The prequel film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it is as brilliant and bombastic as the original film. Obviously, we are talking about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to George Miller‘s 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Miller from a screenplay by Nico Lathouris and Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is taken from Green Place of Many Mothers and tries to survive in the wasteland while trying to get back home but the war between great biker horde’s warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe makes it harder. Replacing Charlize Theron from Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of Furiosa in the prequel film and it also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, and Nathan Jones. In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be discussing Paul W.S. Anderson’s 2008 remake, Death Race!
Loosely based on Ib Melchior’s short story The Racer, Paul Bartel’s Death Race 2000 is remembered as a revolutionary B-movie that entertained audiences with fun and schlocky satire despite a shoestring budget and malfunctioning cars. Starring David Carradine and featuring an early appearance by the legendary Sylvester Stallone, the 1975 film follows the masked “Frankenstein” as he embarks on a Transcontinental Road Race meant to entertain a dystopian society through vehicular violence. Boasting colorful characters and biting social commentary, the film became one of the most influential genre flicks of its time, inspiring comic-books, videogames and even other movies for many years to come.
That’s why it’s surprising that it took so long for studios to revisit the franchise, though it wasn’t for lack of trying. After decades...

There’s no getting around it — Mario Bava’s one space opera is now confirmed as a classic. Barry Sullivan and Norma Bengell must oppose invisible aliens that possess the corpses of their fellow space men. Bava’s ‘gothic’ Haunted Planet recipe just adds more weird colored lights and swirling fog to his supernatural Gothic formula. The designs are excellent and the results unique, from the odd spacecraft to the kinky costumes. The show is also genuinely influential, as should be well known to every fan of more modern sci-fi / horror films. The new HD remaster is an improvement, too!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from half-a century or more of watching Hollywood films, it’s this; the distant future is no place in time I wish to visit. This pandemic of 2020-2021 aside, the future Tinsel Town promises is made up of things far worse: robots gone crazy, desolate landscapes, warring hordes of mutants and an assortment of post-nuclear zombies running amuck. And that’s not to mention, of course, the bland and unfashionable unisex leotards we’ll all be expected to wear as uniforms. So I stand firm in this conviction and, truth be told, Ib Melchior’s The Time Travelers (American International Pictures, 1964) does little to convince me that I’m wrong.

Ib Melchior’s best-directed movie is a futuristic space opera with a time travel theme, all done at a production level suitable for a Halloween fun house. Yet its talented crew comes up with exciting visuals to match Melchior’s flaky-but-fun eclecticism: Androids, Mutants, ‘deviants,’ hydroponic gardens, force fields, time warps… and a sexist attitude or two to remind us that we’re seeing 2071 through the eyes of 1964. And it’s one of the earliest Hollywood credits for cameramen Vilmos Zsigmond and Laszlo Kovacs.

Though the 1966 space-age vampire flick Queen of Blood is not new to home video, it has been one of the more elusive science-fiction titles of the 1960s. Issued on VHS as Planet of Blood back in the early 1980s on the budget “Star Classics” label and later in 1990 on a much improved laser disc from Image (paired with Mario Bava’s similarly-themed Planet of the Vampires), Queen of Blood has been mostly unavailable to collectors for nearly twenty-five years. In March 2011 MGM finally re-issued the title as part of its Limited Edition Collection, but only as a made-on-demand release. In 2015, Kino Lorber has – very happily for genre fans and collectors - rescued this title from the wasteland of cult-film marginalia with their superb Blu-Ray release of this Roger Corman-Curtis Harrington classic.

Ib Melchior, the screenwriter and director who took two classics of literature and set them in the future for the 1960s sci-fi films Robinson Crusoe on Mars and The Time Travelers, has died. He was 97. Melchior, who claimed he was the one who came up with the ideas for TV's Lost in Space and Star Trek, died Saturday of natural causes at his home in West Hollywood, his son, Leif, told The Hollywood Reporter. A native of Copenhagen, Melchior co-wrote the screenplay for Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964), based on Daniel Dufoe's 18th century adventure tale. Directed

Jessica Chastain currently stars in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar where she plays a scientist trying to save humanity from extinction.
One year from now, Scott and Chastain, along with Matt Damon, come together in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming sci-fi film The Martian.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.
After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.”

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (20th Century Fox) Sequel to the seminal 1980s film catches up with a weathered, but still determined Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, who seems to savor every syllable of Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff’s screenplay) just out of jail and back on the comeback trail. In attempting to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter (Carey Mulligan), Gekko forges a reluctant alliance with her fiancé (Shia Labeouf), himself an ambitious young turk who finds himself seduced by Gekko’s silver tongue and promise of riches. Lifeless film is further evidence of director Oliver Stone’s decline. Once America’s most exciting filmmaker, Stone hasn’t delivered a film with any teeth since 1995’s Nixon. Labeouf and Mulligan generate no sparks on-screen, and the story feels forced from the protracted opening to the final, Disney-esque denouement. Only a brief cameo by Charlie Sheen,...

Chicago – A fascinating B-movie gem from 1964, “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” gives modern viewers an idea of what America’s collective imagination (concerning space travel) looked like during that brief moment in time. As an entertainment, it’s hokey and creaky beyond belief, but as a cinematic time capsule, it’s quite a trip.
The film begins with the most heartbreaking bait and switch in camp movie history. Two years before his success with “Batman,” Adam West shows up as an astronaut orbiting Mars. The deadpan earnestness of his performance is priceless right from the beginning, as he scolds a floating monkey with the line, “Listen Mona, this banana paste is meant for your survival only!” Sadly, the ship is soon forced to evacuate, killing off West and leaving only disgruntled monkey Mona and West’s crewmate, Kit, played by Paul Mantee. Seriously, it’s like being promised Keir Dullea and getting Gary Lockwood.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars Directed by: Byron Haskin Written by: Daniel Defoe (novel), John C. Higgins, Ib Melchior Starring: Paul Mantee, Victor Lundin and Adam West With a title like Robinson Crusoe on Mars [1], it's easy to lump in Byron Haskin's [2] quiet and deliberate survival film with sci-fi b-movie fare like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians [3] or Mars Needs Women [4]. While I don't think it's so horrible to hold company with goofy films such as those, Robinson Crusoe on Mars certainly excels beyond Saturday Matinee fare and gives us an interesting spin on a classic tale, resulting in a film that's both entertaining and scientifically accurate (sort of). The film is a sci-fi retelling of Daniel Defoe's original novel, Robinson Crusoe [5], substituting a tropical island for a harsh Martian landscape. When Commander Christopher 'Kit' Draper (played by Paul Mantee [6]) and his co-pilot Colonel Dan McReady (a pre-Batman...

The first thing that came to my mind after only a few minutes of watching Criterion's new Blu-ray transfer of Robinson Crusoe on Mars was Forbidden Planet. This isn't exactly a mind-blowing revelation. In fact it's a rather elementary observation at best, which is exactly where my knowledge of old school sci-fi films lies.
I like old school science fiction, but I don't have the patience to search out the quality amongst the crap. I'm a huge fan of the original "Star Trek" television series, I enjoyed Forbidden Planet and had fun with director Byron Haskin's Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but Haskin's original War of the Worlds did very little for me. I know in some circles this is probably considered blasphemy, but if it helps any Steven Spielberg's remake, while I admit to enjoying it when I saw it the first time in theaters, hasn't been a...

It shouldn’t have worked. Going on premise alone, Death Race 2000 should have been a forgettable, dreary slog, a body-count picture with cars instead of knives. On the supplementary material to the 1975 film’s new Blu-ray release, producer Roger Corman talks about finding an original short story by Ib Melchior, liking its race-and-murder element, but deciding it needed humor to really make the transition to the big screen. He was right, and he deserves credit for the insight, but the lion’s share of the praise goes to director Paul Bartel and screenwriters Robert Thom and Charles B ...

It's not difficult to let yourself get carried away by full-bore dystopian satires like "Death Race 2000" (1975), for a landfill full of reasons. Two immediately pop into mind: on one hand, unsavory poppycock like Roger Corman and Paul Bartel's infamous film make plain the simple fact that science fiction, when it's done properly, isn't about thrills. It's about ideas and social speculation, and is therefore a far closer cousin to pure satire than it's ever been to horror films (the genre with which sci-fi is usually clumped).
You could argue it a dozen ways pro or con, but sorry, without the twisted birth imagery and post-industrial wage-slavery context and equation between commerce and rabid predation, "Alien" (for one example) would be just a horror film and also not worth remembering. With it, it's a scalpel taken to the thorax of our socioeconomic Manifest Destiny.
Examples are everywhere, and once you grow up,...

When thinking of classic B-movies, the conversation must start and stop with not only Roger Corman, but the seminal sci-fi cult masterpiece, Death Race 2000.
Not only has the film become fodder for a rather turgid Paul W.S. Anderson (and I stress the W.S., not Thomas, there is indeed a massive difference) remake, and a recently announced direct to DVD sequel, but it has seemingly been lost to history, as outside of the film world, its name isn’t quite as well known as it damn well should be.
However, Shout Factory, with their new release of the film, is looking to change all of that. For the most part, they definitely succeed, as this is an interesting, albeit a mixed bag, DVD.
Personally, this is one of my all-time favorite films. It’s not in my “top 10” or anything like that, but if I want to sit down,...

Despite popular opinion, remakes are not a new phenomenon, they’ve been around pretty much as long as cinema, and have given us some of the finest movies in cinematic history.
Unfortunately, they’ve also given us some real steaming piles of turd, particularly in recent years. Take a look at my own list of the “8 Remakes That Should Never Have Happened” and see for yourselves:
