“The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.
Netflix’s hit royal drama — which came to an end last year after six seasons — landed eight nominations in total, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. However, it missed out for drama series (an award it has been nominated for three times previously).
Just behind “The Crown” and also a Netflix production, the apocalyptic “Black Mirror” episode “Demon 79” earned seven nominations, including limited drama and leading actress for Anjana Vasan.
Further down in a tight group of frontrunners, BBC dramas “Happy Valley” and “The Sixth Commandment and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” each have six nominations. Sarah Lancashire’s leading actress nomination for “Happy Valley” could see...

The Crown’s swansong season has dominated the BAFTA TV nominations, picking up eight in a record year for Netflix.
Although it missed out in the coveted Drama Series category, four of the Netflix royal smash’s actors were handed nods today including Dominic West, who played Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki, who was Princess Diana. Salim Daw and Lesley Manville are the other two nominated actors and actresses, while The Crown also received nominations in the likes of costume design, make up and sound.
Netflix achieved a record haul and was second only to the BBC with nominations, comfortably eclipsing stalwarts ITV and Channel 4 as Top Boy and Black Mirror were also rewarded.
Although not its most critically-rated season, Peter Morgan’s royal saga ended late last year with a bang and plenty controversy, and the noms come amid the ongoing Kate Middleton saga.

AppleTV+’s darkly comedic espionage thriller Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman, has been renewed for season 5. More here:
More great telly is on the horizon. AppleTV+’s awards juggernaut Slow Horses has been renewed for a fifth season, even though it only just wrapped up season three.
Slow Horses, which is based on Mick Herron’s series of novels, follows Slough House, a division of MI5 filled with agents who have, one way or another, messed up their career prospects and are mostly confined to their desks. Yet, somehow this ragtag group of British heroes seem to find themselves in the middle of some pretty spectacular schemes.
Gary Oldman headlines the series as Jackson Lamb, the curmudgeon boss of Slough House and he is joined by the likes of Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas and Olivia Cooke in the cast. Oldman was recently recognised by the Golden Globes for his...

Apple TV+ is shifting up its rollout strategy for Slow Horses Season 3, and it means we'll be getting new episodes sooner.
As revealed Tuesday morning, the highly-anticipated next chapter of the Gary Oldman drama will now premiere on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.
It was previously revealed that new episodes would air beginning December 1, 2023, so we're getting them two days earlier.
Apple TV+ has been experimenting with rolling out shows earlier in the week, and it worked very well for Ted Lasso Season 3, so we're inclined to believe this will be a good thing for this hit drama series.
We also got our first look at Slow Horses Season 3 today, with Apple TV+ sharing the official trailer.
If there's one thing we know about Slow Horses, it's that the series features a lot of talented individuals, and that will continue.

When Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) is kidnapped by rogue MI5 agents, it’s up to her fellow Slow Horse agents to save her in the first trailer for Season 3 of “Slow Horses.”
Apple TV+ released the preview on Tuesday for the British spy show, which returns with the first two episodes of Season 3 on Nov. 29. A new episode premieres every Wednesday through Dec. 27.
“I need a team of good agents, but I just have the Slow Horses,” laments slovenly senior agent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who never misses a chance to crack wise, even when lives are on the line.
Later in the clip, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) calls from a besieged warehouse to tell Lamb, “There are men outside with guns. Some backup might be handy.”
Lamb’s nonchalant reply, “Well, I’m busy.”
Responds a frustrated Cartwright, “Ok, thanks, I’m sure the situation will resolve itself.”

Cinematographer who brought his imaginative sensibilities to films such as Trainspotting, Billy Elliot and Quadrophenia
The cultural aesthetic of the Britpop and New Labour years was shaped partly by the cinematographer Brian Tufano, who has died aged 83. In films such as Trainspotting (1996), East Is East (1999) and Billy Elliot (2000), he combined social realism and absurdist fantasy, smudging the joins between the two. A typical Tufano production, said the film-maker Saul Metzstein, had “technical polish and a cinematic ambition at odds with its financially modest status”.
He worked for the BBC throughout the 1960s and 70s with directors including Lindsay Anderson, Ken Russell, Stephen Frears, Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. But it was in his work with a younger generation in the 90s that his imaginative cinematic sensibility was most strongly felt. For Danny Boyle, with whom he had already made the BBC period drama series Mr Wroe’s Virgins (1993), he shot the...

Well, it just so happens that one of the contributors happens to be Steven Moffat, and on the day of the Springtime talking head shoot, he's in outspoken mood – effectively saying that while Adams was one of the greatest writers to walk the Earth, his script editing techniques on Doctor Who left a bit to be desired - bar City Of Death,...

Crossing one’s own timeline is a cardinal sin for a time traveler. Walking over one’s grave even worse. So when The Doctor is forced to do that…
The Name Of The Doctor
by Steven Moffat
Directed by Saul Metzstein
Re-appearing after its defeat a year previous, The Great Intelligence forces The Doctor to the location of his grave, wherein is hidden the physical manifestation of his timeline, a map of his life, which in the hands of the wrong people could be used to re-write his life. The Intelligence chooses to do so, at the cost of its own existence. The only way to save The Doctor, and all the good works he did, is with another sacrifice.
Emotionally, the episode worked exceedingly well. We got a solid River Song story, one where we finally see The Doctor admit his feeling for her. But narratively, we’re very...

Doctor Who, Series 7, Episode 14: “The Name of the Doctor”
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Saul Metzstein
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
This week, on Doctor Who: The Paternoster Gang has fun with candles, River says goodbye, and the Doctor comes to Trenzalore
Series 7B of Doctor Who has been markedly uneven. From the delightfully stylized (though troublingly sexual assault-y) “The Crimson Horror” to the beautiful but nonsensical “The Rings of Akhaten”, almost every episode has peppered interesting visuals or premises with frustrating character touches and plot contrivances. It’s no surprise then that “The Name of the Doctor” suffers from this same messiness; every success of the episode is at the same time a failure because showrunner and writer of this episode Steven Moffat doesn’t follow through creatively with his ideas- they’re satisfying on a surface level, but instantly fall apart upon further reflection.

People are turning up dead in the canal in Victorian Yorkshire, their bodies in varied states of petrifaction and their skin a lobster red. Madame Vastra and Jenny are asked to investigate, and when they realize that The Doctor is somehow involved, they hurry to investigate. A woman is establishing her own ark on dry land, planning to survive the next torrent, not of rain, but of poison.

Doctor Who, Series 7, Episode 12: “The Crimson Horror”
Written by Mark Gatiss
Directed by Saul Metzstein
Airs Saturdays at 8pm (Et) on BBC America
This week, on Doctor Who: Mrs. Gillyflower brings codependency to a new level, Ada finds a pet monster, and Jenny shows her mettle
For the second through fourth series of NuWho, the grind of production resulted in one episode each year referred to as “Doctor-lite”, which featured other characters and kept the Doctor to a minimal role (and gave lead David Tennant a couple days off). During the 11th Doctor’s tenure, there haven’t been any Doctor-lite episodes, for various reasons, and so there haven’t been any stories told from a perspective other than the Doctor’s. This week that changes, with fan favorites Madame Vastra, Strax, and Jenny taking the lead for “The Crimson Horror”, a ghoulish tale of murder and mayhem in Victorian Yorkshire.

With spoilers, here's our review of the latest Doctor Who series 7 adventure, Mark Gatiss' The Crimson Horror...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
The Crimson Horror
For the second time in this current run of Doctor Who series 7 episodes, Mark Gatiss has delivered an episode that blends together the tone and feel of different eras of the show. Set in 1893, The Crimson Horror mixes in elements of horror, period detective story, humour and science fiction, that - effects aside - feels like it could have sat as easily in the 70s as the modern run. The resultant episode is a fun one.
Interestingly, it's an episode where the Doctor and Clara aren't in it much, too. For large parts, they're part of the mystery here, rather than the ones actively trying to solve it.

Mark Gatiss takes Doctor Who to 1890s Yorkshire in The Crimson Horror. Here's our spoiler-free review...
It'd be remiss to call Mark Gatiss' The Crimson Horror the Doctor-lite episode of series 7. But were you to go with the description of it as the-one-where-the-Doctor-takes-a-surprisingly-long-time-to-show-up, you'd be more on the money.
Set in Yorkshire in the 1890s, it's actually left to the returning trio of Strax, Madame Vastra and Jenny to do the early heavy lifting in the episode. As such, we get one or two references back to The Snowmen here (which was the last time we saw them), not least because the last time they met Clara she was suffering a little from being, well, dead. But this is primarily a standalone tale, a period mystery with horror under and overtones. Pretty much perfect for Mark Gatiss, then.

"His secret revealed"
That's the promise of the latest and last episode poster released for the current run of Doctor Who episodes, The Name of the Doctor.
Written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Saul Metzstein, the episode welcomes the return of (look away now if you don't want to know) River Song. Alex Kingston's character, not at all incidentally, was the subject of the episode's original rumoured title*, which we've stuck beneath the image for those who'd rather avoid potential spoilers.
The name, the secret, the wife, the companion, the set-up to the 50th anniversary episode... We could be in for something rather special here, don't you agree?

It was announced through several science-fiction conventions (likely reaching more people there than who actually participated in the nominations), but the Hugo Award nominations are out. And at the top of the list once again? "Doctor Who." The British series, now in its 50th year, received three nominations in Best Dramatic Presentation. They included "The Angels Take Manhattan" from Steven Moffat and director Nick Hurran, "Asylum of the Daleks" -- also by Moffat and Hurran -- and "The Snowmen" by Moffat and director Saul Metzstein. "Doctor Who" stepped aside lone enough to also nominate the "Fringe" episode "Letters of Transit" from J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Akiva Goldsman, J.H. Wyman, Jeff Pinkner and director Joe Chappelle. Also getting just a single nomination was ...

The one thing that you can confidently say about Christmas is that it sticks to a very rigid routine. Straying from the path? No such hopes. Christmas sticks to a tried and tested formula, which begins right back in August when shops decide to promote their new ranges of festive stock. Just what you want in a sweltering August – to wander past a shop window and see rolls of Santa wrapping paper and cards.
The routine then steps up a gear in November, when it seems that there's no escaping the usual Christmas music, parping brass bands and squawking singers. Come December, and it's the usual maelstrom of turkeys, drunken parties and tightly packed shopping centres. Even the day itself tends to follow a very strict pattern – presents under the tree; ill-fitting clothes; Mrs Maj; too much dinner and booze; a snooze on the the sofa; smiles and good times in EastEnders.

Doctor Who, 2012 Christmas Special: “The Snowmen”
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Saul Metzstein
Aired Christmas at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
Another Christmas, another Doctor Who special. Though the series has a dubious track record for specials, to say the least, it’s become somewhat comforting to be able to count on new Who each December 25th. The high water mark for Doctor Who Christmas specials remains the enchanting and whimsical “A Christmas Carol”, which saw the Doctor (Matt Smith) channeling Dickens in his own timey-wimey way to transform a bitter man, saving the Ponds in the process. Though this episode doesn’t live up to that standard, it is one of the better specials thanks to charismatic performances from Matt Smith and new Companion Jenna-Louise Coleman and the welcome return of Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax.
Showrunner Steven Moffat seems highly interested in revamping the series. Aside from the new Companion,...

There are less than 2 weeks to go before Christmas and in recent times for a Doctor Who fan, one of the highlights is of course the Doctor Who Christmas Special. The bonus with this episode is that it is the first of the 50th anniversary year, which started on 23rd November so it’ll be interesting to see how that begins to impact on the show. I however, have managed to skip all the drama and indulgence of Christmas day, for my eyes have been privileged to witness the Christmas Special ahead of transmission at a preview screening in Cardiff.
Now I’m going to share some of this knowledge with you because I’m a nice guy, but I’m not going to spoil anything as everyone at the auditorium was told that if we do, Steven Moffat will turn up at our house with a Dalek and do unspeakable things to us.

As any Whovian can tell you, the TV highlight of every holiday season is the annual "Doctor Who" Christmas special. And this year's "The Snowmen" has the added bonus of introducing us to the Doctor's new companion, Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman).
In addition to the trailer and prequel webisode released last week, BBC America has also unveiled a slew of photos from the special which spotlight The Doctor (Matt Smith), Clara, the villainous Doctor Simeon (Richard E. Grant) and a few old friends.
Check out the photos and the questions they inspire below:
How will Clara stack up against previous companions?
What nefarious plot does Doctor Simeon (Richard E. Grant) have planned?
How will Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Commander Strax (Dan Starkey), and Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) fit into the story?
What kind of holiday mischief will The Doctor and Clara get into?

Yes, you've arrived at A Town Called Mercy, a destination far removed from the Day Of The Dead festival in Mexico. It's a locale that contains every Western cliché under the sun. A typical bar in which you too can order a cup of the strong stuff; a law-abiding marshall, a Bible-clutching preacher man, and an undertaker eager for his next commission. It's been a fair while since we had a Western story – The Gunfighters, in fact, from 46 years ago. If you've had a look at my review of The Gunfighters, then you'll know that Westerns are not my...

Doctor Who, Series 7, Episode 3: “A Town Called Mercy”
Written by Toby Whithouse
Directed by Saul Metzstein
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
This week, on Doctor Who: The Doctor, Amy, and Rory are thrust into a moral quandary when they miss Mexico by 200 miles and end up in Mercy.
For a series as adept at reinventing its genre and tone as Doctor Who has been, this show has had a blind spot towards westerns for most of its run. Besides the silly and fun First Doctor story “The Gunslingers”, which saw the Doctor and Companions Steven and Dodo swept up into events at the Ok Corral, the series has eschewed the genre altogether. Sci-fi and Westerns have long gone hand in hand, ever since the frontier became the Final Frontier, and so the prospect of the Doctor once again rocking a Stetson and getting his cowboy on seemed exciting,...

After two generally excellent installments, the seventh series of Doctor Who fumbles a bit with the messy, underwhelming A Town Called Mercy. This is not a bad episode by any stretch of the imagination, with plenty of fun and dramatic elements worth admiring, but it also has its fair share of problems, issues the prevent the hour from achieving the greatness so often in its reach.
The first and biggest question to address is whether or not Doctor Who functions in a Western setting. Yes and no, though the results ultimately weigh towards the latter. From an aesthetic standpoint, the hour is an unmitigated triumph, with gorgeous cinematography, beautifully cinematic set and costume design, and tremendous direction throughout by Saul Metzstein, who also did strong work on last week’s episode. Metzstein seems to understand the rhythms of the genre rather thoroughly, and his work making this one play like an authentic,...

The Doctor attempts to help the Indian Space Agency about a runaway spaceship of Canadian size headed for Earth. Promising to stop it before it needs to be blown up, he picks up a few friends – Rory and Amy (and Rory’s dad, accidentally) big game hunter John Riddell, and already in his company, Queen Nefertiti of Egypt. They find the ship is a derelict space ark, originally from Earth, created by the Silurians. But where are they, and how did a mysterious and heartless trader named Solomon get control of the ship?
Arthur Darvill had it exactly right when he discusses the latest episode of Doctor Who in a promotional video – “It does what it says on the tin”. The Doctor’s got a gang, Amy has her own companions, Rory’s got his dad, Rory’s dad’s got balls in his pants, the ship’s got a surprising builder,...

Years ago, in ancient Rome, a clever method was devised to find wealth beyond people's wildest imaginings – the Romans headed to streams and mountainsides to pan for gold. You'd separate the grit from the gold and bingo! One or two nuggets of worth to be had – of course, the only problem is making your way through the dirt and grit to find anything of value.
Which brings me onto Doctor Who's latest escapade – if you'd already seen the many trailers on BBC1, you'll know that it's called Dinosaurs!!! On. A. Spaceship!!! Yes, Doctor, thanks for stating the obvious. As far as titles go, it's not exactly the best. What next? Killer Robots On A Sandminer? Spaghetti Monsters In A Nuclear Reactor? Crappy Giant Chicken In A Dutch Crypt?

Doctor Who, Series 7, Episode 2: “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship”
Written by Chris Chibnall
Directed by Saul Metzstein
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
This week, on Doctor Who: The Doctor recruits a gang, including a Big Game hunter, Amy, Rory, Rory’s dad Brian, and Queen Nefertiti, to investigate a mysterious spaceship set to collide with the Earth
One of the great things about Doctor Who is its ability to morph genres week to week and season to season. What started as an educational children’s show has explored, at various points, buddy cop-style comedy, gothic horror, and high drama. For series seven, the focus seems to be foremost on fun and adventure and this episode delivers both in spades. It’s a well-paced story, with all of the new characters introduced and established in an economical opening few minutes. The story is refreshingly straightforward, with nary a twist in sight,...

Casting news for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special has already begun to creep out, doing its job of eliciting excitement for the holiday event. Already we’ve heard the special would be the episode the Doctor is introduced to his new companion, played by the adorable Jenna-Louise Coleman, but there will of course be other guest stars. Richard E. Grant and Tom Ward have both been cast, which means we can begin the speculation as to who will be playing who, what kind of hijinks we can expect, and just how Christmasy can we expect this to be.
As reported by EW.com, you can expect to see Grant – interestingly, he played the Doctor once in a 2003 animated special, “Scream of the Shalka” – as the new villain in the special. Just look at that face of his. He doesn’t look like he would do well playing a good guy.
