of entitlement and justice. Surrounded by a solid cast and strong crew, this story does not hold back and challenges the viewer to understand how things can get out of control even with the fullest of preparation. Jay Kay spoke with Director Jen McGowan about her tale of survival. They discuss casting, the physicality of the role, and tribalism for Dread Central. Typical to the start of a new year, specialty newcomers are rather few this weekend. Holiday and awards holdovers are still at center stage, while the Sundance Film Festival looms toward the end of the month. This weekend, Katherine Waterston, Michiel Huisman, Michael Shannon and Luke Evans star in Tribeca premiere State Like Sleep, opening Friday day-and-date via the Orchard. The film is the second narrative feature by Meredith Danluck. The backwoods and its inhabitants have been a cornerstone of contemporary horror films for decades. Hillbilly hicks and their sterotyped lack of intelligence and aggressive behaviour makes for an easy villain, usually with young people as the targets of their anger. Rust Creek, directed by Jen McGowan (Kelly & Cal) and written by Julie Lipson, tells the tale of a young but smart woman who is caught up not only in the hillbilly's violence, but their own nefarious dealings that leave her vulnerable and almost completely alone. While following a more or less familiar path, McGowan does not shy away from the harsh relatities of rural middle American life, while not taking away any blame born by men for their violence towards women. Sawyer (Hermione...

Too often, filmmakers forget that less can be more. Luckily, the creative forces behind Rust Creek, a new thriller hitting theaters, they know this. Within the first ten minutes, the action and story are already set into motion. Independent cinema like this is always preferable to overly pretentious fare. This flick just wants to tell a lean, mean, and razor sharp story. Without question, they do. This is a really solid film that only pauses to breathe once a breath needs to be taken. It suggests a real strong future for the filmmakers and especially for its star, who is a real find. As mentioned above, the movie gets down to it rather quickly. Sawyer Scott (Hermione Corfield) is a college student with a plum job interview scheduled in Washington D.C. in a few days. En route, she winds up getting horribly lost in the maze-like Kentucky forest. One...

When Sawyer Scott (Hermoine Corfield) receives the call she’s been waiting for, she can’t help but smile. It’s the first step towards a post-collegiate future with a job in Washington DC all but secured — the tiniest bit of uncertainty preventing her from telling her folks why she won’t be home for Thanksgiving despite high spirits. She packs her SUV, activates her phone’s Gps, and sets off east with an impromptu detour through the backwoods of Kentucky courtesy of a traffic jam on the highway. The computerized voice sends her to a dead-end that barely looks like it ever was a road and then to a bridge she’s unsure will support the weight of her car. Maybe switching to analog (a paper map) will get her back on track.
Unfortunately for Sawyer, Rust Creek isn’t the type of place to help unsuspecting travelers escape.

The knee-jerk reaction at the opening moments of the trailer for Jen McGowan's Rust Creek is a groan; here's yet another movie about a woman who gets stranded in the backcountry only to be found by a couple of locals who turn out to be killers. Thankfully, this is not that movie.
At least not entirely.
Hermione Corfield leads the movie as Sawyer, a savvy young woman on her way to a job interview. A wrong turn and car trouble leaves her stranded in the Kentucky forest where she is chased by a pair of locals looking to have a good time; whether she's interested or not. She fights back, a chase ensues and Sawyer then finds herself at the mercy of another local named Hollister (Micah Hauptman).

"If they find you here, they'll kill ya." IFC Midnight has released a trailer for Rust Creek, an indie survival thriller from filmmaker Jen McGowan which premiered at the Bentonville Film Festival earlier this year. The film is about an "ambitious, overachieving college senior" who is heading to a job interview, but makes a wrong turn and ends up stranded deep in the frozen Kentucky woods. She is forced into an uneasy alliance with an strange loner with "shadowy intentions", while trying to survive and find her way back home safely. The cast includes Hermione Corfield, Jay Paulson, Micah Hauptman, Sean O'Bryan, Daniel R. Hill, John Marshall Jones, and Jeremy Glazer. This looks very much like a Kentucky woods thriller, exactly as it sounds, with some twists & turns to go along with the survival. Not sure if it's any good though. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jen McGowan's Rust Creek,...

Cannes — MipTV and the inaugural edition of Canneseries hosted a joint In Development section for promising early-stage projects from around the world, looking to team them with producers and distributors as early as possible. The event was held April 10-11, to a packed crowd of often young producers.

For decades, there have been few subjects more dramatically debated than the ethics and legality of abortion. Yet it’s a topic that is largely ignored in scripted TV, with only a few recent series willing to do anything more than allude to the procedure. Show creators Jen McGowan and Eliza Lee are looking to change that with “Angelica,” a new series they will pitch at the Canneseries and Mip TV’s In Development section.
The show follows the stories of four women in a small Midwestern town, soon to be home to the state’s only remaining abortion clinic. Once that happens, the population of the area splits, and the clinic itself becomes a flashpoint of activity for people from in and outside the community.
“Angelica” is a series created and written by two women, which will focus primarily on women characters to address an exclusively women’s issue.

To celebrate Women's History Month, I bring your attention to a monthly Women in Film Salon run by Seed&Spark producer and founder Emily Best. Rather than belly-ache about the sad state of women in Hollywood, cinematographer Elle Schneider and director Jen McGowan ("Kelly & Cal") pulled together 13 women for an edit-a-thon to create new Wikipedia pages. They whipped out their laptops and wrote 21 entries for women directors or women filmmaker organizations that did not have pages before. They were inspired by Wikipedia edit-a-thons for women artists as well as black women in history to create or strengthen Wikipedia entries about women who are notable but rarely written about. "Wikipedia is one of the most trafficked sites on the internet and a huge resource for people searching for women filmmakers, even though very few are listed," wrote Schneider in an...

Juliette Lewis gives one of her best performances to date in the comedy/drama Kelly & Cal. In the film she plays the titular Kelly, a punk rocker turned suburban mom who feels out of place in the new town that she and her husband have just moved to. The truth is that she has become deeply nostalgic for a past she can no longer have, and she is very uncertain about the future she is expected to become a part of.
One day she meets Cal (played by Jonny Weston), a 17-year old who is now more or less confined to a wheelchair due to a recent spinal injury, and the two quickly strike up an unusual friendship that helps each of them feel alive again in a way they haven’t in some time.

Shared Tendencies: McGowan’s Debut an Understated Navigation of Character
While she’s not treading uncharted territories with her directorial debut, Kelly & Cal, Jen McGowan manages to create a believable portrayal of two outcasts coming together under rather socially inappropriate circumstances. Though the eponymous relationship portrayed is a bit too one-sided to warrant the title and isn’t exactly imbued with the dramatic heft of something like, say, Harold and Maude (1971), it’s a generally pleasing independent film that quietly and tenderly renders its central relationship as an examination of those increasingly rare connections we experience with like-minded individuals as life goes on.
Recently giving birth to her first child, Kelly (Juliette Lewis) finds herself in a slump. While not exactly suffering from post-partum depression, she’s unhappy to find her life turn into a stagnant cliché. Once a rebellious punk rocker with musical aspirations, her husband Josh’s (Josh Hopkins...

Juliette Lewis typically plays the firecracker, delivering sardonic line readings in a husky hiss or exploding normalcy with eccentric behavior.
There's a moment in Kelly & Cal when she appears at a backyard barbecue for her character's staid in-laws with aquamarine hair, deviled eggs, and a mischievous grin. But such impishness is the exception, not the rule, in director Jen McGowan's assured debut, in which Lewis's Kelly is trying her level best to be a grown-up.
First seen at a six-week checkup after having her first child, Kelly is out of sorts, having recently moved to the suburbs where her husband (Josh Hopkins) grew up. When she meets their neighbor Cal (Jonny Weston), Kelly thinks he's just an abrasive teen, but something in his defiant recklessness a...

When she meets their neighbor Cal (Jonny Weston), Kelly thinks he's just an abrasive teen, but something in his defiant recklessness a...

Before he takes on the role of Edgar in the “Divergent” sequel, “Insurgent,” up and comer Jonny Weston will be getting into all kinds of mischief with Juliette Lewis in “Kelly & Cal.” The feature debut of director Jen McGowan and screenwriter Amy Lowe Starbin, “Kelly & Cal” stars Lewis as Kelly, a new suburban mother whose longing for the free-spirited, punk-rocker past she left behind is fully reignited when she meets and strikes up an unlikely friendship with Cal (Weston), a 17-year-old boy who was recently handicapped. “Both of [our characters] had just had a crisis of some sort, [...]

Juliette Lewis is no ordinary suburban house wife in the new trailer for IFC Films’ Kelly & Cal.
In the clip, a lonely Kelly (Lewis) strikes an unlikely friendship with her teenage neighbor, Cal (Jonny Weston), after being slighted by a “mommies group.” Despite an initial hiccup, she describes Cal as “the first real person I’ve met since we moved here.”
With Cal, Kelly rediscovers her edgy rocker side and soon unveils her newly dyed electric blue hair, shocking her suburban peers and prompting an “intervention” with her family.

"You can't just define yourself by the things you've lost." IFC Films has debuted the trailer for a cute, quirky little indie called Kelly & Cal, starring Juliette Lewis as a punk-rocker turned suburban mom. The film is the feature debut of both director Jen McGowan and writer Amy Lowe Starbin, telling a very earnest, heartfelt story about friends. The cast includes Alysia Reiner, Cybill Shepherd, Margaret Colin, Josh Hopkins and Jonny Weston as the kid in the wheelchair. You might also recognize Weston from the time travel film Project Almanac. This might be a bit too quirky for my tastes, but it doesn't look half bad at all. Here's the official Us trailer for Jen McGowan's Kelly & Cal, direct from IFC Films' YouTube: Punk-rocker turned suburban mom, Kelly (Juliette Lewis), is nostalgic for a life she can no longer have and uncertain of a future she doesn’t yet fit in.
