You know the drill. Put on your PJs and say your prayers… it's time for one nightmare of an all-nighter with a double dose of slashtastic cult classics: The Slumber Party Massacre and Slumber Party Massacre II!
In The Slumber Party Massacre, Trish (Michele Michaels) invites her high school basketball teammates over for a night they'll never forget—or survive—when an unexpected guest crashes the party: an escaped psychopath with a portable power drill. And in the freaky follow-up Slumber Party Massacre II, Courtney (Crystal Bernard) is tormented by dreams of the infamous Driller Killer returning to wreak havoc…only to find that (bad) dreams really do come true when the murderous monster is reincarnated as an evil rock...

The slasher film. Across several decades, one of the most dominating sub-genres in the entire horror sphere. From the beginning days of the formative slashers in the 1970s, all the way to today’s reboots, sequels, and fresh originals. From classic icons such as Michael Myers to modern killers like Mia Goth’s Pearl. The slasher truly lives forever, proving it’s always in fashion.
One of the most unique slashers is a movie that just celebrated its 40th anniversary. A movie that spawned a series of films written and directed entirely by women, a rarity in the genre.
That movie? The Slumber Party Massacre.
Released in 1982, The Slumber Party Massacre started life as an on-the-nose horror movie that would essentially be a send-up of genre tropes. This original screenplay was titled Sleepless Nights and was authored by famed feminist writer Rita Mae Brown as a parody of the often dominated slasher film genre,...

I sometimes get in the mood for fun summer B horror movies and this is certainly one of them type of flicks. I have seen this movie a few times in the past. It’s always a pleasant surprise on an overly tired genre by this point. Slasher films had peaked in the mid 80s and fizzled by the time this film made its debut.

At a sleepover you might tell scary stories to spook your guests, but you wouldn’t want anything scary to crash your party — especially if that scary “something” was a crazy man with a power drill and no intentions of using it for home improvement projects. This violent party crasher is featured in Amy Holden Jones’ 1982 directorial debut, The Slumber Party Massacre.

A mass murdering maniac escapes from prison and, armed with a power drill, begins to decimate the nubile high schoolers of a Los Angeles suburb during their slumber party. That’s it. Why mess with perfection and add a convoluted plot?
This is the 80′s remember, when the slasher movie was king and all you needed to make a film was a bunch of nubile girls willing to strip off on camera, some Ok(ish) special effects, and someone to play the killer… No need forany real motivation, no need for any back story, just as long as there’s gore-a-plenty!
Initially intended as a parody of the slasher genre, scripted by lesbian-feminist author and activist Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle) and directed by Amy Holden Jones (who went...

Scream Factory recently announced that 1982′s The Slumber Party Massacre will be making its way to Blu-ray early next year:
“We’re happy to report that we’ve gone back into our “vaults” and will be bringing the original 1982 Slumber Party Massacre film to Blu-ray for the first time in early 2014! This will be a brand new HD transfer taken from the original camera negative. We had many requests for this and we’re pleased to be able to bring this into the Scream family.
As many of you know, we released this film on DVD back in 2010 along with Parts 2 & 3 as a part of a “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics” collection. For several factors (mostly financial), we can only bring you the original at this time on Blu but if sales are solid, we will certainly consider 2 & 3 for the future. ”

Psycho-therapy was written and directed by Joshua Nelson (pictured right), who scripted and starred in a number of New York/New Jersey-lensed horror features including Pink Eye, Skinned Alive (a.k.a. Eat Your Heart Out) and Aunt Rose. This new project, he tells Fango, “is about a middle-aged psychotherapist who is abused by her husband and ignored by her patients. She is pushed to a very dark place where she feels that people who can’t change, or don’t want to change, have only one option—to be killed. She lures the challenged couples to an upstate getaway where she can finally fix them…her way.” The cast includes Rose Fiore, Karla Post, Alfred Cantilina, Michael Johnson, Ernest Romeo, Kerry Wittig and Michelle Michaels; Kevin Harrington served as the cinematographer and editor. Psycho-therapy is currently making the festival rounds, and will screen March 23 at the Jersey Gore Film Festival.

Seeing how the teen horror slasher "The Slumber Party Massacre", which starred Robin Stille and Michelle Michaels, was a big hit for New World Pictures, Roger Corman was looking to create that same success yet again after he developed Concorde Pictures. Thus was born Sorority House Massacre which also incorporated elements from the popular Halloween franchise. Sorority House Massacre continued on with the tradition of a female director (Carol Frank), and an ensemble of female leads including Wendy Martel, Pamela Ross and Nicole Rio. However, the standout was Angela O' Neill. While the others were appealing and created distinct personalities for each of their characters, Angela O' Neill had this almost ethereal like presence. She wasn't this big, flashy diva actress. She was a bit more on the quite and reserved side, but there was just something about her that made it so that her presence filled the screen and...

Let’s go back to the 1980′s. Ronald Reagan was president. Our economy was in the shitter. AIDS was making news as a real threat to society. And the slasher film was making tons of money in the box office and at home with a new fangled contraption called a VHS player. Halloween. Friday the 13th. Nightmare on Elm Street. Those are but a few names that get thrown around when people speak about the slasher genre. But one series that tends to get forgotten or mixed up in the mess is The Slumber Party Massacre Trilogy. And that’s a sad fact, considering these films are loved by many horror fans and thanks to Shout! Factory, they are newly remastered and available for the world to buy now. But do they still match up to their brethren in the genre?

Next Tuesday Shout! Factory unleashes yet another winning package that we never thought we'd see. That's right, kids. The Slumber Party Massacre collection is heading our way, and we have a look at it for you!
From the Press Release:
Stay up all night with the films that put a new twist on the slasher genre. Along with Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980) and Prom Night (1980), Slumber Party Massacre (1982) helped define the slasher film ethos of the 1980s. Put together by first-time director Amy Holden from a script, titled “Don’t Open the Door," by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle), the film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels.
Here, for the first time, all three Slumber Party Massacres are brought together in one DVD set, due to drill its way into your heart on October 5, 2010 from Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation.

The Slumber Party Massacre films, all three directed by women, will now finally be available on re-release with killer bonus features. You can also get a cool Spm pillow case, too!
Don’t Open the Door was a script written by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (she wrote Rubyfruit Jungle, which appears in Tish's bedroom in the first film) as a response to the recent slasher films that created modern slasher stereotypes like Halloween (1978), and parodied the obvious cliches by setting a slumber party in the path of a deranged lunatic killer wielding a phallic electric drill. Roger Corman, who gave many women horror directors their first shot, allowed first-time director Amy Holden to have a go at it. The film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels that were subsequently more ridiculous. It also spawned the career of actress Brinke Stevens,...
