A lot of people were plenty upset by one Academy Awards nomination snub in particular: that of “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig. One friend on my Facebook page – actor, author and filmmaker Cathryn Michon – put her thoughts succinctly: “Warmest congratulations to the patriarchy of the Oscars. The triumph of an overwhelmingly male director’s branch continues. Greta’s craft, vision and innovation saved your business, you morons.” She continued, “For me, the Oscars have become a ‘Zone of No Interest.’ If Greta isn’t in the running, then the award is meaningless.”
Michon was hardly alone in her ire at Gerwig’s having been passed over. The din built throughout the day on Tuesday until it was deafening, with simple sexism thought to be at the heart of it. Of course, there are also these facts: Gerwig on Tuesday became the first filmmaker in history to have her first three solo features – “Lady Bird,...

Gail Mancuso always thought her feature-film directorial debut would be a comedy, given her background of having directed some of the biggest sitcoms in the history of TV. Instead, she found herself drawn to “A Dog’s Journey” due to the emotional connection she has to animals as well as the messages the film sends to viewers.
“Everything was leaning towards the comedy genre,” Mancuso told TheWrap. “I thought naturally I would do a comedy and I was working on one with Amblin, but then all of a sudden Amblin told me, ‘We have this other one that’s ready to go.’ [‘A Dog’s Purpose’ and ‘A Dog’s Journey’ producer] Gavin Polone knew me from ‘Gilmore Girls’ and we powwowed, and he knew I was an animal lover and had all these dogs, so I read it and, being a woman and loving the Cj story, I knew we could make it into something very special. Lionsgate/Summit’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed a great $5.9M last night, a figure that blows away the R-rated action pic’s previous previews.
The first John Wick Thursday previews earned $950K while John Wick 2 made $2.2M, which repped 20% of its $10.95M Friday. John Wick 3‘s Thursday is even higher than the previews for Sony/MGM’s last James Bond movie Spectre which made $5.25M (which went on to earn a $27.4M Friday), and even 2012’s Skyfall ($4.6M Thursday, $30.5M Friday), though both of those pics were PG-13.
The Keanu Reeves R-rated action threequel from director Chad Stahelski (who helmed John Wick: Chapter 2) is poised to see the series’ highest domestic opening this weekend with $50M at 3,850 theaters, finally unseating Disney’s Avengers: Endgame in its fourth weekend which is expected to do $30M at 4,220. Endgame led all titles on Thursday with $3.4M at 4,662 bringing its three week running total to $741.38M.

There seems to be no downside to Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart’s comedy-drama “The Upside.”
The Stx Films pic is on its way to becoming the entertainment company’s first No. 1 debut with an estimated $19.5 million from 3,080 North American sites, knocking Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman” into the second place slot. Stx Films’ previous biggest debut was 2016’s “Bad Moms,” which landed $23.8 million for the No. 3 spot.
“The Upside” took in $6.95 million on Friday and is looking at a weekend estimate nearly double what the film had initially projected, which may be due to the film’s recutting in order to land a PG-13 rating as opposed to its original R. Stx Films reached a distribution deal with Lantern Entertainment, which formed out of the Weinstein Company’s remaining assets, to handle the pic. It was originally intended to be released last year, but was postponed after the Weinstein scandal.

Those predisposed to emotional manipulation by dogs at play and in peril will be easily swayed by director Charles Martin Smith’s “A Dog’s Way Home.” Based on the bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, this story about a lost dog attempting a 400-mile journey home takes us on an emotional roller coaster, most of it with a lump in our throats. However, for every shameless trick the filmmakers employ to pluck our heartstrings, resonant chords are struck elsewhere, teaching audiences about family, the power of unconditional love, and the ripple effects of compassion. In the pantheon of puppy pictures, this doesn’t rank as top dog, but it’s certainly not the runt of the litter either.

Right off the bat, it’s important to know for this review that I’m a dog owner. In fact, as I wrote this, my six year old mutt is sleeping mere feet from me. I tell you that to let you know that the manipulation found within A Dog’s Way Home worked on me, almost without fail. The movie is a family friendly animal adventure, but one that made me cry on about a half dozen separate occasions. There are happy tears to be found, sad tears, you name it. By the time the flick had come to an end, I was a total mess. The film is an adventure suitable for the whole family, whether they have two legs or four. We follow a puppy (internal monologue provided by Bryce Dallas Howard) as she goes from a young stray to a beloved family pet. Found with a...

The film is co-financed and co-produced by Walden Media and Alibaba Pictures with Quaid reprising his role as the owner of the dog Bailey, voiced again by Josh Gad.

"Use more marshmallows!" Lionsgate has unveiled a new trailer for a mockumentary comedy titled Cook Off!, making fun of cooking competitions. This was actually filmed over a decade ago, and it first premiered at the Us Comedy Arts Festival Aspen back in 2007. Somehow it has been sitting on a shelf all these years, and yet is just now getting an official release thanks to Lionsgate. The huge ensemble cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Wendy McLendon-Covey, Ben Falcone, Niecy Nash, Jennifer Cox, Stephen Root, Diedrich Bader, Louie Anderson, Gary Anthony Williams, Jennifer Elise Cox, Cathryn Michon, Markie Post, and Sam Pancake. This definitely does have a Christopher Guest-esque vibe, with a cast of eccentric goofballs all makin' food under one roof. I'm just curious as to why it took so long to get a release. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Cathryn Michon & Guy Shalem's Cook Off!, direct from YouTube:...

A Dog’s Purpose is 2017’s Collateral Beauty (I know it’s early, but I’ve got no better comparison). Holy shit. Killing multiple canine companions under the guise of reincarnation does not make for an uplifting watch, especially when most rebirth “chapters” stand alone. “But it’s fine! Josh Gad’s voice will fill another fleshy dog sack, and we’ll be looking at more cuddly adorableness against shortly!” Oh, I know! That’s established by a nice puppy euthanasia scene within the first minute-or-so. No! You don’t get to play that card. Everyone involved understood the stakes, and knew that audiences would be reduced to weepy blobs every time another pup bit the dust. This is manipulation at its finest, without the incentive to keep sobbing through the pain.
So, yeah – Josh Gad plays the soul of a dog who cannot die. He talks a lot about his purpose,...

Two doggy deals worth noting: DreamWorks has bought screen rights to W. Bruce Cameron's bestseller A Dog's Purpose, and hired the author to cowrite the script with his wife, Cathryn Michon. Gavin Polone will produce. Cameron's credits include 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Daughter and Michon's include China Beach. The book's about a pooch's quest to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes with multiple owners. Deal was high six-figures, brokered by Apa. Separately, Dog Whisperer guy Cesar Millan is plotting a remake of The Doberman Gang, updating the 70s action-heist film series. Hopefully, each will refrain from killing the dog, a plot development which is a staple of pooch pictures, and one which always stops me from seeing them with the kids. No studio, but Millan is producing with Darren Reagan.

Finerman and Wendy Finerman Prods.' Lisa Zupan brought the project to 26 Films, which optioned the book. Finerman is attached to produce the feature with 26 Films principals Michelle Chydzik Sowa and Nathalie Marciano.
Chydzik Sowa said the plot will revolve around a divorced dad juggling a younger girlfriend and two daughters who both get engaged at the same time. Other details haven't been revealed, but the book's subtitle -- "And Other Reasonable Advice From the Father of the Bride (Not that Anyone Is Paying Attention)" -- provides a clue.
