Dwayne Johnson has a behemoth physique that many bodybuilding enthusiasts dream of possessing but he is not alone in the world. The actor once stumbled upon a picture of South Korean star, Ma Dong-seok aka Mavely, and The Rock could not help but challenge him to arm wrestle.

Dong-seok rose to prominence and caught global attention following his 2016 zombie horror flick Train to Busan starring alongside Gong Yoo in the Yeon Sang-ho-directed movie. The actor made his Hollywood debut with Marvel Studios’ Eternals which stars Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek.

San Diego Comic-Con is the domain of weirdos. What began in a hotel basement in 1970 as the one-day Golden State Comic-Minicon grew to become Sdcc in 1973 and then Comic-Con International: San Diego (Cci) in 1995. It is the Super Bowl of pop culture fandom. It is a place where 130,000 ticketed attendees—not counting thousands more who will make a pilgrimage to the city during the con—will arrive once more after a three-year hiatus to let their geek flags fly. And over the course of five days, San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is the worldwide capital of weirdos.
But what is a weirdo? The word has its etymology in “wyrd,” which means “fate” or “destiny.” And a weirdo is one who is in control of their own destiny. Hat tip to weird researcher John E.L. Tenney for reminding me of that. Yet “weird” also means “strange” or “bizarre.” There’s a...

When I think of guys in pro-wrestling who are unsung more than perhaps they should be, who have given countless memories over decades and who still manage to get in the ring and tell stories that will always be relevant and stirring, I think of Dustin Rhodes. When I began watching pro-wrestling in 1992, at just nine years old, I saw Dustin Rhodes working as “The Natural” in WCW. Since then he’s pretty much been a constant in the business, and one of those guys I always love to watch.
Dustin Patrick Runnels was born in Austin Texas in 1969, the son of the son of a plumber “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. He had big shoes to fill the moment he decided to step foot into a wrestling ring in 1988 when he debuted for Championship Wrestling from Florida. Since then, Dustin has put together a legacy over 32 years as a professional wrestler,...

Oh, wrestling manager, how I miss thee. Remember the 80s? Remember pro-wrestling during the “golden era” and the sheer amount of managers we had on our screens? There was so many, from heel managers both male and female, and valets, we had loads of men and women standing ringside offering an element of potential interference or backup to their client in the ring. It was glorious, that’s what it was! I miss managers. We have had a few over the last couple of decades, from Vickie Guerrero to Zeb “Dutch Mantell” Coulter to Lana to Zelena Vega to Paul Heyman, but there aren’t that many compared to how it used to be.
I became a pro-wrestling fanatic in the early 90s and went back to watch 80s wrestling immediately on video tapes. Seeing women like Miss Elizabeth and “Sensational” Sherri doing a damn good job in their jobs...

Match #1: Big Bad Steve lost to Jake Strong
My Take: As matches go, this was not what you would call “ambitious”. The whole idea was to introduce Jake Strong, who is the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger. Strong typically got the wrong end of the deal while working for Vince McMahon, with most of his momentum halted just as he was starting to gain some steam. Strong looks so different outside the WWE, despite having an identical look to his WWE days. It could be said that Strong’s training for Bellator has had an effect on his confidence (and that’s likely true) but I’d argue that it’s simply a thrill for any wrestler to go to work without having to run...

The WWE Hall of Fame news continues with a report that former All Japan Triple Crown and Awa Heavyweight Champion Stan Hansen and former WWE Women’s Champion Jacqueline will be inducted into this year’s class.
Though WWE has not acknowledged the inductions on television or online, the company released a special commemorative WrestleMania 32 magazine last week that named Hansen and Jacqueline as 2016 inductees.
WhatCulture.com actually broke the news of Jacqueline’s induction several weeks ago…
Though Stan Hansen primarily made his reputation in Japan, he also competed for WWE in the 1970s, quickly becoming one of the company’s top heels. When Bruno Sammartino suffered a broken neck in a match with Hansen, credit for the injury was given to “The Lariat’s” devastating finishing maneuver. A world title. A championship opportunity. The special designation of “king.” A cool looking trophy. Whatever the prize is at the end of a wrestling tournament, it doesn’t really matter too much in the grand scheme of things. What does matter is that a whole slew of grapplers will be put in brackets and pitted against each other creating a number of interesting matchups and possibilities.
You name a top legend in the business and that person has probably won a major tournament at some point in their career. Sting, Triple H, Bret Hart, The Rock,Randy Savage, The Road Warriors, Steve Austin and Chris Jericho are just a few of the icons who have a major tournament victory to their list of career accomplishments.
Sometimes these tournaments don’t deliver and we end up with less than desirable matches and winners. (King Mabel anyone?) Yet, when...

The Attitude Era is one of the most fondly remembered times in professional wrestling history. With WCW dominating WWF in the ratings, Vince McMahon and his roster had to band together to reinvent their product for the coming millennium.
Driven by the desire to be the best that can only be brought out by the fiercest of competition, future legends like Steve Austin, Mick Foley, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Triple H and The Rock ushered in a new tone and revolutionised the industry.
Later on into the Attitude Era, a second wave of stars occurred. Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, and The Radicalz were allowed to flourish in this new environment and the promotion never looked back. WWF won the war in 2001, and by spring 2001 The Attitude Era was drawing to a close.

Although it’s fun to look back at the Attitude Era now with much nostalgia and warmth, we should remind ourselves that it wasn’t all fun and games. For every epic Austin vs McMahon segment or Hhh vs Cactus Jack feud there was a Mideon vs Gangrel match, a Kennell From Hell contest or Tiger Ali Singh. This article would act as a reminder that not everything was rosy from 1997-2001, despite what some kid on a message board might tell you.
Now we’re not saying that the Attitude Era was all bad. It was a boom period for wrestling in general, and it created many lasting moments that will live in pop culture forever. But, like most things, it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. For example…

On Total Divas Sunday night, viewers watched as Jimmy Uso exchanged vows with Naomi Knight. Unlike typical WWE weddings, no one objected and interrupted, no one smashed someone with cake or a steel chair… and stage names were not used. It was Jonathan Fatu marrying Trinity McCray.
Recently, WWE has seemingly had an unprecedented number of real-life weddings concurrently incorporated into the company’s storylines – all through Total Divas. Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella tied the knot the week after WrestleMania and were immediately thrust into the spotlight on Raw upon returning from their honeymoon. And Tyson Kidd and Natalya’s marriage was woven into WWE television, with Nattie breaking away from Great Khali to partner with her husband as he returned from injury.
While reality TV has increased the profile of these married couples, WWE has certainly incorporated real-life marriages into storylines before – to varying degrees of success.

A lot of people have been talking about Benjamin Morris’ 538 piece, “Are Pro Wrestlers Dying at an Unusual Rate?”
Like Morris, I am neither an actuarial scientist nor a demographer. So, our interpretations of the data should be taken with a grain of salt. My results were somewhat different from Morris’ due to a difference data set and changes in how we calculated actuarial predictions.
Differences in methodology from Morris
I also used Social Security Actuarial Life Tables, but my “expected mortality rates” for the age groups were not the same as Morris’. For each wrestler, I calculated what their age would have been as of today. Then, based on gender, I looked up the number of lives (out of 100,000) that were expected to still be alive and converted that to a percentage. His analysis looked at wrestlers who were on 20+ WWF PPVs through 2002. I went with a...

Even though it's WWE's Showcase of the Immortals, not everybody gets enough time in the spotlight at WrestleMania.
WrestleMania is the biggest show of the year for WWE and more often than not, it's packed to the gills with star power and matches that make you want to pull out your wallet.
Sometimes, though, they really need to make time for the eight minute Undertaker entrances and ten minutes of Hall of Famers just standing on the stage, doing a big pile of nothing. Certain matches have to be shortened for one reason or another. Sometimes it's just to get the match out of the way and sometimes it's part of a story. A lot of huge names have been involved in these less-than-two-minute matches and a lot of them are interesting in their own little way.

Professional wrestling has been referred to as a sporting soap opera, and like any good soap opera, it has its share of romantic relationships, both real and scripted.
Throughout the years romance has often blossomed between co workers outside of the ring. Many months spent on the road become a little easier with a loving partner alongside you. On screen story-line relationships often spill over into real life (Hhh and Stephanie anyone?) and occasionally real life relationships are turned into story-lines. Attractive, young, fit, healthy men and women working together, sparks fly and relationships forming seem inevitable.
Less inevitable, finding their happily ever after. Working with your spouse can be taxing on your relationship. Working with your spouse in the environment of professional wrestling seems even harder, often leading to heartbreak, and even tragedy. Honorable mentions go to, Torrie Wilson and Billie Kidman,...

As we begin the month of October, I fondly remember Halloween Havoc, WCW’s annual fall extravaganza. Halloween Havoc was the one pay-per-view I looked forward to every year since it seemed like the company was inventing some weird gimmick. Some of them worked very well (The Thunderdome or Thunder Cage before the threat of lawsuit), others had mixed results (Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal) and others made me cringe (Chamber of Horrors, Sumo Monster Truck Match). Today, I want to talk about the one Halloween Havoc that didn’t have some weird or insane gimmick match: Halloween Havoc 1990 with the tagline “Terror Rules the Ring”. The card emanated from The Uic Pavilion in Chicago, a location that had held two previous Nwa PPVs: Starrcade 1987 and The Chi-Town Rumble.

Recently in WWE we have seen many superstars change their image and name. Joe Hennig went from Michael McGillicutty to Curtis Axel in order to save his career, Ryan Reeves went from Skip Sheffield to Ryback and has gained more recognition since even main eventing Extreme Rules against John Cena for the WWE Championship.
More recently we have seen Windham Rotunda change his name from Husky Harris to Bray Wyatt, although this has been a huge positive and lift for Wyatt’s career there has been chants of ‘Husky Harris’ through the arena most notably on his debut.
In this article I’m going to look at the history of name changing in the WWE and bring to you the superstars who have altered their persona for success.

Back in 1995, the WWF was offering five PPVs – Rumble, WrestleMania, Kotr, Summerslam and Survivor Series – at $30 apiece. The idea behind the concept was that a shorter (2 hours compared to 3) and cheaper ($15 to start with) PPVs in months without a major event would give them an edge over the increasing WCW threat.
You may notice that the earliest PPV included was in February ’97, despite the first event being held almost two years prior. The problem was that, although some of the main events were exceptional, the overall cards were poor because the WWF didn’t have a brilliant roster. The fact that the WWF seemed obsessed with stipulations at the time didn’t help – Razor Ramon vs. 1-2-3 Kid in a Cry-baby Match comes to mind.

It’s not often that you can say that the WWE have done well for the Divas; often they are overlooked, under appreciated and left to wrestle brief two minute matches that don’t allow many of them to show their real talents. Over the past couple of years, big talents such as Beth Phoenix, Eve, Michelle McCool and Maryse have all left the company, partly citing the lack of opportunities offered to them as a reason for their departures. They have left behind a division that is rather bare-bones, but there are signs of potential thanks to the likes of Paige and Summer Rae making their way up through Nxt, while the Bella Twins and the Funkadactyls being given opportunities to mix it up in the ring on regular occasions.

One fallout from Brock Lesnar’s recent one-year deal with the WWE that will culminate in a marquee match at WrestleMania 29 is the speculation that his wife Rena Lesnar (Sable) will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. It is well known that Vince McMahon would ideally like to induct a female into the WWE Hall of Fame each year and Lesnar’s recent deal with the company makes her a very likely candidate for inclusion in 2013.
F4WOnline.com reports that Sable’s possible induction has not been confirmed by anyone yet in the WWE though it is easy to argue her case. In her first run with the company between 1996 and 1999 she actually became one of the major attractions in professional wrestling.
